Sun City Anthem Board of Directors

President’s report As we look forward to the new year, we also look forward to great things for Sun City Anthem. Our Association’s first employee, general manager Sandy Seddon, started right before Thanksgiving and looks forward to meeting SCA residents at the Board of Directors meet-and-greet on Thursday, December 3 starting at 6:30 p.m. Sandy Seddon in the Delaware Room. Please make it a point to come by and say hello to Sandy and to the Board members and your neighbors. Refreshments will be served. We look forward to seeing you there. Every year we have our annual election to fill Board vacancies. Usually we start planning in earnest right after the first of the year. The 2016 election cycle gives homeowners the opportunity to vote for three of the seven directors’ spots. Some important dates to remember are: • January 4, applications will be available in the Administrative offices. • January 29, the Election Committee will hold an informational workshop for all potential candidates. • February 12, 4:00 p.m., the deadline for filing papers for a candidacy. For more information on our Association’s election procedure, you can review the Election Manual and Election Calendar online at the Association website, www.sca-hoa.org. Just log in, click on Board/Committee / Elections / Election Committee Documents / and the 2016 calendar and manual are in the topmost folder.

The manual was approved by the board at its October meeting and is included in the published Board Book for that meeting. If you have not already signed up for SCA eblasts, I would urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to receive news and updates on the events and actions of the Association in a timely manner. As we move through transition to self-management and begin to complete our various budgeted projects, eblasts keep you up to date on important developments. To sign up, log on to the Association’s web site and follow the easy pop-up instructions, or visit the Membership Office and the customer service reps will be able to help you. Those of you who will be at our Activities Department’s sold-out New Year’s Eve gala in the Anthem Center grand ballroom on December 31 are, as always, in for a treat. To everyone – whether in the ballroom, traveling or home – have a Happy New Year, and be safe and healthy this holiday season. Bella L. Meese President

Viva Volunteers! ~ ~ Karen Lotspiech, Volunteers Coordinator

As we dash through the holiday season, we need to give thanks for a bounty of new and continuing volunteers. The Health and Fitness Committee has added three new members. Roger Corbman’s career in healthcare administration – most recently as Director of Admission for Touro University, Nevada, Medical School – has reinforced his interest in health and fitness. He’s a member of the Tennis Club, frequent user of our fitness facilities, has completed many marathons, and is the volunteer coach for the Touro basketball team. Prior to moving here in 2012, Diana Chang was a family physician in Redondo Beach, California for 25 years. A member of several SCA clubs, Dr. Chang has always been interested in health and fitness. She and the committee feel this is a perfect fit for both. Ralph Saccoliti brings a 16-year history of SCA volunteerism to his new positon on Health and Fitness. A founding member of the Bocce and Arts and Crafts Clubs, Ralph has served on several SCA task forces and most recently was a four-year member and chair of the Lifestyle Committee. The Election Committee has added John Kalenak to its roster. John is a fairly new SCA resident, but has quickly become actively involved in several clubs. He was looking for a way to utilize his verbal and written communication skills, and become part of a team; the Election Committee needed just such a volunteer. John is looking forward to working on the 2016 board of directors election. The Finance Committee is pleased to announce that Thomas Payne has joined the committee. Tom has extensive experience in the mortgage and real estate fields, serving as a mortgage loan officer, real estate broker and course instructor. An experienced numbers cruncher, Tom will be a valuable addition to the committee as we proceed toward self-management.

Speaking of the Finance Committee, they are seeking homeowners to fill some committee vacancies. Please see their article in the Committee Reports section that starts on page 10 in this magazine. The article outlines the committee’s needs and responsibilities. I will have a table at the SCA Clubs Fair at Anthem Center on Saturday, December 5. Please drop by and pick up a volunteers packet. It contains an overview of SCA opportunities to volunteer, helpful hints on pursuing a volunteer position, and an application. We need your contributions to maintain our outstanding lifestyle.

Dr. Morgan Crum and his family live here in Anthem. Morgan’s wife, Torey, is SCA’s very own Fitness Center manager.

Committee Reports ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW__________ Larry Griffith, subcommittee chair [email protected] Plan reviews second and fourth Thursdays 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Emerson/Franklin Room, Anthem Center Due to the holidays, only one plan review will be held this month on Thursday, December 10. As our community evolves and new members are introduced to our lifestyle, it is imperative that they are made aware of our desire and their responsibility to maintain and enhance Sun City Anthem. New homeowners are provided with Design Guidelines that outline the modifications that may be made to the exterior of their properties. The Architectural Review Committee was formed to make sure that these guidelines are adhered to. The ARC has a subcommittee which is the first, and often last, step in the process of changing the exterior of SCA residences. The subcommittee is composed of resident volunteers who are familiar with the Design Guidelines requirements and have the authority to approve changes. Requests for major additions, such as pools and casitas, are reviewed by the subcommittee but forwarded to the ARC for final approval. Members of our community are encouraged to attend any of our Thursday plan review sessions to get answers to questions they may have on making changes to their abodes.

COMMUNICATIONS________________ Jan Lane, chair 702-361-8858, [email protected] No meeting in December Eblasts are the best way for residents to receive notifications of last-minute changes in SCA activities and events. If you haven’t already signed up to receive them, do it today. Go to www.sca-hoa. org and follow the instructions, or seek help at the Membership Office in Anthem Center. If you have a background in writing, editing, public relations, website content management or other creative skills, please feel free to attend one of our meetings. You might find it a perfect fit for your skill set. Visit the Volunteers tab on the website menu bar, or contact Volunteers Coordinator Karen Lotspiech at [email protected] for more information.

COMMUNITY LIFESTYLE___________ Aletta Waterhouse, chair 702-485-2105, [email protected] No workshop in December Next meeting Friday, December 11 9:00 a.m., Arlington Room This meeting schedule is different from that announced at the November monthly meeting. Club officer elections. We want to thank the many SCA club members who stepped up in the last few weeks and volunteered to be club officers and board members. As we’ve said before, SCA clubs can’t exist without governing boards to bring about the wide 10 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

variety of activities we have in SCA. Remember that the members of the CLC are always ready to help club officers and boards. Annual new treasurers’ meeting. The annual meeting of newly-elected club treasurers to review the requirements, processes and deadlines for club audits and club end-of-year financial reports is early December. If your club did not have a representative to this mandatory meeting, contact your CLC liaison. There are important financial reporting deadlines at the end of January. PIRF review process. We are pleased to be working with the Properties and Grounds Committee to aid sponsors of possible proposed projects before they submit a Project/Item Request Form (PIRF). For clubs, we have posted on the committee’s page on the HOA website, www.sca-hoa.org, information that explains not only how the CLC is handling the review of PIRFs, but, also how the CLC will work with clubs in preparation for submitting a PIRF. A checklist of questions to aid project requestors in putting together a PIRF and a PIRF tracking chart to update clubs and homeowners on the status of submitted PIRFs are also on our webpage. Please contact your CLC liaison before filling out any of these forms. The CLC is here to serve the community and help to maintain and improve our lifestyle. Please contact us at the email address above if you have any concerns or questions.

COVENANTS________________________ The Board of Directors, as required in Article 5.2 of the bylaws, established a Deed Restriction Enforcement Committee. At Sun City Anthem this committee is called Covenants. The Covenants Committee is the hearing tribunal of the Association and conducts hearings pursuant to Section 3.26 of the bylaws and Article 7.4 of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions. Hearings are normally scheduled once a month and they are not open to the public or membership. A hearing is scheduled when a case cannot be resolved during the enforcement process. The Covenants Committee hearing tribunal reviews the information regarding an alleged violation and determines whether a violation of the standards set forth in the Governing Documents occurred. This committee is also responsible for imposing fines and/or sanctions. Following a hearing before the Covenants Committee, the alleged violator has the right to appeal the decision to the Board.

