UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS •

Sustainable development goal nr 11: “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” Copenhagen supports and endorses the UN Sustainable Development Goals and we are ready to share our solutions for our common future and mutual benefit.

- OUR COMMON FUTURE • • •

Tackling climate change without involving cities is impossible. Cities are currently responsible for 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and by 2050, 70 percent of the world’s population will live in cities. According to a report by the Global Commission on Economy and Climate cities have the potential to deliver 3.7 Gigaton of CO2 emissions reductions per year by 2030. That is a sizeable portion of the 80 percent global reductions needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change by 2050. Since 2007 Copenhagen has worked together with cities all over the world on achieving those goals, and now it finally seems to be happening. The French presidency for the COP21 has shown great interest in including cities and locals governments in the agreement in Paris in December.

NATIONS TALK - CITIES ACT •

The reason is that the citizens of Copenhagen and other big cities all over the world are already feeling the negative effects of climate change. Here in Copenhagen it is cloudbursts, extreme rain and flooding due to rising sea levels. We are acting. Copenhagen wants to become the first carbon neutral capital in the world by in 2025 and we are investing billions in climate change adaptation. It is possible because we see growth and green transformation as two sides of the same coin. That is what governments around the world need to understand; change their mindsets so they can see, that for every EURO we invest in green transformation and making greener, more inclusive, smarter and more resilient cities together with our citizens it comes back to us many fold. Not only in cool cash, but in quality of life for our citizens. That is what matters!”

CLIMATE ADAPTION PLAN Clould Bursts • Cloud Burst Management pays off: Public and private investments of approx. DDK 11 bn. Avoid damages of DDK 16 bn over 100 years. Surplus of DDK 5bn over 100 years from adopting the combined solution for the management of heavy rains in Copenhagen. A traditional sewer-based solution would give a deficit of DDK 4 bn over 100 years since investment would be more than DDK 20 bn. • Livability and climate adaptation on rain is connected. Adaptation gives a potential for urban space improvements with high recreational value if this done in coordination with the cloud burst projects.

GREEN GROWTH • In the City of Copenhagen we put the citizens first and everything we do is related to improving their quality of life • Over the past decades we have learned that it is possible to create a liveable city while at the same time improving the economy and reducing our CO2 emissions • Economic development, quality of life , and environmental improvements of the city can be mutually reinforcing
