Brazilian Book Chamber Founded in 1946, Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) celebrates 70 years in 2016. There are publishers, distributors, booksellers and door-to-door players gathered around a fundamental cause: the construction of a country with better education through books and reading. CBL represents more than 500 associates all around Brazil. Its mission is to achieve the goals of its associates, expanding Brazilian publishing market through democratization of book access and promotion of actions to disseminate and encourage reading. CBL works hard to keep its political representativeness with the Federal Government and also with the National Congress concerning book and reading subjects, aiming at extending the influence of the sector in the decisions that concern books. So it maintains articulation among several national and regional entities connected to book and reading activities, allowing a coordinated action in the productive chain of several power authorities. Knowledge, financial and economic information about publishing market form the basis for opportunity evaluation as well as for supporting decision making processes. This is the reason why Brazilian Book Chamber annually offers to its associates a complete x-ray of the sector with the survey “Production and Sales of the Brazilian Publishing Sector”. The survey is a study conducted by FIPE (The Institute of Economic Research Foundation, an entity connected to University of São Paulo), sponsored by the Brazilian Book Chamber and National Union of Book Publishers (SNEL). CBL provides legal advice, cataloguing services, and the issuing of documents such as CBL’s exclusiveness letters are some of the support services offered to all associates.

CBL’s MAIN ACTIONS Book School The Book School aims at capacitating and updating professionals of publishing market. Jabuti Award Created in 1958, Jabuti is Brazil’s most traditional and celebrated book award. The most important differential in relation to other literature awards is its reach: besides appreciating writers, the award highlights the work quality of several areas related to creation and production of a book. São Paulo Book Fair São Paulo’s International Biennial Bookfair is the biggest literary event in Latin America. It gathers the main publishing houses, bookstores and distributors of the country that present their products and releases. The Bookfair takes 700 thousand visitors to a total space of 60 thousand m². Besides the great book offer, the event also offers an extensive cultural program, mixing literature, gastronomy, culture, business and meetings of writers with their audiences.

Get to know the story of this armadillo that dreamt of becoming a balloon. Determined, the armadillo climbed the mountains to the top every day and threw himself dreaming of becoming an armadillo-balloon. Will he be able to make his dream come true? This beautiful story about the right to dream is told in verses by the writer Sonia Barros. The poem gains added beauty with Simone Matias’ illustrations.

Flies and other memories is a production by the writer and illustrator Eve Ferretti in partnership with the writer Fabíola Werlang. The texts and images combined present apparently eccentric and complex views in a subtle way, as a child’s look. The relationship between the written and the illustrated narratives is established as a game: while the text narrates an ordinary situation in the character’s life, the illustration reveals an eccentric side of the same character. Inspired by Edward Lear and Lewis Carrol works, Flies and Other Memories is an intriguing book, as children’s look to the varying realities they face.

Rafaela is one of those kids that, facing a big pregnant woman’s belly, do not hesitate to ask: how did he make it to the inside? In this funny story written by Ilan Brenman and illustrated by Vanessa Prezoto, a girl will find out, not before listening to the most dazzling hypothesis, how babies that get out of their mothers’ bellies are formed. A lovely book with the taste of children’s own discoveries.

In this book, Rodolfo Castro dives into the origin of fairy tales and makes his way to the Middle Age to recover classic tales like Sleeping Beauty (The matter of silence), Cinderella (Damned small foot) and Little Red Riding Hood (The wild lady). The tales are here in versions that seem to us “notes”, besides the fact that its composition intentionally unites variations that are not familiar to the public. The narratives regarding Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are a suitable contribution to expand the reader’s horizons, not only in relation to the fantastic world, but also related to magic realism. The book enhances its power with the sinister psychological images created by the prizewinner Brazilian illustrator Alexandre Camanho.

What can a child do when they start missing someone sincerely? A result of a close partnership between author and illustrator, The Boy Who Wanted to Become Wind proves that to transpose long distances between people who love each other is possible making good use of imagination and sensibility. The artist Luisa Helena Ribeiro illustrated and signed the creative graphic project, which offers a playful trip to young readers.

A bat, a frog, a lizard, a gecko. This book is not just about well-known creatures, it’s about other ones too. Ronaldo Simões Coelho discovers their details and similarities and writes about them, helping us see how they are similar in many ways to the world around us. Coelho writes in a poetic style such as that of the Woody Woodpecker stories that ‘tickles a giant tree and the locust that pretends to be a leaf.’ The illustrations for this award-winning book are by Angela-Lago.

Since the beginning of its activities in 2009, Aletria has taken on this ideal: to attract readers with books that propose symbolic and creative situations that bring reflection, learning and fun. Adding to that, there is the care for combining the excellence of the graphic project and the editorial quality to illustrations that provide the reader with an aesthetic 12

experience of real value. The importance of preserving the subtleness of the dialogue between text and image has been, for us, a challenge that is reflected the capacity of producing books that not only teach how to read but also how to see things. And, of course, as a top priority, there is the careful choice of literary texts containing good stories.

Obesity as a symptom

Author: Maria Salete Arenales Loli Illustrator: Paraleloz™ Company

“From the full table to the surgery table”

Author: Maria Salete Arenales Loli Illustrator: Paraleloz™ Company

The verbal report of a patient is the main resource that enables the psychologist to intervene. Those who dedicate to the clinical work with teenagers are sensitive to the issue of lack of speech, how adults express themselves, and the lack of playfulness, a technique used with children. Realizing this difficulty, the author, through a doctoral thesis research, developed an innovative tool in the clinical context that facilitates the communication of emotions by the adolescent. The tool is a kit suitable for clinical and forensic psychologists, and other professionals who conduct interviews with teenagers.

