CELEBRATING 70 YEARS FORMER PRINCIPALS

Celebrations to mark the 70th Anniversary of Nazarene Theological College, Manchester, were held over the weekend, 13th-14th September. Over 200 attended the special events.

Although attempts to establish a Bible College were made by Dr George Sharpe in the early part of the last century (the Parkhead (Glasgow) Holiness Bible School in 1908, and the Pentecostal Bible College in Glasgow’s West End in 1913) it was in 1944 that Hurlet House near Paisley, to the West of Glasgow, was purchased and Hurlet Nazarene College was founded. Dr George Frame 1944-1954

Dr Hugh Rae 19541966, 1973-1986

In 1959, following the union of the Church of the Nazarene and the Calvary Holiness Church in 1955 (when the two Colleges, Hurlet and Beech Lawn, amalgamated to form British Isles Nazarene College), the College moved to Manchester. The name of the College was changed, in 1990, to Nazarene Theological College, and in 1997 Emmanuel Bible College, Birkenhead, became an integral part of NTC. The College Campus has seen significant change over the years. This has included the building of Hurlet Hall in 1961, the addition of the J B Maclagan Chapel and café complex in 1978, the purchase of Dene House in 1987, and the building of the three-storey Emmanuel Centre and Library in 2004 (the library was named the “Hugh Rae Library” in 2010). And further improvements and refurbishments have been made in recent years. Academically the College has moved from a diploma and certificate level institution to preparing students for degree courses up to and including PhD. Degree validations came first through Canadian Nazarene College and preparing students for the London University BD degree, then through the Council for National Academic Awards and, in 1992, as a partner institution of The University of Manchester. The College was listed in the Church Times in 2009 as one of the top 16 UK Bible Colleges.

The founding Principal, Dr George Frame, gave the College its motto, “Scholarship on Fire” which continues to express the mission and vision of the College. For more information visit: www.nazarene.ac.uk

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

LURGAN ANNIVERSARY

In June a group of young people from England & Wales gathered together for the LDI Covenant weekend held at Whitewood Lakes Centre, Staffordshire. The weekend included many team building activities including raft building, self-awareness tasks, team challenges, along with seminars, creative worship, devotional reflections – and lots of opportunities to share stories and laugh together. Director of Momentum UK, Rev Trevor Hutton, reports, “The primary aim of the weekend was to create a community of mentors and mentees led by the Momentum LDI team to journey together over a two year period…enabling young adults to explore and develop leadership potential. The event was amazing…and we hope that the covenant we all voluntary signed in the presence of God and one another will remind us of the commitment we have made to follow the process through so that we all reach the “commissioning” at the end of the two years together and rejoice in what God has done.”

WESTON BAPTISM

Pentecost Sunday, 8th June, was a day of special blessing in Weston-super-Mare as families and friends witnessed the baptism of two young men – Matthew Hall (18) the son of Rev Barry & Audrey Hall, & Jaden Sadiq (15) the son of Tina & Matthew Sadiq. Local church member, Tina Sadiq, says, “…we have had the privilege of watching these young men come to Christ and come to the decision of baptism… [it] was a tremendous witness to our church and non-believers that shared in the day.” The service was held in the Purple Sheep Centre (Assemblies of God) and the baptisms were conducted by Rev Barry Hall, assisted by Tony Goodman of the Weston church.

NYUK YOUTH CAMP 2014 Report by Maria Fallaize (Leeds South) - teenager/NYUK Council Member. “Camp was amazing! This year there were 42 youth and 35 leaders attending. The Camp was held, 24th-29th August, at Smallwood Manor in Staffordshire which was perfect for this year’s theme, “Lords & Ladies”. It was a really nice place. The worship in the services was awesome, and the worship team incredibly talented, but what made it special was the sight of so many people connecting with God and praising Him. The speaker was Rev Carl McCann (Ashton) and throughout the week he spoke on the Beatitudes. Most people really seemed to take something from the sermons he brought to us. On most nights we were given time afterwards when we were able to pray at different stations in the room and read scripture which was great. As always it was full of fun and awesome games, but the most amazing thing was to see so many people singing and speaking God’s praise, which was a wonderful thing for me to see and experience. After speaking to many youth at the camp the final words to sum it up are, amazing, spiritual, helpful, fun - and wonderful! Amen to that!”

AGAPE MINISTRIES

Agape Ministries held in the Houston church, are for senior adults and meet on the last Saturday of each month. Iris Shepherd, Janette McNeil, Vanessa Coetzee and Jeanette Docherty make up the organising committee. Songs, fellowship, refreshments and a Bible Reading make up the programme. On Saturday, 26th July, the group enjoyed a bus trip to the Dobbies Garden Centre in Stirling, and this was followed by a fish tea in Callander. Jeanette Docherty comments, “…a few of us do taxi service to pick up most of our seniors…what great times of fellowship we have…we are truly blessed.”