ELECTION_________________________ Judy Salvage, chair 702-558-0995, [email protected] Next meeting Tuesday, December 8 9:00 a.m., Concord Room The Election Committee is gearing up for the 2016 board election. The date for the Association-sponsored candidate forum event has been set for Sunday afternoon, February 28. A meet-andgreet social will take place on Wednesday, March 30 at 6:00 p.m. As an official meeting, attendance at Election Committee meetings is restricted to Association homeowners (SCACAI Rules and Regulations, 4.3.3).

Committee Reports FINANCE____________________________ Forrest Quinn, chair [email protected] Next meeting Wednesday, December 9 1:00 p.m., Arlington Room If you are a homeowner with finance or accounting experience and looking for a way to serve your community, SCA’s Finance Committee wants you. At the present time, the committee is functioning with just five members. This is the bare minimum to enable the committee to perform its functions as set forth in the Board Policy Manual. It is authorized to operate with as many as nine members and seems to operate most efficiently with seven members. Apart from the annual budget, the time commitment is approximately 10 to 15 hours per month. The Finance Committee advises and assists the SCACAI board of directors on many financial matters. The more important of these include overseeing the managing agent’s preparation of the annual budget; performing a detailed review, at least quarterly, of the unaudited financial statements including an analysis of significant variances; and an annual review of the financial statements and processes of the chartered clubs. Two FC members are generally appointed to SCA’s audit committee. The monthly Finance Committee meetings are open to the public where a current SCA financial update is presented prior to its being submitted to the board. Residents are encouraged to attend these meetings in order to better understand the financial operations of our community. Questions and constructive comments are valued, as such input provides new ideas and may identify items to be addressed at future meetings.

HEALTH AND FITNESS_______________ Edward Yesser, chair 702-459-4394, [email protected] or [email protected] Next meeting Tuesday, January 12 1:00 p.m., Bristol Room The Health and Fitness Committee serves to advise the SCA board in matters pertaining to improving the health and lifestyle of our residents and as a conduit to the Fitness Department in the areas of equipment procurement and matters pertaining to the health and fitness of our members.

We also serve as advocates for our membership to air their concerns, answer their questions and listen to their suggestions about anything to do with improving the lifestyle of the members of our community. Our meetings are open to every SCA member, and we encourage everyone to drop in during a meeting, listen, make comments, present ideas and get involved. Sometimes you may feel like your body is beginning to creak and fail you on the outside, but do you ever stop to consider the incredible work that is taking place on the inside? There is so much going on, and everything fits together so well, that it is impossible to comprehend. 1.

Your heart pumps approximately 2000 gallons of blood through its chambers every single day. It beats more than 100,000 times a day to achieve this incredible feat.

2.

You take 17,000 breaths a day on average, and don’t have to think about a single one of them. Yet if you want to stop breathing temporarily, you can voluntarily hold your breath. A typical pair of adult lungs can hold a huge six liters of air.

3.

Every day, your body ensures you don’t contract cancer thousands of times over. Cancer is formed when cells are altered in a way that reprograms their DNA. It is estimated that tens of thousands of cells suffer cancercausing lesions every day. But the body sends special enzymes scuttling around to inspect DNA strands for faults and fixes them before they turn into tumors.

4.

Your brain doesn’t stop working. It’s estimated that about 50,000 thoughts pass through it each day on average, although some scientists put the figure closer to 60,000. That is a whopping 35 to 48 thoughts every minute.

5.

The cells in your stomach lining produce an alkaline substance every few milliseconds to neutralize stomach acid. If they didn’t do this, your stomach would digest itself because some of the acids are strong enough to dissolve metals.

6. Most of the body’s energy is expelled via heat. Your body produces the same heat as 25 lightbulbs over the course of a single day. 7.

Red blood cells literally shoot around the body, taking less than 60 seconds to complete the full circuit. This means that each of yours makes 1440 trips around your body energized. Each cell lives for about 40 days before being replaced by a younger model. It’s no surprise their lifespan is short; having made 60,000 trips around the body, they must be exhausted.

8. Your hair (if you still have any) grows about half a millimeter per day, and the average adult with a full scalp has around 100,000 hairs on their head. 9. 12 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

The brain and mouth work together to allow us to speak an average of around 5000 words a day. Well, that’s if you’re a woman, because studies suggest that men only speak 2000 words.

Stay tuned for next month’s column as we explore other parts of our bodies. Happy holiday season. And let’s all make an early resolution to add at least one exercise program into our weekly schedules. Our bodies will love it, and we should enjoy it, too.

PROPERTIES AND GROUNDS________ Roy Montambeau, chair 702-896-0095, [email protected] or [email protected] Next meeting Tuesday, December 8 10:00 a.m., Arlington Room The Properties and Grounds Committee’s mission is twofold: to support the Sun City Anthem board of directors in the management and development of common properties and grounds within SCA; and to serve as an effective communications link with the resident community by receiving and evaluating concerns associated with the common properties and grounds. Suggestions for modifications, improvements or uses of existing facilities and/or land to benefit the community may be submitted by filling out a Project/Item Request Form. PIRFs may be obtained from the Anthem Center Membership Office or by clicking on the Maintenance & Facilities tab after logging in to www.sca-hoa.org. After receipt of the PIRF, P&G may request a meeting with the individual(s) who submitted the paperwork to discuss and clarify aspects of the proposal. Residents are welcome to attend monthly meetings or to contact the committee chair with questions, concerns or comments. December 2015 | Sun City Anthem | 13

Caregivers face a number of issues and challenges as they care for a loved one. In addition to being responsible for a myriad of duties ranging from assisting with normal daily activities to providing complex medical care, their lives are suddenly turned upside down overnight or while experiencing their loved one’s gradual decline. Caregivers often experience a decline in their own health, and can experience depression, anxiety, guilt and feelings of powerlessness. They experience isolation and stress in their other relationships while facing financial pressures. Often there is no one to turn to for help. Caregivers can develop specific coping strategies to stay healthy. One such strategy is talking with other caregivers and providing support to one another. A caregivers’ support group can provide a safe and confidential setting in which to share concerns, challenges and successes. No one should face the caregiving challenge alone.

Chairs and Co-chairs Needed CSG needs your help! We are searching for volunteers to chair the Home Maintenance and Equipment Committees. In talking with current volunteers, we have learned that these positions are perceived as full-time jobs. CSG redefined these positions to simplify procedures and reduce the time needed to successfully manage equipment and home maintenance activities. Each position typically requires about three hours a week. If you are interested in providing leadership so that CSG can continue to serve our community, please contact Jim Dolan, 702-616-9761 or [email protected], for more information. 14 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

Community Patrol Living Safely in Sun City Anthem EMERGENCY — 911 Non Emergency — 311 SCACP — 702-614-6751

Samaria Graham, CNWP coordinator for SCA, states, “The growth of our CNWP participants only validates the results of the nation’s study that an active CNWP deters criminal activity. We cannot stop crime. There will always be crime, but by our active involvement in the CNWP, we can reduce the probability of crime in Sun City Anthem.”