One factor that makes adolescents drop out of psychotherapy is the communication failure with the psychotherapist. With over 20 years’ clinical and academic experience, the author built a kit to help psychotherapists address this matter. The kit offers a playful and ageappropriate set through graphical expression, modeling, the use of photographs and family tree, through the “pre-teen box” - consisting of scissors, glue, clay, paint and brush -among other proposals for this agegroup. The kit is recommended to psychologists and having also been adapted to the school context.

In this work, the author delved into psychotherapeutic care and the lives of patients revealing what is happening “behind the scenes”. She also offers us information that has been little or not at all analyzed in the treatment of obesity, pointing to new research channels. This is a dissertation in psychology, but in accessible language, which includes the patients the patients themselves. Recommended to all psychologists and other professionals who treat obesity.

This book is courageous and transformative. The author describes her years of clinical and research experience as a significant contribution to this so little studied new area that is the psychology in the surgical preparation of patients for obesity surgery. The author has not failed to answer tough questions on the subject and tackle controversial issues, revealing the human side of the medical professional, one who has uncertainties, fears, anxieties and, above all, who is fallible. The book is recommended to psychologists involved in the psychological preparation process of bariatric surgery, patients and other professionals involved in such context.

Cardiovascular Medicine – Reducing the Impact of Diseases

PLASTIC SURGERY

HUMAN PARASITOLOGY

VETERINARY PARASITOLOGY

Management of the critically ill patient

Author: Ivo Pitanguy

The Dermatologic Surgery in Brazil has shown great progress, allowing precise indications and modern techniques for carrying out procedures. It includes new resources applied to oncologic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery – with the latter leading the patient to present new skin appearance and, consequently, salutary psychological effects. The knowledge of dermatologic surgery is of great importance for the dermatologist since it offers readily applicable practice. The book is divided into three main parts: Part I – Basic Dermatologic Surgery; Part II – Intermediate Dermatologic Surgery – Frequent Procedures in Dermatologic Surgery; Part III – Advanced Dermatologic Surgery. It is, therefore, essential for Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons, resident doctors of Dermatology and Plastic Surgery.

The most celebrated plastic surgeon in the world, Professor Ivo Pitanguy, launches the definitive work of his so creative and transformative career. Creative, due to the innovations brought to the surgical techniques, and transformative, due to the changes of models and paradigms hitherto performed by plastic surgeons. The book fully reflects its subtitle – “a sight of its amplitude” - the coverage of all basics and practice of Plastic Surgery, which sometimes show great complexity. The coverage, here as a synonym for amplitude, is contemplated in parts: I. Principles; II. Head and Neck Surgery (Face, Eyelids, Perioral Region, Front Region, Rhinoplasty, Otoplasty, Hair Implant, Cosmiatric Dermatology Procedures); III. Body Contouring Surgeries (Breast, Abdomen, Upper limbs, Lower limbs); IV. Congenital and Traumatic Injuries. Thus, it is mandatory reading for Plastic Surgeons, Residents of Plastic Surgery and Candidates for the title of Specialist in Plastic Surgery.

Cardiovascular Medicine – Reducing the Impact of Diseases addresses, as shown on the title, the cardiovascular disease. As it is known, this is the leading cause of deaths worldwide and is associated with high morbidity, affecting both life quality and the years of life of the population. In Brazil, the cardiovascular disease has shown worrying growth, due to changes in lifestyle, especially sedentary life style, stress and diet. Its growth also extends to population aging. The publishers are: Professor Roberto Kalil Filho, Member of the Department of Cardiopulmonology, of the Medicine School of the University of São Paulo – FMUSP, Director of the Division of Clinical Cardiology and Head of the Department of Cardiopulmonology at FMUSP, General Director of the Center of Cardiology of Hospital Sírio-Libanês. Professor Valentin Fuster, already well-known to the Brazilian public, is the author of numerous books on cardiology in the English language, Director of Zena and Michael A. Weiner Cardiovascular Institute, and of MarieJosée and Henry R. Kravis Cardiovascular Health Center, Richard Gorlin, MD/Heart Research Foundation Professor, Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Heart (Nova York, NY, USA), Chief Editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Human Parasitology is reaching its 13th edition with the full force of a careful review, associated with the details of the advancement of current parasitology. This edition is emblematically based on three fundamentals of teaching: updated text based on the latest scientific research; well-systematized, objective didactics with short paragraphs. Linear exposure. Rich in illustrations and figures; an Editorial Board that associates great experienced teachers to others who are younger and offer the force of their knowledge modernity. Nevertheless, the book preserves some original themes, such as the brief history of the main Brazilian parasitologists, a glossary of commonly used entries in parasitology, and a very well structured chapter with the representation of parasitology as a science and its extension and integration into society.

Joint work of researchers, professors and Brazilian professionals of accredited knowledge and experience in the study of Veterinary Parasitology. The scope of its text acknowledges it as the most comprehensive and illustrated national work on the subject. The book has the following parts: 1. Introduction - modern and dynamic view of the fundamentals and concepts of parasitism; 2. Protozoa - those of veterinary interest were selected; 3. Helminths - special attention to those causing damage to production due to their enzootic or zoonotic features; 4. Arthropods - broad study of the relationship with hosts, considering measures for control and prevention; 5. Veterinary Parasitological Diagnosisvery useful to all those interested in the identification of parasites. The book has as its target public Veterinarians, Biologists, Medical and Veterinary Parasitology professionals.

The aim of this book is to serve as a solid base of information and knowledge to all professionals who are dedicated to the treatment of critically ill patients, so that they receive what is considered the best and most appropriate treatment. Its organization in more than one hundred chapters is aimed at helping the reader find the information needed quickly and practically. The review and update of concepts, along with the presence of numerous decision and behavior algorithms serve equally the physician and the ICU professionals, ensuring quality of patient care and treatment. At the same time, the discussion of new ideas, doubts and uncertainties, as well as the limits of various forms of treatment, brings the necessary stimulus for the experienced professional to continue the search for better solutions. This way, the book becomes unique and particularly important. It introduces a new model in the field of ICUs, based on continuous improvement and quality assurance of its services.

