Geography

Geography

Curriculum Connections • Graphically demonstrates the physical features of a river • Introduces geographical concepts, vocabulary and ideas associated with rivers

• Shows how people interact with the river and its immediate environment • Using water: transport, industry, hydroelectricity

Investigating Rivers uses breathtaking aerial photography to demonstrate the physical features of rivers from source to mouth. Its two case studies, the Rhône in France and the Usk in Wales, examine how people use rivers for transport, industry and tourism.

The Rhône

Riverflight

We see how the power of this mighty river is harnessed for hydroelectricity, look at industrial, agricultural and leisure usage of the river along its course, and learn why the French city of Lyon grew up around a river confluence. In the Camargue Delta, we discover the rich animal life of the region, including bulls, wild horses and flamingos.

These two programmes provide a pilot’s-eye view of a river along its entire course, following the River Usk in South Wales from its bleak moorland source in the Brecon Beacons to its mouth near the industrial city of Newport. Stunning aerial photography demonstrates how the Usk is used for agricultural and industrial purposes, and how it manages to support a variety of wildlife on its 137 km journey. 1. From the Mountain Spring 2. To the Open Sea

This series follows the course of one of Europe’s major rivers, from source to mouth. From its Alpine source to the Camargue Delta, it has dramatically shaped the surrounding landscape and had an effect on its near neighbours. The programmes familiarise viewers with the major challenges of the day and their underlying economic and social causes. They also inspire pupils to make a difference to the environment.

Once Upon a Planet explores some of the major environmental problems of our time. The programmes ring an ‘alarm bell’, spelling out the sheer scale of the global crises confronting us – biodiversity extinction, climate change, pollution and over-consumption of natural resources. Yet there is also a campaigning edge to the programmes, highlighting solutions being developed in Britain and around the world, to show what ordinary citizens can do. The programmes stress the economic and social issues underlying environmental crises and the need to pursue a global model based on the ideal of sustainable consumption.

They enlist help from Lisa, the space ferry pilot, eccentric Uncle Zak and a group of robotic helpers, the Wattbots. This series is designed to develop mathematical skills and confidence, while demonstrating that maths can be fun. Each programme consists of an animation sequence that highlights one maths problem within a self-contained story. This is complemented by a section that uses animation and graphics to further illustrate the same maths focus and make it more explicit. These programmes can be used on their own to fit in with any teaching scheme, or as a whole class introduction to consolidate the topic being studied. Living and Growing was developed by Channel 4 in response to requests from teachers and heads for a resource that promotes Sex and Relationship Education (SRE). This alternative version has been edited to introduce pupils to the core issues of Sex and Relationship education while being sensitive to the diverse cultures and faiths they may belong to. This animated and documentary series follows the developmental process, beginning in the early years at an appropriate level and progressing through childhood and adolescence. The series covers physical development and reproduction, and encourages children to act responsibly in making and maintaining relationships with others and to feel good about themselves and the choices they make. Further guidance for teachers, parents and governors is provided in a booklet that supports the series and the supplementary INSET programme. Please note: these programmes address sensitive issues. It is recommended that teachers watch the programmes as part of their lesson preparation before showing them to pupils.

Different issues that children may encounter in everyday life are explored through dramatised stories. Comedian Sean Hughes then invites a studio audience of children to vote on how the issue raised in the episode should be resolved. The viewers are encouraged to join in the debate and arrive at their own decisions.

Three thought-provoking dramas that challenge children to make an informed decision about their own and others’ behaviour. The scenarios enable children to confront risky situations in which they could realistically find themselves, within the safe context of a television programme.

These five dramas are based around events in the lives of children staying at an outdoor pursuits centre in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. The storylines focus on difficult situations challenging the children, tackling issues such as maintaining relationships, peer pressure, conflict, discrimination and dealing with change.

Activity Book Provides an inspirational introduction to exploring and investigating materials, together with ideas for designing and making.

Life and Living Processes

Materials

Opposites

Basic life processes and conditions for growth in plants, animals and humans are presented and explained in this series. The third programme takes a sensitive look at death as a natural and inevitable part of the life cycle.

The first of these two programmes investigates why some materials decay yet others do not. It then shows how drink cans are transformed into aluminium ingots at a recycling plant. The second programme reveals how plastic powder is transformed into a child’s rocker using the processes of heating, moulding, rotating and cooling. It also looks at the materials used to create carpentry tools, kitchen utensils and other household equipment and asks the viewer to consider what qualities make these materials suited to the function and purpose of the object.

Five programmes that relate directly to materials and physical processes and give understandable contexts for science explorations and investigations. The programmes can also be used as stimuli for topic work.

Curriculum Connections • Sources of energy

• Electricity

• Magnetism

• Light and sound

These five programmes from the popular Stage 2 Science series introduce challenging scientific concepts in a meaningful way using real-life examples and practical applications of science in everyday settings, including the home. Complex ideas and processes are clearly conveyed using video footage and animation. Pupils see children of their own age engaged in investigation and experimentation, acquiring scientific skills and developing an understanding of scientific processes through hands-on work.

1. Energy Resources

5. Light

A group of children enjoy a study trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology in Mid Wales, which produces it own energy supply from natural sources. The children investigate different ways of generating power – by wind, water and burning wood. They apply the lessons they’ve learnt about energy conservation on their return home.

A group of children visiting the Techniquest science exhibition speculate on how light reaches us from the stars. The programme clears up common misconceptions about how our eyes detect light. A race between a light beam and an Olympic sprinter shows us just how fast light travels.

2. Magnetism At the Royal Institution in London, where scientist Michael Faraday made his discoveries about electromagnetism, a clown shows pupils the difference between magic and magnetism. The ‘clown’, now dressed as Faraday, repeats his experiments and pupils are asked to predict the outcomes. But which are magic and which involve magnetism? This programme visually demonstrates the effects of this mysterious force.

Shadows are formed when objects obstruct straight beams of light. In the programme, this process is illustrated by a laser and an eclipse casting a shadow on the Earth’s surface. Smooth surfaces reflect light, and curved mirrors form strange images. Pupils see the processes involved in creating mirrors at a factory. Finally, the programme investigates how light is refracted at the surface of water. 5 × 15-minute programmes

Embedded support material

3. Electricity Ellie the Electron, a cartoon character, shows pupils that electricity can be made from a variety of energy sources, whether renewable or non-renewable. The programme demonstrates why a full circuit is necessary for electricity to flow, whether it’s through overhead cables or through wires in a model circuit in the classroom. Ellie weighs up the convenience of electricity as a means of providing power against the pollution that can be caused when generating it. The programme concludes with a reminder that mains electricity can be dangerous.

• Resource Book, offering a rich source of ideas for scientific activities in the classroom that follow on from viewing the programmes • Teachers’ Guide, designed to assist teachers in lesson planning for effective use of the programmes in the classroom. It includes programme outlines, learning outcomes, practical activities and investigations

4. Sound Musicians playing the sitar and tabla demonstrate how sounds are made by using their instruments. Using an electronic device, we can clearly see the vibrations made by strings, drums and our own vocal cords. The difference between volume and pitch is clearly illustrated using a range of sounds, from the soft sound of falling leaves to the loud noise of a road drill. The programme also shows how our ears are sensitive to sound by amplifying it and transmitting it to the brain.