Meet our member of the month, Sunny Easwaran. Sunny has been a resident of SCA for nine years. He and his wife Mary came to SCA after having lived in California (three years) and New Jersey (18 years), where their two sons graduated from high schools in the Princeton area. Before that Sunny lived 18 years in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where he met Mary as a graduate student and where their sons were born. Sunny hails from India originally. During his working career, Sunny taught mathematics at the university level and then worked for 30 years in the telecommunications industry in IT and computer-related projects. He retired in 2013 and ever since has spent his time volunteering in SCA. He is a member of several clubs including Hiking, Computer, Book and Scrabble and maintains websites for some of these clubs. Sunny does house-check duties on Tuesdays and is actively involved in getting a website set up for the Community Patrol. He would like to see more people use the Patrol website to get information, and thus make it easier for all of us to do our volunteering activities. Neighbors watching out for neighbors. The Community Neighborhood Watch Program (CNWP) is one of the oldest and most effective national crime prevention programs. The program brings citizens together with police in a cooperative effort to battle crime and keep their area safe. In SCA, the CNWP is the thread that connects the cooperative actions of the Community Patrol and the Henderson Police Department to help provide safety in SCA. Twenty of SCA’s 24 villages have organized and are united by being the eyes for the police. CNWP signs have been placed at the entrances of these villages. There are 3608 residents who participate in the CNWP. The villages of Clubhouse, Foothills, Hillside and Meadow Vista are the only ones where residents have not organized a Community Neighborhood Watch Program. If residents in these villages would like to start a CNWP, send an email to the CNWP coordinator at [email protected]. 22 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

Some benefits of having a Community Neighborhood Watch Program. Your involvement in your village’s CNWP not only results in lower crime in your neighborhood, but more importantly results in making your village a better place to live. Key to this is getting to know your neighbors and looking out for each other. By attending CNWP meetings you get important tips about a variety of community services that include improving your home security and other ways to live more safely. Residents are always welcome to attend any CNWP meeting that is advertised on the LCD monitors in the three Centers, on SCA-TV, and in the Spirit and Relay publications. Join the Community Neighborhood Watch Program in SCA to learn more about how you can become a part of the solution. To become involved in your village’s CNWP, contact the facilitator of your village. To find out the facilitator’s name, send an email to [email protected], or call Community Patrol at 702-614-6751. Please consider becoming part of the group that helps keep SCA a safe place to live; show the outside world that we are an active community that looks out for our neighbors. All SCA residents should participate. The more participation, the stronger and more effective the program is. Participation is easy. All you need to do is get to know your neighbors and watch out for them; report suspicious activities, people or vehicles to 311 immediately; and attend one CNWP meeting each year. If you can do even more, CNWP needs volunteers to serve as coordinators, facilitators, co-facilitators and photographers of CNWP events. In particular, the villages of Pinnacle, Model and Tall Mesa need of people to assist in leadership roles. Community Patrol wants you. Consider becoming a volunteer. The SCA Community Patrol is always looking for new volunteer members. We invite all those who are interested to stop by our office and fill out an application. At that time, we will set up an orientation and training schedule. If you have any questions about what we do, contact me. Living safely. Remember, living safely is based on what you do. If you have any issues that you like to see addressed here, please contact me by calling the Community Patrol office at the number above or by email below. Stephen C. Anderson Chief, Community Patrol [email protected]

The purpose of the Arts and Crafts Club is to promote interest and learning in various types of arts, art mediums, art textures and materials and a wide variety of crafts that can be accomplished on many levels of competency. The club also encourages fellowship among its members. This month we want to highlight some of the good works our members do by donating their time, supplies and talent to help others. The Stamping/Cardmaking Group is broken into three smaller groups which represent beginners, intermediates and seasoned card makers. It’s a fun hobby and great friendships are derived from the group get-togethers. Every year, these groups get together for exchanges of old equipment, stamps and paper. Any remaining supplies are donated to schools and senior adult-living places. Some members of the Stamping Group also send cards to servicemen and women to use. This year a group led by Liz Walek-Sowin went a step further and taught card-making classes to those in adultliving communities such as The Homestead.

Sandy Dyan, Mosaics Group leader, donates some of her pieces to raise money for Friends of Sloan Canyon, a nonprofit organization that provides public outreach education. They also clean trails and help preserve and protect Sloan Canyon and rock art. The funds raised through Sandy’s pieces help provide lunches for the crews and buy needed supplies and tools. Bernadette O’Neill, a member of the Stamping Group, has been chair of the Green Valley Presbyterian Church Women’s craft guild (called the Gingerbread Women). They put on an annual crafts bazaar the second Saturday in October. They have 50 members who donate time and monies for charities and unbudgeted items for the church. This year they raised $11,000. Bernadette makes and donates handmade cards, a skill she learned from our club’s stamping classes. She has been doing this for three years. This year alone, she made 180 cards for the fair.

Larry Ashment, a member of our Woodcarving Group, used his talent to create pieces that were donated to the New Mexico Buckskin Horse Youth Division, a young group of equestrian riders who compete throughout the year. Larry’s donated pieces were used in a silent auction to raise funds for the group’s activities in the state.

Robin Armstrong

Jeri McCurnin, group leader of Knit/Crochet, reports that some of her group also knit or crochet items for charity or church craft sales. Marcia Thompson, group leader of Scrapbooking, reports that once a year her group holds a “treasure swap,” when they encourage members to look through their craft supplies to determine those items or objects they no longer need and to bring them to the swap. Unclaimed items – such as paper, ink, cutting tools, stickers – are then donated to an elementary school, assisted living facility and even the Foundation Assisting Seniors. Arts and Crafts Club activities are conducted in Independence Center. Our club has many different groups, and you are sure to find something of interest. Visit our website, www.sca-acc.com, where information is available on the dates, times and contact information for the various Arts and Crafts group activities. Club membership is open to all residents. Visit the Arts and Crafts Club’s display cases in the Anthem Fitness Center and Independence Center. Throughout the year, examples of our club’s many groups’ work are displayed in these cabinets, which are put together by Sandi Athey, second vice president on our board. The display cases are changed out every few months. In addition, many of our members donated completed pieces, such as woodcarvings, mosaic or fused glass pieces, for gift baskets to raise money in the Foundation Assisting Seniors events, Community Service Group events, and Women’s Club lunch raffles which benefit a different charity each month.

_Some items on display are also for sale; call Sandi Athey or ask at the Independence Center front desk. It’s about diversity, about getting to know each other, and it’s a great opportunity to bridge cultural gaps and exchange fresh ideas. The Bid Whist Club has enjoyed another fun and successful year. We had numerous special events including a guest speaker who discussed black history in Las Vegas during the time Boulder Dam was being constructed. We also had two tournaments; congratulations to the first winners, Vivian Curtis and Carolyn Spencer, and the second tournament winners, Hazel Gary and Tony Mason. Club dues are $10 annually. Come join the party! Contact our club president Sandra Miller at [email protected] for additional information.

BOOK______________________________ The Book Club meets on the third Thursday of the month from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Morris/ Nelson Room at Independence Center to discuss a book that members have read. On December 17, we will discuss The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. For more information about the Book Club, visit scabookclub.com. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early 19th-century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s 11th birthday, when she is given ownership of 10-year-old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next 35 years as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love.

In October, the members elected new officers for 2016: Cheryl Kraft, president; Dan McLean, vice president; Beth Weddle, secretary; and Dzintra Landers, treasurer.

As the stories build to a riveting climax, Handful will endure loss and sorrow, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah will experience crushed hopes, betrayal, unrequited love and ostracism before leaving Charleston to find her place alongside her fearless younger sister, Angelina, as one of the early pioneers in the abolition and women’s rights movements.

For more information or to join, please call club president Bill Hoover at 702-577-3577, vice president/secretary Howard Richards at 702-263-0795, or treasurer Dzintra Landers at 702-492-6778. Much more information is on our website, www.scapool.org.

_Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented, including Handful’s cunning mother Charlotte who courts danger in her search for something better.

BOCCE___________________________________

This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment and expression will leave no reader unmoved.

For those who simply want to play, have fun and meet new people, there is also a social flight.

Ever wanted to learn to play bocce ball? Now is your chance. Every Wednesday in December at 6:00 p.m., lessons will be given. No need to sign up; just show up. We are looking forward to seeing you at the courts.

Clubs CERAMICS__________________________ If you’ve never had the experience of creating a clay masterpiece but would like to, this is the club for you. We paint, glaze and fire pieces that are already molded, although some of us start from scratch with just a block of clay. Ceramics is the perfect way to create special pieces for gifts, or to decorate your home and yard with your own creations. The holidays are almost upon us and here’s a great way to bring the holiday spirit into your home. The featured items were painted by member Cathy Doll using acrylic paint on ceramic bisque ware. Acrylics allow greater control in color choices, and finer details when applying than glaze.

