Headteacher Message

Dear Applicant, Thank you for showing an interest in the position 3rd in Charge - Science starting in September 2016. Science is an area of strength for the school with many of our students interested in careers in this field. The Barclay School is now rapidly moving forward on our exciting improvement journey. Our ambition is to make Barclay an outstanding school where all students achieve exceptional success. Our Ofsted Report in December 2013 notes that the school’s ambition: ‘is now shared by all senior leaders, who know what to do in order to bring about improvement and who are relentless, strategic and imaginative in their pursuit of it’. I am committed to appointing an ambitious and effective leader who can support this ambition. Our new 3rd in Charge Science will play a vital role in securing further progress towards our vision through a focus on high quality learning and teaching. We are fortunate to have a committed Science Department that prides itself on its friendly, cooperative and dedicated ethos. The successful applicant can look forward to joining a supportive and welcoming team. They will be able to provide our students with the right guidance and expertise regarding courses for the future and encourage extracurricular opportunities for both our students and for the rising stars from our federated junior school, Almond Hill. Our members of staff are committed, enthusiastic, supportive and knowledgeable. We are determined to give students the best possible experience of their subjects so that they enjoy the subjects and their work. Our aim is to support them in developing their skills so that they realise their potential in examinations but also become rounded individuals able to lead a successful and happy life through their learning. The Science Department is a cohesive team comprising 8 highly qualified and experienced professionals. Our last year’s examination results at both KS4 and KS5 have very much improved through training and development and we have revitalised our teaching and learning, used innovative practice, harnessed our monitoring systems and are looking forward to continue to achieve strong outcomes. 1. JOB OUTLINE 1 a) REASON JOB EXISTS The Third in Department Science will work with the Associate Assistant Headteacher (AAHT) Science and Technology and Second in Department to be responsible and accountable for:    

Quality of learning and teaching, continued development of the curriculum, assessment and progression and the continued development of Assessment and Feedback. The design and implementation of closing the gap intervention programme including tracking of vulnerable groups Development and tracking of whole school Literacy skills across all key stages To lead the Department for the transition from KS2 to KS3 Science.

1 b) MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY – working with the AAHT of Science and Technology and Second in Science Curriculum  To systematically review the overall programme of study to ensure that it meets that needs of particular cohorts  To work with colleagues to develop innovative and engaging schemes of work, lesson plans and related learning resources that accelerate student progress  To keep abreast of curriculum changes that impact on Science  To lead the monitoring of the delivery of the Science curriculum to ensure all students in vulnerable groups are able to access the curriculum, acting where issues arise and liaising with the SENCO and HoY Achievement  To, in conjunction with the AAHT, oversee the progress of all students, particularly of vulnerable groups and those entering Year 7 below the secondary ready threshold.  To systematically review and analyse data, tracking student progress, attending RAP meetings with the AAHT to support this  To monitor the implementation and impact of all waves of intervention, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Teaching and Learning  To monitor the quality of teaching and learning of the curriculum, with the AAHT  To coach and support teachers in the department to overcome barriers to good learning, with the AAHT  To lead and support the department in planning and delivering consistently good/outstanding lessons  To assist the AAHT in creating a positive ‘behaviour for learning’ within the department and intervening where necessary Assessment and Feedback  To monitor the quality of feedback offered to students, ensuring that it results in progression  To ensure that assessments are completed both accurately and at appropriate times  To lead on the continued development of assessment in Year 7/8. General  To present themselves as a model of great teaching in the department  To support and work with the AAHT in achieving an outstanding department  To model the values of the Faculty and school, acting in a highly professional manner at all times  To liaise and work positively with teachers, colleagues, parents and governors  Regularly collect and act on student, parent and teacher views of the department and AAHT curriculum  To contribute to the Faculty SEF and Development Plan  Provide resources and opportunities for students to take part in extra curricular activities 1 c) EQUALITIES Be aware of and support difference and ensure that the school’s equalities and diversity policies are followed. 1 d) HEALTH AND SAFETY Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection; health and safety; confidentiality; and data protection and report all concerns to an appropriate person. 1 e) CRIMINAL RECORDS BUREAU This post is classed as having a high degree of contact with children or vulnerable adults and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. An enhanced disclosure will be sought through the Criminal Records Bureau as part of Hertfordshire County Council’s pre-employment checks. 1 f) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The jobholder is required to contribute to and support the overall aims and ethos of the school. All staff are required to participate in training and other learning activities, and in performance management and development as required by the schools’ policies and practices.