Claudette is a longstanding member of the London Clapham Junction Church and has served the church as Sunday School Teacher, NYI & NMI President, and she is currently involved in the children’s work. Local pastor, Rev Joe Bentham, says, “Claudette is a very faithful and involved member of the church and has been for over 40 years. The Hart family, Claudette, her sister Diana, and the family as a whole, have the gift of hospitality and have opened their homes to Nazarene visitors from overseas and well as having helped students by giving them temporary accommodation. LEEDS SOUTH BIBLE CLUB

Summer fun was enjoyed by children at the Cottingley Springs Travellers’ Site in Leeds. Every Friday in August about a dozen children, and some parents, gathered together for a Holiday Bible Club which was based on the theme of “Friends and Heroes”. Each week the children enjoyed, videos, stories, songs, prayers, crafts and games. The initiative to reach out to the Travellers’ Site came from Board Member, Eileen James. Previous outreach had brought Eileen and others to the church, where they came to faith and became members. Some of the children from Cottingley come regularly to the Leeds South church on a Sunday evening for a special Sunday School Class. Thanks to Eileen James, Jenna Jones, Rev Ian Newton (Barnsley) and to all who volunteered and helped with the Summer Club.

EPIC WALK

Kevin McCann, longstanding member of the Ashton Church, walked from John O’Groats to Land’s End between 3rd June and 19th August. Walking for a total of 72 days and covering about 18 miles a day, with one rest day per week, Kevin’s walk totalled approximately 1200 miles. To date over £13,000 has been raised through sponsorships to support “TearFund – fresh water in Africa”, “Nazarene Missions – fresh water in Sri Lanka” and “New Hope Ashton” (a local charity operating from the Ashton Church of the Nazarene). Along the route Kevin was joined by family and friends, some walking many miles with him. Kevin says, “What I experienced again and again was the generosity and kindness from people I had never met before who stopped to talk and sometimes gave donations and even shared their lunch with me. All my accommodation was donated from friends in various Nazarene churches and from other churches - people I had never met before - and from people who did not claim to have a faith.”

HOLIDAY BIBLE CLUB

Dromore (N.I.) Holiday Bible Club was held 18th22nd August with the theme, “Run the Race”. Esther Christie reports, “Over the week many different children were taught how to ‘Run the Race with Jesus’. The Church Hall was decorated as a running track – our very own Nazarene Stadium! Most importantly the children had the opportunity of learning about Jesus through Bible Stories, singing, quizzes, craft and games. The topics during the course of the week were: Trust Jesus, Believe the Bible, Jesus is the Way, Tell Others and Choose Heaven. As a result of the Club new children have started attending the weekly meetings.”

DUVETS COVERS & MATTRESS PROTECTORS

Northbreak Holiday makers may be wondering what happened to all the duvet covers and mattress protectors collected at the end of the Northbreak week. Rev Carl McCann (Ashton) reports, “…they were put to good use! Jon Wrigley, a new member of the Ashton congregation was pleased to accept around 50 of each (covers and protectors) for a night shelter he works for in Rochdale, Others were used by the Ashton church who, along with the Longsight church and 5 congregations from other denominations, help to support the Boaz night shelter (www.boaztrust.co.uk) for destitute asylum seekers in the Manchester area. This programme runs throughout the winter months with each participating church providing accommodation for up to 12 homeless men for 1 night each per week. Thank you Northbreak! Sleep well tonight knowing that having slept well at Northbreak there will be many homeless Jon Wrigley accepts people also sleeping better.” covers

NORTHBREAK 2014

Over 200 adults, teenagers and children, attended Northbreak, which was held, 2nd-8th August in Lancaster Grammar School in the North of England. It was a fantastic week of fun, fellowship, teaching, worship, and included all the holiday activities which make Northbreak so special. Northbreak Worship Centre Rev Jim Ritchie (Trinity Perth) reports, “This year’s theme was “MORE” and all the excellent seminar speakers and preachers engaged with this throughout the week. The main seminar speakers were Dr Deirdre Brower Latz (NTC), Dr Fred Drummond (Evangelical Alliance Scotland) and Pastor Chris Franklin (Perth) who spoke to the many young people at Northbreak. Other speakers included Rob Parsons (Care for the Family) and Rev Philip McAlister (District Superintendent). Off site activities included a number of first class day trips to Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool. Northbreak 2014 was an enormous success in every way and those who came were able to relax, make new friendships and deepen old ones, discover ‘More’ of God and return to their local church refreshed and empowered to serve. Bring on Northbreak 2015!”

