The thousands who gather on the Parkway are running and walking to raise money for cancer research and care at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. STEP

ONE

Set Your Goals

As the team captain, you will set an overall fundraising goal for your team as a marker to measure your success. Think about how many runners and walkers your team will have and a target fundraising goal for each member. On average, participants raise $25 to $50 each, but many raise hundreds or even thousands more.

How to create your team goal Number of employees

____________

x 20-50% participation

____________

x $50 average for each walker

____________

Your fundraising goal TOTAL = $__________

“Our employees and their families look forward to the Parkway Run every year. TEAMPHLY spends September fundraising for the Cancer Center and has fun all the way up through race day. Making a difference in our community is a significant part of our culture, and CHOP has been a valued partner in that mission.” — Bill Procopio, Executive Director, Philadelphia Insurance Companies Foundation

STEP

TWO

Create Your Team and Fundraising Page

Setting up a team at parkwayrun.org is easy: 1. Click “Register” at the top of your screen. 2. Select your participation type. 3. When prompted, select “Create a Team” and enter your team name. Follow the prompts and enter your personal fundraising goal as well as your team fundraising goal. (You can change these later.) 4. Enter your contact details and pay for your registration. If you would like to register additional team members, you will have that option after finalizing your registration. 5. Congratulations – your team is set up! Now all your team members can register online at parkwayrun.org and join your team. 6. Your team will have its own team fundraising page and, as team captain, you can personalize it with photos, videos, messages and more. 7. As members of your team register, they will get their own personal fundraising pages, all linked to the team page. They, too, can personalize their pages, and their friends and family can make gifts (via credit card) directly on either fundraising page. And as any member of your team raises money for cancer research at CHOP, the total will rise on your team’s site.

STEP

THREE

Recruit Corporate Champions

A team captain helps to oversee the process of setting up a corporate team, but many teams find that having internal corporate champions can help to successfully organize your team. These champions will recruit their colleagues and guide them to fundraising success. • Aim to recruit one champion for every 10 walkers/runners. • Consider asking your company’s leadership to recruit one or more champions from among their employees. Depending on your company, it may make sense to recruit by department, floor, branch office or another type of division. • Hold a meeting for all your corporate champions in advance of a company-wide kickoff so you can answer questions and get organized. • Ensure that all corporate champions register on parkwayrun.org and set up their own fundraising pages so that they can answer questions for their teammates.

STEP

FOUR

Recruit Runners/ Walkers

Get Started • Send a company-wide email/voicemail to employees — perhaps from your company’s leadership — promoting the Parkway Run & Walk. Consider scheduling one or more follow-up reminders. • Announce a fun internal kick-off event for all participants. • Emphasize your fundraising goals for the team and for each individual runner/walker. • Ensure that all your team members register at parkwayrun.org. Each person will need to pay their own registration fee.

Offer Incentives • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

A special parking spot Extra vacation days Lunch with the boss Tickets to movies/games/theater Snooze day (allowed to come in late) Round of golf with the boss Car washed by boss or co-worker Leave one hour early/come in one hour late Office redecorated or cleaned A day in a bigger office Gift certificates for restaurants, gas, car wash Company promotional items Company-wide jeans on Fridays if a certain target is reached Pizza party at the office

To Whom? • First person to register • Top fundraiser for the team overall • Top 10 fundraisers • Top fundraiser of each week • First person to bring in X new donations • People who recruit the most new teammates • Every employee who makes a donation to the team It can be a good idea to space out your incentives through the fundraising period to keep the momentum going.

STEP

FIVE

Fundraise!

As team captain, you can work with your corporate champions to share fundraising tips with your whole team. Each member of your team needs to build a network of people from whom they can fundraise. The larger their lists are from the start, the more money your team will raise! Assemble a master list of people to approach, including their email addresses. If you plan to send solicitations by mail, collect their mailing addresses as well. If you plan to solicit from your company’s vendors, you may want to designate a point person who will do that. Vendors may also be able to offer incentive prizes for your company’s top fundraisers. Think $100 is too much for one person? Here are five simple steps you can share with your team:

How to Raise $100 in Five Days DAY

Online Fundraising Tools The Dashboard Each member of your team can log into parkwayrun.org and view his or her dashboard. Each of you can click “Account Login” in the upper right, and enter your email address and password. On the dashboard, you will see information about you and your participation in the event: • Number of donations you’ve received • Your rank among your team members in terms of total dollars raised • Your rank overall among all Parkway Run & Walk participants • Your largest gift • Your average gift Click on the “Your Team Fundraising” tab and you will see the same information about your team — number of team members, how many donations received and how you rank in the event total. This information will be available to every member of your team. Team captains have the extra responsibility of managing the team’s site. From the dashboard, the team captain can modify the team page.

Fundraising Pages In the lower right of your dashboard, under the “Your Fundraising” heading, click on “Your Fundraising Page” to view or edit your public page. There you can add all kinds of information about you and why you’re invested in this cause: • Upload your profile photo. • Create a custom URL that you can give out to family and friends. • Add your personal message/story. (CHOP starts you with a default message, but you can change it.) • Embed a video to your page. • Add an additional image to your page. • Connect your social media profile. • Subscribe to text alerts and CHOP emails. • Make your fundraising page searchable or private, and choose whether donor names and gift amounts can be viewed by anyone who comes to your page. • Send solicitation emails to your friends and family. Each participant in the Parkway Run & Walk has a personal fundraising page, and his or her team has one as well. Only the team captain can edit the team page. Need more help? Please email [email protected].
