4. Other special activities - to promote cancer awareness and services

of CACACA in Chinese communities and churches One of CACACA’s goals is to expand the caring services to cancer patients across the UK. We often deliver cancer/health talks to organisations in the Chinese community, and also to Chinese Christian churches in different regions including Brighton, Belfast, Canterbury, Doncaster, London (Colindale, Haringey, East London and Central London, Kingston ), Liverpool, Reading, Woking (see section 8 for the summary of CACACA activities). We aim to arouse awareness of caring and supporting cancer patients, as well as to call on people across the UK to establish regional cancer support groups. A branch of CACACA in the region of Liverpool was established in February 2015.

Annual Report 2014/15

5. Training opportunities To equip CACACA members and volunteers with the relevant knowledge and skills to effectively help and support cancer patients and their families, we constantly organise training workshops. We also encourage our workers to attend training events provided by cancer care organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Cancer Research, NHS and CancerLink Hong Kong. A remarkable example is one that took place in May 2014, where three Council members of CACACA attended a ‘Cancer Activist Training’ course on ‘Cancer Prevention’. After such event, CACACA was authorised by Cancer Research UK to deliver talks using their materials. The trainings that CACACA offers for volunteers are not limited to the London city only but also to other regions across the UK.

Annual Report 2014/15

6. Strategic development & publicity For CACACA to benefit from a strategic development, our Chief Executive and Council members regularly attend meetings and conferences run by the NHS, the London Clinical Senate Forum for example, a local hospital’s ‘Patient and Public Voice’ programme, and with regional Healthwatch organisations. By doing so, we aim to acquire the latest information on cancer care and to express the needs and concerns of cancer patients especially those with a Chinese background. The Chief Executive has also been equipping himself with skills in project team leadership and project management by attending various training courses. On the other hand, CACACA is devoted in drawing collaboration, and is seeking support from well-established general/cancer support organisations. To name a few, Maggie’s Centre, Macmillan Cancer Support, Cancer Research UK, BME Health Forum, Westminster Action for Voluntary Engagement, National Chinese Healthy Living Centre, Chinese Information and Advice Centre etc. We greatly value the partnership and the benefit gained from the experience and the resource shared by such organisations. In order to arouse awareness of caring and supporting for cancer patients among the Chinese community in the UK, we have set up the CACACA website and Facebook page: ● ●

http://CACACA.org.uk/ (Website) https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chinese-Association-for-CancerCare/412551642193589 (Facebook page)

The cancer care works of CACACA has raised interests of local media. In 2014, CACACA was interviewed by TVB-Europe, a Chinese TV channel in the UK. Articles have been published in Herald UK and other local UK newspaper.

7. Support to individual cancer patients and families In addition to organising regular support group meetings for cancer patients and their family, CACACA is devoted to provide practical help to individual patients in need: ● ● ● ● ● ●

CACACA has been actively providing services to more than twenty patients including those from cities other than London. CACACA helped with four memorial services for patients we served. To assist/advise cancer patients to apply for housing, utility, clothing, vacation, travelling benefits To support patients by regular visits and building friendship To provide interpretation service and help patients with recording personal medical history To refer patients to relevant cancer support units or organisations for complementary treatments
