2005 Annual Report Mission Statement

The mission of the Center is to optimize care and systems of care for patients and families faced with non-curable diseases by generating new knowledge through interdisciplinary research, using that knowledge to educate health and human service professionals, DQGLQÁXHQFLQJSXEOLFSROLF\VXSSRUWLQJ quality end of life care.

Dr. Burton is DSURPLVLQJUHVHDUFKHULQHQGRIOLIHVWXGLHVDQG DFUHGLWWRWKH&HQWHUDQGWR86) Elissa Foster, PhD, IRUPHUGRF toral student in the Department RI&RPPXQLFDWLRQDW86)UHFHLYHG a Center Pilot Research Grant in  LQVXSSRUWRIKHUVWXG\  ´&RPPXQLFDWLRQDWWKH(QGRI  /LIH/HVVRQVIURP+RVSLFH9RO unteers.” Dr. Foster has written a book about her experiences entitled, “Communication and 5HODWLRQVKLSVLQ+RVSLFH9ROXQWHHUVDQG3DWLHQWV Finding Magic in the Mundane,” which will be published in June 2006 by Lawrence Erlbaum Publishers. Dr. Foster is currently an Assistant 3URIHVVRULQWKH'HSDUWPHQWRI&RPPXQLFDWLRQ DW6DQ-RVH6WDWH8QLYHUVLW\

7KHSXEOLFDWLRQRIWKHUHVXOWVRID JURXQGEUHDNLQJUDQGRPL]HGFOLQL cal trial conducted by Susan McMillan, PhD, ARNP, FAAN in the journal Cancer in December  KDVDOVRUHFHLYHGDORWRI  ZHOOGHVHUYHGDWWHQWLRQ7KH VWXG\HYDOXDWHGWKHLPSDFWRIDFRSLQJVNLOOV LQWHUYHQWLRQZLWKIDPLO\FDUHJLYHUVRIKRVSLFH patients with cancer, and was conducted in col laboration with Center members Brent Small, PhD; Ronald Schonwetter, MD; and William E. +DOH\3K'7KHVWXG\ZKLFKZDVIXQGHGE\WKH National Cancer Institute and the National Insti WXWHRI1XUVLQJ5HVHDUFKIRXQGWKDWWKHFRSLQJ LQWHUYHQWLRQZDVHIIHFWLYHLQLPSURYLQJFDUHJLYHU TXDOLW\RIOLIHDQGUHGXFLQJFDUHJLYHUEXUGHQUH lated to patients’ symptoms and caregiving tasks. The Center is increasingly visible in our local area as well as regionally and nationally. An article about the Center and hospice care was published in MD News in November 2005. The Center’s FRQIHUHQFH“Quality and Meaning at the Endof-Life: Practice, Research and Policy,” was attended E\RYHUUHVHDUFKHUVDQGFOLQLFLDQVIURPWKH Southeast region and around the country.
