Sequoya Clubs 2014-2015 6th Grade Art Club Advisor: Mrs. Michta

6th grade students will be able to do art beyond the classroom! This club will allow students to improve and practice basic studio skills taught in 6th grade studio art. The 7th and 8th Art Club gives any 7th or 8th grade student the opportunity to expand their art experience. They will learn new techniques and expand creativity through different projects that are not offered during the regular curriculum. Chef’s Club Advisor: Ms. Berton/Mrs. Barnes Students in grades 6 through 8 will be provided with an opportunity to enjoy basic cooking. They will be making delicious recipes that include the use of math, nutrition, organization and science skills. Recipes will be compiled into a pamphlet for future enjoyment. Meetings will be on Mondays. Computer Skills Club Advisor: Mrs. Bucher The Computer Club will help students to learn some of the ins and outs of computer processing basics in Word and PowerPoint, creating folders and organizing documents to working with interactive Web 2.0 sites such as Voki, Wordle, Thinglink, Weebly, Animoto and Glogster. Some of the projects may be related to books you have read or movies you have seen. Courtyard Club Advisor: Mr. Harney The Courtyard Club allows students to take pride in their school and community. It also allows them to see how hard work pays off and in this case how their hard work makes a difference to all in the school setting. Our focus this year will be in the area around the library and the area near the new fitness center. These two areas need a lot of work which the students of Sequoya will be able to provide. It is my hope with the addition of the fitness center to make this area as beautiful as possible

Drama Club Advisor: Mrs. Michta Co-Advisor: Mr. Carey The Drama Club will rehearse and perform 1 drama production during the school year. Environmental Action Club Advisors: Mrs. Hughes/Mrs. O’Boyle/Ms. Lettieri The Environmental Action Club is designed to further the member’s awareness of environmental issues, educate the school community about environmental issues, create an ecologically responsible school community and improve the natural surroundings of the school. Jazz Band Advisor: Dr. Benson The Jazz Band will instruct the students in a different musical style and prepare them to perform in a concert in April 2015. Literary Magazine Club Advisor: Mrs. Oliver The Literary Magazine will create an opportunity to showcase student writing and artwork at Sequoya. The Magazine will be enjoyed by students, parents, teachers and administrators. The club will attract students with writing, reading and artistic inclinations. Students will write poems and short stories as well as illustrate them for publication in the Magazine in May. Students will also select quality literature from works submitted by Sequoya teachers. Club members will be involved in all aspects of publication. Some of the skills we will practice are: preparing rough drafts; editing; selecting written works to be published; organization; and illustration. Movie and Film Appreciation Club Advisor: Mr. Intravia Students of all ages will meet to hear an introduction to each movie, enjoy popcorn and drinks while they watch, and afterwards discuss the plots, themes, symbolism, and pure entertainment value of a wide array of films; ranging from classic Charlie Chaplin silent comedies through action-packed special effects blockbusters like “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. Focus will be on historically important films dealing with “big issues” like war, death, and life, with an emphasis on movies that today’s youth may have missed, but will be surprised to find they can fully enjoy- like “Jaws” and “Star Wars” (THE ORIGINALS only!!!). Students’ parents will need to sign permission slips allowing viewing and discussion of movies rated PG-13 and under.

Renaissance Academic Club Advisor: Mrs. Schaefer The Renaissance Program’s goal is to provide an environment that promotes social, physical and emotional growth in our school and community while stressing academic excellence to show our students who they are and who they can be. Renaissance Community Service Club Advisor: Mrs. Schaefer The Renaissance Community Service Club will teach students to become more respectful and responsible towards each other and to society as a whole. To work on various community service projects within the district. Select Chorus Advisor: Mrs. Zayas Select Chorus is a Chorus made up of students in grades 6-8, who are chosen by audition to study and perform music from the American Songbook, Broadway, Pop, and Jazz. The Chorus performs in April on the Ensemble Concert program, which also features the Jazz Band and Select Orchestra. It has approximately 50 members, and meets on Wednesdays during 9th period (2:30-3:20), several times a month.

Select Orchestra Advisor: Mr. Jaklitsch Select Orchestra would be an orchestra of select students chosen by audition. Auditions would be open for all orchestra students in grades 6-8. We would play more challenging music meant for a small chamber string ensemble. Rehearsals would occur bi-weekly, either after school or in the evening, as the students’ schedules allow. Student Government Advisors: Mrs. Rossi/Mr. Webb 1. Planning/organizing student events, dances, trips, etc. 2. Fund-raising for community and student body benefit. 3. Food drive, toy drive.

Weight Training/Workout Club Advisor: Mr. Trudnak The Weight Training/Workout Club will teach students proper weight training; introduce students to weight training and safety during workouts; train students on the treadmill and stationary bikes and cardio training. Yearbook Club Advisors: Ms. Bongiorno/Mrs. Hughes To produce Sequoya’s Middle School Yearbook. Lego League Advisor: Mrs. Miller The Lego League introduces Middle School students to real-world engineering challenges by designing, building, testing and program robots; using LEGO MIINDSTORMS® technology. Students will learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills and will participate in both tournaments and celebrations. Math Team Advisor: Mrs. DiGiacinto Math Team is open to 6th, 7th and 8th, grade students who want to take Mathematics to the next level. Students use problem solving skills to solve challenging problems and compete against other middle schools in Suffolk County. Photography Club Advisor: Mrs. Michta Students with any sort of digital camera 5 mp or higher can learn the basics of Professional Artistic Photography. Students will learn how the Elements and Principals of Art pertain to the artistic form of photography. Each meeting, students will learn a new photography technique, print out their images that were taken since the last meeting and how to participate in a class critique. Cause for Paws Club Advisor: Ms. Fallon Sequoya’s Cause for Paws club will enable students to become involved in local animal rescues and shelters within their community. They will help fundraise and collect items necessary to support animals in need. This experience will expose students to possible volunteer opportunities as well as potential future job interests.

Craft Club Advisor: Ms. Higbie Craft Club is a new club at Sequoya this year. It is open to all 6-8 graders and will meet on Mondays throughout the school year. Craft Club will allow your creative side to emerge. We will be working on various crafts such as scrapbooking, origami, paper crafting and design. You do not need to be creative to join craft club. Everyone is welcome. Come socialize and have fun! Cheer Club Advisor: Ms. Pickford The cheer club will focus on the foundations of cheerleading, which include motions and cheers, jumps, tumbling, stunting, as well as overall fitness and conditioning. The purpose of this club will be to prepare the students for tryouts the following year. Walking and Fitness Club Advisor: Mrs. McCabe It will be great to get those students not involved in sports into some physical activity making it fun!!! I would set up different activities along the way to make walking & fitness fun, teaching about health & nutrition each month. This would be a great way to follow with the National Program of getting kids moving!!! Leader in Me Club Advisors: Mrs. Bucher/Mrs. Oliver The Leader in Me is a club dedicated to developing leadership and character, utilizing the principles of Covey’s 7 Habits. Students will engage in projects and activities to help share the 7 Habits strategies with the community.
