Teaching English as Second Language

Course Description This is a 63-hour (9 Saturdays) introductory, yet comprehensive and intensive training course on Teaching English as a Second Language that provides teachers with the essential knowledge and background in second language learning, teaching, and assessment. This course aims to equip the teachers with some basic theories, skills, techniques, and strategies in teaching English and assessing the student’s learning of English as a second language. The focus of the assessment component of the course is formative assessment of learning in order to provide an enlightening background on its role in learning a second language. The participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion for attending ALL modules of this intensive short course on Teaching English as a Second Language or a Certificate of Participation for attending any one of the modules.

Schedule Day 1: AM Session Topic: Nature of language This module acquaints the participants with the nature of language- its structure, characteristics, elements, and functions and exposes them to communicative situations when language is acquired or learned through the development and use of the macro skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Day 1: PM Session Topic: The Role of English in Globalization; Varieties of English and World Englishes TESL, TESOL, TWE, TSE, TOEIC, TEFL, IELTS, etc. This module acquaints the participants with the role of English in globalization, the varieties of English and world Englishes- their similarities and differences as they are used in different parts of the world and how any language such as English can hold and exercise power among its users. This further acquaints the participants with terms used in the field of

language teaching and testing such as TESL, TESOL, TEFL among others. Day 2: AM Session Topic: Theories of First Language Acquisition This module presents background and overview of the major theoretical approaches to language acquisition. The course hopes to raise the awareness of the participants on the complex nature of how language is acquired and to find application of these approaches in their personal and professional lives as language teachers or as teachers using English as medium of instruction. Day 2: PM Session Topic: Theories of Language Learning This module presents background and overview of the major theoretical approaches to language learning as opposed to language acquisition. The course hopes to raise the awareness of the participants on the complex nature of how language is acquired or learned and to find application of these approaches in their personal and professional lives as language teachers or as teachers using English as medium of instruction. Day 3: AM Session Topic: A Survey of the Methods and Approaches in Second/ Foreign Language Teaching This module surveys the historical development and pedagogical evolution of the methods and approaches in second/foreign language teaching. This hopes to provide the participants a repertoire of different approaches that they may find relevant and useful in their current teaching context whether they are language teachers or teachers of any subject using English as medium of communication. Day 3: PM Session Topic: Communicative Language Teaching Approach and CLT Methods of Teaching This module presents the assumptions, theories and principles of Communicative Language Teaching Approach and demonstrates how any language and content course can be transformed into a communicative and learner-centered classroom. Day 4: AM Session Topics: English Language Arts Curriculum Framework This module highlights how to achieve balance and coherence in the integration of the

macro-skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing) and domains (oral language, phonological awareness, book and print knowledge, alphabet knowledge, phonics and word recognition, fluency, spelling, writing and composition, grammar awareness and structure, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, attitudes towards language, literacy and literature, and study strategies) in the Language Arts Curriculum. Day 4: PM Session Topic: Assessment in the English Language Arts This module presents the differences among testing, assessment, and evaluation and focuses on the role of formative evaluation in the teaching and learning processes. Different formative strategies/procedures are presented to the participants as options in the hope of using assessment AS learning and FOR learning and not just using tests for assessment OF learning. Day 5: Whole Day Topics: Strategies in Teaching and Assessing Vocabulary Strategies in Teaching and Assessing Reading These two modules present different strategies in teaching and assessing vocabulary and reading not only as skills in learning/acquiring a language but also in teaching any courses where vocabulary building and reading are used as tool skills in learning content. Day 6: Whole Day Topic: Strategies in Teaching and Assessing Interactive Listening and Speaking This module presents strategies in teaching and assessing interactive listening not only in English language classes but also in other courses where listening and speaking are actively used to learn content. Moreover, it presents different strategies in teaching and assessing speaking not only in English language classes but also in other courses where listening and speaking are actively used to learn content. Day 7: Whole Day Topic: Strategies in Teaching and Assessing Essay Writing This module present various strategies in teaching and assessing essay writing not only in language classes but in any course where English is used as medium of instruction. It also presents ways of scoring essays using holistic and analytic rubrics.

Day 8 Topic: Integrating the Teaching of Grammar into the Teaching and Testing of the Macro Skills This module acquaints the participants with theories, techniques and principles on how the teaching of grammar can be integrated into the teaching and assessment of the macro skills. The course hopes to acquaint the participants with learner-centered and communicative strategies of teaching grammar while teaching the other macro skills. Day 9: Whole Day –Demonstration Teaching Day
