Boundary Bay Quilters’ Guild Newsletter – June 2011 The BBQG meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7 PM, September through June in the Sacred Heart Parish Gymnasium, 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner (Delta), BC www.boundarybayquiltersguild.ca Boundary Bay Quilters’ Guild Mission Statement Our guild aims to provide opportunities which encourage our members in their love of quilting through workshops, demonstrations, guest speakers and small groups. We hope to inspire creativity, learning and friendships among our members; also to provide outreach where help is needed in the community.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE We have had a fine year in the guild this year, lots of wonderful and creative quilts by so many of our members. I would like to welcome Sjannon, Matthew, Joan, Ruth, and Anne to the executive, and to thank them for taking these jobs on behalf of the membership. I would also like to say thank you again to outgoing executive members, Eileen, Kathleen, Margita, and Shirley. Have a terrific summer everyone, it is a great time to try sun printing fabric! Pat Nelson

VICE-PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Well, another quilting guild year has come to an end and oh, all the wonderful things we saw and experienced and learned. I don't know about all of you but my "wanting to do" far out does my "time to do". May some, if not all of you accomplish some of the "wants" this summer. If I see you at summer events, great, if not I'll see you in September. Shirley Fedoruk

COMMITTEE REPORTS  TREASURER’S REPORT We currently have approximately $13,700 in the bank some of which is membership fees for 2011-2012. The full financial report was issued at our AGM held at our May guild meeting. If you have any inquiries, I can be reached at [email protected] Stacey Murton

 ADVERTISING Thanks for the lovely positive response to the Guild's new lanyards. The new plastic badgeholders are a bit snug for our membership cards, but a tiny trim fixes that. Please wear them whenever appropriate, and to promote our fabulous BB Quilters’ Guild website! Any members who missed the hand-out at the March meeting can acquire their lanyard from any Executive member at our June meeting. Hopefully that will cover our current membership. Thereafter each new membership will receive a lanyard when joining the Boundary Bay Quilters’ Guild. Also we have bookmarks and meeting posters available if anyone has a high-traffic bulletin board, eventtable, venue or other such spot to draw interest in our Guild and all its good works. Please contact Donna Picard (email is best) to inquire. Donna Picard

 BLOCK OF THE MONTH Thank you to everyone who joined our BofM this year. We are looking forward to seeing some of the finished projects at the June meeting. Stella McDonald

 CHARITY BABY QUILTS

Our baby quilt challenge “Who, Who, Who’s Rockin’ The Boat” will reach it’s exciting climax at the June meeting with one lucky member winning a lovely gift. Contest entries must contain an owl, or owls, and/or a boat of some description. It is always so much fun to see how creative we are and what great ideas our membership has translated into fabric As well, we will be doing a random draw for another little giftee from all of the members who have signed the baby quilt book this year. I’ll try and have some new kits available on the 21st, as well. If you are using your own fabric for the baby quilts, but would like some batting or backing, just let me know and we can get some to you. There is usually some available at the meetings, but sometimes we run out. Going forward, Stella and I will be doing this as a joint effort for next year. It will be great to do it as a team and will probably ensure that we’ll have new kits made every month! The executive would like to thank all the members who, this year, donated quilts and baby hats for us to pass along to the Rotary Women’s Auxiliary for their Baby Bundles. We know they go to a good cause. You all deserve a pat on the back and a big hug! Dawn Fielden

 COFFEE & TEA BREAK My thanks to all the members of the guild who have supplied the coffee break with all their wonderful baking….and for supporting our guild. We hope that you will continue to support the coffee break and donate an item when your turn comes up. 604-946-9982 [email protected] Jeanne Ryan

 D.O.V.E. PROGRAM (Delta Opposes Violence Everywhere) It’s been a great year partnering with Delta Victims Services and they have so appreciated all our donations of bags and toiletries. Our guild has so far supplied them with close to 140 bags and hopefully we will continue supplying them in the future. If you have made bags or have toiletries you wish to donate, please bring them to the next guild meeting and we will drop them off at Delta Victim Services. If you would like the full pattern instructions, just email me at [email protected] or phone 604275-9036. I will also have information available at our guild meetings. If you would like more information on the D.O.V.E. program visit their website at www.deltassist.com/dove.html. Thank you. Shirley Square-Briggs

 FINALLY FINISHED FUN(d)

Are you working on a quilt, have completed a quilt over the summer or planning to make a quilt that must be completed before our June 2011 meeting? For every quilt that is completed and registered and been shown at “Show and Tell”, you pay $2 ($1 for a baby quilt) into the kitty. The prize money will be divided into $100 increments and the winners picked at the June meeting. Registration forms are now available. Please bring exact change. This will be fun. We’ll have great show and tell as we finish as many quilts as we can to get them into the draw. Dawn Wilkins

TIPS AND TRICKS Change your needle (hand and machine) after each quilt to make sure that it is always sharp and penetrates well. If your thread tangles, try turning the spool around, top to bottom. This often will fix the problem.

