Commencement Address

JOHN CORNYN Saturday, May 13, 2006 9:30 a.m.

John Cornyn, of San Antonio, is a voice for Texas values in Washington. He was sworn in to the U.S. Senate on December 2, 2002, succeeding Phil Gramm. Sen. Cornyn continues to take a leading role on many issues in the Senate. He is committed to bolstering America's national defense and homeland security, working to strengthen the economy and grow jobs, making health care more accessible, and improving educational opportunity for all Texans. After just one year in the Senate, John Cornyn was chosen by leadership to serve as a Deputy Whip. As a member of the Whip team, he helps mobilize votes and support on major issues. Sen. Cornyn serves on five key Senate committees: Armed Services; Judiciary; Budget; Small Business and Entrepreneurship; and the Joint Economic Committee. He chairs the Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship and the Armed Services Committee's subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities. Sen. Cornyn is a prominent supporter of President Bush's judicial nominees, he continues to work for Texas military personnel and veterans, and has been a leader on working to bring about common sense, balanced immigration reform. He stands as a dedicated defender of free markets, traditional values, and individual liberty. In addition to his legislative committees, Sen. Cornyn is the chairman of the Senate India Caucus, vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference Task Force on Hispanic Affairs, vice chairman of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, and a member of the Senate Republican Task Force on Health Care Costs and the Uninsured, the Senate Republican High Tech Task Force, Congressional Oversight Group on Trade, and the President's Export Council. While in the Senate, John Cornyn has received various awards and recognitions, including the 2005 Border Texan of the Year Award; the National Child Support Enforcement Association's Children's Champion Award; the American Farm Bureau Federation's Friend of Farm Bureau Award; the Texas Association of Business's Fighter for Free Enterprise Award; and the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce's (TAMACC) International Leadership Legislative Award; among others. As Texas Attorney General from 1999-2002, John Cornyn directed many initiatives vital to the interests of Texas families. Cornyn served for six years as a District Court Judge in San Antonio before being elected to the Texas Supreme Court in 1990, where he served for seven years. John Cornyn was born in Houston on February 2, 1952, the son of John and Gale Cornyn, both native Texans. His father, a B-17 pilot in World War II, served for thirty-one years in the U.S. Air Force and, later, taught at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. A graduate of Trinity University and St. Mary's School of Law, both in San Antonio, John Cornyn also earned a Masters of Law from the University of Virginia Law School in 1995. He was named the St. Mary's Distinguished Law School Graduate in 1994 and a Trinity University Distinguished Alumnus in 2001. Sen. Cornyn is married to Sandy, his wife of 26 years. They have two daughters.

COMMENCEMENT REGALIA The gowns, caps, and hoods worn at university functions date back to the early days of the oldest universities in the Middle Ages. Monks and students wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty twelfth century halls of learning. This traditional academic dress has been gradually revised to the modern form you see today. All gowns have a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed, reaches between 8 and 10 inches from the floor, and has long sleeves from which the arms exit at the wrist. The master’s gown may be worn open or closed and has long pointed sleeves closed at the end, the forearm coming through a slit near the elbow, with the flowing sleeve extending down the thigh. The doctor’s gown may also be worn either open or closed but is distinguished by broad velvet panels down the front and by three velvet bars on the full bell-shaped sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field of learning. The black cap with maroon and gold tassel is worn by holders of a bachelor’s and master’s degree; the black velvet tam with gold tassel is worn by holders of a doctoral degree. The hood (usually not worn by holders of the bachelor’s degree) is a black shell, silk-lined in the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The colors of Texas State University-San Marcos are shown by a maroon lining crossed with a gold chevron. The velvet border of the hood is the color signifying the field of learning in which the degree was earned and not in the department in which the major was done. Thus, a degree conferred as master of education with a major in physical education requires the light blue of education rather than the sage of physical education. Similarly, the “doctor of philosophy” degree requires the royal of philosophy, not the color of the department in which the major of study was done. The universities represented by colors lining the hoods worn by our faculty are numerous; two examples are Baylor’s dark green and gold, and Texas A&M’s maroon and white. Please feel free to ask individual faculty members which institutions their colors represent.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE The use of a mace during university graduation ceremonies combines symbolic communication with the principle of vested authority at the most traditional and sacred of academic celebrations. The mace emphasizes the principle for which institutions of higher learning stand. It is a visible symbol of both the specific history of the institution as well as the more universal commitment of high quality in education, and the search for truth and beauty through the interaction of many academic disciplines. The mace bearer leads the faculty procession during a formal graduation ceremony. The mace, as a symbol of authority, adds meaning and dignity to the commencement ritual. Throughout the ceremony it reminds participants and spectators that education is one of the single most important aspects of freedom and democratic government.

THE TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY-SAN MARCOS MACE The top of a mace is usually adorned with a symbol that is particularly significant to its university. It is appropriate that the Indian Blanket should be the symbol on top of the Texas State mace. The Indian Blanket, a native Texas wildflower technically known as the Gaillardia pulchella, holds a special significance for our university, since the school colors were selected from it. The mace flower was hand carved from four types of wood: osage orange, mesquite, pecan, and dark walnut, which are all native to the state of Texas. The top of the mace is solid pecan with inlaid bronze investment castings. Divided into eight sections, the sphere represents all of the colleges at Texas State. Each section features silicon bronze investment cast carvings that exemplify the academic interests of the departments making up each college. The spherical shape of the mace head is intended to convey a message about the international nature of the university and the interactive nature of academic interests that exist among the colleges. Since the strength of a sphere is well documented in the study of solid geometry, strength should be clearly associated with the interactive nature of each college represented. Comprising the main body of the mace, the stem is turned and hand carved from native Texas pecan. The wide area of contact between the stem and the sphere emphasizes the support for higher education provided by the state of Texas. Hand carved shapes of the state of Texas, in the upper portion of the stem, reinforce the concept of support. The stand features a piece of Texas pink granite that was part of the cornerstone material from our library. The wood support on the base is native Texas mesquite that combines the beauty of both sap and heartwood. The mace was designed and built by the Department of Engineering and Technology in 1990.
