Welcome to C-Tools Plus About C-Tools Plus C-Tools Plus is multi-faceted software that has been created for use with any interactive whiteboard.

Navigating C-Tools Plus This topic gives you an overview of how to move around C-Tools Plus and to set up C-Tools Plus to suit your working styles and includes:   

When you first open C-Tools Plus you see the main C-Tools Plus window:

To hide or close panes: You may wish to hide panes to give you a larger working area. There are two ways of doing this: by closing the panes completely or making the panes appear as tabs on your screen.  

Click the Auto hide button on the Controls or Thumbnail title bar. The pane closes and a tab appears at the side or bottom of the window with the name of the pane.

Or  Click the Close button on the Controls or Thumbnail title bar.  The pane completely closes. To display the Controls lists fully:  Click on the navigation bar  The list is fully displayed.

Displaying more options

If you right-click with your mouse button when moving around C-Tools Plus other menus display enabling you to choose further options. The graphic below shows the menu that displays when you right-click on a shape object: 6

Please note that for Delivery Options the default settings are:  

Movable On Delivery. Editable On Delivery.

Customising C-Tools Plus The C-Tools Plus software can be customised from the “Show Options” · Click Tools | Show Options on the main toolbar. · The Options window opens.

Default Language: Once you have installed C-Tools Plus you can change the language at any time.

· Click onto the Default language box and a drop-down box will appear beside the language name. · C-Tools Plus updates with the new language setting. Show Grid:   

Click onto the Show Grid and a drop-down will appear with the option ‘Yes’ & ‘No’. Select ‘Yes’ and then OK button from the window. It will show the grid on any newly added page into the lesson book. Selecting ‘No’ from the drop-down will not show the grid on any newly added page into the lesson book.

Major Grid Size: 

Major Grid Size drop down will show the grid size option as 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25. Selecting any of these options will show the grid size accordingly on the new page.

Set background colour:    

Click onto the small square corresponding to the set background colour field. It will show the color chart. Select your color and click on OK button. This will change the background color of all existing pages and new pages created.

Canvas Width and Canvas Height: This setting is used to set the working canvas area. The initial setting is taken from the PC resolution that c-tools plus has been installed on. Print Orientation: The Print Orientation can be set to Portrait or Landscape. Preferred Subject Folder: Preferred Subject Folder enables the user to save the lesson into the selected location.    

Click onto the small square corresponding to the Preferred Subject Folder field. This will open the Browse For Folder window. Select the location and click on OK button. It will show the selected location path in the preferred subject folder field. Click on OK button of the Options window.

Folder Containing Clipart: Change the clipart containing folder. Pages per Sheet (1-12): Set how many lesson pages will be printed per sheet. Remember Toolbar and Windows settings: Remember Toolbar and Windows settings enable the user to retain the annotation tools (width and color) and the positioning of the thumbnails & controls pane settings. When this option is set to TRUE, the settings at the time of exiting C-Tools Plus will be saved. Example:  Select any annotation tool (pencil, brush, highlighter, block highlighter) and set the width and color as required  Make annotation over the canvas.  From Tools | Show Options | Remember Toolbar and Windows settings drop down select True and click on OK button of the window.  Now the next time C-Tools Plus is exited or at the time of creating new lesson, the user will have the same Toolbar settings as set earlier.

Similarly for the windows settings we need to perform the same action –   

Re-position the thumbnails and controls pane. From Tools | Show Options | Remember Toolbar and Windows settings drop down select True and click on OK button of the window. Now the next time on shutdown and relaunch of the application or at the time of creating new lesson the user will have the same Windows settings as set earlier.

Enhancing the look of your lessons Changing Colour of Shapes You selected the colour of the shape when you first inserted it into your lesson. Later on you may wish to change the colour. You can change the outline colour of any shape and the fill colour. Here's how: To change colour of Shapes 

Click on the shape whose colour you want to change



From the toolbar or right click context menu select the outline colour of the shape from the last drop down colour cob.



Select the fill colour of the shape from the first drop down colour cob.



