Girrakool Picnic Area Brisbane Water National Park

Getting There: A car is necessary for this one. From Kariong, turn into Wisemans Ferry Rd, and follow the Pacific Highway towards Sydney. Just past the turn off to the Reptile Park, on the left, is the sign to Girrakool. Description: The Mooney Nature Trail begins near the southern end of the car park. This walk has the advantage of taking walkers from a woodland, to a rainforest gully, to a heath within about 300m. There is an alternative, easier and shorter walk on the northern side of the car. Distance: The full circuit of 6.5km, follows the deep gorge of Piles Creek. Duration: About 4 hours is recommended unless you walk the shorter section. Degree of Difficulty: Medium. The walk involves some medium-grade climbing. However, it can be a very much easier, shorter (about 2½-3km) walk which still provides a wonderful display of local flora, if you turn back when the track across the heath begins to drop sharply from a rock-shelf, down to Piles Creek. This way you follow the same track back to the car park (though there is an alternative, interesting loop to the right, just after you re-cross the creek with the stepping posts). Best Time: June – October This is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year. Banksias begin flowering in autumn and the beauty of this area has a lot to do with trees, rock formations and stunning views. Notes: Gas barbeques are available in one of the picnic areas. A parking fee is applicable. PLANTS FOUND ON BUSHWALKS IN GIRRAKOOL, BWNP BOTANICAL NAME

Thommo's Loop Brisbane Water National Park

Getting There: This circular track is accessed from Woy Woy Rd through a gate about 200m south of Staples Lookout ( a convenient place to park your car). Description: The track, a fire trail, follows a ridge overlooking the valleys of the Kariong and Myron Brooks. The plant communities change several times as you complete the circle. An interesting add-on is a visit to a very pretty waterfall. You will find the track on your right about 1km along. It is sign-posted as part of the Great North Walk, which joins Thommo’s at this point. Back on the main track, after a short climb on to a rocky outcrop, keep veering around to the left. Do not follow the Great North Walk when it veers off to the right. Continue to a T intersection with the track in from the quarry. Turn left and leave the park via a gate into the quarry . Turn right and walk through the quarry back to Woy Woy Rd, then turn left and proceed back along the road to Staples Lookout. Distance: About 4km Duration: 2-3 hours – an extra hour if you decide to visit the waterfall. Degree of Difficulty: Medium – easy, with a fairly steep climb if you decide to visit the waterfall. Best Time: June- November for an incredible variety of heath and woodland flowers. Notes: Most walkers only walk as far as the turn off to the waterfall, then return to Staples lookout entry. Warrah Reserve Brisbane Water National Park

Getting There: There is a bus service to Patonga but driving there would be much easier. From Woy Woy or Umina, follow the signs to Patonga. About 2km past the turn-off to Pearl Beach, you will see a sign on the left, to the Warrah Lookout. Follow the unsealed road to the car park. Alternatively, you can continue along Patonga Drive for about 700m. past the unsealed side road and start the walk from a gate on the left. There is room to park a few cars. Description: From the Warrah Trig there are extensive views across Broken Bay and the entrance to Brisbane Water. Wellbuilt sandstone steps lead down to the walking track, which follows the escarpment along the Hawkesbury River. From a magnificent sandstone heath, the track descends through woodland to the Crommelin Native Arboretum in Pearl Beach. Distance: From Warrah Trig it is about 2km to the Pearl Beach Arboretum and 2.5km to Pearl Beach. Duration: A leisurely 3 to 4 hours return. Degree of Difficulty: Easy. If you can leave a vehicle at the Pearl Beach end, this is an almost flat, wide, downhill stroll. If you walk the return trip, naturally you will have some up hill work but the gradient is not demanding. Best Time: June-November for an incredible variety of flowers, or any time for the wonderful views across Broken Bay to Palm Beach and up the Hawkesbury River to Patonga and beyond. Notes: The road shown on the map which ends at “P” is often used by walkers to go to the lookout and return via the loop shown. It is a recommended short walk. Box Head Bouddi National Park Getting There: Follow Avoca Drive to the roundabout just past the Kincumber Public School, then turn right into Empire Bay Drive. Continue along Empire Bay Drive for about 5kms then turn left into Wards Hill Rd. Drive up the hill until you reach the T intersection where you turn right into Scenic Rd. At the next main intersection don't go right and down to Killcare Rd, don't go left down Beach Rd but drive straight ahead a short distance past Grandview Cres. on the left, next is Hawke Head Drive also on the left. This leads into Bouddi National Park. The road is fairly rough, though usually negotiable with care in a sedan so you may prefer to park in Grandview Cres and walk up onto the ridge. Description: The track follows the top of Bouddi Ridge along the peninsula towards Box Head. On the first part of the trail there are views on both sides. To the right you can see Brisbane Water and to the left the Pacific Ocean. From a low woodland you will pass into an exposed heathland dominated by Allocasuarina distyla. On the left you will see a small carpark from which a narrow track leads to a rocky lookout. This provides a good view of Tallow Beach. The main track continues to a locked gate, where there is room to park. From there you proceed on foot through the gate. A left fork takes you down to Tallow Beach, straight on leads out to the Boulders. The track narrows and becomes rockier, with great views across Broken Bay on your right, and, a little later, equally good ones on your left of Little Tallow Beach and the coastline. When you come out of the woodland onto a big rocky outcrop, you have reached The Boulders. It is possible to continue to Box Head, but the track is sometimes rather overgrown. Distance: About 4km return. Box Head would add 1km. Duration: Allow 2 – 4hrs. Degree of Difficulty: Easy. Medium to easy if you walk from Grandview Cresc. Until you reach the gate, it is a road. The rest is fairly level with a few rocky steps. Best Time: Winter to late Spring for the flowers, and any time for the views. PLANTS FOUND ON BUSHWALKS IN BOX HEAD, BOUDDI NP BOTANICAL NAME

