CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT WEEK 2016 Dear Parents/Carers, I am excited to be able to share with you the wonderful range of activities available for our young people during Curriculum Enrichment Week, which will run from Monday 11th to Friday 15th July 2016. We have worked hard to provide a variety of opportunities that involve learning new skills and taking part in new experiences; ranging from free in-school activities to those that are more costly. Please read the information very carefully with your child and make first and second choices from the activities listed. Please note that while we have tried to be as accurate as possible, all costs are approximate at this time. This week is an important part of the school academic calendar and is not optional. It is a great chance for students to develop key skills and to explore our core values. It enables excellent learning opportunities and can shape students’ future career aspirations and GCSE option choices. There are over seven hundred students in Years 7 to 9 so the task of arranging the activities will not be easy. It is therefore important that you select a second choice in case your first choice is overbooked. Regrettably, in some instances, students will not get either of their choices. If this happens the administrative team, who will be organising the various groups, will contact the students concerned and discuss with them what activities are still available. The deadline for returning the booking form to school is Friday 6th November. To help you navigate through the wide range of activities available this year, I have organised the activities according to price. Please see the end of this booklet for information regarding payments and support available, as well as the booking form. Please do also pay close attention to the information at the front of the booklet regarding special arrangements for the week. This has been a fantastic week of experiences in past years and I am confident that CEW 2016 will be the best yet! Kind regards

Mr R Reynolds Lead Practitioner in PE and Community Education

HEALTH AND SAFETY Now, more than ever before, we are extremely aware of the potential hazards involved with adventure activities. It can sometimes be difficult, almost impossible, to create an opportunity for adventure whilst totally eliminating all risks. We sometimes hear of schools withdrawing from all types of adventure activity because of the risk of some unforeseen danger or threat to the well-being of their children. In the process of organising the wide range of activities listed in this booklet, the staff involved have paid great attention to health and safety and some activities have been modified as a consequence. Where activities take place in a potentially hazardous environment, tuition and supervision by properly qualified instructors has been arranged. In situations where teachers at the school possess appropriate qualifications, their expertise is being fully employed to provide children with real adventure at reduced costs. Every activity included in our Curriculum Enrichment Week has been risk-assessed for health and safety and adequate staff/student ratios. As a result we can confidently offer a wide range of activities which are within Cornwall Outdoor Education Authority's strict safety guidelines.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE WEEK Travel to and from School The school buses will operate at the normal times. Some of the activities have starting and finishing times beyond the normal school day. If you choose such an activity you will have to make your own arrangements for getting to and from school. Students using bikes must have a school permit to do so. Skateboards should NOT be brought into school at any time during this week. Meal Times Many daily activities require a packed lunch. If your child normally has a free school meal then a packed lunch can be picked up from the canteen each morning before they go on their trip but it is the student’s responsibility to organise and do this. The canteen will be open from 8.15 am to 9.00 am and then again at break time and lunch time (until 2.00 pm) during this week and will provide light snacks, buns, sandwiches, drinks etc. School Dress During Curriculum Enrichment Week it is usual for students to wear casual, practical clothes. Outlandish styles and jewellery will not be allowed. Student Behaviour Naturally we expect students to behave as well as they normally do during this week. In the past we have been complimented by the staff at our venues and by coach companies for the excellent standard of our students. Just in case, though, it is necessary to point out that unacceptable behaviour will result in students being withdrawn from activities. In such cases a refund will not be possible, as most bookings have to be paid in advance.

PAYING FOR YOUR ACTIVITY – SCHOOL CHARGING POLICY The Education Act 1996 allows the school to make a charge for these visits as it is outside the conditions put in place by this Act.  It is not an activity required to fulfil any Public Examination requirement.  It is not an activity required to fulfil the National Curriculum.  It is not an activity required to fulfil Religious Education. As the school does not have funds to cover the cost of travel/admission charges, we must ask parents/carers to make a payment to cover the costs involved. Once your child has been given a place on an activity the activity organiser will be writing to you with a request for a non-refundable deposit, the amount of which will be dependent upon the actual cost of the trip. A minimum amount of £100 to be paid on more expensive trips. Further staged payments to cover the cost of the more expensive trips will then be organised so that the costs are spread out as much as possible. Please Note: All payments must be paid using our Parent Pay system. No cash payments can be accepted. If you do not have internet access, please contact the school Finance Office. In the event of a withdrawal from a trip all expenses already incurred by the school will be deducted from any payment before a reimbursement is made. We are a fully inclusive school and want all our students to have as many positive experiences and outcomes as possible during this week. If any financial problems do exist or if your circumstances change please contact the schools finance team who will be glad to help and support you. Telephone 01752 843715 and ask for the Finance Office.

BOOKING YOUR ACTIVITY When you have read the information on the school website and made your selection, please carefully fill in the booking form with your first and second choices at saltash.net/enrichment or collect a paper copy from Reception and return it to Reception. The deadline for all entries is Friday 6th November. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ONLY SUBMIT ONE APPLICATION WITH YOUR CHOICES LISTED. If you want to change your selection at any time, please do not submit another application. You must phone the school and speak to Miss Lawrance to see if it is possible. Telephone 01752 843715 and ask for the Finance Office. Activities will not be arranged on a ‘first come first served’ basis. All of the forms will be processed after the deadline. Please note:

The school reserves the right to veto applications for Residential Visits for students where behaviour has not been of an acceptable standard.
