COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the theory and practice of music therapy. The course includes an overview of several different approaches to music therapy with various clinical populations. Aspects of the dynamics between therapist, client and music will be explored and experienced. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To develop knowledge regarding music therapy as a profession, including historical background, current state of the music therapy discipline, professional music therapy organizations, clinical settings served, client populations and education and certification requirements for music therapy practitioners. (AMTA Professional Competencies: 10.1, 10.2, 10.5, 17.1, 17.2, 17.14) 2. To begin to acquire knowledge about the role of music and the music therapist in the music therapy process. (AMTA Professional Competencies: 11.1 and 12.1) 3. To explore the musical self and investigate the human phenomenon connected with music. (AMTA Professional Competencies: 10.3, 10.4, 10.5) 4. To develop an understanding of the theoretical basis of music therapy. (AMTA Professional Competencies: 10.1, 10.5) 5. To develop knowledge of music therapy treatment strategies with various client populations. (AMTA Professional Competency: 10.2) 6. To begin to acquire knowledge of the professional literature and individuals who have made significant contributions to the field. (AMTA Professional Competencies: 10.1, 20.1) 7. To become aware of and begin to develop professional ethical standards maintained by those professionals holding the MT-BC credential. (AMTA Professional Competencies 17.1, 17.2, 17.3, 17.6, 17.8, 17.9) PRE-CLINICAL INTERNSHIP HOURS: 2.0 Hours (See Major Assignment #2)

MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS: from becoming overwhelmed with several assignments “due at the same time.” In this class, you are welcome to submit your assignments before the due date if you so choose. Assignment #1: Personal Journey with Music – 50 points Choose a piece of music that best represents a major time period in your life or a specific personal experience. The selection may be either instrumental or vocal, written and/or recorded by someone else, or a work of your own. While listening to this selection create a mandala. (An explanation of the mandala and examples of such will be given in class.) Write a brief narrative [typed, font size 12, Times/Times New Roman, 1-2 pages, double-spaced; include the complete title of the work, artist/composer] of your personal experience with this specific selection and explain why you have selected it for this assignment. Write about your experience of drawing the mandala, and what the images therein represent to you. As time permits, students will be invited to share their “Personal Journey” and accompanying mandala with the class. Please remember to bring your mandala to class with you on the due date. The class experiential for this assignment is September 21st and 23rd, 2015. For grading purposes, please take a picture of your mandala and submit it with your typed written narrative and an MP3 file or link to a legal copy of the music you selected via Canvas. If your photograph doesn’t allow the instructor to see the detail you have created on the mandala, please submit the physical copy of your mandala separately and make sure it is labeled with your name. Assignment #2: Clinical Observation – 50 points; 2.0 Pre-Clinical Internship Hours AMTA requires undergraduate music therapy students to accumulate 180 preclinical internship hours during the course of their academic program. This assignment is part of that requirement. Students will be given access to video recordings of several music therapy sessions to observe. Each student will observe at least one of the first two USU music therapy student video sessions (Sunshine Terrace and the USU Developmental Skills Center) and then choose at least 2 of the MT-BC video clips, which are shorter. They will then submit a two-page narrative (anecdotal) report describing their personal observations and reactions to the selected sessions. The video files are located on Canvas under the “Pages” tab, then “Clinical Observation Media Links.”

The following points should be addressed in your paper: 1) Describe the clients and clinical setting(s). What were the presenting needs of the client(s)? What client strengths did you notice? 2) What clinical goals were being addressed? 3) Describe in detail the type of musical activities/interventions being used and how these interventions addressed the problems and goals indicated. 4) What was the role of the music in the session? (i.e., to teach concepts, to serve as a container for relaxation, to energize the clients, to provide a means of reality-orientation, to serve as a structural prompt, etc.?) 5) What types of interventions or techniques were used? 6) If observed, how did the therapist(s) or student(s) achieve closure for the session? 7) Discuss your perception of client response to the session. 8) How does observing this session increase your understanding of the role of the therapist, client, and the music? This report is due on or before Oct. 19th, 2015. Your total viewing time should be between 45-60 minutes. Assignment #3: Music Therapy Fact Sheet – 50 points Although established in the United States as a recognized allied health professional in 1950, many people still remain uninformed as to what music therapy is. For this assignment, students will prepare a bulleted, one page “Fact Sheet” defining music therapy. This fact sheet should be thought of as a one-page summary of the profession that a reader who knows nothing about music therapy could easily come away from reading with a basic understanding of the profession. Students should synthesis these presented facts from professional journals and related music therapy texts or materials read, websites related to music therapy, and acquired knowledge. The fact sheet is presented on a single page and must include 10 facts defining music therapy. The fact sheet should be visually appealing and easy to understand and read. To see an example of a fact sheet, visit the American Music Therapy Association website (musictherapy.org) or other websites hosting information related to music therapy. An assignment rubric can be found on Canvas. This assignment is part of an assignment in MUSC 4330: Clinical and Professional Issues, which music therapy students take during their last semester in the Music Therapy Program. With this in mind, it is best if students create a quality product and make sure that they save it for future use. Please bring a printed copy of your “Music Therapy Fact Sheet” to class on or before November 4th, 2015. Assignment #4: Music Therapy Report – 150 Points Each student will select an aspect of music therapy that interests them. This could be a music therapy technique-- such as improvisation, a particular population served-- such as children with Asperger’s, or some other element of music therapy practice/theory.

Students will research the specifics of a topic of their interest, using no less than 5 sources. A course textbook will be used as one of the sources and the remaining 4 sources must be taken from articles contained in either the Journal of Music Therapy or Music Therapy Perspectives. Scholarly journals are available in the Merrill-Cazier Library on the 2nd floor. AMTA also markets a Flash Drive containing all scholarly publications from our professional journals from 1950--2008. (Student members of AMTA may purchase this at a substantial discount!!) The earlier CD’s available from AMTA (which included publications only until 2003) is available in the Music Therapy Student Resource Room (219) and on reserve in the Merrill-Cazier Library and can be checked out for a 3-hour-loan period.) Check-points for this assignment throughout the semester will be made. The following are due dates associated with this assignment completion. Failure to complete these check-point assignments will result in a deduction to your participation grade, but will not factor into the final grade for this assignment. The check-points are as follows: Research Paper Topic: DUE Oct. 7th, 2015 Annotated bibliography on 2 articles: DUE Oct. 28TH, 2015 Annotated bibliography on 2 articles: DUE Nov.11TH, 2015 The grading criteria for this report will be based on content, adherence to APA format, and the professional quality of the work. Please limit your paper to no more than 5 pages, double-spaced, 12-font. A grading rubric can be found on Canvas. Please remember that plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any reference to opinions and facts expressed in your sources must be cited in APA format in the body of your report. This report is due on Nov. 30th, 2015. You will be asked to make a verbal summary of your report to the class on either Dec. 7th or Dec.9th. Assignment #5: Attendance & Class Participation Assignments: 200 points Students are expected to be in class and be prepared for discussion, having read the assigned reading material beforehand. Students will be asked to verbally share comprehension of the reading material in class. Points are awarded based on preparation to contribute meaningfully to the discussion as well as attendance. Assignment #6: Final Exam in 2 Sections: 200 points Students will complete the final exam in 2 sections. Testing on the first section will take place on Oct. 19th, 2015 in class. Testing on the second section will take place on Dec. 2nd, 2015, also in class. If students are satisfied with their scores achieved on these two exam section attempts, they may opt out of the repeat exam given during finals week. If, however, they would like to score better on either or both of the exam sections, they may choose to re-take on Dec. 14th, 2015.
