A goal is something to reach, strive, or work for.

Goals provide a target of focus for our work.

“If you don’t know where your are going. How can you expect to get there?” Basil S. Walsh

Goals should be S.M.A.R.T. Specific, measureable, action based, relevant, and timely

pecific easurable ction ealistic imely

Good goals are clear, precise, and definite. If your goals are too broad, too general, or too fuzzy, they will be hard to achieve. The goal must be written so that you can measure your progress toward it, so you’ll know when you’ve achieved it. Be prepared to take action to meet your goals.

Make sure that your goal is not too difficult or too easy. Think about the steps you will have to take to achieve the goal. The goal should have a definite timeline.

Examples and Non Examples Cut out and sort the goals into two groups: examples of S.M.A.R.T. goals and non examples of S.M.A.R.T. goals. Glue each goal down in the correct column.

Example

Non Example

Cut out each of the goals and glue underneath either example or non example of a S.M.A.R.T. goal.

Creating an Action Plan

My Action Plan

Week of _____________________________

Goal

What is my goal?

How will I know if I’m on track to meet my goal?

Plan

What should be my first step in working toward my goal?

What is something I will do differently?

Act

What happened? Did I achieve my goal?

Did I follow my plan?

Reflect

What was the result of my actions?

What could I do differently next time?

Recipe for Success For a fun display that emphasizes the concept of writing goals, I like to have my students make a “Recipe for Success” bulletin board. This is a very quick and easy board to set up that allows students to display their goals as if they were writing a recipe. • Cover bulletin board (or any large flat surface such as a door) with pastel colored paper or material. • Print and laminate the “recipe for success” title (see separate file). • Print and cut out student recipe cards (2 versions). • Have students decide on a goal to write a recipe for that will be displayed in the classroom. • Have students brainstorm a few ingredients needed to achieve that goal. • Then, have students list a few steps of things they will do to accomplish their goal. • After students have identified their ingredients and steps, allow them to write down their responses on a recipe card. (I like to have my students write it down on scrap paper first). • Display the recipe cards on the bulletin board for a cute display!
