FRANK L. BATTISTI Doctor of Music

Frank L. Battisti stands as one of the most widely respected wind band conductors in the world today. A conductor, composer, and music educator, Mr. Battisti founded and conducted the New England Conservatory of Music Wind Ensemble for 30 years from 1969-1999. The conservatory’s Wind Ensemble is recognized as one of the premiere ensembles of its kind in the United States and throughout the world, performing at music conferences, recording for Centaur, Albany, and Golden Crest records, and has had many of its performances broadcast over the National Public Radio Network (NPR). Mr. Battisti is also responsible for commissioning and premiering over 50 works for wind ensemble by distinguished American and foreign composers. He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association and founder of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble. Along with Dr. Francis Marciniak, Director of Bands at Rhode Island College from 1972 to 1996, Mr. Battisti was a founding member of the New England College Band Association, and has maintained a close relationship with the music programs at RIC over the years. He has served on the Standard Award Panel of American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and been a member of the Music Panel for the Arts Recognition and Talent Search for the National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts. For many years he served as editor for various music publishing companies and is currently a consulting editor for The Instrumentalist magazine. What is truly significant about his career as a world-class conductor, educator, and scholar is the ethical and professional groundwork he fashioned over 12 years as an innovative and highly successful public school music teacher early in his career. Standards of personal musicianship and respect for high-quality music permeated his teaching from the beginning, even as the band director in a small town in upstate New York. His life should be viewed as a model for today’s music education graduates.

M. TERESA PAIVA WEED Doctor of Laws

Senator M. Teresa Paiva Weed is the first woman elected as presiding officer of one of the chambers of the Rhode Island General Assembly and one of only six women in the U.S. currently serving as president of a state senate. She holds the highest position ever achieved by a woman in the Rhode Island General Assembly. An attorney, she earned a law degree from Catholic University Law School and a B.A. in political science/public administration from Providence College. Ms. Paiva Weed is a strong supporter and frequent visitor to the college, most recently as a keynote speaker at the ribboncutting ceremony for the Sherlock Center on Disabilities, and has been recognized by the Center for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies, which is based at RIC. She has been honored for her leadership by numerous groups that relate directly to many academic programs at the college, including education, gerontology, justice studies, literacy, management, public administration, public health, social work, and women’s studies as well as groups that advocate for the environment, persons with disabilities, racial and ethnic equality, and veterans—all areas of leadership, active involvement, and interest by RIC faculty, staff, and students. Ms. Paiva Weed’s rise to an unprecedented level of leadership on the state level is a testament to her abilities, her intelligence, and her perseverance. The daughter of a working-class family from Newport, she is a pioneer and role model whose background is similar to that of many members of RIC’s Class of 2010.

JOHN J. PALUMBO SR. Doctor of Public Service

John J. Palumbo Sr. has been President and Publisher of Rhode Island Monthly Communications since 1997. In August 2009, he became sole stockholder of the corporation. A communications specialist with a stellar business career, Mr. Palumbo has contributed to the greater Rhode Island community in countless ways. He has represented the state as an officer in several national professional associations, including Vice President of the International Newspaper Marketing Association, and President of the Newspaper Association of America’s Marketing Development Federation. He also continues his work as an officer in many statewide professional associations. Despite his considerable career responsibilities and professional activities, Mr. Palumbo works tirelessly on behalf of numerous philanthropic organizations. For example, he has served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Rhode Island Zoological Society and as Founding Chairperson of WaterFire Providence. He has also been a board member of First Night Providence, Leadership Rhode Island, Rhode Island Infantile Paralysis Association, and Trinity Repertory Company. In recognition of his service, Roger Williams Park Zoo will soon name their new veterinary hospital after him. Palumbo is also an adjunct professor in RIC’s Communications Department and chairs the college’s School of Management Advisory Board. Over the years, he has provided the college with many thousands of dollars worth of in-kind advertising and promotional support in his magazine, and provided support for RIC’s American Democracy Project. He holds a B.A. in journalism and marketing from the University of Rhode Island, and works with RIC students and alumni in various mentoring capacities. Mr. Palumbo stands as one of the best examples of what it means to be a responsible and compassionate corporate citizen. He is a model for students who want to achieve and prosper, but who also need to understand the value of citizenship and giving back to their community.