The shape changes colour as soon as you click on a new colour.

You can also change the opacity of the shape (i.e. make it transparent) from the right click context menu on the shape.

Editing objects Anything that you insert into your lesson book can be edited in various ways. You can: Moving objects to a different place in the lesson book window Resize objects Rotate objects Flip objects Note: You can edit your lesson in full screen preview mode to ensure your lesson looks as you want it to look when you deliver it. Click the Full Screen icon

on the toolbar to do this.

To move an object: Click on the object you want to move. Hold the left mouse button down and drag-and-drop the object in its new position. 11

To resize an object: Click on the object you want to resize. The object now has squares around it.

Click on any of the squares and drag the object until you achieve the size you want To rotate an object: Click on the object you want to resize. The object now has a square above it [see above]. Click on the square and move the mouse with the button depressed. The object will rotate up to 360 degrees around its center point To flip an object: Click Edit | Transform. Or Right-click and select Transform. Select one of the options. The object can be flipped horizontally or vertically, and can also be rotated 90 degrees clockwise or anti-clockwise. The object redisplays according to your selection.

Formatting Pages You can make your lessons appear consistent by use of the same background. You could use different backgrounds to denote different lessons or some lessons may be enhanced by use of a background picture. This topic explains how to: Set a background colour Set a background picture To set a background colour:  

Select Format |Current Page |Set Background Colour It will show the colour chart drop down.



Click on the colour you require or switch to Web/System tab to choose the colour of your choice. The colour appears in the lesson book as the background.



Note: to set the same background colour for all pages in your lesson book select Format | All Pages in step 1 above. To set a background picture:    

Select Format |Current Page |Background Picture. Browse for the picture (File Type - *.jpg, *.png, *.gif, *.bmp) you require on your computer. Click the Open button when you have selected the picture you want. The picture appears in the lesson book as the background.

Note: to set the same background picture for all pages in your lesson book select Format | All Pages in step 1 above.

Inserting pictures C-Tools Plus offers thousands of clipart images but you may have images of your own that you want to insert in lesson books. These could be photographs or other pictures that you have stored on your computer. To insert a picture:      

Click Insert |Picture. The Load File window opens. Select the location of the picture on your computer. Select the picture (File Type - *.jpg, *.png, *.gif, *.bmp). Click the Open button. The picture opens in your lesson book

Inserting Shapes C-Tools Plus enables you to add shapes to your lesson. These shapes can be filled with colour or blank (i.e. outline only). To insert a shape: 

Select either Filled Shapes or Unfilled Shapes.



Click the drop down list button next to the shape icon

 

Click on the shape you want from the menu. The shape you selected appears in the lesson book. 14

Manipulating Images C-Tools Plus enables you to change elements of images and shapes once inserted.

To re-size an image or shape keeping its original context:  

Click on image to bring up grab handles Hold cursor over a corner grabhandle and move outwards (to enlarge) or inwards (to decrease)

To rotate an image:  

Hold cursor over the small square above the object Rotate as required to 360 degrees

Using the Crop Tools The crop tool can be used on images or text. Bring in the image required Click on the Crop Tool icon. Highlight the area to be cropped. The cropped area will appear on the page. Repeat as often as required.

C-Tools Plus controls Backgrounds About backgrounds C-Tools Plus incorporates many educational backgrounds / diagrams which can be used within the lesson book. These can be selected with or without the accompanying text; they are denoted as either labelled or plain. Here are a few examples of the backgrounds you can choose from.

Inserting backgrounds C-Tools Plus has many backgrounds you can insert into a lesson, either labelled or not. Here's how to do that. To insert a background:

 

Click on the navigation bar The list is fully displayed.

Double click either Labelled or Plain. The various backgrounds are shown in alphabetical order. Click the background you require and drag-and-drop it on to the lesson page. Note: Double-clicking on a background makes it expand to fit the whole page of the lesson. Once the background is in the lesson book you can change the size of the background by clicking on the squares and dragging. You can move the graphic by clicking on it, holding the left mouse button down and dragging the graphic to a new position. See the example below of the Clouds –

Note: If you right-click on the background another menu options displays. 18

ClipArt Using C-Tools Plus ClipArt C-Tools Plus ClipArt has several graphics for Primary and Secondary Schools.