The life of a prince is not easy. Especially if he has to go to the School for enchanted princes. He has all kinds of lessons, riding, Swordsplay, good manners, bravery ... All as it should be. But Valentino was different, he didn’t want to be just a prince, he wanted more.

When wearing her glasses, Charlotte often sees things she does not like to see, such as children arguing, a polluted landscape, or a beach full of waste. She’s convinced that without glasses, the world around her is much more beautiful. But then one day, even without glasses, she finds her grandmother very sad. So she decides to cheer her up and, instead of looking away, she is determined to help make this world a better place, even with small gestures such as collecting the garbage or doing some gardening.

The tale Hansel and Gretel has been narrated more than a century ago and still fascinates children and adults from all over the world. In this new approach, the author and illustrator, Rosinha, decides to face the challenge by retelling the story of the brother and sister using only images. The result is a striking book filled with powerful illustrations.

A secret friend can be different in many ways. He can be brave or a coward, fun or formal, a swimmer or a runner, tall or short. It doesn’t matter, as long as he or she is your friend. “...by age seven, about 37% of children create an invisible friend. Imaginary friends can help childpe with fears, explore ideas, or gain a sense of competence through learning or taking care of the imaginary friend.” Psychology Today, Jan. 2013

The woman according to God’s heart

To Win the Fear and Defeat the Dragon

Author: Fernanda Soares

Author and Illustrator: Márcio Mendes

Seeking the Uranon Kingdom

The True Sexual Fulfillment

Author: Tiago Marcon

Author: Roberta Castro

Sin separates us from God, so we need to seek urgently for the Lord. Mons. Jonas Abib awakes the necessity in our heart for this seeking and brings to relevance the importance of being in worship of the Lord. Through adoration, by God’s initiative, we are healed of our inside wounds, and all of our life is transformed. There’s not a lot needed: it is enough to be before Him and to show Him all our truth. Now my eyes have seen You is a call for each person to become more intimate with Jesus’ heart, because He is the one, who first of all, desires to be with us in this lovely dialogue.

In our modern times, especially because of the emotionality and of the thousands of pseudo-feelings, it is very difficult to speak about family, marriage, spousal love, without falling into rhetoric or only in a theory, or even still in pessimism. In the book “In the School of Nazareth – becoming a sacred family”, Fr. Bruno Varriano invites us to edify our family, according to the example given by the Sacred Family of Nazareth, an admirable family model that sought sanctity and that renounced everything to live fully to God’s plans.

The book “The woman according to God’s heart” brings us themes like the woman’s creation, the beauty of her own being, her essence, singularity, feminism and femininity, a little of the authoress’s history and Mary as a model for women. To be a woman according to God’s heart one need to accept to live an adventure of faith, in which Fernanda Soares invites you to go on, through the pages of this book. Know that… You are a unique and unrepeatable woman!

Márcio Mendes first infant-juvenile book brings an inspiring history, funny, tasty and humorous. Get to know Daniel’s history in a different way: with beautiful illustrations and a touch of poetry. These pages will be an incentive to overcome fear, to discover the importance of a true friendship and to increase self-esteem. A good reading always has the gift of warming the soul and heal the heart. To learn something through laughter is tastier.

And if you suddenly discovered that everything that is real wasn’t limited to what is visible and touchable? What if there was an “invisible” world, so concrete as this world in which we live? These were the answers found by a young adolescent, braving through a new dimension of existence. The boring vacations at his grandparents’ house became an unusual and unforgettable travel that was able to change his life. More than a trip that you can take, it’s an experience that will change you forever! Prepare your backpack and come aboard this adventure. Have a nice trip!

The book casts a new vision on human sexuality. Using easy language though based both on medical and therapeutic knowledge, he takes the reader down the path of his own history, helping him find out the beauty of his body, of sex, of pleasure and the true meaning behind all that. The book involves two realities that complement each other: an opening vision of the concepts concerning sexuality/affection and a dive into the Love of God, which is the true source of all real and balanced relationship.

The Resistance

Author: Marcílio França Castro

Author: Ana Martins Marques

Author: Julián Fuks

An anthropologist lands in the Amazon to study the myths of an indigenous tribe. His mission is to find out what is behind the story of the “bird catcher”, whose ending he was never able to uncover. As the researcher begins to bond with the Indians, he gets closer to unveiling the mystery, but as it turns out this discovery could have disastrous consequences. Precise and agile, Upriver is a cross between Bernardo Carvalho’s Nove Noites, where a researcher dives into the lives of the Xingu Indians, and Heart of Darkness, where the slow journey up a wild river reveals a somber and frightening world.

Showing an enormous technical domain, a unique look on human relations and a singular point of view to address the imaginative matter, the author focuses on the peculiarities of everyday life. A hand stuntman on films about writers explores the relationship between the pace of strumming and the style of his writing. The assistant of an old actor notices the latter no longer differentiates his life and the plays in which he acted. From seemingly mundane situations, a world of extravagance absorbs the reader, making him wary of the pitfalls we build for ourselves and for others. All of it without losing the pleasure of a great storie.

A humanitarian agency worker is assigned to hand over the ransom that will free a young hostage being held by a group of Islamic extremists. While he is waiting to make contact with the terrorists, he casts his mind back to the most tortuous romantic episode of his life: his affair with a male Mexican student in Berlin. Sympathy for the devil moves deftly back and forth between modern-day terrorism and the acceptance of a lawless world created by an unequal relationship, making this novel one of the most important Brazilian literary landmarks of recent times.

