The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) was set up as a statutory body on 11 June 2001 by the Minister for Education and Science. Under the Qualifications (Education & Training) Act, 1999, FETAC now has responsibility for making awards previously made by NCVA.

Purpose

This module has been developed to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills necessary to build brick/block structures, i.e., garden walls, piers, internal or external. An understanding and ability to read basic plans and a knowledge of health and safety.

Level 3 Certificate, Junior Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

General aims Learners who successfully complete this module will:

Have a basic understanding of health and safety construction industry.

8.2

Demonstrate understanding of aggregates, i.e., lime- cement, mortars, concrete.

8.3

demonstrate appropriate methods of work, i.e., plumbing, levelling, gauging, laying, erecting a corner, working along the line.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES

Brickwork/Blockwork Principles learners should be able to:

10.1.1.

Understand and be familiar with the 1989 where applicable to brick/blockwork.

10.1.2.

To explain the different types of Foundations, the proper excavation, levelling and pouring of concrete.

10.1.3.

Calculate the proper dimensions for damp course level to be introduced into the overall building.

10.1.4.

Explain the different types of damp course and their proper usage.

10.1.5.

Know the different types of pointing and where they are suitable.

10.2

Brickwork/Blockwork Practical

10.2.1.

Mix a gauge of mortar to the specific requirements of the job.

10.2.2.

Knowledge of mortar board control/mortar bed.

10.2.3.

Use a level properly for plumb, level and range.

10.2.4.

Build brick/block to a line. .

10.2.5.

Build a pier. Build a brick pier with or without tying a wall into it.

10.2.6.

Know the correct tools for the specific job.

Square the proposed brick/block structure