GORDON D. FOX Doctor of Laws

Gordon D. Fox, Speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives and a 1985 graduate of Rhode Island College, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Mr. Fox, an attorney, is a nine-term state representative from Providence’s District 4 and served as Chair of the House Finance Committee for two years and as House Majority Leader for four terms prior to his selection as house speaker. He has many significant legislative successes to his credit, among them, an increase in the minimum wage, the Neighborhood Opportunities Program, the ban on smoking in most public places, and a measure to help protect victims of domestic violence. Mr. Fox holds the highest position ever achieved by a minority in the Rhode Island General Assembly. Mr. Fox has assisted his alma mater on numerous occasions, such as his sponsoring a breakfast for alumni legislators. He has hosted Cape Verdean leaders visiting the state as part of the efforts of the RIC-based Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies, and was honored by that group as part of its salute to Lusophone Rhode Island legislators. In recognition of his many accomplishments, he was named to the Alumni Honor Roll for Political Science in 2000. A son of biracial parents, he also reflects the rich diversity that holds great significance to the mission of Rhode Island College. In addition to his degree from RIC, he holds a J.D. from Northeastern University. RIC’s 2010 commencement ceremony marks the 25th anniversary of his graduation from the college.

THE R HODE ISLAND COLLEGE SEAL The official Rhode Island College seal (adopted in 1960) incorporates the anchor, a symbol of hope and of the state of Rhode Island, with the founding of the institution in 1854. The seal was designed by Edith C. Becker, professor emerita of art, who adapted the central flame symbol from the Holbrook Murals in the foyer of Roberts Hall. The flame is used in the murals to depict the energy that has, over the ages, supported the development of all living things and has led civilization to its highest intellectual achievements. In like manner, the flame in the Rhode Island College seal stands for the life of the body and the life of the mind, symbolizing the human and intellectual goals and achievements of Rhode Island College.

THE DEL SESTO M ACE At the 1959 commencement exercises, the first held on the present Mount Pleasant campus, Governor Christopher Del Sesto presented to Rhode Island College a bronze replica of the statue of the Independent Man so that the college, which since 1898 had been located near the State House, might continue its tradition of holding commencements and other academic convocations in the presence of the Independent Man. The Del Sesto Mace, designed by the noted Rhode Island sculptor Aristide Cianfarani and crafted by the Gorham Company, has been in use since 1962 in all academic processions as a symbol of tradition and authority, as well as commitment to the search for truth, knowledge, beauty, values, and learning.

THE WILLARD M EDALLION The Willard Medallion is a symbol of the office of the president and is worn at official and ceremonial functions. The medallion is appended to a presidential chain that bears the names of the chief executive officers who have led Rhode Island College since 1973. The Rhode Island College Alumni Association commissioned silversmith Curtis K. LaFollette, then a professor of art at the college, to design the medallion and chain in commemoration of the inauguration of Charles Borromeo Willard as the first alumnus to be named president of Rhode Island College.

ACADEMIC ATTIRE The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students used them to keep warm in medieval castles and halls of learning. This formal apparel now symbolizes scholarly achievement. Baccalaureate gowns have a long, pleated front with shirring across the shoulders and back. The gowns are primarily distinguished by flowing sleeves, pointed at the fingertip, and may be worn either open or closed. The master’s gown is worn open, and the sleeve is cut so that the forearm comes through a slit just above the elbow. The doctor’s gown has rounded sleeves and velvet panels around the neck and down the front of the gown, as well as three velvet bars on the sleeves. In recent years American universities have followed the custom of European institutions of selecting doctoral gowns in the color of the university. Mortar boards or caps worn with baccalaureate and master’s gowns generally have black tassels. The tassel of the doctoral cap is usually made of gold bullion. The hood gives color and real meaning to the academic costume. Its silk lining bears the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is bordered with velvet of a prescribed width and color to indicate the field of learning to which the degree pertains.

COLLEGE COLORS Rhode Island College’s colors are gold and white, taken from the Rhode Island state flag. In 1986 burgundy was added as an accent color.