After spending almost a decade in infertility purgatory, journalist Teté Ribeiro took a bold decision: to have children using an Indian surrogate mother. My two girls her account of the odyssey that led to her decision and the details that marked the experience: her relationship with the Indian mother, the daily routine after the twins were born, the particularities of the clinic where the procedure was done, and the dilemmas of being a mother without having experienced the act of giving birth are all related in this moving account and exemplary journalistic endeavor that presents an x-ray of the dilemmas of contemporary women.

Ana Martins Marques’ third book reveals that she is a writer of great importance to Brazilian poetry. Her verses are communicative and on point; the lyrical note is always accompanied by an ironic — and delicate — view of reality. Divided into four sections, The book of similarities rouses the reader to the illuminating and delicate pleasure of a strong and original voice. From love to the awareness that there is room for the commonplace, from the understanding of the precariousness of our times to the grace that is provided by memory, this is a poet who speaks to us directly.

In the terrifying atmosphere of late 1970’s Buenos Aires, a young militant couple engaged in the resistance against the military regime adopts a child. Amid the ever-growing oppression, they flee to Brazil to pursue their lives. The boy grows, his parents give him a brother and a sister, and the family relations become more intricate. It is up to Sebastián, the sensitive youngest son, to examine this past of violence and exile, and more importantly, to rewrite the family’s narrative. The result is a prose that is both lyrical and essayistic; a powerful account where one’s intimate past and the history of a country overlap in an ingenious manner.

This book, newly translated from the original version, focuses on liberation in education. In the author’s view, the objective of education is to liberate oneself from injustice and an oppressive reality. Education, therefore, seeks liberation, the radical transformation of the subject, who is educated and who also educates. His accusation of an unjust world opens the door to a transformational criticism capable of ushering in a new reality. Education for liberation is situated on the horizon of a utopian view of society. For Freire, this new reality is the utopia of today’s educator.

This book deals with one of the greatest problems of our day: xenophobia, or fear of the foreign and the foreigner. In an increasingly globalized world, large numbers of people relocate to new countries and continents in search of opportunity and fleeing situations of war and poverty. This movement provokes tensions between these contemporary nomads, who wander the globe in search of a new life, and the populations and places who receive them. The book seeks to approach various dimensions of the problem and help educators approach these issues in the classroom.

Allowance Is Not Only Money – Get to know the 8 types and build a new future

Author: Reinaldo Domingos

A book can turn children’s fears, wishes and needs into a strength so that they become the protagonists of their stories. Journal of Dreams addresses this concept as well as concepts which will become the foundation for children’s financial education learning process. In this work, the reader is invited to Nico’s wonderful world where the boy plays around, helped by three friendly piggy banks, showing the way he found to do everything he wishes.

The book introduces Kira, a child who loves to watch clouds and with a rich imagination creates several characters based on the shapes she sees. Telling the story as a poem, the book enchants both by its beautiful story and stunning illustration. It is a delicious adventure in the world of clouds, a place as sweet as a candy bar. Magical as a ride on a winged horse. Fun as cartwheeling on the tail of a comet-shaped cloud.

A beautiful princess cannot find a suitor who wins her heart. Her maid, tired of seeing the young princess sad and lonely, has then, a strong feeling: they cannot find the suitor because a spell turned him into a toad. All the princess has to do is to find the toad and kiss it, and a handsome lad will appear. But, how many toads will the princess have to kiss until she finds the young man who will change her life?

This book revolutionizes the way on how money is introduced into the lives of children, breaking paradigms and showing it is possible to address the subject in a ludic manner. The information transmitted in this book covers not only the financial aspect but, also, the social, ecological and solidary entrepreneurship bias, among other ways to associate money and reality in win-win situation. The author stablishes 8 types of allowances applicable to kids and teens.

Ermance Dufaux, with a rare felicity, penetrates into the maze of psicic questions, showing the crual mental mechanisms which make us suffer instead of love, self-plague instead of forgive oneself. This bedside book is meant to support meditation, looking for daily practice in our day to day lives. The author exhorts to take a conscious attitude to get out of the mental labyrints and receive the clarity of love.

Listen to feelings is looking after yourself and love yourself. It is a change of attitude with yourself. Feelings are the major conquest of the evolution of the Spirit. By listening to your feelings your will understand your soul better. All feelings matter in the process of personal growth. When I say “I can’t feel this” I am simply despising the opportunity to investigate my self and receive the inner messages of my mental life.

Accept feelings is a terapeutic way of living. By accepting them you get two essential medicines to cure yourself: adequate thinking linked to reality and self-acceptance. This inner climate avoid being stucked in dark aspects of your life. The cure and redemption are personal paths. Merit and personal work are the fruits, with the help of time, patience discipline and persistence. Emotional maturation bring us to confront our emotions for the sake of our health and release.

They are human beings, integrating our race. They are inteligents, with a huge amount of knowledge of divine laws and a rare ability to manipulate natural energies. They transmigrated from various planets bringing bilions of creatures to discover their divine part and start the path of evolution by rising consciously.

Children ON THE NET Collection

Author: Rogério Andrade Barbosa Illustrator: Ciça Fittipaldi

Author: Claudia Souza Illustrator: Alexandre Rampazo

Authors: Cassiana Pizaia, Rima Awada and Rosi Vilas Boas Illustrator: Thiago Lopes

Danite was very happy with her recent marriage, but she does not realize how difficult it would be to deal with the resistance from her stepson, Beshir. For some advice, she seeks a monk, who proposes a task in exchange for help: bring three whiskers of a lion. Danite will need a lot of patience to accomplish it. Moreover, what would be the monk’s advice? Would it be worth risking herself? Recreated by award-winning Rogério Andrade Barbosa and Ciça Fittipaldi, the African tale in this book offers an invaluable universal teaching about persistence.

Josefina really wants to be a ballerina. The parents enrolled her in ballet lessons, but she doesn’t learn how to dance. In addition, changing dance schools is not enough: Josefina won’t to do the activities proposed, not even keep up with the class. So why Josefina still wants to be a ballerina? A story about what we are and want to be, even if it is just imagination.

