I am submitting for the information of the Senate Committee on Educational Policy the attached Proposal to Revise the Admission Requirements for the Minor in Managerial Skills. Title:

Revision of the admissions requirements for the Minor in Managerial Skills

Sponsor:

College of Business Administration

Executive Summary:

The College of Business Administration proposes to remove Managerial Skills from the list of available minors offered to non-CBA students. Since the College of Business introduced the Business Administration minor in 2014, students have been enrolling in increasing numbers. At the same time the interest in the Managerial Skills minor from non-Business students has declined. The college concludes that the Business Administration minor is a better fit for non-Business students seeking some business education in an array of business disciplines.

Description:

The College of Business Administration offers seven minors: Business Administration, Business Analytics, Business Operations, Finance, International Business, Management Information Systems, and Managerial Skills. Six of the seven minors are currently open to students from other colleges. International Business – given its upper level course requirements – is only open to undergraduates in CBA. The college proposes to remove the Managerial Skills from the list of minors available to non-business students.

Justification

In 2014, the College of Business Administration created the Business Administration minor in to response to the demands of students seeking a cursory knowledge of Business to compliment any non-Business degree. The Business Administration Minor is comprised of 18-19 credit hours, and provides students an introduction to the following major areas of business administration: accounting, finance, information and decision sciences, and managerial studies. While the college has experienced a sizeable increase in enrollment in the Business Administration minor, the Managerial Skills Minor has become less appealing and appropriate for non-CBA students. By removing this minor as an option for non-CBA students, students will enroll in a minor which will be more beneficial and complimentary to their degrees by giving them a survey of all business disciplines versus only Management courses. In addition, non-CBA students who have pursued the Managerial Skills minor in the past have been required to take at least two pre-requisite courses adding time to complete their degree. The Business Administration minor requires no prerequisite courses. The college will continue to offer the Managerial Skills minor to Business students seeking skills in specific management areas such as Human Resources, Negotiation and Project Management, Most Business students will have the required background for the Managerial Skills minor (which is comprised of primarily 400-level courses) and can be completed with no time added to degree based on the structure of the Business curriculum.

Catalog Statement

See attached

Minority Impact Statement:

The removal of Managerial Skills from the available minors for non-CBA students will not have a negative impact on minority students given a more appropriate option of the Business Administration Minor.

Budgetary and Staff Implications:

The removal of Managerial Skills from the available minors for non-CBA students will streamline the advising and petition process for students applying for the BA minor by removing any confusion about which option is more appropriate for non-CBA students. The streamlined process will also allow the CBA to accurately predict and staff courses needed for those enrolled in the BA minor.

Library Resource Implications:

There are no additional resources that are anticipated being drawn from the library as a result of this proposal.

Space Implications:

There will be no new space requirements.