To insert a piece of ClipArt:  

Click on the navigation bar Double click on the C-Tools Plus ClipArt link.



The C-Tools Plus ClipArt Viewer opens.

Double click on the item thumbnail of your choice from the C-Tools Plus ClipArt Viewer. It will appear into the lesson book.

Once the clipart is in the lesson book you can click on it using the left mouse button. You can also see the outline of the clipart enabling you to change the size of it by clicking on the squares and dragging. You can move the clipart by clicking on it, holding the left mouse button down and dragging the clipart to a new position. If you right-click on the clipart another menu options displays.

Lessons About drawing tools Although you may already have completed creating a lesson, in some cases you may wish to add to the lesson whilst teaching it. C-Tools Plus enables you to do this by using the Drawing Tools toolbar in the Deliver Lesson window.

The drawing tools from left to right enable you to do the following: 21

The file tools from left to right enable you to do the following:    

New will open the new lesson Open will open any previously saved lesson Save any changes you make while delivering the lesson Use print to print the selected or whole page of the lesson

The standard tools from left to right enable you to do the following:  

New Page will add the new page into the lesson Use duplicate object to duplicate the object if any into the lesson 22

Use cut to cut the object/s Use Paste to paste the cut objects into the current or some other page of the lesson Undo any changes you make Re-do any changes you make Use insert image to insert the image of file type (*.jpg, *.gif, *png, *.bmp) into the lesson Use C-Tools Plus ClipArt to insert the ClipArt into the lesson page

Creating a lesson plan In order to help with your planning you may find it helpful to create a lesson plan. Here's how to do that with C-Tools Plus. To create a lesson plan:   

Click the View Lesson Plan icon from the View menu (View>View Lesson Plan). The Lesson Plan Details window opens. Enter the information required. See the graphic below:

Click on the Page 2, 3 & 4 tabs to open other windows where you can enter more lesson details. Click the OK button in the bottom-right of the window when you have finished. Click File |Save to save your lesson plan. Tip: You can return to your lesson plan at any time by clicking the view lesson plan from the View menu (View>View Lesson Plan) as described in the steps above.

To lock lesson plan Lock lesson plan enables the user to lock thelesson plan details by selecting the checkbox “Lock Lesson Plan” at the top-right from Lesson Plan Details window. It will not allow the further editing of the lesson plan details when this option is checked. To edit the lesson plan details, de-select the Lock Lesson Plan option.

Creating a new lesson To create a new lesson:      

Click File/New A new lesson book is created. Click File |Save As. The Save As window opens. Enter a file name in the File name field and click the Save button. Your new lesson book is saved and you can begin entering information to your lesson.

Delivering a lesson After preparing your lesson you can switch to the deliver mode to see how your lesson will be seen by your students. To deliver a lesson:

  

Click the Deliver Lesson icon on the toolbar. The Deliver Lesson window opens enabling you to teach your lesson. Before delivering a lesson you can select delivery options by right-clicking on an object and selecting Delivery Options. These enable you to choose for example: Movable On Delivery or Editable On Delivery.

Opening an existing lesson book To open an existing lesson book:     

Click File |Open. The Open window opens. Browse to the required lesson. Click on the lesson you want and click the Open button. The lesson you want opens in C-Tools Plus.

Maps Inserting maps C-Tools Plus has various maps that you can use as part of your lessons. To insert a map: 

Click on the navigation bar

Double click the map you require or drag-and-drop it on to the lesson page.

Once the map is in the lesson book you can click on it using the left mouse button. You can also see the outline of the map enabling you to change the size of it by clicking on the squares and dragging. You can move the map by clicking on it, holding the left mouse button down and dragging the graphic to a new position. If you right-click on the map another menu options displays. See the example below of a map with all the options showing.

