Welcome to ‘In Touch’ – The magazine of Cheltenham United Reformed Church, a joint pastorate of the three United Reformed Churches in Cheltenham, sharing a Minister, Rev Maz Allen. The three churches work very closely together, sharing this magazine, the website and all activities. St Andrew’s United Reformed Church is in the Montpellier district of Cheltenham town centre. A former Presbyterian church founded in 1885, it became United Reformed on unification in 1972. Recent renovations now offer an impressive facility, meeting the needs of 21st century Cheltenham. Prestbury United Reformed Church is in the heart of Prestbury village on the northern edge of Cheltenham. A former Congregational chapel built in 1866, becoming United Reformed on unification in 1972. The Church in Warden Hill is a Local Ecumenical Partnership (LEP) between the Anglican (St Christopher’s) and URC communities of Up Hatherley and Warden Hill in the south of Cheltenham. Ministry is shared between the URC Minister, Rev Maz Allen, and Rev Gary Grady of the Anglican South Cheltenham Team Ministry. Both the Anglican and URC buildings are regularly used for worship. For other information about the Church in Warden Hill please see ‘The Lantern’ or visit www.tciwh.org.uk

Our Minister Writes:

Dear Friends, Last month, a few of us from CURC went to All Saints to swell the 250strong choir recording for BBC’s ‘Songs of Praise’. What fun we had and how rich the sound of so many voices. Possibly two of the hymns might be broadcast in Advent, but we don’t know when, as for the rest – they will be used any time during 2017. So watch the programme!! I have always loved being involved in large choirs or listening to full orchestras. I guess I just like loud music! But it’s more than that; there is a level of emotion which helps me to connect with adoration and praise of God. Worship is more…inevitable…somehow. On Remembrance Sunday it is not so much the sound as the sight which stirs the emotion for me – the sight of hundreds of veterans and serving forces personnel at the Cenotaph in London, or the smaller march-past in Cheltenham town centre, or the local village gathering around the war memorial in Prestbury or the quiet laying of wreaths and crosses outside St. Christopher’s. For at least six years I have taken part in the evening Remembrance Service at the Town Hall and have been privileged to actually be on-stage facing the congregation when the poppy petals fall. Extraordinarily moving. One of Cheltenham’s veterans is now a Chelsea Pensioner and the applause he receives is marvellous! Because of others’ sacrifice, we in this country live in peace. Thanks be to God. Amen. Maz

Obituary Barbara Russell-Smith

1931-2016

Barbara was well-known as one of a pair: ‘Denham and Barbara’. As part of St. Andrew’s, they were supportive in all they did for the church. When Denham died twenty months ago Barbara lost her soul-mate. Their favourite pastime was to sit in their garden holding hands, watching the birds and enjoying the flowers. In her tribute at her mother’s funeral Penny referred to Barbara as ‘an English Romantic’. Barbara loved the richness of the English language and she wrote a Georgian romantic novel entitled ‘This Madding Fever’ under the pseudonym Corella Maxwell. Barbara loved dressmaking, flower-arranging and many other craft-oriented hobbies. She (and Denham) were also known for their fudge, sold in great quantities at our church fairs. We will miss Barbara’s charming smile and quiet, calming manner, but we know she longed to be re-united with her one true love. May they both rest in the everlasting bounty of Gods’ love. Our love goes to Penny, William and Edward as well as Barbara’s five grandchildren. Maz