The Ceramics Room in Anthem Center is open to members every day except Wednesday mornings. Monitors are available 9:00 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. DEMOCRATS________________________ “Democracy demands an educated and informed electorate” ~ Thomas Jefferson SCA Democrats continue to address critical issues of the day, especially those impacting seniors and their families. Our purpose is to educate, inform, excite and recruit those of you committed to making a difference as we prepare for the 2016 elections. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month, starting at 6:30 p.m. in Independence Center. On December 9, our special guest speaker will be Jon Ralston. Our annual holiday party will be held at this meeting. Join us for a night of pizza, salad and good cheer. Our special guests at the November meeting were former Senator Justin Jones and ACLU legal director Amy Rose, the team fighting Nevada’s school voucher law. This law, passed by the legislature in 2014 and inappropriately called Education Savings Accounts, takes money from public schools and allows the money to be used for private and parochial schools. The law has been challenged in court as unconstitutional because the Nevada constitution specifically bars the use of public education funds for private sectarian school education. The other guest at the November meeting was Chandler Levrich, elected representative of District A (which encompasses Sun City Anthem and Seven Hills) for the Clark County Democratic Party. 36 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

Jon Ralston, host of Ralston Live on PBS Las Vegas

He is responsible for 167 precincts and is coordinator for precinct caucus training in District A. He provided information about caucus procedures to our members to prepare us for the upcoming presidential caucus which will be held in February. Mock caucus training exercises start at SCA in January. Volunteers will be needed to organize and chair the precincts. Please join us to learn more about how you can participate in this important event. Nominations were accepted at the November meeting for the board of directors, and we are now collecting dues of $15 per member for 2016. Our website is up and running and contains valuable information for members such as news, events, election and

voter-registration information. Visit www.sca-dems.com before the next meeting and let us know what you think. Suggestions are welcome … and so are volunteers! 2016 meetings will change to the third Wednesday of each month, and our club is excited about some alreadyscheduled meetings. Our February 17 guest will be Joe Duffy, State Director for Safe Nevada. The group supports the campaign to pass the background-check initiative which qualified for the 2016 ballot. This should be a high priority for consideration during the February 20 caucus. Caucus-goers should submit a resolution to support the ballot for platform-committee consideration. Join us to learn more about this important issue. For more information on SCA Democrats, send an email to [email protected].

SCAWGC team celebrates first-place win

WOMEN’S GOLF The Women’s Golf Club has been racing through the fall from one event to another. Etsuko Judd won the 2015 club championship by two strokes in the two-day tournament October 29-30 on both the Concord and the Lexington. Etsuko is a three-peat, having won the championship previously in 2010 and 2012. Runnerup is Joan Readyoff who is the net club champion. Congratulations to both, who battled it out on a windy and chilly second day on the Lexington.

But the blue team roared back on the second day of individual match play, winning the title with 36 points (vs. 24 for the red team). Historically, the standings are three wins for the red, two wins for the blue, and one amazing tie in 2014. Members of the blue team were awarded $20 gift cards for the Revere Pro Shop. Gary Cranford of UBS, who sponsors both clubs, hosted the cocktail party on the eve of the tournament and closest-to-thepin awards for both men and women on the second day. Joyce Haughey picked up the women’s award and Joe Sortino was the winner for the men; each received a $100 gift card to Texas de Brazil. Hospitality committee co-chairs Barbara Ramsey and Laurie Sieberg and SCAWGC board members hosted new club members at the new member meet-and-greet at Barb’s home on October 26. Ten of this year’s 14 new members attended. The gathering provided an opportunity for new members to learn more about our club and its activities. Team play co-chairs Julie Sena and Sharon Bunker generously hosted all members of the 2015 team for lunch on October 26 at Buckman’s Grille. The team was honored for winning first place gross for 2014 and 2015 in the Women’s Southern Nevada Golf Association’s team play tournament which involves several women’s golf clubs in Southern Nevada.

Sixty members of the Revere Men’s Club and the SCA Women’s Golf Club battled it out for two days on the Concord October 20 and 21 for bragging rights in the sixth annual mixed Ryder Cup. At the end of the first day, only one point separated the red and blue teams.

Our annual holiday party is only a few days away. Co-chairs Sharon Francia and Carol Witmer promise a challenging putting contest, followed by a great lunch and annual club awards. Our next general meeting is on Wednesday, January 20 at 9:00 a.m. in the Delaware Room in Anthem Center. Upcoming away trips are Phoenix, Arizona, February 29 to March 4; Mammoth ski trip, April 3 to 8; Sequoia, June 26 to 28; Yosemite, June 28 to July 1; and Mammoth Lakes, California, August 22 to 26. For information about hikes, upcoming away trips, club activities and club contacts, visit http://sunhikers.homestead.com. As of the end of October, Bob Fowler, Mike Carey, David Hutton, Gail Shull and Dave Wuenschel have been added to the roster of the Century Club, meaning they have hiked at least 100 miles on SCA Hiking Club local and away trails since January 1 of this year.

Sedona, Arizona, September 14 to 18 No matter what hike you chose, you couldn’t go wrong. There were interesting red rock formations in every direction. The first morning after breakfast it was pouring rain, but it cleared up by the time the hikes got underway and the weather cooperated the rest of the week. The most popular hike was the West Fork of Oak Creek, which was repeated on all three days so that most people could do it. This was a trek through beautiful scenery which required 44 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

crossing the creek multiple times. Hikers wore water shoes so that they could simply wade through the water rather than trying to balance on rocks. Marg’s Draw was a very convenient hike with a trail head directly behind our hotel. After a short steep climb at the beginning, the hikers could walk along the ridge with beautiful views all around. Devil’s Bridge was a nice arch that we could see from below, and then climb up to walk across. Many in the group were brave enough to walk across this rock formation. Mt. Wilson was the most strenuous hike attempted by the group, but the view from the top was phenomenal and well worth the effort. Unfortunately, the wind was a bit brisk at the summit, so we weren’t able to spend much time sitting at the edge to admire the view. The hike to Fay Canyon Arch and Long Canyon Ruins offered more delightful scenery and the opportunity to see some ancient ruins. On the final evening, we had our happy hour in a parking lot near the airport. This was the spot that was famous for observing the beautiful sunsets in the Sedona area. What a fitting finale for a wonderful trip, and many thanks to Keith and Beth Lane for leading us on another super adventure.

We do not hold regular meetings but we have four or five funfilled events each year. All of our members are invited to help plan and participate in everything we do. We held three very successful events this year … at least that’s what our members tell us. We had a block party Italiano, a mangia-and-movie night, and most recently our Columbus Day party. started with Carnivale, then our block party Italiano in July, our Mangia and Movie night, and most recently in October, our Columbus Day Party. And our annual Christmas gala is on December 6. Our Columbus Day party on October 15 was at the Italian American Club. With over 150 celebrants, we did what we do very well – eat, drink, dance and laugh. The Nite Kings encouraged us to dance the night away, and we raffled off prizes.

46 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

Our Christmas gala is Sunday, December 6 at the M Resort. This will be a very special holiday party. In addition to dinner, dancing and awesome raffles, we will be entertained by Jimmy Hopper. MAH JONGG________________________ “A woman’s place is at the Mah Jongg table.” The Mah Jongg Club promotes the recreational, social and competitive aspects of this enjoyable and popular game. Over 300 club members play both American (western) and Asian versions of the game.