Peace, an important theme to humanity, turned into poetry in the creative hands of writers César Obeid and Jonas Ribeiro. With rhythm and rhyme, the duo made poems for children to have fun and reflect about respect, solidarity and dialogue; all effects of peace. This is the third joint production by these authors, who released by Editora do Brazil the titles “The transparent ladder” and “The boy of many faces.” The illustrations of the Argentinian Vanina Starkoff, complement the text, bringing many colors, lightness and details that convey a sense of true peace.

THE TEENAGER AND THE INTERNET: Links and Glitches in a Virtual World

VOYAGING AS A CALLING: Itineraries, Partnerships and Pathways to Knowledge

Author: Cláudia Prioste

Author: Fernanda Arêas Peixoto

Author: Carlos Cortez Minchillo

In line with contemporary architectonic critique, Paulo Bruna broadens the limited perspective of the contemporary Brazilian architectonic critique. Therefore, he re-elaborates the concepts of modern and modernity, having the 1920s and 1930s Europe as background. He then approaches the Brazilian architectonic culture in order to show that since the decade of 1930 architects and engineers have been focused on materializing, in a practical and concrete way, the modern movement ideas. He moves on to demonstrate how the construction of massive housing complexes in Brazil was influenced by theoretical concepts and constructive methods related to the modern movement.

Indians of Brazil offers a well-based and up-to-date study of the existing knowledge on Brazilian indians, ranging from prehistory to today. The author presents, in a condensed format, all the aspects referring to the history, socio-cultural and political organization of the Brazilian Indian populations, providing a general overview on the theme in a language that is accessible to all, including unspecialized readers. This new edition has additional sections, updates and significant alterations. The book aims to complement students’ knowledge and to provide a more realistic view of the matter.

This work analyses three novels by the Brazilian writer Erico Verissimo in which the plot is set outside Brazil. These works represent a cosmopolitan attitude that marks a significant departure from the hegemonic nationalist project in literary modernism in Brazil. Considering the engagement of the author in the public sphere as an intellectual and his role as a “cultural translator and interpreter” between Brazil and the United States, this book studies the relation between Verissimo’s international projection, thematic, formal, and ideological features of these three novels and the critical reception of such texts, especially in the U.S.

The book is the result of an empirical study on the adolescent’s relationship with the Internet, examining possible effects of the use of information technologies on the subjective constitution of the contemporary individual. The study focuses on understanding the habits and interests of young individuals in cyberspace and performs an ethnographic survey of the cyber culture, in order to unravel the ideological and economical aspects underpinning the most popular virtual environments. Also under scrutiny are the ways in which social networks, online gaming and virtual sex intervene in teenage life, and the role of school and family in this context.

The major theme that brings together the characters herein – Michel Leiris, Gilberto Freyre, Roger Bastide, Oliveira Lima and Pierre Verger – is their voyages, taking place between the 30s and the 60s, in Brazil, Spanish America or in Africa. This book revisits such authors in the light of the contexts of those voyages, which are invaluable for the retrieval of knowledge-building processes. Those voyages, as Peixoto postulates, are not only gateways to the production of knowledge and ideas, but also ways of defining the authors’ worldly individual spaces, as paths and ideas are always fleeting and transitory.

Author: Rodrigo Lacerda Illustrator: Mariana Valente

What has big bright eyes, pointy ears, and very long nails? It is a wolf? No! But then, who is it? This guessing tale reminds us of riddle games. The narrator addresses the reader proposing riddles that always end with the question: “Who is this?”. The illustrations are fundamental to the guessing game, creating situations sometimes frightening, sometimes funny.

One of the most recognized authors in Brazil, Tatiana Belinky writes in verses about the importance of knowing and respecting the differences. Diversity means different skin color, hair texture or even different moods. Factors that do not make people better or worse, but different. Like all human beings.

Samurai were Japanese warriors with strict code of conduct who stood for justice with courage, compassion, courtesy, honesty, loyalty, and honor. The Little Samurai is the story of how Yuji first learned (with the help of his grandfather) that he was a Samurai, a fact that forever changed his life and came in handy in his long journey to Brazil. This text has won the João-de-Barro Brazilian Award for Children’s Literature in 2009 with honors by the jury.

This book brings together eight short stories inspired by the UN Millennium Development Goals, regarding the fight against hunger, child mortality, the struggle for education, gender equality, health of pregnant women, sustainability and partnerships for development, set up in stories based on folk tales and myths of different peoples. Illustrator Fernando Vilela (BRA 2007 for Lampião e Lancelote) dialogues with the visual vocabulary of cultures in a graphic project that surprises the reader with different balances between text and illustration. The stories were first published separately.

The writer and theater director Flavio de Souza presents young people, through a poetic language, to the ten principles of the Declaration on the Rights of the Child, a document signed by the United Nations in 1959 to ensure basic rights to children from around the world. The illustrations of the graffiti artist Rimon Guimarães, who has spread his lush colors on walls and buildings of various continents, giving the book the size of a public space. The dynamic graphic design includes space for reader’s participation.

In a light-hearted narrative based on actual news articles and stories, the writer Rodrigo Lacerda tells an original story about how global warming has brought about a sense of imminent doom for people on Earth and how we need to revisit our beliefs every day and the way we live.

“The House of Mother Joan” is the result of extensive investigation on the origins of some of the best known Portuguese idioms. It’s quite a collection of words, sayings, and brand names and their curious origins. None of the presented etymologies was made up solely for the sake of funny. All of them, with no exception, were thoroughly researched in articles and works by expert authors on the subject. At the end of the book, the selected bibliography lists the sources used for the sake of accountability.

“Portuguese: One Minute An Hour” is targeted at English speakers and students of PFL (Portuguese as a foreign language) seeking an overview of how the language works. This book will provide you with quick and significant tips on how to pronounce Portuguese words more accurately, how they are built and how they connect to English words, revealing details that will enhance your comprehension skills.