St. Andrew’s Charity for November: CHILDREN IN NEED Children in Need is so well known that it hardly needs introducing, but here goes: The BBC's first ever broadcast appeal for children was a five-minute radio broadcast on Christmas Day in 1927. The response was phenomenal and it raised £1,143 18s 3d which was split between 4 prominent children's charities. The first televised appeal was the 1955 'Children's Hour Christmas Appeal', presented by Sooty and Harry Corbett. The Christmas Day Appeals continued on TV and radio right up until 1979, raising a total of £625,836. The presenters included Terry Hall, Eamonn Andrews, Leslie Crowther, Michael Aspel and the rising star of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show - Terry Wogan - who made his debut appearance in 1978. In 1980 the appeal was broadcast on BBC One in a new telethon format, hosted by Terry Wogan with Sue Lawley and Esther Rantzen. It captured the public's imagination to such an extent that the donations increased dramatically and broke the million mark for the very first time. The 2015 total raised was over £37 million and so far over £800 million has been raised altogether. Children in Need provides grants to projects in the UK which focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged. They are local to people in all corners of the UK and support small and large organisations which empower children and extend their life choices. Locally, charities which have benefitted include Winston's Wish, and Gloucestershire Young Carers. Their vision is that every child in the UK has a childhood which is:  Safe  Happy and Secure  Allows them the chance to reach their potential. Alison Kerr

Wednesday Women October’s meeting saw a good turn-out for our Christmas craft evening. Conversation paused briefly as we concentrated on following the knitting pattern kindly provided by Elspet, making sure we had the right stitches and rows. It was both an enjoyable and productive evening. We are hoping to have a small stall of little Christmas treats at the December Regeneration & Repair café. Dave Entwistle from Vision 21 will be joining us for November’s meeting in St Andrew’s on Wednesday 2 November at 7.15 pm. Vision 21 is a small independent charity, promoting sustainable living and supports the Regeneration & Repair Café. Dave will be talking to us about Vision 21, global warming and offering tips on how people can help combat climate change. All welcome. Carol Drummond

Let Us Remember

Of the 1291 names from the First World War on the Cheltenham Town Memorial, two appear to be associated with St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. These are the Gibbs Brothers:

Edgar Biggerstaff Gibbs Ivan Richard Gibbs Of the 41 names from the First World War on the Prestbury War Memorial one was associated with the Prestbury Union Church:

Percival Thomas Fildes Death knows of no class or rank and all are arranged in surname order. Every year at the Remembrance Sunday Service at both Memorials their full names, and the names of the dead from the Second World War are read aloud.

2016 is the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. We especially remember the SIX Cheltenham men who died on 1st July 1916 and the THIRTEEN Cheltenham men, mostly of the 8th Gloucester’s who died on 3rd July 1916.

The Gibbs Brothers Mr and Mrs Gibbs appear in the St Andrew’s Pew Rent Book for the years 1913 -18, paying for five seats, and living in Park Place, the same address that both Edgar and Ivan gave when they joined up. This continuity suggests that the family were regular attenders at St Andrew’s. William and Harriet (nee Rodier) Gibbs married by civil registration in Exeter in 1877, moving to Cheltenham where they set up home in Grafton Street, Leckhampton. Seven children were born, Harold, Ethel, Margaret, Edgar, Edith, Arthur and Ivan. Sometime between 1891 and 1901 the family moved to Montpelier Walk where William had his own Fancy Drapery business, which by 1911 was called an Art/Needlework Repository. All the children except Ivan appear to have worked in the business at some point. By 1911 the family had moved again, to Montpellier Villas, and by 1914 were living in Park Place.

Edgar Biggerstaff Gibbs (1883-1917) was the second son of the family. He initially worked as a Drapery Assistant and joined the1/4th Battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment in Worthing, where he had set up his family home. This Territorial Battalion was drafted to India, where Private Edgar Gibbs died of illness in 1917 aged 34. He is commemorated on the Kirkee Memorial and Cheltenham Town Memorial.