48 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

The club has three reserved play times — Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 4:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the Morris/Nelson Room in Independence Center. The club keeps a supply of mah jongg sets and table covers on hand for use by members. You must be a club member to play during our reserved play time. New members may join at any time; annual dues are $7. Club officers make every effort to place members in groups so that everyone has an opportunity to play. Lists are posted on the bulletin board in the Morris/Nelson Room. Contact Nancy Lebish, our membership coordinator, at 702-614-8694 or owlster@cox. net for more information. On November 10, the membership elected a new slate of club officers for 2016: Liz Breier, president; Ricky Rosenthal, vice president; Barbara Argentar, secretary; and Sherry Soloman, treasurer. Our recent American mixer was another great success. Members got to play with members they hadn’t previously played with or even met. We had great food, great raffle prizes and great fun. Our next event is our annual holiday luncheon on Friday, December 11 at the M Resort’s Studio B buffet. Do you want learn how to play the American or Asian versions of this addictive game? The club sponsors training classes for both versions. Non-members of the club are welcome to take a first lesson without joining to make certain they like the game, but you must be a club member or join the club in order to take the full course. Lessons are usually given to groups of four to five players and can run anywhere from three to five weeks depending on how quickly each individual picks up the game. Contact Liz Breier, [email protected], for more information about classes. Join the Mah Jongg Club! We promise you a delightful afternoon at each of our events and the opportunity to meet fellow SCA residents while playing in Independence Center during our reserved play times. Do not hesitate to contact any club officer should you have any questions. And please continue to support our club by attending our socials and mixers. Follow us on Facebook by searching for SCA Mah Jongg Club on your Facebook page. And check out our website at www.scamahjonggclub.com.

PADDLE TENNIS_____________________ The Paddle Tennis Club invites you to visit our courts at Liberty Center and check out this easy-to-learn sport. Come dressed to play and one of our members will be happy to hit some balls with you and review the game rules. You should be up to speed in just a few minutes, especially if you have previously played tennis, pickleball or another racquet sport. Paddle tennis is basically half-court tennis with the same scoring and rules, but only half of the running and no strenuous overhead serves. If you don’t like to run after tennis balls, this game is for you. We use a fiberglass paddle and low-energy tennis balls. The club has balls and racquets available for check-out at the Liberty Center reception desk, so you do not need to buy any equipment to play. However, to avoid injury, please wear nonmarking court shoes and stay hydrated during the warm weather. You can play at any time. However, the club has scheduled drop-in play that varies by season; check the Liberty Center court bulletin boards for the current schedule. Our club is all about getting your exercise and having fun playing and mingling with fellow members. Dues are $5 per year and membership forms are available courtside. See you on the courts.

PAN_________________________________ Weekly pan sessions are Mondays and Saturdays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. We’re located in the lower gallery of Anthem Center. Please arrive 10 minutes early for table assignments. Choose any or all sessions that fit your schedule. We are looking forward to our annual holiday party on December 7 at Brio Tuscan Grille. Thank you to Fay Schoenfeld for handling all the arrangements. The Pan Club is open to all SCA residents who want to enjoy a good game of cards that has a rummy-based style. As this year closes and a new one approaches, why not join in and learn a new game or return to an old-time favorite? Lessons or a refresher course are available; contact Frank Eckenrod at 702-570-7567. We will have new club officers for 2016. Look for upcoming social events and have fun with us. If you have questions about membership, contact communications chair Carol Franklin at [email protected].

PARTY BRIDGE______________________ Party Bridge is held in the Emerson/Franklin Room on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Clubs PERFORMING ARTS________________ Whew, it’s the end of another exciting year! Where did the time go? For many of the members of the Performing Arts Club, countless hours during 2015 were spent rehearsing. Those dedicated hours culminated in wonderful entertainment for our community. We started off the year with the January production of C’Mon Get Happy, brought to you by Readers Theater. This was followed in March with the always well-received Choraliers concert titled A Musical Mosaic & Americana. Last June’s production of Alice in Vegas Land retold a familiar story in a very Vegas way. In October, Disco Fantasy brought back some great memories; the audiences packed the theatre to relive the music of the disco era and laugh at the adventures of three ordinary guys who had the idea of creating a TV show. November found our community back in Freedom Hall for another afternoon of laughs during the Readers Theater production of The Magic of Laughter. Throughout the year, residents have enjoyed twice-monthly karaoke, on the second and fourth Wednesdays, as well as special karaoke events … all of this brought to you by the hard work of your friends and neighbors in the Performing Arts Club!

50 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

As this year ends, we excitedly look forward to 2016. On Friday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m., our talented Choraliers will once again entertain us with their beautiful voices at their next show, Music from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Put it on your calendar, as these shows quickly sell out. Tickets go on sale December 12. The Choraliers continue to search for a second piano accompanist for their Monday rehearsals in Freedom Hall, as well as for their next show. The Choraliers are also looking for bass singers to round out the chorus, which rehearses in Freedom Hall on Mondays at 9:00 a.m. No audition is required; just a love of singing. For more information, contact Jean Pearl at [email protected] or show up at Freedom Hall any Monday at 8:45 a.m. What else is on the horizon? Already scheduled is Viva la Vida: A Celebration with a Latin Beat. This is an original musical extravaganza, written and to be directed by Carmen Calabro. Experience the beauty and fun of Latin music, dance and comedy. Performances will be June 3, 4 and 5. Everyone is welcome at the orientation on Tuesday, January 12 at 6:00 p.m. Join the excitement and discover your unknown talents! Or just come to the orientation to hear what it is all about and meet some great people. Auditions will follow a week after orientation in

Freedom Hall on Tuesday, January 19 and Thursday, January 21 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The director of this show is looking for a male who has had extensive training in Argentine tango dancing. If you have the skill, time to spare and want some excitement, please contact the director at [email protected]. Last month, PAC announced a writing contest for the best oneact play. This competition is open to all residents and the winning entry will be performed on the Freedom Hall stage. Here’s more detail about what constitutes a one-act play. An “act” is a unit of time within a drama during which the story unfolds. The usual length of time for an act ranges from 30 to 60 minutes, although it can be shorter or longer. What makes a one-act play tricky to write is that the introduction, predicament and resolution need to be achieved in a very short time and handled in a believable way.

Sharon Bunker, human-costumer winner, Leigh Wright and Charlie Bouchard

While a one-act play has, of course, only one act, it can have multiple scenes. Scenes are usually separated by location or time. The number of scenes will depend upon how the author has structured the story. Are you up for the challenge? Do you have any questions? For more information, please contact Harriet Wise at [email protected]. Deadline for admissions is December 1 of next year (2016). Don’t forget about our clowns. They are always seeking more members. No experience is necessary, just a desire to make people smile and laugh. They not only add their cheer to many SCA events; they entertain at various venues such as Clark County hospitals, schools and nursing homes. They probably have as much fun as they provide others! And they get to wear some cool costumes and makeup! Contact [email protected] for more information. As you might be able to tell from all of the information in this article, PAC really does have something for everyone. Besides singing, dancing, acting, clowning around, writing and directing, we are also always looking for people to usher or work backstage. How about learning about lighting or sound? There are people anxious to train you. Please contact club president Harriet Wise at [email protected] for information. She is waiting for your email.

PET________________________________ The Pet Club had a great meeting in October. The pet rescue Street Dogz explained the group’s mission to club members. Street Dogz travels around the county looking for homeless folks with animals. They try to provide spay and neuter services for these animals, along with food for the pets and their owners. Club members opened their hearts and wallets for this wonderful rescue. Thanks to all those who helped with the raffles that provided much-needed funds for this worthy group.

Pat and Debbie Glazier with their little pumpkin, Butler

Our Howloween party followed the meeting. Prizes for best costumes were awarded to pets and their humans. As you can see, this year’s costumes were the best. The December 16 meeting will be at Buckman’s at 10:30 a.m. A wonderful buffet, priced at $5 per member, will be provided. The club will pick up the rest of the cost. Since this is indoors pets are not invited; only legitimate service dogs are allowed. The Pet Club hotline, used to report lost or found animals, is 702-638-5757. Do not call this number for pet-sitter services or groomers. The Pet Club email is [email protected] Pet Club president Frank Bianca with Maya, Charlie and Alex

PORCELAIN_________________________ Our club meets on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Porcelain and Ceramics Room at Anthem Center. Experienced members are available to share their expertise in painting on porcelain. Explore or expand your creativity in painting on porcelain.