My folder About My Folder You can use My Folder as somewhere to keep your work so you can access it quickly and easily. 

Click on the navigation bar

To use New Folder: 

Double click on the new folder to create any new folder.

Newly created folder will appear under the new folder. Right click on the newly created folder to add any new folder, folder/files, delete or rename.

To use Add File:   

Double click on add file to add any type of files. Select File To Add window opens to select the file you want to open and click Open. Double click on the added file items. Note: If the selected file is of Image type then it will paste the item as an object onto the canvas else it will open in its own environment.



You can also delete/rename the added file name from the right click options.

To use Add Folder: 

Double click on the add folder to browse for the folder to add.



It will open the Browse For Folder window.



Select the folder you want to choose and click on OK button. 30



Double clicking on added folder will expand the folder showing all the items present in it.



Double clicking on the item. Note: If the selected file is of Image type then it will paste the item as an object onto the canvas else it will open in its own environment.



You can also delete/rename the added folder/file name from the right click options.

Online resources Adding new websites The lesson book drawing area can also be turned into a web browser for navigating the web. You can use any of the links provided or add your own. To add a new website:   

Click on the navigation bar Right click within the list area of resources. An option box opens.

Click the Add New Website link. The Web link window opens.

   

Enter a title for the resources in the Title field. Enter the web site address in the field below the title. Click the Accept button. The web site is now added to the list of resources.

Quick Media About Quick Media The Quick Media section has many templates, some of which are interactive. There are different types of graph paper, clocks, shaped paper, lined paper, gradient and number square. There are also various wizards associated with these templates which enable you to change the look of them and what they do. You can even use these features as a background to your lesson book. Here are some examples:

Using Quick Media To use Quick Media:  

Click on the navigation bar from the Controls pane. Double click the Quick Media feature that you want to use from the list.

The wizard window associated with whichever Quick Media feature you have chosen opens. Select the required options from the wizard. If required, click the OK button to set the Quick Media feature as a background to your lesson

Additional Information on Clock Quick Media Functionality The Clock feature has an option to add custom sounds (MP3 or WAV file) to play as the alarm when the countdown has ended.

To use Custom Sounds in the Clock: Step1  

Double click on the Clock from the Quick Media. From the Controls toolbar, click on the button – Browse for custom sounds.

   

The Select Sound window opens. Select the location of the MP3 file on your computer. Select the custom sound file. Click the Open button.

Step2   

From the Clock Options within the Clock select Alarm Sounds | Custom. Next select Clock Type | Countdown. Start Countdown button will appear at the top right corner of the Clock page.

Step3  

Set time in the clock. Click on the button Start Countdown.

To use Set As Default Option in Graph Paper, Shaped Paper, Number Square and Lined Paper: Set As Default option enables the user to retain the same settings, that has been set as default for the next time you open the wizard.  

 

Double click on any of the above mentioned Quick Media items (For Example: Shaped Paper). Select the options from the wizard as per your requirement.

Click on Set As Default. Clicking over the OK button will set the shaped paper as a background into the selected page only of the lesson book and not on the newly added page but on Full Screen and Delivered Lesson Screen it will show the shaped paper on every new page.

Screen captures How to capture a screen C-Tools Plus enables you to capture whole or part of a screen which you can insert quickly and easily into your lesson book. To capture screens: 1. Click on the window you want to capture. Note: C-Tools Plus captures the last window you were using so step 1 is only necessary if you have more than one window open on your desktop. 2. Select Insert | Screen capture and one of the four options:   

Whole Screen – enables you to capture a whole screen. Rectangular Area – enables you to select a rectangular area from the screen you wish to capture. Freehand Area – enables you to select an area the size and shape you require by using a free-hand drawing tool.

