Student Information

So you are about to join the ranks of the many expats living in Shanghai? While a fascinating time awaits you, expat life in China can be challenging for newcomers to the country and its culture. You will encounter an extraordinary city with a unique mixture of Western lifestyle and Eastern flair. Both Chinese residents and expats have described this metropolis in extravagant terms: “Pearl of the Orient”, “Gateway to the World”, “Dragon’s Head”, or “Paris of the East” – nicknames that will make your plan of moving to Shanghai appear even more exciting. However fascinating the city might seem, one shouldn’t romanticize it, but rather appreciate the interesting, albeit turbulent history that has made Shanghai what it is today.

Accommodation

Shanghai has a vast range of options for temporary accommodation. There’s no shortage of hotels, hotel apartments, guesthouses and motels to choose from if you need somewhere to rest while waiting to move into more permanent living quarters. Hotel Apartments are good option if you plan to take your time finding suitable housing to rent. They normally come fully furnished with kitchens and access to extensive facilities. They are available daily, weekly, monthly and even yearly. Another option is to browse the housing sections of www.smartshanghai.com, www.shanghaiexpat.com or www.airbnb.com to see if anyone is letting their apartment short-term while they’re out of the country.

Rental Prices

Expat comfort has its price. In comparison to the average standard of living among Shanghai’s lower middle classes, the typical expatriate life style is fairly luxurious. A three-bedroom apartment in Shanghai cost about 15,000 CNY (or 2,450 USD). If you choose a nonprime area, housing will obviously be cheaper. Transportation

Metro

Shanghai has an underground network as well and fastest way to travel across the city. The 14 lines of the Shanghai Metro boast the distinct advantage of having English announcements and bilingual signs

at their various stops. On the down side, crowds are usually dense during the daily rush hours of 7:30-10am and 5-7:30pm. Trains are almost always on time and at busy stations in the central areas arrive every three to five minutes. Tickets cost RMB3-7. All signs and maps are clear and in English, making the train system easy to navigate. Bus There are well over 1,000 bus routes, taking you to every corner of Shanghai, operated by a variety of private companies. The rides are cheap. Direct journeys, which can be purchased in cash from the driver, cost about RMB 2. However, prepare to hit a major language and navigation barrier. Unlike metro, this is not a recommended mode of transportation for a newcomer.

Taxi

Taxis are generally a cheap and efficient way to get around Shanghai, traffic permitting. There are approximately 45,000 taxis in operation in the city. Taxi fares start at RMB 14 for the first two kilometers, RMB 2.4 for each additional kilometer. Tipping is not expected, but welcomed nonetheless. Shanghai taxis are mostly reliable, safe, and still affordable. imately 45,000 taxis in operation in the city.