Maitland Bay Track Bouddi National Park

GettingThere: Follow Avoca Drive to the roundabout just past the Kincumber Public School and turn right into Empire Bay Drive. At the next roundabout turn left into The Scenic Road and follow it to the Maitland Bay Car Park and Information Centre (9.8km from the Avoca Drive / Empire Bay roundabout). The track from here gives access to three beautiful walks – Bullimah Lookout, Maitland Bay and Putty Beach. Description: From the car park, follow the track down through woodland until you come to a side trail on your right leading to Bullimah Lookout. On the way down go out onto rocky outcrops on your left for spectacular views of Maitland Bay. The Bullimah Track narrows and winds past huge rocks, amazingly gnarled Red Gums (Angophora costata), and eventually to rock shelves with stunning views of the coast. Distance: From the car park to Bullimah Lookout, about 2½ km return. Duration: Allow 1½ – 2½ hrs. Degree of Difficulty: Easy – Wide, shallow steps descend from the car park to the narrower Bullimah Track, which apart from a very short, rocky stretch on Bullimah Spur has very gentle grades. The National Parks & Wildlife Service have constructed a boardwalk on much of the track from Putty Beach to Bullimah Beach. Best Time: All year round. Notes: Alternatively you can walk from the picnic area on Putty Beach to Bullimah Beach or Gerrin Head and return. PLANTS FOUND ON BUSHWALKS AROUND MAITLAND BAY – BOUDDI NP BOTANICAL NAME

Bombi Moor Bouddi National Park Getting There: Follow Avoca Drive to the roundabout just past the Kincumber Public School, then turn right into Empire Bay Drive, left at the next roundabout then follow The Scenic Drive and continue past the MacMasters Beach turn off. About 1 km further on, turn left into Graham Drive - there is a sign for Little Beach. Go to the car park at the end of Graham Drive. Start this circular walk from the gate at the far end of the car park. If you are limited for time, go through the main gate and just walk down to Little Beach. Description: Bombi Moors is a large tract of beautiful sandstone heath. This circular track leads over a series of old sand dunes, up on to Bombi Moors and has side trails leading to the spectacular sandstone cliffs of Cape Three Points named by Captain Cook. At the T-junction, go left towards Little Beach. Just along here you will see a trail leading to Bombi Point. This is highly recommended. Near the end of this side trail, a little opening on your left takes you out onto the cliff tops –a great place for lunch, whale viewing if the time is right and coastal scenery. Return to the main track and continue across the moors through a scrub of stunted eucalypts, hakeas, banksias and casuarinas with a colourful understorey of wildflowers, descending through woodland and some remnant rainforest to the service road into Little Beach. Go right to Little Beach, a small, picturesque rocky bay, or left back to the car park. Distance: About 3km return including the Bombi Point side trail. Duration: 1½ hours –2hrs Degree of Difficulty: Easy. Though the first part has a series of dips for about 200m and the downhill section at the Little Beach end is very eroded, so not suited to anyone with mobility problems. Best Time: Autumn to late Spring for the flowers, and any time for the views.

Kincumba Mountain Reserve

Getting There: From Gosford, follow the Entrance Road through East Gosford to the Avoca Drive traffic lights. Turn right and continue on Avoca Drive to the Kincumber Village shopping centre. At the roundabout, turn left into Bungoona Rd, then first left into Kincumber Street. Follow this street to the end and continue on the road for about 1½ km up to the top of Kincumba Mountain. When you get to the locked gate, there is a car park on the left. Description: Kincumba Mountain Reserve is easily accessed and has great views from an extensive family-friendly picnic area. The Yanina Walk follows the ridge to an escarpment overlooking Picketts Valley. Towards the end of the trail you will see a left fork. Follow this one to Nyari Lookout with views of Terrigal beach then walk along the escarpment to Colin Watters Lookout with views of Avoca beach. On the way back, take the short loop past the caves. Distance: About 3km return. Duration: 1½ hours Degree of Difficulty: Very easy. This track follows the ridge and is mostly wide and flat. Best Time: Spring and summer for the flowers and any time for the views. Notes: There are other walks in the reserve. PLANTS FOUND ON BUSHWALKS IN KINCUMBA MOUNTAIN RESERVE BOTANICAL NAME

