JEAN MONNET@CRonEM SUMMER SCHOOL

About the Summer School Several years into the financial crisis, the European integration process is more than ever challenged by different dynamics that are producing political and social fragmentation. By consequence, old methodological and theoretical paradigms elaborated in EU studies prove to be limited when it comes to the interpretation of new developments that seem to be leading towards a disintegration of the European public space rather than to a further integration. The Summer School addresses this discussion by taking into account different key debates that become relevant in this context, such as: » the new methodological challenges for the study of Europeanisation in the context of the eurocrisis; » the rise in populism and euroscepticism in many different countries and across Europe; » the impact of austerity measures in challenging the European Social Dimension, with a particular focus on the effects on gender policy; » the effects of the crisis in radically changing political and social structures in countries that have been especially hit by the austerity measures, with a particular focus on Southern European Countries. The Summer School aims to enhance the quality of teaching and research on these particular issues, introducing students to key debates based on fresh empirical research and reflection. It provides a range of opportunities to engage with key scholars in these areas. The Summer School involves experts and researchers coming from different European countries and from a rich mix of scientific backgrounds, including political sociology, social policy, political science, and policy studies.

The Summer School builds on existing exchanges in the field of social sciences shaped by the CRonEM research centre. CRonEM, the Centre for Research on the European Matrix, explores the everyday impact of European integration on citizens’ lives, evaluating how the EU and the other continental organisations shape the way we live. Format In particular, the Summer School will focus on Europe between integration and disintegration though a triple format: » Masterclass lectures delivered by keynote speakers in the morning (3 hour session) » Afternoon sessions with the CRonEM academic staff and the key note speakers (2 hour session). » Poster and drop in sessions where students have the possibility to engage with the Summer School teaching staff (1 hour session)

Summer School Students 2014

I had a fantastic time at the Summer School, met some great people and definitely learnt a lot – Ian Lovering Currently studying a Research Master’s in European Studies in the Netherlands, I applied to the Summer School hoping to build on my studies over the past year while focusing on a topic of particular interest to me in developing ideas for my thesis. On this, the Summer School surpassed my expectations. Outside of academics, the Summer School was equally enjoyable. Plentiful opportunities to get to know fellow participants, organisers and speakers through meals out and abundant food and drink meant there was never a dull moment. Being my first time at the University of Surrey, and in Guildford, I found it was an excellent location for a summer school – big enough to have plenty to offer, not so big that I would get lost on my walk home!

Master Student, University of Maastricht The Netherlands

Dr Chiara Sighele Researcher at the Osservatorio Dei Balcani, Rovereto, Italy I have worked for an Italian think-tank and online media devoted to Southeast Europe, Turkey and the Caucasus for years. Being in charge of monitoring EU funding opportunities and drafting proposals, I am regularly confronted with a huge amount of information by and about EU institutions and I felt the need to improve my skills to critically examine and elaborate it. The lecturers’ readiness for open discussion, the relatively small number of participants and the group activities during the methodological sessions prompted a high degree of interaction and made attending the classes a real pleasure!
