Principal, J. Dominic Bejarano
Principal’s Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome each new and returning family to Henry T. Gunderson High School. Our continued goal for Henry T. Gunderson is to be one of the top schools in the San Jose Unified School District and in Santa Clara County. We have made tremendous strides toward achieving this goal. We have increased our graduation rate to 90%, our UC/CSU eligibility rate by 20%, and the number of students receiving academic recognition from 300 students to over 500 students (approximately 43% of our student body). We have high expectations for our entire school community, especially for our students. We feel strongly that our job is not only to provide them with the skills to be successful in college, but also to provide them with the 21st Century skills needed to be successful in today’s work environment. It is important that our students have critical and creative thinking skills, collaboration skills, effective communication skills, and have an appreciation for different cultures and societies. Our technology focus at Henry T. Gunderson provides our students with an enjoyable way to develop the skills mentioned above and digital literacy for the 21st century. Gunderson is a unique school with an outstanding, diverse student body and a dedicated staff. Along with the continued momentum from last year, it is also our goal to sustain a dialogue with all stakeholders to meet the needs of our students, and provide a welcoming, safe, and caring atmosphere for students, staff, and parents. To help with questions, this packet contains information regarding various programs and services at Gunderson High School. I advise you to take some time to read through these materials, so as not to miss important details or deadlines. I hope you have a restful and relaxing summer as we prepare for a great 2015-2016 school year. J. Dominic Bejarano Gunderson High School Administrative Team Mr. J. Dominic Bejarano, Principal Ms. Kelli Knapp, Assistant Principal of Instruction Mr. Jake Sarasohn, Assistant Principal of Discipline Mr. Mark Camilleri, Assistant Principal –Integration, Motivation, & Attendance Grizzly PRIDE Our Grizzly PRIDE (Personal Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence) are the expectations we expect our entire community to uphold (see Grizzly PRIDE information). These expectations will be upheld at ALL our school events, on and off campus, and through all communications. Following these expectations has developed a positive school culture for our students, staff, parents, and community. We will continue to work on improving our overall school culture for our entire school community. We appreciate your support with our continued growth in this area. School Bell Schedule We will continue with our block bell schedule this year which is based on an 8-period master schedule. Students will attend 4 classes a day. On Brown Day, students will attend periods 1, 3, 5, and 7, and on Gold Gunderson High School 622 Gaundabert Lane San Jose, CA 95136 (408)535-6340 FAX (408)224-2209
Day students will attend periods 2, 4, 6, and 8. Each student will be assigned to a Grizzly Learning Center (GLC) period each day where they will have the opportunity to complete or receive help with their schoolwork. Our learning centers will cover all subject areas each period. Our faculty will be in the learning centers to provide tutoring, assist students with their homework, or help them study for exams. Our goal is to meet our students’ needs by providing them with support during the school day rather than after school. We understand our students have obligations after school and want to make sure they can receive the services they need to be successful (see Bell Schedule). 9th Grade 4-Year Planning Meeting We will be holding hour-long meetings to develop a 4-year plan for all incoming 9th grade students. These meetings are to focus our students on their goal to graduate and prepare for college. The meetings will be with the student, parent, an administrator or academic counselor. The meetings will be held on Wednesday, July 29th from 8am-12pm and 3pm-7pm. You will need to call our office at 408-535-6340 to schedule your meeting. Class Schedule Distribution All students are encouraged to pick up their class schedule prior to the first day of school (dates and times are listed below). In addition to picking up class schedules, students will be able to take pictures for student body cards, purchase PE uniforms (required for all PE classes) and ASB stickers, clear debts, receive student locker assignments, check out textbooks, and purchase new “Grizzly Wear” items (i.e. sweatshirts, shirts, hats etc). Free and Reduced Lunch Applications You will be able to fill out the Free and Reduce Lunch Application online after July 1, 2015. It is important for your student to eat breakfast and lunch. We thank you in advance for your support. School Site Council The School Site Council is an important committee composed of the Principal, teachers, students and parents/guardians that is responsible for the development of the School Plan and budget oversight. The School Plan establishes common agreements about educational strategies that will be implemented to support the highest possible levels of teaching and learning at our school. For the 2015-2016 school year, we will be looking for parents/guardians and students who are interested in serving on this committee. The term of office for a School Site Council representative is two years. The committee meets on the second Monday of each month, beginning at 3:00 p.m. If you are interested in participating, please complete the enclosed SSC Parent Form and return it to Gunderson. Elections will take place at PRIDE Night, August 27, 2015. Gunderson High School 622 Gaundabert Lane San Jose, CA 95136 (408)535-6340 FAX (408)224-2209
