Get Involved!

The Fly Fishing Club is an opportunity for students to be introduced to beginner fly fishing techniques. We will also be spending a good portion of the winter sessions tying flies that we will then use to fish with in the Spring. The Paw Print, our school newspaper, is published seasonally. The Paw Print members are sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who take this opportunity to learn and practice the various aspects of newspaper publishing. Students participate in various workshops about research, writing, interviewing, editing, and publishing. Do you like card games? Do you want to learn some new card games to play with your friends? If so, this is the club to join. Ms. McGarry and Ms. Murphy will teach you a variety of different games to play and then you’ll have a chance to hone your skills with friends.

Join your friends in the gym for a game of badminton. Improve your skills and have some afterschool fun. BAND ACTIVITIES Mr. Pearlberg, Director The core group for the band program is for all students who play flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. The bands are grouped by grade level and meet for rehearsal 7:15 am – 8:00 am on designated days. Group instrument lessons are given on a rotating pull-out schedule. Band is a year long commitment that runs from September through the end of May. Students in band work on a variety of music styles that develop their ability, skill, and appreciation of music. The band performs at two major programs during the year; Winter Fine and Applied Arts Night, and the Spring Fine and Applied Arts Night. Throughout the year, there are opportunities for band students to perform at additional music events. Jazz Band and other small band ensembles are an outgrowth of the concert bands. Membership into these groups is based upon audition and/or director appointment. These ensembles usually rehearse after school in the evening. BOOK CLUB Ms. Gillespie

The stepping is a form of percussive dance in which the participant's entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. Stepping may also draw from elements of gymnastics, break dance, tap dance, march, or African and Caribbean dance, or include semi-dangerous stunts as a part of individual routines. Activities Program 2015-2016

The activities program supports Strath Haven Middle School’s dedication to fostering intellectual curiosity, honoring individuality, promoting cooperation, and enhancing self-esteem. Clubs, councils, and special events offer students opportunities beyond the classroom to think critically, make responsible decisions, and become alive to new ideas, concepts and skills. Service activities involve students in the larger community outside SHMS, encouraging the development of empathy and responsibility. Activities promote an atmosphere of intimacy and connectedness, an atmosphere that reflects our commitment to student self-discovery and sense of belonging. Most clubs meet regularly from 2:35 – 3:05 throughout the school year. They vary according to student interests. Other activity groups meet seasonally or as needed. We encourage all children to participate in our variety of co-curricular programs. Students who are interested in starting new clubs should contact Ms. Skowronski (C115) or Mrs. Kutufaris (C120).
