Settling children in

1. Issues and Challenges ● settling in ● key person ● preparation for school ● routines ● adult-directed and child-led play ● snack time ● providing for babies ● play for toddlers ● boys!

Children are not parcels that can be dropped off at some depot and then be retrieved later. From very early on in their lives, children know who should be looking after them and will react badly when there are changes. Unhappy children cannot learn and so thinking about how best to help children settle in has to be a priority for all of us. One of the best things about the EYFS is that for the first time all settings had to establish a key person system. The idea behind the key person system is quite simple. One adult will get to know a child and their family so that when the time comes for the child to be separated, the child does not become distressed. The child’s key person is effectively taking over from the parent and will be the child’s safe base whilst the parent is absent.

Settling children in is a process which, unless there is an emergency needs to be done gradually. The first step is to help parents gain trust and confidence in you. Parents need to feel that you will be able to take good care of their child. One way of doing this is to provide parents with some information about you. Whilst professional information such as how many years you have worked with children is fine, parents often respond more to the more personal approach. The inset box below outlines one way in which you might do this.

Stage 3 In and out of sight

Stage 4 Goodbye and back again

Stage 5 Separation for a short time

1.1 Child Development

Family circumstances There are some family circumstances that might make it harder for children and their parents to separate. Finding out as much about the child and their family as possible requires skilful listening and sensitive questions. Some parents find it easier to talk about things when there is a form to go through whilst others can find this daunting.

1.1.Child Development ‘Babies and children develop in individual ways and at varying rates. Every area of development – physical, cognitive, linguistic, spiritual, social and emotional- is equally important.’

Changes to family routine Children are not as adaptable as adults think they are. Listen out for any changes to the usual routine for the child such as having a parent who has started working nights or a recent change of address.

Communication, Language and Literacy

Writing

Paint brushes and water

16–26 months

This is a wonderful outdoor activity that will engage toddlers. Put out a bucket of water, a range of paint brushes and some aprons. Put on an apron, take a brush and dip it in the water then make marks on the ground, fence or even a window. Doing the activity yourself is essential as toddlers tend to copy the movements and actions of adults. You can also make the water soapy. As with all activities involving toddlers, you may find that they may choose to dip their hands in the water instead of using the brushes – this is fine, but try repeating the activity another time.

Observation

What do I need to do? Provide plenty of opportunities for toddlers to make marks in a variety of ways.

Frequently Asked Questions Should we be showing toddlers how to write?

Provide positive feedback about the marks that are being made.

While you can encourage toddlers’ interest in the process of writing by talking as you write and draw, it is too early for toddlers to be formally taught to write. They are at an earlier stage when they need to explore how to make marks and enjoy making them.

Act as a role model – draw and paint alongside toddlers. Talk about the marks that are being made. Observe the materials that seem to attract toddlers.

Does it matter that toddlers do not know what they are writing?

Make sure that the focus is on mark-making rather than on ‘writing’.

No, at this stage it is the process of trying to write and communicate that is important. You may find that some toddlers will be more interested than others in this process.

Explain to parents the importance of early markmaking.

What types of marks should toddlers be making?

“One of my childminders recently received an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted grade after grasping what was needed to evidence EYFS through reading Penny’s book. It can’t be a coincidence that those of us in my group who have read the book had all been graded ‘Outstanding’.”

126

Try pinning up some paper and putting out some paint and brushes.

Does the toddler try and copy your marks?

Try making circular marks that begin at the top and are anti-clockwise.

Cornflour and water gloop

22–36 months

Combining cornflour and water produces a fascinating mixture. Put out a thin layer of gloop onto a baking sheet, plastic tray or other flat surface. In addition, put out some brushes or other tools that will help children make a mark, such as spoons or sticks. Model how you can make marks in the gloop with your finger or a stick. You might like to have your own tray and continue modelling in this way, as you may find that toddlers will copy some of your actions. (As this activity will often be popular, you will need to provide several trays so that each child can explore mark-making without any squabbles!)

Observation

Planning

What marks does the toddler try to make?

Provide other materials that will help toddlers to enjoy making marks. This might include paint or pastels.

Take video clips or photographs of the child.

Encourage parents to provide similar opportunities at home.

Many toddlers will be interested in making lines and circular shapes, although their main focus will be exploring the feel of the mark-making materials that have been provided.

22-36 months

Frequently Asked Questions: practical advice before you start.

Planning

How does the toddler respond to this activity?

16-26 months

As with any water activity, it is essential to supervise the children at all times.

SUPPORTING TEACHING AND LEARNING IN SCHOOLS Key Term features help to aid understanding of important concepts. Level 2 Certificate Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools

TDA 2.2 Safeguarding the welfare of children & young people

Know about the legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people including e-safety Key term Safeguarding – this term has replaced the term child protection. It includes promoting children’s safety and welfare as well as protecting children when abuse happens

The concept of safeguarding, which works to protect children, has only been developed in the last 50 years. The need for improved legislation has been highlighted by high-profile cases, such as the death of Maria Colwell in 1973 and, more recently, Victoria Climbié in 2000. These cases shocked the nation and showed weaknesses in procedures.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) This treaty sets out the rights and freedoms of all children in a set of 54 articles. Included in those rights are those which ensure that children are safe and looked aer. Article 19 states children’s rights to be ‘protected from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation including sexual abuse by those looking aer them’. Those countries which signed up to the Treaty, including the UK in 1991, are legally bound to implement legislation which supports each of the articles.

Identify the current legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people including e-safety

Reflect Following the death of Victoria Climbié in February 2000, an inquiry was set up into what had gone wrong. Lord Laming, who led the inquiry, reported that there was a failure in the system. He said that the services responsible for the protection of children had not been working together. His recommendations were included in the Children Act 2004. Identify the different services which may work closely with schools to safeguard children.

In need – children who are unlikely to maintain, or be given the opportunity to maintain, a reasonable standard of health or development, or whose health could be impaired without the support of local authority services. It also includes children with disabilities

www.pearsonfe.co.uk/atwork

Policies which safeguard Schools must develop a range of policies which ensure the safety, security and well-being of their pupils. These will set out the responsibilities of staff and the procedures that they must follow. Policies may be separate or incorporated into one health and safety policy, but they must include sections which cover the following issues of: ● safeguarding and protecting, and procedures for reporting ● e-safety ● bullying, including cyber-bullying (see page 00). The Department for Education (DfE) provides guidance for local authorities including schools. Schools use this guidance to develop their own policy and procedures which must be followed. Two of these are listed below.

What to do if you’re worried that a child is being abused (2006) This is guidance to help those working with children safeguard and promote their welfare. It also looks at the actions which all adults working with children should take if they are concerned.

Portfolio activity

Section 47 states that the Local Authority has ‘a duty to investigate when there is a reasonable cause to suspect that a child is suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm’. Section 17 states that services must be put into place to ‘safeguard and promote the welfare of children within the area who are in need’.

● earlier support for parents who are experiencing problems.

This is guidance which sets out the duties of organisations and how they must work together to safeguard children and young people.

This Act identifies the responsibilities of parents and professionals who must work to ensure the safety of the child. This Act includes two important sections which focus specifically on child protection.

Significant harm – the seriousness of the harm or likely harm that a child is likely to suffer
