We’re delighted to announce the results of a fantastic year’s media campaign – all designed to drive customers through your door.

People know they can trust our tools from experience, but to help understand why, take a look at the Rockwell Scale below. There is a different ideal hardness level for each tool, dependent on the task it has to perform. This hardness is expressed as a Rockwell Value – Burgon & Ball tools are all developed to offer optimal hardness and it’s one of the main things that really sets us apart from many of our competitors.

Simply put, all our tools perform different jobs and we harden and temper each piece of steel differently – to create the right properties for each one. For instance, the sharp, lasting cutting edge you find on our hand shears is only possible with a very hard metal. Whilst the hardness on our spades is tempered to offer greater shock absorption, so they can withstand jabbing into stones! Getting this balance right makes all the difference to the functionality of the tools.

Built to promote our Home Allotment range of planters, we were delighted when our ‘5-A-Day Garden’ was awarded a coveted Gold Medal at the 2011 RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The ensuing media frenzy that followed the garden’s opening by celebrity gardener James Wong, resulted in fantastic exposure of our Willow Planters. The debate has long raged about two handled cans versus single handled When it comes to full sized (heavy when full of water) cans for the garden we firmly believe in the practicality of the latter. A single handled can requires no twisting of the back to grip the handles with both hands and the graceful handle slips through the hand, as gravity tips the can forward into the pouring position. Not surprisingly, coming from a family of designers, I have been sketching out ideas for products for as long as I can remember. As a gardener I have always dreamed of creating a range of garden tools and accessories. I believe that tools should be functional and beautiful, and make each job a pleasure.

One of the problems I face as a woman when gardening is that my hands are generally too small for standard tools. My designs specifically address this issue and I hope will add to the joy of gardening. I’m immensely proud of these tools, which are a joy to work with. I hope you love them too. I believe the better the tools, the easier the job.

All the tools in my collection feature mirror polished stainless steel bodies – keeping rust at bay and requiring only a quick wipe down after use to keep them in perfect condition.

The ferrules, featuring the hallmark, are solid brass – ensuring a secure connection between head and handle. I have chosen natural waxed FSC beech wood for the handle. It not only looks beautiful, it feels wonderful and over time will slowly mould itself to the shape of your hand. Smaller handle - ideal for ladies hands.

One thing about me is that I have been known to abandon my tools in the garden as I rush off to do something else, leaving them at the mercy of the elements. My secateurs are made from a special stainless steel, making them outstanding for cutting as well as being rust-free. They are smaller than the usual secateurs so fit perfectly in my hand, pocket and even my handbag. A simple brass lock keeps the blades safely closed when not in use. 20cm long GSC/SECAT

I couldn’t help noticing that whenever I would dig, half the soil fell off the back of the trowel, making each job take longer. The gently curving backstops of my trowel prevent this from happening – one less frustration in my day. 26.5cm long x 8cm wide GSC/TROW

I think a good fork should slip into the soil with minimum effort. That is why the ends of the tines on my fork are shaped and sharpened, making tasks like turning soil and weeding a pleasure! 26.5cm long x 7.5cm wide GSC/FORK

My unique three-pronged weeder is especially good at tackling those devilish weeds that re-grow if you leave in any of the roots. An invaluable tool for planting seeds, bulbs and seedlings, even in grass or harder soils. Simply push the point into the soil to make a hole, (wiggle around for a bigger hole), drop your subject in, and cover with soil. I always wear gloves when I’m working in the garden or the potting shed – it saves me hours with the nailbrush afterwards!

Wildlife is not only beautiful, but vital to every garden and with a little encouragement we can tempt the visitors that offer us gardeners a special helping hand and are a delight to behold: birds to polish off the odd snail, ladybirds to do their best with the aphids and the solitary bee – non-aggressive wonder pollinator. My gorgeous ‘hanging havens’ will help bring gardens alive.

Between them, these 2 pairs of gloves give my hands the protection they need for every job in the garden – as well as adding a little panache to the usual gardener’s attire!

I keep this pair of gloves by my back door and slip them on every time I pop out for a spot of gardening. They fit like a…glove (should!) and are deliciously comfortable and elegant too. • The palm and fingers of my gloves are made from tough, hard wearing but ultra soft fabric that doesn’t go stiff if it gets wet. • 2 way stretch mesh inserts between the fingers regulate hand temperature and improve dexterity. • Protective, soft lined, rib weave outer fabric gives great flexibility of movement. • And finally the lovely wrist strap makes them adjustable for every hand and gives the snug fit necessary to stop bits dropping down inside them! Encourage lots of birds to visit your garden hopefully they will scoop up a few tasty slugs on their travels! Fill the removable tray with bird seed or nuts and then just hang it up so the opening faces away from the prevailing wind – to keep the food dry. These gloves are amazing to wear when I’m pruning & cutting soft, supple and beautiful. The extra long cuffs keep my arms free from scratches and allergies and the palm re-enforcements keep the blisters at bay. A perfect home for some of the little creatures. Without insects our gardens would not bloom, our plants would not fruit and the birds would be very hungry.