Grizzly PRIDE Gunderson High School is the only high school in the San Jose Unified School District to be implementing the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) system. Through the PBIS process, Grizzly PRIDE (P – Personal Responsibility, R – Respect, I – Integrity, D – Diversity, E – Excellence) was created and are the expectations for all students, staff and community members. We are entering our 6th year of Grizzly PRIDE and it has become the standard for all on-site decision making processes and policies. Grizzly PRIDE continues to contribute to the success and growth of Gunderson. Gunderson High School’s daily average office behavior referrals are consistently below the national percentile rate of 25% and over the past 4 years, at least 94% of our students earned 0 to 1 referrals for each entire academic year, with the majority of that percentage earning 0. Based on the success of Grizzly PRIDE, Gunderson High School was designated a Model PBIS High School for Northern California by the Santa Clara County Office of Education in the Fall of 2013 and presented at the Northern California PBIS Symposium. Gunderson has also hosted visitors from high schools throughout California who want to implement a PBIS system at their site. One of the characteristics of Grizzly PRIDE is to recognize students for displaying expected behavior. When doing so, students are rewarded by staff with PAW dollars which have that staff member’s photo on it. Students can use PAW dollars to purchase a variety of items ranging from food to Gunderson apparel. This year, Gunderson students turned in over 4,500 PAW dollars which is the most turned in so far. Our Grizzly PRIDE members include teachers, students, parents, a campus supervisor, a dedicated PBIS coach, and an adminstrator. If you are interested in working with the Grizzly PRIDE team, please do not hesitate to contact us. We always welcome new members. We are very proud of the hard work dedicated to continuing our Grizzly PRIDE ideology, and we are excited to continue moving forward this academic school year.

Welcome to the Gunderson PTSA! Three decades of research proves that students achieve higher grades, have better attendance and more consistently complete homework when parents are involved! We know that students learn more and have better lives when everyone in the school community works together to share thoughts and information and work on programs that benefit the students. Last year some of these programs included: • Graduating high school senior scholarships • Teacher grants to support classroom projects and/or provide needed supplies • Supporting school events such as: Welcome back dinner for staff, Homecoming, Academic & Senior Honors Night, Teacher Appreciation Week, Spring Fling and dances. For the 2015/2016 school year, with your help, PTSA will engage in the following programs: • Reflections – Art in Education Program • Senior Scholarships • Family –School Partnership Programs • Increase teacher and student PTSA participation through the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Class Reps, ASB and Leadership • Help fund the replacement of the sound system in the gym • Help plan a fund raising event of 2015/2016 • Support additional school events such as College Week By becoming a member of Gunderson PTSA, you and your child can become an important part of helping to ensure that these plans become a reality! MORE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN PTSA: • You show your children that school matters, and that you are invested in their success. • You demonstrate to your child that success in school is the pathway to college, a career, and a productive life. • You partner with the principal, teachers, and staff to make the campus safe, welcoming, a hub of learning and a fun place to be.
• • •
•
You share in campus events and experiences that make your child’s school days more memorable. You connect with other parents, become part of the school community, and support every child with one voice. You proudly affiliate with the California State and National PTA, the oldest, largest, and most powerful children’s advocacy organization in the country. You join with other parents to discuss key issues and concerns of importance to your school and community.
As a member of the Gunderson High School PTSA, you are eligible to enjoy discounts at places like LEGOLAND and the California Academy of Sciences! Go to www.capta.org and view your PERKS as a PTSA member!
You can make a difference in the education, health, and welfare of our students. 2015 /2016 Gunderson High School Athletic Booster Club
June 18, 2015 Dear Gunderson High School Family, My name is Reginald Futch and I am the Gunderson High School Athletic Booster Club (GHS ABC) President. The purpose of the GHS ABC is to support the Grizzly Athletic Program so that a well-balanced and diverse program exists for all of our student athletes. Our main goals for this upcoming school year are to further our fundraising efforts and increase our parent and GHS staff participation. As a parent of a GHS student athlete, I am personally asking every GHS student athlete and their family to assist in these endeavors. In order to achieve these annual goals, the GHS ABC needs the support of all of our parents, staff, alumni, and friends of Gunderson High School. This comes by way of joining the Booster Club and becoming personally involved in the activities sponsored by the Club.
Here are several ways that your support furthers Gunderson High School Athletics: •
A healthy / vibrant athletic program, complete with adult involvement, will support Grizzly PRIDE and contribute to an increasingly improved on campus atmosphere.
•
Your GHS student athlete’s team is eligible to receive funding from the Athletic Booster Club and deserves/needs your ongoing support. All funds raised directly support the athletic programs and decreases any out-of-pocket cost to families. During the 2014/2015 school year the GHS ABC provided $14,500 of funding to various athletic programs. Ask your student’s coach how you can personally help make this happen.