 LIBRARY

LIBRARY RULES

It’s been an interesting year and I’ve enjoyed meeting so many of you over the piles of books. We hope that you’ll take lots of books home this month to enjoy at your leisure, but please remember to renew your membership before you check books out for the summer. We’ll probably be looking for more helpers next year so I may be contacting some of you who have indicated the library as an interest. If you’d like to know more about what that entails, come and see me before the meeting or email me at [email protected] . It’s a great way to see what we’ve got, and you get first dibs as the books come back in. Have a great summer and keep your eye out for anything that we should be adding to our collection. If you can’t make the meeting, please send your books back with a friend. If you can’t arrange that you can email me at [email protected] and I’ll check them out to you for another month to save you the overdue fees. Pat Czucsor

7 June 2011

 QUILTS OF VALOUR Thank you so much to those of you who have contributed time and fabric for this worthy cause. The quilts are all so unique and reflect the many different styles and patterns of our Guild members. We hear over and over how much comfort Quilts of Valour bring to those Canadian armed forces men and women who have been injured in Afghanistan, and how much they are appreciated. Since last September we have made nearly a dozen quilts, some of which we anticipate will be shown at an upcoming event in Vancouver to honour Afghanistan veterans. I feel so very proud of the Guild and believe that in our way we are showing our appreciation to the sons and daughters, husbands and wives who serve in Afghanistan. We will continue with this project until our troops are withdrawn, and hope that this time comes quickly. If you feel like piecing a Q of V top, let me know! I have maple leaf squares, and coordinating fabric, all ready to go. Maybe you prefer to make a favourite pattern or try a new one (it does not have to be with maple leaf squares) – I have fabric just waiting for your ideas! The following link can help you get the Maple Leaf block pattern should you want one: www.quilterscache.com I can be reached at 604 -943-2678 or [email protected]

 SPECIAL EVENTS Summer is almost here (we hope) so the BBQG will again be participating in several community events in July and August. We’ll help Ladner celebrate Canada Day by setting up our tent on Delta Street, and then do a mini-quilt show inside the barn at the Wellbrook Winery’s Summerfest on Saturday, July 16th. Go to http://www.wellbrookwinery.com/specialevents/ for more details about this family-friendly event. We will be looking for quilts to hang at the show, so will send out an e-mail blast closer to this event. Sunday, August 21 will find us at the Ladner Quilt and Car Show. We will have a sign up sheet for that event at the June meeting. Helping with these events is always fun and is a good way to get to know some of your fellow members better. The ball has started rolling for our quilt show in the fall of 2012. We will be having our first “Blue Skies” meeting at 7 pm on Monday, June 27th at 835 Eden Crescent in Tsawwassen. Any member interested in any aspect of the show is more than welcome to attend. The more ideas and input we have, the better our next quilt show will be. Dawn Fielden

 SUNSHINE CLUB We have sent out several cards of support recently. For new members, the Sunshine Club sends out cards to members who are sick, or who have sick family members, bereavement cards etc. If you know of someone who needs a card of encouragement from BBQG, please let me know. I can be reached at 604 943-2678 or [email protected] Margriet Warren

Newsletter – June 2011

 THE ALBERTA QUILT PROJECT The Western Canadian History Program at the Royal Alberta Museum is embarking on an Alberta Craft Research Initiative to document the material culture of craft production within the Alberta context. This research project will address the history of craft development in the areas of studio pottery, hand weaving and quilting. The Alberta Quilt Project, a component of this research initiative, will look at contemporary quilts made in Alberta over the last 25 years and heritage quilts made in Alberta or brought by immigrants to Alberta. Firstly, we are calling all Alberta guilds, groups and/or individuals to help us document today's quilting history by completing a survey questionnaire. In order to truly capture Alberta quilters today, it is necessary that as many quilters as possible participate in the survey. As we proceed with the Alberta Quilt Project, we hope that our research will help us tell the Alberta quilting story. Secondly, we wish to continue to document heritage quilts made in Alberta. Our goal is to document and photograph quilts found in regional museums as well as in private collections throughout Alberta. We have been invited to participate in the Quilt Index, a partnership of the Michigan State University Museum, the Alliance for American Quilts, and MATRIX: The Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online. The Quilt Index is an online database of thousands of quilts, utilized by quilt scholars and enthusiasts around the world. At this point only quilts from U.S. institutions are available online. Once we have identified quilts that contribute to the Alberta quilting story, we can include them in the Quilt Index along with the Royal Alberta Museum's quilt collection. If you own a heritage quilt made in Alberta, it may be a good candidate for the Quilt Index. Once we collect our research data from the regional museums and the quilting guilds, groups, and individuals throughout Alberta and analyse the data, we will schedule yearly outings to various parts of Alberta to photograph and document quilts that are unique to Alberta's history. Be a part of Alberta's history today. For further information you can contact Lucie Heins at [email protected]

It will not gum up needles, damage fabrics or machines, and it removes the need for baste stitching, pinning, taping, fusibles, and spraying.