Depending upon which option you selected you need to do the following (click the links for step by step guidance): 3. Whole Screen C-Tools Plus automatically inserts a whole screen capture into your lesson book. 4. Rectangular Area C-Tools Plus displays the screen you want to capture. 1. Move your mouse pointer to the area you want to select. 2. Click and hold with your left mouse button. 3. Drag over the area you require. Let go of the mouse button when you have selected your area. C-Tools Plus inserts this into your lesson book. 38

5. Freehand Area C-Tools Plus displays the screen you want to capture. 1. Move your mouse pointer to the area you want to select. 2. Click and hold with your left mouse button. 3. Drag over the area you require. Let go of the mouse button when you have selected your area. C-Tools Plus inserts this into your lesson book.

C-Tools Plus tools About C-Tools Plus Remote The C-Tools Plus Remote contains many functions that enable you to work with an interactive whiteboard:

Launching C-Tools Plus Remote To launch C-Tools Plus Remote:  

Click the C-Tools Plus Remote icon on the toolbar. The C-Tools Plus Remote launches.

Using C-Tools Plus Remote Moving your mouse over the buttons on the C-Tools Plus Remote enables pop-up labels to open showing you what each of the buttons does. Simply click on them to do any of the following:

The Start/Return to Lesson Book takes you back to the lesson book window.

Annotate over Desktop button launches the annotation tools.

The Internet browser button launches your browser.

Keyboard launches the on screen keyboard.

Calculator launches the C-Tools Plus Calculator.

The screen captures button enables you to capture screen shots.

The Clipart button displays a shortcut to the Clipart application.

The My Folder button displays a shortcut to your personal C-Tools Plus folder.

The Quick Media button displays the drop down list to access the quick media items and their functionality.

Transparency You can make the C-Tools Plus transparent so that it is less obtrusive when on the screen. To do so, scroll the scrollbar at the bottom of the C-Tool Plus Remote. Moving the slider from right to left will gradually fade the C-Tool Plus Remote until it is almost invisible.

How to use annotation tools from the C-Tools Plus Remote:



From the C-Tools Plus Remote, select the icon Annotate over Desktop. It will navigate the user to the Drawing Board, where he wishes to use the annotation tools over the Desktop.



To save the page into the lesson book click on the icon ‘Save Page and Continue’ from Tools toolbar.



To exit click on the icon ‘Start/Return to the Lesson Book’ Remote toolbar.

Please Note – All the pages will be saved into the lesson book as a new page.

How to use quick media from the C-Tools Plus Remote:

 

From the C-Tools Plus Remote, click on the drop down arrow button of Quick Media It will display the quick media items in the list.



Selecting any of the items from the list open up the selected wizard and the user wishes to use it similarly as he use it from the Controls in the main interface of C-Tools Plus application.



To exit click on the icon ‘Start/Return to the Lesson Book’ Remote toolbar.

Please Note – At a time only one item from the quick media of remote toolbar could be saved into the lesson book. It will save as the background in the same page which had been selected before launching of the C-Tools Plus Remote.

Launching the calculator To launch C-Tools Plus calculator:

 

Click the drop down button of the calculator icon on the toolbar. Select the type of calculator you want from the drop down menu.



It will launch the Calculator.

Launching the On Screen Keyboard The C-Tools Plus on screen keyboard is useful for entering information and text in applications when using an interactive whiteboard. To launch C-Tools Plus on screen keyboard:

 

Click the keyboard icon on the toolbar. The C-Tools Plus keyboard launches. Use it as you would any other keyboard.

Using Audio C-Tools Plus enables you to incorporate audio clips into your lessons. To insert an audio clip:

   

Click Insert |Audio clip Browse for the location of the clip and click the Open button. The audio clip is inserted into your lesson book. Click on the play button to listen to it.

Using Hyperlinks C-Tools Plus enables you to make any object a hyperlink. You can link to: websites, lesson book slides or to a file on your computer. To insert a link:   

Right click on the object you want to attach a link to. Click Link. The Link dialog box opens.

    

Select the Link Type from the drop-down list. Browse for the web address, file location or slide. Insert the web address or file location. Click the Accept button. When you deliver your lesson and click on the object the web site, file or slide open.

Using Internet Browser To browse the Internet you can use the Internet Browser or you can click on any of the links in your Online Resources. To use Internet Browser:

 

Click the Internet Browser icon The Internet Browser launches.

