Introduction to the Currie Football Netball Club Welcome to the Currie Football Netball Club for all players and families for the 2013 season. The Currie Football Netball Club Inc is one of Australia's most isolated clubs, boasting a rich history dating back to the early 1900's. It has survived two world wars, ever changing social environs and every other challenge that the world of grass roots Aussie Rules football can throw its way. In 2010, the Currie Football Club turned 100 years of age! It is our aim to build on this proud history and tradition by providing a stable foundation to foster and to encourage football and netball participation and development on King Island. Our Club mission is to manage the club in a professional manner and adhere to current best practices and relevant codes of conduct while striving for innovation and improvement to meet the needs of the community, members, players and sponsors. In striving for this mission in 2011 the Club adopted the AFL Quality Club guidelines and policies. One of our core values as a Club is to promote and maintain a family friendly culture within the Club. Our 1-3 year plan can be found on our website www.Curriefootballclub.com.au along with more detail on the Club’s vision, mission and values. On-going recruiting of new players is critical to the success and survival of this Club and it is every member’s duty to make an effort in this and by continuing to support the committee and players.

Equipment & Jumpers Equipment such as netballs, footballs & jumpers make up a large part of the costs of the club. We have thousands of dollars invested and we ask that you respect the club’s assets as if they were your own. Equipment for both football & netball must be returned at the completion of matches and training.

Club Apparel We ask that you support the club & partners by wearing one of our many garments we have for purchasing. Please see Adrian Stingel or Shelley Graham if you are interested in seeing our range.

Trainers, Medical and Insurance CFNC have qualified trainers in attendance for all matches. All injuries must be reported as they occur. Although the Club is insured by JLT Insurance under the AFL, it is only limited insurance and as such we highly recommend that you have insurance through a private health fund. The CFNC will not be liable for any medical costs incurred by individuals as a result of injury which is sustained to a player while competing or training with the CFNC.

Canteen The canteen provides a substantial amount of funding for our club which assists in the purchasing of new jumpers, equipment, and functions. Without it we would not survive as a club. All parents and partners will be expected to assist throughout the season. You should be aware of your obligations and if you can’t assist for one reason or another, you must organise someone else to take your spot. Meredith Graham is our canteen manager for 2013.

Club Song We are good, we are good, we are very bloody good, we are the mighty Currie team. It takes a good team to stop us, a better one to whop us, and Grassy knows it's true. If North ever heads us we'll keep fighting back, cause we're fighting for our colours, the good ole red and black. We are good, we are good we are very bloody good, we are the mighty Currie team.

THE CURRIE FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB CODE OF CONDUCT MANDATORY AND ENFORCEABLE CODES OF CONDUCT FOR COACHES, PLAYERS, PARENTS, SUPPORTERS AND OFFICIALS The Club Code of Conduct applies to all of our officials, volunteers, members and supporters. Coaches’ Code of Conduct Coaches are required to sign the AFL Code of Conduct as part of the Level 1 Accreditation requirement. All coaches must be accredited to coach in our league. Players’ Code of Conduct  Play by the rules – the rules of your club and the laws of the game  Never argue with an umpire or other official – without these people you can’t play football  Control your temper - verbal abuse of officials and sledging other players doesn’t help you enjoy or win any games  Be a team player – it’s a team game, treat it that way  Treat all players as you would like to be treated – fairly  Co-operate with your coach, the umpires and team-mates  Play for your own enjoyment and to improve your skills  Don’t use ugly remarks based on race, religion, gender or ability – you’ll let down your coach, team-mates and family if you do – and many such comments are actually now illegal Parents, Supporters and Officials’ Code of Conduct  Remember that you are there for the participants to enjoy the game  Encourage participation, but don’t force it  Teach that enjoyment is more important than winning  Never ridicule mistakes or losses – supporters are there to support, not downgrade  Lead by example and respect all players, coaches, umpires and spectators – physical or verbal abuse will not be tolerated  Recognise all volunteers who are giving up their valuable time  Never publicly criticise umpires – raise personal concerns with club officials in private  Don’t use ugly remarks based on race, religion, gender or ability – you’ll let down your family and yourself if you do – and many such comments are actually now illegal 9|Page

By registering with the Currie Football Netball Club we agree to abide by these principles. We support the Club in its undertakings and encourage the Club to take any necessary disciplinary actions including the suspension and banning where warranted of any players, parents and or spectators for repeated or serious breaches of these Codes of Conduct.

Concussion Recognition & Management Guidelines for PLAYERS Concussion is a mild brain injury, caused by trauma that results in temporary dysfunction of the brain. When it occurs a player may experience symptoms and temporary loss of brain skills such as memory and thinking abilities. It is important for players to be aware of possible signs of concussion which are often subtle. The trauma causing concussion can sometimes be obvious, but at other times may be very subtle and hardly noticed. Ask teammates, coaches or others who were present whether they observed you unconscious, dazed or confused at the time of the incident if you have some symptoms or signs. If a player with concussion returns to sport whilst still symptomatic, there is an increased risk of further injury. Therefore, no player who has concussion, or is suspected of having concussion, should return to their sporting activity (training or playing) until cleared by a doctor. Some of the possible symptoms of concussion: - Headache - Dizziness - Fatigue - Memory disturbance - Nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain - Altered or lost vision - Ringing in the ears Some of the signs you may observe: - Loss of balance - Pale complexion - Slow or altered verbal skills - Mental confusion and memory loss - Irritability - Poor concentration - Inappropriate behaviour You might think that you are just not feeling your usual self! Think of concussion. If you observe any of these symptoms or signs see a doctor as soon as possible. If you observe deterioration in these symptoms or signs go immediately to an accident and emergency department at your nearest hospital. Progression and Management As a temporary brain dysfunction, concussion will resolve with time. This may vary from an hour or so to several days. Occasionally the brain will recover even more slowly. The best treatment is rest from physical activity and work/study. The player should be seen by a doctor who will monitor the symptoms, signs and brain functioning. The doctor must clear the player to return to sporting activity and this will usually involve a stepped approach with a gradual increase in activities over a few days. The doctor may arrange a specialist opinion (if the concussion is slow to resolve) or cognitive testing (brain functioning).

If at any stage the symptoms or signs are getting worse seek urgent medical attention. Key Messages 1. Concussion is a temporary dysfunction of the brain following trauma 2. Suspect concussion if you are irritable, sick, excessively fatigued, have a headache, or just not feeling your usual self 3. Seek medical attention – urgently if the symptoms or signs are getting worse 4. Rest is the best treatment followed by a gradual return to physical activity and work/study