Carly Fiorina, candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, is scheduled to speak at Anthem Center the morning of Wednesday, December 16. This event will be held in the Grand Ballroom and will be open to the entire Sun City Anthem community. Registration will be required, as seating will be limited. Registration details will be displayed on publicity posters in early December in the three recreations centers. Information will also be available on our website, www.thercsca.org. The club regularly invites conservative candidates and elected officials to speak to members. Each forum is followed by a question-and-answer session to allow members' interaction with the speaker. The purposes of the RCSCA are to promote the principles and core values of the Republican Party through education programs, publicity and forums for discussion and debate; to encourage such civic duties as voter-registration drives, candidate forums and constituent services workshops; and to identify, promote and support Republican candidates for office.

To increase the range and number of items completed and start painting immediately, club members paint on white glazed porcelain items available from local stores or mail order. The yearly membership is $5 and to keep your costs low, the club provides the paints needed as well as some other required supplies. For information about the Porcelain Club, please call Carol Montambeau at 702-896-0095 or stop by any Wednesday during club hours.

Please join us for good food and good company as we catch a deep breath before the 2016 super crucial election. We plan to recognize some of our outstanding members and their efforts as we complete our fifth year as a chartered club at SCA. Bring a guest. There may be a few fun door prizes as well. Hope to see you all there. At our November 14 meeting, we elected club officers for next year. The slate of candidates proposed by the nominating committee of the RCSCA board was Don Manning, president; Virginia Finnegan, vice president; Karl Johnson, treasurer; and Suzanne Arnona, secretary. RV___________________________________

On the Road with Dianne Hahn

Yea, it’s that time of year again, the holiday season! And I’m making my lists and checking them twice. (I hope Santa is, too.) The radio is playing my favorite holiday music and I’m humming along. Soon my feet will probably be aching from too much shopping, and I’ll be knee-deep in ribbon and colorful paper. My fingers will be numb from all that wrapping and my eyes will blur as the hours stretch on, but I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. Are all of your cards and update notes written and in the mail? I’m still working on mine. For many RVers, the holidays are the highlight of our year. We’ll be getting together with family and friends; sharing, caring, hugging and laughing. We’ll be putting up a tree and decorating the house. We’ll have mashed potatoes, turkey and gravy to look forward to. If fruitcake is your thing, go for it. Otherwise, indulge in a little piece of pecan or pumpkin pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dollop of fresh, whipped cream on top. Ain’t life grand in the land of the free and the brave! If Christmas isn’t your thing, I hope you have a happy 54 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

holiday celebration. Whatever you do, keep it stress-free and safe. Cherish your loved ones, hug your friends and stop with the grumpy! 2015 has been a good year for most of us. Thank you for turning to “R” in the Spirit magazine every month and reading all about us. We love keeping in touch with you via this column. Kudos to Sherryl Daly for her expert editing, and to Tom Smith for answering the Help! emails when I’m stuck. A salute to our president, John Strasner, for his leadership and support. And thanks to my hubby, Donnie, for listening … over and over again. Many thanks to all the RVers who have shared their experiences and photos this year. We number over 175 members now. We travel the roads and byways of the country with a spirit of camaraderie. There have been many fun rallies and trips, and we’ve enjoyed the views and stopped to camp and break bread together. We’ve had a glass or two of wine, and we’ve sat and chatted over coffee. The members of this club are a unique, warm group. We have fun together and care about each other. And isn’t that what life should be about? If you are interested in joining the club, or if you would like more information, please drop in to one of our meetings. You’ll find us in the Penn Room at Independence Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Come in January, for our 4:00 p.m. start time. We do not meet in December as most of us are out and about in our RVs, but you can give John Strasner a call at 702-270-9825 if you have questions. Or check out our website; Tom Smith keeps it lively and fun at www.sca-rv-club.com. To close out this year, take a peek at some fun photos from a few of our 2015 rallies. And so dear friends, have a merry merry and a happy happy! Cheers from all of us in the SCA RV Club! Until next time, this is Dianne Hahn. See you on the road!

Clubs SCRABBLE_________________________

~ by Linda Kroll So here we are in the last month of the year 2015, and we are preparing to welcome in the new year 2016. My how the time has flown. I for one look forward to the new year with fresh beginnings and renewed vigor. We have so much to be thankful for in this wonderful country, and to be living here in Sun City Anthem where we are able to enjoy all that life offers. This month I would like to write about IDIOMS.

_This is only a small sample of idioms. There are so many more that you will encounter. _The Scrabble Cub welcomes all SCA residents to join us every Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Emerson/ Franklin room to play Scrabble. Dues are $10 per year. I dedicate this column to Ira Ellis. Ira was a member of the Scrabble Club for many years. He was a dear friend, always there to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it. His passing leaves a void, and the Scrabble Club has a much different vibe without Ira there. He will be missed. Rest in peace dear Ira.

An idiom is a word or phrase that is not taken literally, like "bought the farm" has nothing to do with purchasing real estate, but refers to dying. Idiom also refers to a dialect or jargon of a group of people either in a certain region or a group with common interests, like in science, music, art or business. Every language has its own collection of wise sayings. They offer advice about how to live and also transfer some underlying ideas, principles and values of given culture/society. These sayings are called "idioms" or proverbs if they are longer. Here is a list of the most commonly used idioms and sayings, followed by their meanings. ADD INSULT TO INJURY: To further a loss with mockery or indignity. BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD: When an attempt fails and it's time to start all over. COSTS AN ARM AND A LEG: Used when something is very expensive. DEVIL'S ADVOCATE: To present a counter argument. ELIVS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING: The show has come to an end. I'ts all over. FEEL A BIT UNDER THE WEATHER: Feeling slightly ill. GIVE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT: Believe someone's statement without proof. HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD: Do or say something exactly right. IT TAKE TWO TO TANGO: Actions need more than one person. JUMP ON THE BANDWAGON: Join a popular trend or activity. KEEP SOMETHING AT BAY: Keep something away. LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE: Do not disturb a situation as it is. MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT: Come to the point and leave out details. NOT PLAYING WITH A FULL DECK: Someone who lacks intelligence. ONCE IN A BLUE MOON: Happens very rarely. PIECE OF CAKE: A job, task, or other activity that is easy or simple. STEAL SOMEONE'S THUNDER: Take credit for something someone else did. TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT: Not to take what someone says too seriously. 56 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

SEWING AND QUILTING_____________ It’s hard to believe that this is December already. Our club has much to be grateful for this past year and we’ve been very busy. Here are just a few highlights. Fall crafts fair. We had our most successful fair ever this past October. We have to thank all the residents of Sun City Anthem who support us all year long and particularly at the craft fairs and for the ticket sales of our raffle quilts. Several new products – seen in the photos – are mah jongg mats, key fobs, children’s aprons and mesh zipper bags. We also have wine mesh totes and U.S. map quilts available. We are still selling tickets for our raffle quilt, “A Very Berry Christmas.” The drawing will be held at the clubs fair on Saturday, December 5. Hurry and get those tickets and you could still surprise someone (or yourself) with this gorgeous machineembroidered quilt. Tickets are only $1 each or six for $5.