•
As a Booster Club member, you receive free admission to all regular season home football, volleyball, basketball, and wrestling events; not including CCS playoff games.
In closing, there will be future events to learn more about the GHS Athletic Booster Club as well as many volunteer opportunities, so stay tuned. GO GRIZZLIES! Sincerely, Reginald Futch (E)

Top 10 Things You Need To Know About Playing Sports At Gunderson 1. All students must have a parent or guardian register their student for a sport at www.registermyathlete.com before they may tryout, practice, or condition with any sports team. 2. All students must have completed athletic physical forms (page 6-7 in athletic packet and available on website or in front office) uploaded onto www.registermyathlete.com or turned in to the athletic director before they are eligible to begin participating in sports. Physicals are good for 1 calendar year - and are offered on campus before each sport season for a small fee. 3. Fall sports offered at Gunderson are Football, Cross Country, Girls Tennis, Girls Volleyball, Girls Golf & Boys/Girls Water Polo. These sports begin working out over the summer so make sure to contact the coach or the athletic director for details. 4. At Gunderson, grades are more important that sports. You must maintain a 2.0 (think 3.0) GPA for each of the 6 week grading periods to be eligible to play in any games/matches/meets. 5. At Gunderson, Attendance in class and being on time is more important than sports. If you are tardy 5 times to one class, you will be given A.I.M. (2 consecutive Friday schools) and will be ineligible to compete in any games/ matches/meets until you complete them. 6. Playing a sport will earn you 1 semester of PE credit! Every student at Gunderson must earn 4 semesters (2 years) of PE credit.
Contact the Athletic Director

7. Winter sports offered at Gunderson are Boys & Girls Soccer, Boys & Girls Basketball, and Wrestling. Spring sports include Baseball, Softball, Track & Field, Boys Volleyball, Boys Golf, Swimming, and Badminton. Note: Sports teams often do strength training and conditioning in the months leading up to their season – make sure you are registered (as mentioned in #1) and have our district approved physical forms submitted (as mentioned in #2) so that you may participate in any pre-season activities. 8. Mandatory Parent/Student Sports Meeting will take place this year on Wednesday August 26th at 6pm in the gym. This meeting is for all students and their parents who wish to play a sport at Gunderson. 9. If you are a sophomore, junior, or senior and did not attend Gunderson last year, you must contact the athletic director immediately to fill out transfer paperwork. Until this paperwork is approved, you cannot participate in any games/matches/meets. 10. Mr. Bejarano, Gunderson Principal, played a small role in the 1994 film, “Angels In The Outfield”. Mr. Bejarano is actually a talented baseball player and plays in all of the student vs. staff games we have throughout the school year.
Instructions For Parents Register My Athlete allows parents to register their athletes for sports online. Here are some basic steps to follow when registering your athlete for the first time: 1. Find Your School: Find your school by going to http://registermyathlete.com/schools/, selecting your state, and finding your school. Click on the school to continue to the next step. Schools are encouraged to make a direct link from their school's website. 2. Create an account: Now begin creating your account by clicking the “Create An Account” button. After filling in the required information the system will automatically log you in and you will be required to accept the terms of use. 3. Add a new athlete: The next step is to add an athlete. You can do so by clicking the “My Athletes” tab on the left-hand side of the page or by clicking “Add Athlete” underneath the “My Athletes” tab. This only needs to be done once during your athlete's entire career at a school. The information entered here will carry over from year to year. This information includes your athlete's contact information and medical information. 4. The athlete's profile: After you've created your athlete you will be brought to their Profile page. This page is a summary of their info and involvement. 5. Register for a sport: Click “+ Register For A Sport” to begin registration, you will be asked to choose which sport your athlete is registering for. 6. Your registration checklist: This page shows the status of your athlete's registration. You will be asked to complete several steps to complete registration including agreeing to documents, and completing the physical. 7. Physicals: Physical documents should be completed by the parents (or medical professionals as needed). Parents have the ability to upload these physical documents to the system. Uploaded documents will need to be verified by the admin at the school prior to be accepted as complete. (If a document upload is rejected for any reason, the parent will receive an email with the rejection reason. After the error has been corrected, parents will be able to reupload the document for verification.) 8. Complete registration: Your registration is complete once all items on the checklist have been completed. 9. After registration: After registration is complete, you can login at any time to view the Status of your athlete and their participation on the team. Additional Athletes Under the same account, repeat steps 3-9 to register additional athletes. Future Seasons & Years Once your athlete has been added to your account, you only need to follow steps 5-8 to register them for another sport.
