Protective Earth Ground The LMH6 module must be properly earth grounded. A secure electrical connection at the AC input location will facilitate the necessary grounding.

Electrostatic Discharge No special electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions are required for handling LMH6 modules in a production environment.

Component Wiring and Strain Relief The LMH6 provides internal strain relief; however, neither of the components should be suspended by the leads. EMC management and safety regulation requires the length of wire between the electronics housing and the light engine to be only the length currently supplied by Cree. Individual LED and overall module control is achieved by a dedicated light engine and driver combination. The components must not be separated; separation of the light engine and the driver voids all warranties.

Dimming The electronics are available with Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) and 1–10 V dimming options. See the LMH6 data sheet for available module numbers.

LMH6 LED Module Design Guide

Mechanical Design The LMH6 module is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing down-lighting luminaires and incorporate into new luminaire designs. The integral lens retention ring has three (3) mounting clips that allow an upper reflector or cone flange to snap and lock into place. The LMH6 heat sink is designed with three (3) inset areas that ideally facilitate the use of a top-mounted bracket that incorporates three (3) legs, which allows mounting into a ceiling. (See the Design Examples section.) Note that any bracket or other mounting that attaches to the top surface of the heat sink should not be in contact with the fins of the heat sink. A minimum gap of three (3) mm between the heat sink fins and any other surface is required.

Mounting Options The LMH6 module has been engineered for universal mounting provided the thermal-design guidelines are followed and the case temperature (Tc) point remains below the specified maximum. (See the Thermal Design section for details). There are two (2) options for properly securing the LMH6 module to the luminaire. 3-D CAD models of the options are available for download1. For technical assistance in determining which option is best for a particular design, please contact the Cree Modules team directly at [email protected].

Option 1 Three (3) threaded M3x10 and six (6) slots for M3 tri-round screws are accessible in the top of the heat sink. These locations allow for a multitude of surface-mounting options. A = M3x10 B = M3 USE ONLY THREAD-FORMING OR THREAD-ROLLING SCREWS

Option 2 Three (3) M5 clearance holes are located in the outside vertical surface of the lens/reflector retention ring. Mounting fasteners must not protrude more than 15 mm into the module. Holes are 120° apart.

Thermal Design The LMH6 module must not exceed 70 °C at the Tc point in thermal equilibrium to ensure proper performance and expected lifetime and to maintain warranty terms. The LMH6 module is designed to perform in a variety of thermal environments. The LMH6 efficiently transfers heat away from the LEDs to the heat sink and to the surrounding air. When designing a luminaire that incorporates the LMH6 module, careful consideration must be taken to ensure a sufficient thermal path to ambient is provided. Verification of a proper thermal path is done through the placement of a thermocouple at the specified location. NOTE: The LMH6 DALI option is designed with onboard thermal management. Once the electronics detect an overheating condition, they reduce the power output. Full output and lighting can be re-established only by cycling the input power. Luminaire designs with direct thermal paths to ambient are desired and will provide the best results.

Ambient Temperature Measurement The ambient temperature of the test environment must be monitored and recorded with the required data during a temperature test. The preferred ambient temperature measurement apparatus is described in UL1598-2008 Rev January 11, 2010; 19.5. The intent of this requirement is to assure that the monitored temperature does not fluctuate. The ambient temperature of the space must be 25 °C ± 5 °C. Note that bare thermocouple wires in open air are not an acceptable method of recording the ambient temperature.

Thermocouple Attachment Method Attach a thermocouple to the indicated Tc location. The attachment method described in UL1598-2008 Rev January 11, 2010; 19.7.4 is preferred; using silver-filled thermal epoxy is an acceptable alternative. module at the Tc location and that the attachment method does not add thermal resistance to the test is critical to correct and acceptable testing. NOTE: Quick-drying adhesives and other cyanoacrylate products or their derivatives are known to be destructive, over time, to the components and adhesives used in solid-state lighting products. The use of cyanoacrylate products is at the discretion of the testing organization. Cyanoacrylate adhesives should not be used for any long-term testing.

Tc Measurement Method

Tc Location

Once the thermocouple is properly attached at the Tc location, assemble the module into the luminaire. The luminaire must then be tested in its intended environment or that environment which will result in the highest recorded temperature. Take care during assembly to ensure that the thermocouple remains properly attached. Energize the luminaire and allow the assembly to reach thermal equilibrium. Thermal stabilization may require up to 7.5 hours, depending upon the mechanical design. Once thermal equilibrium is achieved, record the room ambient temperature and the Tc. Acceptable test results require the ambient temperature to be between 20 °C and 30 °C (25 °C ± 5 °C). Recorded variations above or below 25  °C must be added to or subtracted from the recorded temperatures.

Environmental Design The LMH6 module is suitable for damp locations and is rated IP-20. If the LMH6 module is to be used in an outdoor luminaire classified other than “suitable for damp location; covered ceilings,” the luminaire manufacturer must ensure proper intrusion protection and appropriate regulatory-compliance testing.

Optical Design The LMH6 module comes with a diffuser and lens to provide a uniform light source. The lens, diffuser and reflector cone must not be altered or removed from the LMH6 module. Secondary optics are not required. If secondary optics are used, understand that the following trade-offs occur: •

Reduced light output (luminous flux)

Reduced efficacy (lumens/watt)

Possible changes in color characteristics (correlated color temperature (CCT), CRI)

Photometry IES (LM-63-2002) and photometric report files for the LMH6 module are available on the LMH6 product page by selecting the Documentation tab on the LMH6 product page.

Design Examples The following section contains design proposals for luminaires that incorporate the LMH6 module. Please note the various attachment methods employed. Note: The examples depicted below are conceptual only. The inclusion of a concept in this group does not imply agency approval. The exclusion of any concept in this group should not be seen as a limitation. These examples are not proprietary or protected and may be reproduced wholly or in part as required by a given luminaire manufacturer. Safety and Regulatory Note Do not look directly into an LMH6 light source in operation with the lens removed! Eye injury can result. For more information about LEDs and eye safety, please refer to the LED Eye Safety application note. Standard Electromagnetic Compatibility Safety Photobiological Safety Environmental

Safety Certification The LMH6 module is a UL-listed “Recognized” component and is “suitable for damp locations; covered ceilings.” The final luminaire design should go through safety certification as required, which is the responsibility of the luminaire manufacturer.

ENERGY STAR® ENERGY STAR is a U.S. government-backed program that defines energy-efficiency standards for products. Qualification of the final luminaire design for ENERGY STAR certification is the responsibility of the luminaire manufacturer. The final luminaire must be submitted for testing to an independent, certified test facility. Cree can and will assist in the process by providing LM-80 component data for submission to ENERGY STAR. * If a luminaire incorporating the LMH6 2000-lm or 2900-lm light source will be submitted to ENERGY STAR, a Tc maximum of 60 °C is required.

Module Disposal LMH6 modules must be disposed of properly at the end of their useful lifetime in accordance with local regulations. The LMH6 module is classified as “Electronic Equipment.”
