Chateau Les Crayères Reims, France Domaine Les Crayères – a Relais & Châteaux association member and the Gardinier family’s property – has repeatedly elicited praise from world-class newspapers and magazines. The 20 rooms and en-suites are tastefully decorated and radiate France’s hallmark brand of classical style. This house, which was once the de Polignac family’s home, has been likened to a treasure chest, and has been a tribute to comfort and class, since 1904. Interior architect Pierre-Yves Rochon has entirely restored it, reviving and modernising its distinctive ‘Château’ class from every perspective, and steeped it in sophisticated, subtly tantalising, panache.

Driving in France Here are a few points to remember when driving in France: •

Remember to drive on the right

Seatbelts must be worn (front and rear) at all times

The minimum age for driving is 18

Always ensure you have your driving licence and a copy of your motor insurance with

French Road Signs

Coming to a junction, the main road on which you are travelling bears left ahead.

This used to be a common sign in France until 2011 – it warned of fixed speed camera ahead. These are now being removed, only sometimes replaced with a flashing warning advising you of your speed if you are driving over the limit.

Autoroute (Toll motorway) speed limits. Normally 130km/h (about 80mph) in dry weather, 110km/h

Having a radar detector in France is illegal and from 2012 GPS SatNav warnings are also illegal.

(about 70mph) in wet weather, in which case dipped lights should also be turned on.

Please be advised that recently the French police are being extremely strict with foreign cars and reserve the right not only to issue heavy on the spot fines, but to confiscate vehicles. Since no photographic evidence is necessary to qualify this, caution is extremely advisable.

Usually seen at the entrance to a tunnel – turn your lights on.

Apart from the usual ‘Give Way’ and ‘Stop’ signs and road markings, the following special signs are used specifically in relation to ‘Priorité-à-droite’ in France.

Stop really does mean stop. These are commonly used as a “traffic calming” measure and may appear in unexpected places.

Usually seen at the exit from a tunnel – a reminder that you can turn your lights off if you wish.

time the car arrived. A ‘disque de stationnement’ can be bought for a couple of euros in many shops, bar/tabac and most supermarkets with a motorist section.

‘Priorité à Droite’ is a VERY important driving rule in France.

These blue signs are found inside the zones indicated above. They mark the actual parking bays or car parks.

If you’re on a main road you do not necessarily have right of way – there are many ‘Priorité à Droite’ junctions where you have to give way to traffic coming from the right, whether in a town, village or on country roads. THE RULE: If there is no road sign or road marking to indicate otherwise, traffic coming from the right always has priority unless it is joining from a car park or a private road.