Using the Calculator Two types of calculator are provided – C-Tools Plus calculator and the Operating system calculator. The C-Tools Plus calculator allows the completed, entered calculations to be dragged to the canvas from the area beneath the keys.

Click the pencil tool icon on the toolbar. Pencil tool appears in the lesson book. Select the required option from the Drawing Tools like Outline Colour, Pen width. Click with the left mouse button and draw onto the lesson book.

Using the Brush Tool To use the brush tool:

   

Click the brush tool icon on the toolbar. Brush tool appears in the lesson book. Select the required option from the Drawing Tools like Outline Colour, Brush width. Click with the left mouse button and draw onto the lesson book.

Using the Highlighter Tools C-Tools Plus provides two types of highlighter tool: the highlighter pen and the block highlighter pen, which draws a square around an object. To use the highlighter pen:

   

Click the highlighter pen icon on the toolbar. Highlighter pen appears in the lesson book. Select the required option from the Drawing Tools like Outline Color, Highlighter width. Left click on the mouse button and draw over whatever you want to be highlighted.

To use the block highlighter pen:

   

Click the block highlighter pen icon on the toolbar. Block Highlighter pen appears in the lesson book. Select the required option from the Drawing Tools like Fill Color, Outline Color. Click and drag over the area you want to highlight.

Using Eraser Use the eraser as you would any board rubber - to rub out anything you don't need anymore. The Eraser can rub out anything that you have drawn in the main window, though it won't work on text or graphics (see below). To use the eraser:

   

Click the eraser icon on the toolbar. The eraser appears in the lesson book. Select the thickness of the eraser from the drop-down list of Eraser Width. Left-click with the mouse button and move the eraser over what you want to rub out.

Note: The eraser tool will NOT rub out text, clipart or other imported images.

Using Clear Objects To use the clear objects: 

Annotate or drop any object over the canvas.



Click the drop down button of the Clear Object icon



Select the option you want from the drop down menu.



It will clear the objects from the page as per the selected option in one go.

Using the Fill Color You can use the Fill tool to fill in shapes or background colour. To use the fill color: 

Select the object, say yellow triangle on the canvas.

   

Click the drop down button of Fill color icon on the toolbar. It will show the colour chart drop down. Select the colour you require from the drop down colour chart. It will change the yellow triangle with the colour of your choice. For example: If you have a yellow triangle but you want to change it to red, use fill color to change the colour quickly and easily.

Using the Spotlight Tool The spotlight tool lets you focus on different areas of a lesson while blanking out the rest of the lesson book.

By clicking on the drop-down options in the SpotLight Option box you can select the shape and size of the spotlight. You can also magnify the area you are looking at, and change the brightness of the background. Above we can see the spotlight on a desktop. 48

Using the Text Tool The text tool enables you to annotate your lessons. You can change the colour of the text, change the font size, change the font, as well as using bold, italics or underlining. To use the text tool:

 

Click the Text Tool icon on the toolbar. It will open the Edit Text window.



Select the font, font size, font colour and any other options from the text toolbar.



The text inside the edit text window can be:  Emboldened  Underlined  Italicised  Changed to a different font  Changed to a different font size  Changed to a different colour

 

After the text has been entered into the edit text window, click over the OK button. The text will appear onto the canvas with the outlines. 49

From this you will be able to increase the size of the font. You can also rotate the textbox through 360 degrees as required. Double clicking over the text will bring the edit text window back to its original position, allowing you to make further changes. Once the text is in the lesson book you can click on it using the left mouse button to see the outline of the text object. You can move the text by clicking on it, holding the left mouse button down and dragging the textbox to a new position. If you right click on the text, another menu options displays.

Using Video Clips C-Tools Plus enables you to incorporate video clips into your lessons. You can also have a live video source enabling you to have a live web cam link up. To insert a video clip:    

Click Insert |Video Clip. Browse for the location of the clip and click the Open button. The video clip is inserted in your lesson book. Click on the play button to watch the clip.