The book “¿Hablas Español o Portuñol?”, written in a light, easy-to-read style, presents typical situations resulting from the confusion that Spanish words like aula, azar, rato, motorista, fechar, ligar, cadera, cachorro and embarazada, among so many others, can cause to Portuguese speakers – followed by clarifying explanations. In addition, there is an extensive glossary of false cognates and a section listing several Spanish grammatical structures that are often misleading to Portuguese speakers. An additional chapter contains several exercises, whose answers can be found at the end of the book.

The book “How to say anything in Portuguese” is the ideal guide for executives, professionals, students, and tourists who need to use the Portuguese language on a daily basis and in different situations. Idioms are organized in a logical and quick-toaccess manner, making the book a perfect guide for helping the reader to say the right thing at the right time. The book is focused on effective communication and may be used both as a quick reference guide and a study guide, regardless of the context and the reader’s language proficiency.

The “New Brazil Avenue” is geared to adolescent and adult beginners, of any nationality, who want to learn Portuguese the way it is spoken in Brazil. The book may be used in group or individual lessons.

On board a ghost train, Buu the Little Ghost and his creepy friends take us on a ride through the universe of mathematics. Presenting these concepts in an attractive way is crucial, especially considering that children have been immersed in the math’s environment since they start socializing. Being humorously illustrated with characters that inhabit preschool 4-6-year-old’s imagination, this lovely book has counting 1 to 10 and subtraction as great attractions and the whole rhyming text written in a playful tone.

This book about saudade – a word that only exists in Portuguese – subtly approaches the meaning and finitude of life. It leads to reflections on the value of relationships, on loss and grief, becoming a must-read for the whole family. The book points out: someone who feels saudade is never alone, because saudade has nothing to do with loneliness. Quite the contrary. Life is a big jigsaw puzzle and in the course of our story we build up saudade from everything that was important and left its mark on us. In the meantime, as we fit more pieces into life’s jigsaw, we gradually cease to feel saudade. Until it is complete. Then, we stop feeling and start spreading saudade.

The art of storytelling is very old; it started before the writing. In Africa the storyteller is called “griô”. He is the master of the arts and popular culture and has the role of bringing knowledge to the village. The author Silvana Salerno has visited Africa to understand its influence on our culture. In this book you will find African stories that helped in the formation of Brazilian culture. A rich and interesting reading, with beautiful illustrations!

This captivating book addresses issues related to children’s everyday life such as fear, grief, divorce and others, helping to awaken the healer in the little ones by means of touching stories told in verse. Discover the bird family that gets a new member when the mother bird hears a child crying. And Alex, the elephant who wanted to be elegant. And there is also the story of Clara, the ostrich who had two homes. And much more!

The tales in this charming book take the reader into a magical world. The stories point ways out conflicts, reveal a new pathway, provide examples of faith and overcoming, as well as identifying with problems. They help children to develop self-assurance, fellowship and courage, and at the same time “heal” negative feelings of pride, envy and wickedness. Above all, they bring the chance of a happy ending.

In the midst of reality and fantasy, this book invites us to explore the four corners of Brazil, with the most popular and fantastic creatures in the folklore of this country. Among them, the Amazon Boto, the backlander Saci and the forest guardian Caipora excite our imagination and curiosity about stories that remain for generations. After each story, Regina Drummond dedicates a space to tell curious facts about the characters and the Brazilian regions where they are from, offering historical, geographic and social details that place into context, the origin of their legends. A significant work that contributes to enrich the cultural background of children.

Absolute Sea and Other Poems

Author: Cecília Meireles

Author: Gilberto Freyre

The poems in this book, written in the 1930’s and 1940’s, bring us Cecilia’s memories of her Portuguese ancestors, the infinity of words, loneliness and the transience of everything, the nontransferable experience of death and the melancholy of love. The semantic field “Sea” is brightly turned into poetry. “It was always the sea”, the poet starts, being the sea a symbol of human impermanence in the heart of the world’s beauty. This is certainly one of the most important poetry books in Brazilian literature.

This book presents the lectures lead by Gilberto Freyre in the United States, in 1944. They both reflect Brazil’s growing importance in a world increasingly concerned about the potentially dramatic consequences of the contact between nations, cultures and religions, and also reveal a crucial moment in Freyre’s work. The race relations in Brazil, the differences between Brazilian regions and other issues of great importance in understanding the core of the Brazilian origin are brilliantly addressed by Freyre.

The poet Manuel Bandeira was a man of great culture. In addition to his poems, he has an extensive prose work, including chronicles, art criticism, and literary essays, which can be found in this book. Here, Bandeira writes about other writers, books, poets and poems, showing a deep and unique understanding of Brazilian literature. His approaches reveal the unsuspected link of literature with historical context, and also the relation of literature to other segments of national intelligence.

Ignácio de Loyola Brandão, one of the biggest names in Brazilian contemporary literature, celebrates his 80th birthday this year with this wonderful chronicles collection. He brings us memories from the city of Araraquara, São Paulo and other cities abroad. The reader will see that a better country is possible and that happiness could simply mean having some cake with a cup of coffee in the afternoon. Visions. Dates. Perplexities. Page by page, the book gets intense, mutant and unexpected, just as life. At the end, we will be different persons. If not better, braver, and certainly happier.

As a result of more than thirty years of writing and rewriting, Brazilian People is a seminal essay of an intellectual who analyses, with property and a clear and exuberant speech, the agony and the success of the Brazilian social development. He discusses the overseas expansion, the clash between Europeans and those who were subjugated by them, the inability of monarchic elites to deal with the issue of slavery, the flawed process of the country’s urbanization, etc. Darcy, after all, has a keen eye for the civilizations developed in Brazil thanks to the racial miscegenation process.