Ivan Richard Gibbs (1891 – 1915) was the youngest child of the Gibbs family. He was educated at Cheltenham Grammar School and Jesus College, Oxford, then joined the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps in 1913, volunteering immediately on the outbreak of war. He was Gazetted as 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, and promoted to Captain in July 1915. The Regiment was sent to France in August ready for action in September. Captain Ivan Gibbs was killed in Action at Loos on 25th September 1915 aged 23. He is commemorated on the Cheltenham Town Memorial. Janet Kemp 14

Percival Thomas Fildes

November 2016

1892 – 1918

Percival Thomas Fildes was the only child of William Thomas Fildes and his wife Elizabeth (nee Cosher) who had married in 1889. William was a market gardener and greengrocer and in 1891 they lived at ‘The Laurels’, Prestbury (possibly the old house by Laurel Drive). Percival was born there on 8th March 1892. William died in May 1900 but Elizabeth continued to run the market garden. By 1911 Elizabeth is ‘living on private means’, Percival is working as an ironmonger and they have as a lodger the Revd William Holt who was a Congregational Minister. When the Membership Roll of Prestbury Union Church was drawn up in 1914 Elizabeth (but not her son) is listed as a member. She died in September 1947 and was buried with her husband in Cheltenham Cemetery after a funeral at the church. From his service record, Percival joined the Army Reserve in November 1915 and then the Royal Naval Reserve for the Royal Naval Division in June 1917. He lists his religion as ‘Union Church’. He was mobilised in Jun 1917 and sent to the 2 nd Reserve Battalion at Blandford. On 13 October 1917 he joined the Howe Battalion of the RND, British Expeditionary Force (BEF) but from that November he spent 4 months in hospital with a leg injury. On 1 May 1918 he was posted to the Hood Battalion as an Able Seaman. According to the Royal Naval Museum website, the RND was formed from naval reserve forces when all warships were fully staffed in order to help fill a shortfall in the infantry land forces. Howe and Hood Battalions were part of the 2 nd Brigade RND. When they went to France as part of the BEF in 1916 they were designated the 63rd (RN) Division. In 1917 the RND served at Passchendaele, Gavrelle and Welsh Ridge. They also served at Gallipoli. The Division was disbanded in 1919 and there is a memorial, designed by Lutyens, on Horse Guards Parade to the approximately 48,000 men who were lost in the War. Percival Fildes was killed in action, aged 26, on the 4th of September 1918 during the battle of the Drocourt – Queant Line (part of the 2nd Battle of Arras). He is commemorated on the memorial at Vis-en-Artois near Arras. Fiona Hall

Regeneration/Repair Café Word is slowly getting round about the Regeneration and Repair café. We saw a few return visitors and some new folk. October’s café featured a guest repairer – IT Schools Africa – who were on hand to look at laptops, ipads, ipods and tablets. IT Schools Africa is a UK-registered charity based in Cheltenham and was founded in 2004. Their mission is to create positive lives through education, by providing access to e-Learning to schools throughout Africa. They collect and refurbish computer equipment in the UK and distribute it at low-cost to schools in Africa. In the UK they work with back to work employment and training agencies and other charities helping to support and train people currently out of work. They also teach computer refurbishment and IT skills to disadvantaged and disabled people on work experience placements. We also had a couple of the new students from the University of Gloucestershire shadowing the volunteer repairers. As mentioned in September’s In Touch, Kevin and Nick from the West Midlands Synod joined us to make a short film. It was good to see that we had a steady stream of people coming through and there was a real buzz to the place. Both Kevin and Nick were very enthusiastic about the project and wished us all the best for the future. The film when available will be loaded to You Tube and the details will be shared in due course. Thanks to those who popped in whether to get something repaired or just to show their support. It is appreciated. Carol Drummond

From the Editor Smile please! It costs nothing, but creates much; It enriches those who receive without impoverishing those who give; It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts for ever. None are so rich that they can get along without it; None are so poor, but are richer for the benefit. It is rest to the weary, sunshine to the sad, And nature’s best antidote for trouble. It cannot be bought, borrowed or stolen, For it is something that is no earthly good until it is given away, And yet when it is given away, it always comes back; And nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none to give. Anon. With all good wishes to everyone. Janet Kemp
