Friends continue to support the Foundation by giving to the Education Program, Tumwater Falls Park and the Schmidt House through donations, memorials and endowments. With their

assistance, we are able to continue to serve the community honoring the heritage left to us by the Schmidt family. Over the past 56 years, we have gone from giving one $500 scholarship in 1967 to $80,000 for Traditional and $10,000 for Transitional Scholarships in 2006. Another $5,000 has been allocated to start our Grant Program for innovative classroom projects. The Foundation owes its volunteers a huge thank you for all their efforts. We could not accomplish so much without their help. The most gratifying experience is hearing from those who were awarded scholarships upon (Continued Page 8)

President’s Corner (Continued from Page 1) their graduation from college. We hear many times just how important our scholarship dollars are to students in helping them achieve their educational and life goals. An exciting work in progress is our Archive Project. The Olympia Tumwater Foundation was given thousands of photos, written materials and memorabilia from the Olympia Brewing Company. Volunteers are working to make enlarged photos available for identification and publication. Our goal is to have these photos available to the public in late 2006. Last but not least, a group of community volunteers has joined members of the Foundation to put together a “Brewery Picnic” to be held on August 4, 2007. More news will be forthcoming. The next 56 years will continue to bear fruit from all of the labors of our vibrant, hardworking volunteers, staff and board of trustees. Best regards, Dan O’Neill

B

ob Crim was hired by the Olympia Brewing Company back in 1956. He began his lifetime career as grounds caretaker for Peter Schmidt, Sr., Brewery President and his wife Clara.

Even though Bob raised flowers and designed the flower beds on the Olympia Brewing Company property, most of his work was focused at the Schmidt House for Clara Schmidt. Up until the time of Clara’s death in 1960, Bob worked six days a week either chauffeuring Clara around town, babysitting her 13 grandchildren during the summer time or transporting family members to and from the airport and train station. With a subtle smile beginning to grow at the corners of his mouth, Bob Bob Crim, Senior Caretaker and long-time employee. recalls a time when he drove Clara to town on an errand. “The towns people knew Clara’s car and the police knew it too. She owned a pink Buick. Clara always insisted I park in places where it was restricted. I was uncomfortable doing that but I did it to make her happy. When we were walking back to the car we saw a policeman standing by the car preparing to write up a ticket. He looked down at the license plate, looked over the pink-colored Buick, then put away his ticket book!” Bob remembers fondly, “Clara was a great lady with a mind of her own.” Bob was famously train station picking up when they arrived.

“You can’t keep me away.”

known as the man with the “plastic red hat”. Since he frequented the airport and grandchildren and other family members it was easy for the children to spot him

In his 50-years of employment Bob lived through the sale of the Schmidt House to the Olympia Brewing Company and then to the Olympia Tumwater Foundation. He also witnessed the sale of the Olympia Brewing Company to Pabst Brewing Company which lead to his employment with the Olympia Tumwater Foundation. To this day Bob continues to work for the Foundation as Senior Caretaker at the Schmidt House. He loves his job stating, “You can’t keep me away. There’s nothin’ else I’d rather be doing!”