This book by recognized children’s literature writer Bartolomeu Campos de Queirós gathers twenty-five really fun poems. Thanks to his skills of manipulating words, its expressive power, and its rhythm and sonority, the texts assume a playful character. The creativity of puns and the linguistic game instigate intelligence and light up children’s imagination. Bartolomeu writes many surprises and with humor. He knows how to get kids’ attention so that they discover semantic and sound relations. Illustrations by awardwinning artist Orlando Pedroso.

The people of the small kingdom ruled by a big-little king were surprised one day by the announcement of an unusual contest. The award would be determined by the winner himself. A boy and a girl in love with books and words just tied. What will they wanted to win? The work has the purpose of encouraging young people to develop the taste for reading and writing.

A mysterious beat arouses the curiosity of two children: rhythmic and spaced sounds make up a kind of communication. At a time when there was no telephone, radio, television, mobile phone, computer or internet, children discover that the mysterious noise was actually a kind of language, a rare art of writing messages through the sounds. This book is a tribute to the telegraph operators, professionals who wrote and understood the language of dots and dashes, enabling communication between distant places.

In this small book on folklore, the reader will know a bit of tongue twisters, legends, jokes, riddles, rhymes, superstitions, phrases and popular dances. An immense cultural treasure the size of Brazil.

How much can faith do? May selfconfidence and positive thinking to solve the adversities of our existence have any financial value? Learn the story of a happy fisherman who had to show a king, jealous of others’ happiness, how having faith and trust in life is something priceless.

In this book, Ana Thaís presents readers with ten of her famous “stories of Thaizinha” - as requested by those who enjoy friendship. They are stories marked by humor and the unusual, childhood stories, which show how magical the art of narrating is. And it is up to us, readers, not break this chain and continue to narrate these tales they told me.

Work inspired by The LOUSE LEATHER, tale of the popular orality collected by House Krab. In the plot, the characters from the original story gain new identities and psychological profiles, working on plots woven so as to maintain the charm and the reader’s curiosity. The prose dominates the narrative, dosed with verses string. The text is divided into six chapters.

Mário de Andrade, a great Brazilian intellectual, was also a government employee. He took part in the creation of the São Paulo’s Department of Culture in 1935 when Fábio Prado was the city’s mayor. Andrade was the first director of the Department, firmly engaged in a popular and democratic cultural project for the State and even for the Country. A cultural project open to international exchange and integrated with other cultural expressions. This book gathers the bureaucratic documents that he drafted and shows his vigorous opposition and a severe criticism to the standard bureaucrats.

Usually performed in bars and public squares of the suburb of São Paulo, the “saraus” are organized around different artistic languages, but the focus is poetry. They show an invigorating aspect of the city’s culture among disadvantaged people and at the same time, they are an example of the transformation that enables a new form of social organization. This book portrays the following “saraus”: Sarau na Quebrada, Sarau Poesia na Brasa, Cooperifa, Sarau Elo da Corrente and Sarau do Binho.

A reference work for the historical understanding of the meaning, interpretation and esthetics of ex-líbris. Ubiratan Machado analyzes the ex-líbris printed since the 15th century, detailing their evolution up to the 20th century. He analyzes all kinds of ex-líbris, listing the major Brazilian artists as well as highlighting foreigners such as Jean Cocteau, René Lalique and Jules Grandjouan. The beautiful illustrations showcase ex-líbris by Albert Einstein, Victor Hugo, Joaquim Nabuco, the Goncourt brothers and Marcel Schwob, as well as the Baron of Rio Branco’s complete collection.

The book defines the distribution structure of the Political and Judiciary power in Colonial São Paulo, contributing to a better understanding of Brazil’s current situation. The author identified concurrent power networks, fighting each other for land and the right to exploit mines, crafts and commercial privileges. Different forms of government were analyzed, as well as the relationship between public and private interests, local and central powers, economic and political factors, the social hierarchy and the accumulation of wealth. Ludic Education - The Smile of Mathematics - vol. IV: Cognitive (Mental) Games in Mathematics Teaching-Learning

Author: Paulo Nunes de Almeida

The reform movement split the Church, leading off to an era of various denominations, to conflicts and to religious wars. Here the author presents the historical concatenations which led from reforms to ecumenical efforts, stressing the historical role of Christians: the defense of the Transcendent One against rationalism and immanentism; support of a moral law against positivism, relativism and separation between moral and the several human activities; and the subordination of these human activities to the person, saving him or her from dangers such as liberal and social individualism.

This volume - whose set brings together theory and practice, offering the educator the exercise of thinking about games in a conscientious and scientific way and of performing it as an act of educating, instructing and entertaining - presents dozens of cognitive games to be employed in the classroom as well as at home by the family. The use of these games has stirred enormous interest among teachers, parents and students, for they work with simple calculus, concrete and abstract, in a ludic and challenging way. It also offers a practice of social and affectionate relationships extremely important in life.

Mystics usually describe their experience of loving union with God using a nuptial or even straightforward erotic language. As for psychotics, they often give a religious meaning to their paranoiac deliriums. So the saint and the madman look one at the other. What does psychoanalysis have to say about that? Is it possible to differentiate between an authentic mystical experience and a psychotic one?

The present work was envisioned as a textbook for biblical Psalms courses in Theology and Science of Religion colleges, as well as supplementary information for personal meditation and for stimulating spiritual life through prayer and through religiosity practices.

This book gathers the wisdom of the great master in Spiritual Monitoring, Fr. Joseph Kentenich, and upholds it in the light of the experience of Carl Rogers, a renowned psychotherapist and a great exponent of Humanist Psychology. It is recommended to people who constantly deal with people; to people who guide lives; people who are sought after to “give advice”; who like to help; who live in communion with people; who are educators, counselors, comforters, confidants, pastoral agents or even a little of all that.

