Cape & Islands Workforce Investment Board Teacher Externship 2013 The Cape and Islands Workforce Investment Board is accepting applications for teacher externships. Selected participants will receive a $1,000 stipend for a 40 hours externship experience (up to 2 externships will be awarded.) Externships working with local STEM industries (Science Technology Engineering and Math) will be given priority. Who may apply? Any academic high school teacher employed in a Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard School District, representing any discipline may apply for an externship. What is a teacher externship and why participate in one? A teacher externship is a professional development opportunity for classroom teachers. Externships take place at any area organization that is able to provide a work experience that will positively impact your knowledge of your field and allow you to communicate to your classroom the practical application of what you teach. By developing curriculum based on the externship experience, teachers bring “real world” experience into the classroom. The goals of a teacher externship are to: 

Provide a paid professional development opportunity for teachers within a business or community agency. Teachers will incorporate this experience into relevant lesson plans for their core subject area.

Communicate a teacher’s practical knowledge of the world of work into the classroom and better articulate the needs of the local and global workforce. This will also enable teachers to better respond to student questions such as, “Why do I need to learn this?” and “How will I use this information in the future?”

Provide teachers an experience that will support the development of fresh ideas for their curriculum.

Create a more prepared workforce while creating a valuable connection between our schools and communities.

Where can externships take place? Teacher externship experiences can take place at any small or large business or organization located within the Cape and Islands that is able to provide a work experience that will positively impact a teacher’s knowledge of his/her field. When can the externship experience happen? Externships and the resulting lesson plans, reports must be completed between February 15, 2013 – June 21, 2013. What do teachers have to do to receive their stipend?

Teachers will be paid a stipend of $1,000 upon completion of their externship and with the submission of a log of activities, at least one lesson plan and a final report. The stipend will be issued upon the completion of the externship and submission of these documents. All documentation must be received no later than June 21, 2013. Teachers may be requested to make a 10-minute presentation to the Cape &Islands Workforce Investment Board & Youth Council during the Annual Meeting on June 26, 2013. How do I apply to participate? What is the deadline for submitting an application? Interested teachers can complete the Teacher Externship Application below Applications must be received by January 18, 2013. Who decides which externships are funded? Selection will take place by the Cape & Islands Workforce Investment Board Staff and Youth Council members. Externship examples  

A high school science teacher works with an architectural firm learning the application of the Solidworks program to incorporate its use and practice within her pre-engineering high school course. A high school business teacher spends a week (30 hours) visiting local company representatives of various industries to learn about the basic and job specific skills that are required within these areas. The information gained is incorporated within the business curriculum to provide students with the ‘early insight’ regarding the required skills for employment in these career pathway areas. A math teacher’s performs their externship at a nationally recognized retail store, and teaches an Integrated Math class that incorporates the application of fractions, decimals and percentages based on the real world activities at this store. An earth science teacher’s uses their externship at the Blue Hill Observatory and Forecast Center to teach 9th grade students on measuring and interpreting weather station data as well as build a backyard weather instrument. A science teacher partners with a local hospital to learn about its power generation system. He then demonstrates applications of technology and engineering in the classroom, corresponding to the Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks. Tips for Finding an Externship   

 

Identify businesses and organizations that interest you Contact your local Chamber of Commerce Make an internal contact with someone who works there and ask them to direct you to a human resources office or to a manager in the department you are interested in. If you do not know someone, someone else who you know may know someone in the organization. (In other words, this is an opportunity to engage your professional network.) Ask your high school’s guidance department or school to careers/business faculty, if they know of local employers who would be interested in sponsoring an externship. Contact CIWIB Director of Youth Services, Joan McDonald who may be able to assist you. Joan is a member of the Cape Cod Human Resources Association and the American Business Women’s Association Cape Cod Chapter (contact information is on application below).