Sewing Resource Circle. We implemented a new program this year called Sewing Resource Circle (SRC), which meets the first and third Fridays of each month except for December. The first Friday is a room orientation followed by a brief sewing practice project. The third Friday, members participate in a skillbuilding session. Experienced sewers are available to lend a hand. SRC was designed so new members and others could acquaint or reacquaint themselves with the machines and the workings of our Sewing Room. Members will have more confidence and skills to move right into taking classes or participating in our workshops. As of this coming January, the name will be changed to Sewing 101. The projects for January are on our website under Weekly News. Charities. Six local charities made a 15-minute presentation at monthly meetings throughout the year. It was decided that monies left over at year end, including raffle quilt proceeds, would be divided among the top three charities. Members voted in November and 50 percent of leftover monies will be given to SAFE House, 30 percent to ConKerr Cancer, and 20 percent to Pets for Vets. The Sewing Club also provides support to Robert Taylor Elementary School in Henderson with clothing items and many special projects. At Christmas, 11 families will receive food gift cards and gifts for their children courtesy of the club. It’s very rewarding to be able to give back to our local community. Clubs fair. Saturday, December 5 is the clubs fair in the Anthem ballroom. This is a chance for residents to speak with members of different clubs, ask questions and obtain membership forms for 2016. Officers and members of our club will be on hand to answer any questions. We will also have a lot of holiday items for sale for those last-minute gifts. So be sure to stop by. Visit our website, www.scasaq.org, for a monthly calendar, list of classes, minutes and photos of show-and-tell items.

SHANGHAI RUMMY (PUSH)_________ Join us in playing Shanghai Rummy, also known as Push, on Mondays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Emerson/Franklin Room. Push is an easy version of rummy with three or four players at each table, and we complete two or three games in an afternoon. _If you have never played Push, contact club president Arlene Bloomfield at [email protected] or 702-269-2088 to arrange a lesson. Dues are $5 a year, and card racks are available for $15. As the game progresses, you will have many cards in your hand, so the racks are a great convenience. You will have fun with this group, so join us. December 2015 | Sun City Anthem | 57

Clubs SILVER FOXES_____________________ Our trip to China was simply amazing. For nine days we toured, ate, met the people and just downright enjoyed ourselves. The plane ride there was comfortable and they kept on feeding us to make the time go quickly; it actually did. The hotels were beautiful and very luxurious after a full day of sightseeing. Shanghai – what a city, it’s divided into old and new parts. The skyline on the new side was colorful and modern looking. Set on the Bund River, we saw it at night all lit up and colorful. Of course we shopped. Silk, jade and pearls were all just waiting for our group to snatch them up and did we indulge … great fun. We are hoping to find a trip like this for the spring. We did so much at an amazingly low price. We’ll be looking for another great bargain. Our Foxy Ladies lunch is always the third Thursday of the month at noon. Save Deember 17 for lunch at the Rio Secco Golf Club. This continues to be a club favorite and we thank you for making it a success.

58 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

Our holiday party is December 4 at Buckman’s. We’ll be entertained by Leon Gilliam, a fabulous singer who performed with the Platters back in the day. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to party. This will be a delicious dinner complete with salad, entrée, a selection of desserts and a coffee bar. We will also be giving away lots of prizes to thank our members for their loyalty. We have several interested members for our new book club as well as the gourmet club, so email [email protected] if you are interested as we are forming the groups very soon. Women Foxes, make sure you sign your husband up for membership if you plan to attend functions as a couple. Otherwise, you will incur a guest fee if he accompanies you. Check www.sca-silverfoxes.com for details on all of our upcoming activities including general meetings, lunches, dinners and day trips. Also you can check the kiosk by the Fitness Center for our flyers.

Clubs SINGLES_____________________________ If you are a single resident of our community and would like to meet other single members, plan to join us for TTime on the first and third Fridays from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Order a drink of your choice and mingle with us, and you’ll find out all about our club. TTimes are usually at Buckman’s, but sometimes they are at Café V. Our monthly calendar will show the location. We dine afterwards at a nearby restaurant. Sign up for the dinner at TTime. At our TTimes, greeters will make you feel welcome and tell you about our exciting get-togethers. You’ll be able to sign up to become a member – dues are $10 per year. Eileen Shepardson will have a signup sheet at TTime if you wish to join our club, or call her at 702-269-8151. Our holiday party will be Saturday evening, December 12 at the M, at a cost of $70 for members. Our members are an active bunch. We have many cooking clubs that meet once a month for dinner at a host’s home; guests bring food that conforms to the host’s theme or menu. We occasionally have soirees, which are potluck dinners, on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A member volunteers his/her home, all members are invited, and guests are asked to bring a dish and beverage of their choice. Call Eileen Shepardson at 702-269-8151 if you need more information about these soirees. As a Singles Club member, you can pick and choose club events and be as active and social as you like. We get together to play games, go bowling and to the movies, take bus trips to shows on the Strip and The Smith Center. If you like to dance or just listen to a great band, join us on Wednesdays at South Point from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. where Déjà Vu plays. Admission is $5, which includes a drink and $5 free play with your Player’s Card. We sit together and enjoy each other’s company. Board meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Concord Room. If you need information about our club or upcoming activities, visit our website at www.scasingles. com, where you will find our monthly calendar and events, or call our president, Joan Moore, at 702-476-9167. We look forward to meeting you and having you join this fun, active club.

SOFTBALL_________________________ The Softball Club invites all SCA residents to join in the fun. Men and women, if you enjoy playing slow-pitch softball, come watch for a time or two – or better still, bring baseball shoes, a glove and a bat, and start playing. The club will provide a bat if you don’t have one. You can play up to three times free, to see whether you still enjoy the game. After the third time, we will ask you to join the club and pay $35 ($17.50 after July 1) annual dues to continue playing. A typical day at the field starts with individual warm-up, usually stretching and running, and then a little throwing. After that, we have batting practice for around one-half hour before dividing into between two to four teams, depending on the number of players who show up on any given day. We are usually at the field for around three hours. We play Tuesday and Friday mornings at a City of Henderson park. Most of the time we’re at Anthem Hills Park, which is right down the hill from us – head north on Anthem Parkway, make a right at the light at Reunion, turn left just before the Del E. Webb Middle School, make the next left into the park. On your right, 60 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

you’ll see a lamppost sign that says “Field 1” … go up the hill to the field. Sometimes the City of Henderson moves us to another park, which is usually Vivaldi Park on Seven Hills Drive. For start times and to verify locations, contact John Paul Molfetta at 702-361-4572 or [email protected]. Also check our website at www.scasoftballclub.wordpress.com. You must sign the Application/Release form before you can play. It’s on the website; you can bring it with you on your first visit if you like. If you need more information, email club president John Paul Molfetta at [email protected], or call him at 702-361-4572.

STRATEGY GAMES __________________ How can you meet new people, have fun and boost your brain power all at the same time? Join SCA’s newest chartered club, Strategy Games. Members play games that are easy to learn, challenging to play, and that emphasize strategy and minimize luck. Throughout the centuries, people have enjoyed games – from simple ones to pass the time, to more complex ones that use strategy and challenge participants to compete intellectually. Now research has shown that playing strategic games also enhances brain function as we age. Combine that with socialization and we have found the ticket. Most of our games can be learned in about 10 minutes. Club members will teach you not only how to play any game from our large collection, but will also give you hints on strategy. Some of our most popular games include Settler of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Uptown, Carcassonne, Rummikub, Mexican Train, Chess and Canasta. We meet Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. in the Liberty Center multipurpose rooms. If the time is a little early for you, our doors are open until 9:00 p.m. So if you are looking for friendship, camaraderie and a new fun club, drop in and try us out at no charge. Membership is $10 annually if you decide to join. For more information, please contact Cara Greene at [email protected].

TABLE TENNIS_______________________ The Table Tennis Club has reserved times at Independence Center on weekdays from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and weekends from 12:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Residents of all abilities are welcome to join. Table Tennis is a great sport for those who want to improve their hand-eye coordination while having fun. Annual dues of only $5 are used to maintain our equipment and purchase needed items. Please contact [email protected] for a new-members’ guide which will inform you about all of our activities, programs and schedules. If you are not receiving our periodic email announcements, updates and news, contact one of our officers and ask to be added to our email database. Your privacy is assured as all emails are sent out as bcc’s.

TENNIS______________________________ Our SCA Tennis Club will hold its holiday dinner dance on Friday, December 11 at Buckman’s from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Bohol Songbirds Band. Fee for members is $28; non-members/guests are $43. For questions or more information, contact sheila@hughster13@ yahoo.com.