IN MEMORIAM

Anna Evans, wife, mother, grandmother and partner in ministry, died Friday, 3rd October. She was 83. Born Anna Hair Henderson in Paisley, Scotland, and one of a family of 9, she began work with the Co-op doing gents tailoring and acquired skills which would be useful for much of her life. She met Leslie Evans when he was a student at Hurlet Nazarene College, and Les and Anna were married in Paisley on 23rd April 1955 – Les’s brother, Don Evans, conducted the service. Over some 39 years Anna gave help and support to her husband, Rev Leslie Evans, in a number of ministry appointments, including, Bolton (Arden Street), Edmonton (Canada), Fenton, Sheffield Victoria Street (for 18 years), Manchester Didsbury, and Oldham. The Evans returned to Sheffield in 1992 for further ministry involvement and eventual retirement. An open home, family joys, a devoted wife and mother, wise and gentle counselling, excellent cooking, great story-telling, a strong faith, devotion to Christ and faithfulness to the church, all characterise the life and ministry of Anna Evans.

The Sheffield Heeley Church of the Nazarene was full for the Service of Thanksgiving, held, following a family committal, on Monday, 13th October. The service was conducted by Rev Bruce Lloyd (sonin-law) and Rev Peter O’Brien, with members of the family taking part. SUNDAY SCHOOL CAMP

The North District Sunday School Camp was held 5th-11th July. Rev Nathan Payne reports. “Camp is one of those weeks that can change your life whether you are a camper or a leader, and once again that proved to be true. Ably led by Ruth Clarkson, almost 100 of us descended on the Auchengillan Outdoor Centre, to the North-West of Glasgow. The week was filled with worship, friendship, competition, food, fun, activities, water-fights - and not enough sleep! Our theme was “Fit for a King” which used sport to explore the life of Jesus the King and we reflected on how we can live our lives for Him. Camp 2015 has already been booked for 4th-10th July. Put the date in your diaries and plan to bring your children along.”

OLDHAM HOSTS ABCD

On Thursday, 21st August, an Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) training day was held in the Oldham Church of the Nazarene. The Oldham church is working in partnership with First Choice Homes (Oldham) and Forever Manchester (The Community Foundation for Greater Manchester), and the training was delivered by Gary Loftus and the day organised by Charmaine Hylton. DISTRICT MINISTRIES DAY

Over 150 people, from nearly 20 different churches, gathered at the Glasgow Kelvin College near Parkhead on Saturday 6th September for the North District Ministries Day. The theme for the day was ‘Inspire’, and the programme catered for all ages. Worship was led by the Perth team in the morning, and Jaime Lidstone (Perth) shared God’s Word with us as she recited the book of James; it was a stark reminder that there is real life and power in these ancient words. A number of other gifted speakers shared their expertise on a number of relevant topics in seminars and workshops throughout the day. It was particularly good to welcome Fran Brower (Manchester) who spoke about how we can better engage those with autism. Local churches also shared stories of recent blessings and creative ways that they are engaging in ministry to their communities. District SSDM Chairman, Rev Nathan Payne, reports, “It was great to be together again for the District Ministries Day this year. We met together, we sang together, we learnt together, we grew together, we ate together… we were inspired together. Thank you to everyone who made the day possible.” individuals who are passionate about making a difference in their community, and 12 delegates represented the Oldham Church of the Nazarene. The Gospel is about radical change and the principles of the Kingdom of God invert the principles of world based values. And ABCD builds on the assets that are already found in the community…the key is to begin to use what is already in the community. As a church we work at the heart of the community seeking to equip and empower individuals to live out the Gospel in a radical but practical manner. The outcome of the day was not only to discover the Guiding Principles for ABCD but also how we can use such principles to identify gifts, ministries and develop disciples of Jesus Christ.”

BEST GAMES EVER!

Not only were the XX Commonwealth Games, held in Glasgow and other venues in Scotland 23rd July-3rd August, a great success, but the “Parkhead Games” were a great success too. The Glasgow Parkhead church, located close to some of the major sporting venues, launched a two-week outreach mission which ran parallel with the Commonwealth Games, to involve the local community in a variety of activities and events based at the church and in the street. Local pastor, Dr Ian Wills estimates that over the two weeks there were 104 hours of activities featuring 41 different events, over 2000 cups of tea/coffee/juice were served, over 250 volunteers participated and well over 600 contacts were made. Over 15 different organisations were partners in the project including, Parkhead Youth Project, Playbusters, Message Trust, Urban Fox, Music/Arts groups, Cornerstone, Judo, the Fire Brigade…and others. For those at Parkhead Nazarene in Burgher Street it was the “Best Games Ever”! …with 'Clyde' – Commonwealth Games mascot
