Time: 2.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m.

Location Palais am Funkturm

Organiser: Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) and German Transport Forum (DVF) Stagnating demand in the railway sector despite a growing total market is typical of the present competitive situation for both passenger transport and freight transport by rail! Considerable cost increases, especially in the field of rail freight, decrease the competitiveness of this mode of transport. This situation has mainly been caused by additional encumbrances such as the electricity tax, the renewable energy surcharge and additional costs due to noise regulations. This leads to operational cost increases and causes unfair competitive conditions for rail transport. How are the prospects of rail freight in view of these challenges? Which instruments can improve its market position? Is it possible to realise new developments that make railway transport, which is already per se environment-friendly, more economic and thus more competitive? Which success factors are critical for the realisation of innovations in the rail freight sector? Moderation

Organiser: German Research Association for Tunnels and Transportation Facilities (STUVA) At the start of 2014, the European Parliament recommended the use of computer-aided methods like Building Information Modelling (BIM) for the procurement of public construction contracts with a draft of a new directive on the award of concession contracts. BIM supplements the design of buildings from geometrical (3D) data with further information such as properties of the object, construction time and costs. The use of BIM is already compulsory for public construction projects in many European countries. In order to promote its use in Germany, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) published a stage plan for BIM introduction at the end of 2015. This mainly applies for infrastructure projects and buildings associated with them but can also be applied to other areas. The BMVI is also supporting four pilot projects. From 2020, BIM should be regularly used for the design of new projects in the scope of responsibility of the BMVI. But what added value does BIM offer for tunnelling? The forum will discuss how this design method can be sensibly applied under the special conditions of underground construction. Welcome & Presentation:

“Introduction to the topic” / „Timber sleepers – reliable, environmentally friendly, essential“ – Rainer Schimmelpfennig, RS Consult, Neumarkt The presentation shows the numerous advantages of the timber sleeper compared with other material, which innovations at this product there were in the last couple of years and why railway network operators in special track sections cannot do without timber sleepers – in short, why the timber sleeper is a contemporary product also in the 21st century. „Yes to Creosote - continued use of creosoted sleepers in Europe – a regulatory update and outlook“ – Ralph Meulepas, Koppers International B.V., Uithoorn (NL) The lecture gives an overview to the current status of the European authorization process for Creosote for its continuing use as a wood preservative for timber sleepers. Furthermore it shows why it is necessary to adhere to this proven preservative at least in next future. „Alternative wood preservatives for timber sleepers – developments and future prospects“ – Dr. Antje Gellerich, Wood Biology and Wood Products, Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen In connection with the authorization process it is expected by authorities that producers and users (treatment companies) look for possible preservative alternatives in an active manner. The lecture gives an overview to the status quo in the field of research on this issue and dares a look to possible future developments.