Men and Women 65 and over with a combination team ranking (i.e., the combined ranking of the doubles pair) of 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0. Matches will include three doubles and play will be on weekdays.

To sign up or to get more information, send an email to [email protected]. Having aches and pains in your knees, ankles and feet after you play? Well, court 6 at Liberty Center is going to get a facelift … a new surface. This will be a cushioned surface that will reduce the impact and fatigue on players’ knees, ankles and feet. This special surface is also supposed to be more resilient and more resistant to surface cracking and peeling due to the harsh climate changes and UV effects that we experience in our climate. We will let you know when the date is set and the court is ready for play. Don’t miss your opportunity to serve in the Anthem Coffee Shop. Our club will be the December hosts from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. weekdays. Contact Beverly at beverly. [email protected] for more information or to sign up for a day or more in December. Proceeds from the sale of coffee, soda, water and snacks benefit the Foundation Assisting Seniors as well as our club. All items sold are $1 each. And remember, punch cards are also available for purchase; $5 buys you six punches, so you’re getting one item free. Also, the cards make nice presents to share with friends during the holiday season. See you on the courts.

A gentle reminder to all of our members regarding use of the tennis courts and the guest policy. The Tennis Club has reserved hours and priority on courts 3 through 8 between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Courts 1 and 2 must remain available to other SCA residents, who may or may not be Tennis Club members. All Association members and their guests may use courts 1 and 2 during club time on a first-come basis after following the sign-in procedures. During club reserved times, club members should restrict use of these courts until all club courts are taken. During non-club time, all of the courts are available to any SCA resident in good standing and their guests. Remember that all courts are subject to sign-in procedures and that guest policy requires that Association members accompany their guests, who must be at least 14 years old. For more information on the tennis-court rules or the guest policy, visit http://scatc.homestead.com/. Did you miss our turkey trot fun team tennis event last month? Our men’s, women’s and mixed doubles round robin random play kept everyone engaged. We had refreshments and a light lunch afterwards. If you missed all the fun, by all means don’t miss out on upcoming league play starting in January. The USTA men’s and women’s winter tennis leagues are now forming. Play will commence in January and continue into March. Here are the leagues: •

Men and women 40 and over ranked 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0. Matches will include two singles and three doubles and play will be on Saturdays. December 2015 | Sun City Anthem | 61

Clubs VETERANS___________________________ The mission of the Sun City Anthem Veterans Club is to support all service members, veterans and their families. Veterans Club meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Delaware Room. Meetings are open to all residents and refreshments are served.

Dr. Komanduri was born in India and raised in Chicago from the age of 11. He studied medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine and completed an Honors thesis in psychiatry. Dr. Komanduri has held various clinical and academic appointments. His current academic appointment is Clinical Associate Professor at the UNLV School of Medicine. He is board-certified in psychiatry. ***** We are kicking off the new year with a very distinguished speaker on January 12, FBI special agent Fred Bradford. Since 2002, he has worked in the Las Vegas division assigned to foreign counterintelligence and espionage investigations. He has worked with the FBI since 1999 and was initially assigned white-collar investigations.

The Veterans Day commemoration was an emotional event, drawing a huge crowd with all the pomp and circumstance expected at such a special ceremony. RADM Kathleen Dussault delivered a stirring address to our community of veterans and supporters, paying special homage to those who have gone before us. Unfortunately, it was also poignant as the prior day, Veterans Club president Herb Solomon passed away. Rest in peace, Herb.

Special agent Bradford has been assigned to Ankara, Turkey and other postings in the Middle East from 2008 to 2010. In addition, in 2006 he was embedded with U.S. Special Forces in eastern Afghanistan. He also volunteered in 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom and served throughout the opening months of the war.

Rear Admiral Kathleen Dussault with Bill Campbell and Art Lindberg on Veterans Day, November 11

Our December 8 speaker will be Dr. Ramanduri Komanduri, chief of staff at the VA Southern Nevada Health Care System. Dr. Komanduri will deliver a “state of the VA health care system” message and answer your benefit questions. Please plan to join us for this timely and special meeting. 62 | Sun City Anthem December 2015

Fred served aboard the USS Midway from 1986 to 1990 as a Navy officer, completing three WestPac tours. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and earned an MBA from the University of Queensland in Perth, Australia. Please join us to hear his fascinating story.

***** Veterans, please step forward and be a part of our Freedom Is Not Free interview series filmed every month. To date we have conducted 86 interviews. Visit www.sca-tv. com to witness these veterans’ remarkable stories. Contact show producer Bill Campbell at 702-263-9302 or [email protected] for more information and/or to tell of your service to our country. Tune in to Veterans Corner the first week of every month on SCA-TV Cox channel 980, or watch it at www.sca-tv.com to stay abreast of current club activities. Visit www.scaveterans.com for information about our club as well as to view photos from prior meetings. Remember to pay your 2016 dues. Your dues and donations support causes critical to veterans. You do not have to be a veteran to join our ranks. Please make it a point to join us. Thank you for your support. We serve you.

Clubs WOMEN’S__________________________ Seems like yesterday was just the beginning of 2015, and look where we are now! We have a newly elected board of directors with lots of ideas for new beginnings. It will be another wonderful year for the SCA Women’s Club. Our December 10 buffet luncheon, catered by Superior Events, will be in the Anthem Center ballroom. At this festive event, we will install our new officers and be entertained by club favorite Gail Beckman, who will sing holiday songs for our enjoyment. Friends In The Desert Foundation, Inc., is our December charity. If you bring your check for your 2016 dues, which is still $20, you will be eligible to win one of four $50 bills. The winners will be announced in January. On December 7, the special events committee is hosting an

international cookie exchange at 1:00 p.m. in the Morris/Nelson Room at Independence Center. Bring 2½ dozen cookies and take home two dozen assorted cookies. (We will eat the remaining half-dozen!) Find your mother’s or grandmother’s favorite cookie recipe and share it with friends. All About Me was a huge success, as you can see. We had 51 tables with a variety of vendors, three breakout sessions and a whole lot of fun. A huge thank you to Sandy Shapiro, who led the organization as well as to the rest of the board and the raffles committee members who helped the day of the event. We have had nothing but positive feedback from the attendees and the vendors. _ Save April 15 for our annual spring event. The board is planning something special, so stay tuned for more details. As always, there is much information to be found at www.scawc.org. In addition to the Chatter newsletter, there are photos and general club information. You can also find contact information for club officers.

Clubs WOODCHIPS________________________

Club Interest Do any of these subjects interest you? These groups can become chartered clubs if there is sufficient community interest. Unless otherwise noted, area code 702 precedes the phone numbers listed. If you are interested in forming a club, send a detailed email to [email protected] or call 702-638-5750.

Foremen are the backbone of the Woodchips Woodworking CWouldn’t you like to build new cabinets for your house? Perhaps you thought about adding some cabinets to your kitchen, or putting some in the laundry area, or lining one wall of the garage with shelves and cabinets. Or maybe replacing the vanity in the bathroom. We all have lots of good ideas and then, reality sets in. If we can’t do it ourselves, we’ll have to buy them and/or pay someone else to do the work. But if you’re a Woodchips member, there’s another option. On September 28, Don Schramski conducted a beginners' cabinet seminar for interested members and guests. Don discussed wood requirements, measuring, preparation and anticipated tasks required before actual construction. The model cabinet used for the seminar displayed different types of sides and tops along with various construction methods available. Pocket screws and the use of biscuits (and how they secure the cabinet) were demonstrated. Although this class was a very basic overview, it did demonstrate that even the novice woodworker, after having completed the required clusters to use the equipment, can attempt a simple cabinet. Woodchips membership is open to all SCA residents for $35 a year, After mandatory safety training, new members will be on their way as woodworkers. Woodchips hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays for general membership. The woodshop is located at the rear of Independence Center. Visit www.sca.woodchips.org for information on the club and pictures of our members' projects. Stop by the shop or contact Moira Malone at [email protected].