Wyrrabalong (South) National Park Crackneck Lookout

Getting there: Travel north along the Entrance Road past Forresters Beach and onto Bateau Bay. At the Bateau Bay Rd traffic lights take the right turn into Bateau Bay Rd and after one Km turn right into Rushby Street. There you'll be able to park near a picnic area, Bruce Burgis Park, overlooking Bateau Bay Beach. Here you could have morning tea before you set off. It would also be a great spot for some lunch after your walk. Alternatively, you can drive up Hilltop St. and park at Crackneck Lookout, starting your walk from there. The best section is from Crackneck L.O. south to the viewing seat. Description: A sign will indicate the start of the walk where you'll be walking south following the coast line into Wyrrabalong National Park. Pause for a short photo stop at Crackneck Lookout. Walk on south to Wyrrabalong Lookout. Return the same way, but there is always something different to see. Distance: From car park to Crackneck Lookout is about 1.25km and another 1.75km to Wyrrabalong Lookout. Length 3km with a total of 6km for the return walk. Duration: Just walking briskly the walk should take you less than 2 hours. But this walk has great views of the coast to admire and some interesting and varied flora to photograph and study so you will need to allow at least an extra hour. Degree of difficulty: This is not a demanding walk and is to be enjoyed. Best time: Spring is possibly the best time especially for Flannel Flowers which are normally spectacular.

Wyrrabalong (North) National Park Red Gum, Burrawang & Lillypilly Loop Trails. Getting There: About 7km north of The Entrance Bridge you will see a small parking area with a large information board. This is the entrance for circuits leading to the rainforest and also to the rim of the main sand dune with viewing platforms across Tuggerah Lake. Circuits are colour-coded. Description: North Wyrrabalong National Park is a beautiful area of littoral rainforest (i.e. forest growing on coastal dunes), gnarled Sydney red gums, Angophora costata and cycads Macrozamia communis, with an understorey of colourful wild flowers. The best of the littoral rainforest, with its canopy of corkwoods and cabbage tree palms can be seen from the Lillypilly Loop Trail. From July to September, the Red Gum Trail offers a wonderful display of wildflowers. Distance:The Burrawang Trail is 1.3km and returning via the Red Gum Trail adds another 2.3km. The Lillypilly Loop is 4.6km long. Duration: Red Gum and Burrawang circuit: 1 to 2 hours. Lillypilly Loop: 2 hours return. Degree of Difficulty: Easy, though in places, soft sand can be tiring on the uphill sides of the dunes. On the Lillypilly Loop, some of it has been made easier with a boardwalk. Best Time: July - October for an incredible variety of flowers, summer for the new bark on the magnificent red gums, or any time for the littoral rainforest, the views and this whole unique sand peninsula. Munmorah State Conservation Area Wybung Head & Grass Tree Trail Getting There: Munmorah is on the Central Coast between Budgewoi and Catherine Hill Bay. There are two entrance gates, one on the western side from the Pacific Highway north of Doyalson (this gate is accessable only if travelling from the north), and the other, at the southern end from Elizabeth Bay Drive. There is an entry fee, per vehicle. Whichever way you access the park, follow the signs from Blue Wren Drive to Campbell Drive About 2km along Campbell Drive, there is a right turn into Wybung Head Rd (unsealed). On your right, (about 1km) you will pass Wybung Trig Lookout (extensive ocean and park views). Continue for about ½ km to a car park. From here you can walk out onto Wybung Head. Description: Wybung Head has one of the best coastal heaths on the Central Coast. In spring it is a mass of flowers. The vegetation, stunted by its locality, is dense and spectacular in colour and variety. There is no real track, just an overgrown one-way path leading down to the point. To find the Grass Tree Track return along the road almost to the trig. On your right you will find the entrance. It is not signposted or wide but it is there. From the ridge it drops down to Frazer Beach. Distance: At Wybung Head, you will probably wander about 200m each way. The Grass Tree Track is about 1km return. Coming back involves a climb, so leaving a vehicle at the Frazer Beach car park, makes this walk an easier exercise. Duration: 2 hours return, though, if you are a native flora enthusiast you will probably spend a lot more time admiring the flora. Degree of Difficulty: Easy. Best Time: July- November for an incredible variety of spring flowers; April - July for Hakea bakeriana and Banksias; or any time for the wonderful coastal and ocean views. Notes: There is an interesting walk of about 2 - 3 hours return from the Snapper Point Rd. to Mooney Beach. It is an easy fire trail.

Popran National Park Access to this park is from Ironbark Road, Mangrove Mountain. Drive to the end of the road where there is a picnic area. Warning: after passing the property “Misty” the road can be quite rough. Lookout on the left hand side for a rock platform, which has aboriginal carvings. Regretably they are in poor condition. The Mt Olive track goes to the Emerald Pool and the 248 track goes to an area called The Crater, where the vegetation is different as this is a basalt diatreme. PLANTS FOUND ON BUSHWALKS IN POPRAN N.