Gaston Bachelard stands out in the scenery of 20th century’s philosophy as the thinker who gave one of the most important contributions to reflection on creative imagination in its anthropological and esthetic meaning. In the so-called “nocturnal angle” of his thought, he investigates the different aspects of the human imagining activity, showing that through it an essential bond between man and the world is established. This book is an introduction to Bachelard’s esthetics and has as its conducting wire the notion of creative imagination through which it is drawn the Homo imaginans’ anthropological profile.

It’s not easy to find children that have never heard of the classic tales from Andersen, the brother Grimm and Perrault. Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Snow-White, The Ugly Duckling, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty and other stories are artfully “interpreted” through Mauricio de Sousa’s characters. In 2012, this artwork won a Bing Xin literature prize for children’s work in China. These works have also been launched separately.

The most internationally famous writer from Brazil is, without a doubt, Paulo Coelho. In 2004, he, who is known for writing to an adult audience, set apart 24 of his stories for Mauricio de Sousa to illustrate using characters from Monica’s Gang. The idea would be to modify the stories a bit for a younger audience. In recent research done in Brazil the two authors have been cited as being in the top ten most admired writers in the country.

From 1977 to 1982, Pelé, the most famous soccer player of all time was a character in the comic book world through Mauricio de Sousa’s ‘Pelezinho’ comic. In 2012, the title came back, re-launching the older stories. Other famous soccer stars have come to be represented in Mauricio’s stories; Ronaldinho Gaúcho, that has been launched in various countries and Neymar Jr. that has recently been transferred to Barcelona to play.

Since 1970, the comic book Monica has passed through the editors Abril, Globo, and Panini. This has become one of the longest running comic in Brazil (there are more than 500 editions), with continued excellent sales. The character is such a success that she has become an ambassador for UNICEF (she is the only character to have such an honor), for Culture and Tourism in Brazil. Her comic book is also published in English and Spanish.

In 2008, Mauricio de Sousa took yet another bold step when he launcheda comic book with his classic characters having become adolescents (at 15 years old), meshing his own style with that of Japanese Manga. It was a huge success! Monica Teen has become the most sold comic book in Brazil in the last 30 years, reaching impressive figures, such as 500 thousand copies sold per month. It also has an English and Spanish publication.

Graphic MSP is line of publication that involves other Brazilian artists creating storylines based on the classic characters from Mauricio de Sousa. It is a widely praised line with a target audience of teens and adults. As of now there have been seven albums published and is in its seventh month of production.

My Sweet Orange Tree

Author: José Mauro de Vasconcelos Cover Illustrator: Rui de Oliveira Illustrator: Jayme Cortez

The world may be made out of colors, but none of them compares to Flicts. A rare, frail and sad color that doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere, for it has not made friends with the other colors, which despise it. Can you picture Flicts among the other colors in the rainbow?! No way! Cast off, Flicts gazes at the sky and up it goes: finally, it can see the world from up above and decides it has found its righteous place. Flicts is a poetic, though unassuming, narrative about the essential need to respect the differences.

Six year-old Zeze is poor, intelligent and sensitive. As he can’t find the love he craves for at home, he walks along the streets playing all kinds of pranks. He learns everything by himself and devises a fantasy world of his own where his great confidant is Xururuca, an orange tree. This is one of Brazilian Children and Youth Literature greatest classics of all times.

Dreams in Yellow The Boy Who Did Not Forget Van Gogh

THE LEGEND OF SU

Nino, the Saturn Boy

Author: Tiago de Melo Andrade Illustrator: Claudia Kfouri

Author and Illustrator: Ziraldo

This fictional narrative creates a whole relationship between painter Vincent van Gogh and Camille Roulin, one of the children depicted in The Roulin Family group of portrait paintings. In the story, Camille is a boy whose life is filled with enchantment, paintings and dreams, as he nurtures a rather close relationship with the Dutch painter in the time during which he produced his most important works.

The Legend of Su tells the story of a kingdom where there weren’t either schools or books. Su was governed by a wise, selfish and tyrant man, who used to control the sources of knowledge and make subjects undergo his subordinations and whims. People, unhappy, seemed to have no better choice. But when Crasso, a pretty clever and devoted young man, is chosen to sculpt the statue of the dictator, comes the chance to change the kingdom’s political and social scene. An entertaining story about the monopoly of knowledge, an essential book to form young readers politically and morally.

Nino loves sliding through the space and rings of Saturn on his surfboard. But one day, without any explanation, the rings dawned totally colorless. What might have happened? Nino then goes in search of a solution to solve this mystery. He will travel to Earth, where he finds artists who will recover the color of the rings of Saturn, his beloved planet, with their magic paints and colors. Ziraldo introduces the very young readers to the greatness of master artists’ creation, such as Guignard, Picasso, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Klimt, Pollock, Matisse and Miró.

CLINICAL ENDODONTICS USING THE OPERATORY MICROSCOPY VISION, PRECISION AND PREVISIBILITY

IMPLANT PROSTHODONTICS BASED ON SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCES

Odonto SOS Medical Emergencies

Fixed Prosthesis – Ceramic Protocol

Reconstructing the smile – Science, art and technology

Author: Renato Aló da Fontoura

Author: Pablo Caetano

There is nothing more updated than the performance of clinical endodontics having excellency, based on vision, precision and previsibility. Those concepts are the key in order to understand the true revolution that the contemporary endodontics is passing thru over the last decades. We can, for sure, state that the real radical change of that specialty does not just result from the introduction of new materials and techniques, but, in fact, from the utilization of these three primordial concepts, so well presented and exemplified in this book, up to the last consequences in our daily practice.

The contents of this book have a didactic development which starts as from the concepts and the scientific fundamentals of the prosthesis over implants, with emphasis on the reverse planning. It presents, in the second part, clinical and laboratorial recommendations, from the examination of the patient up to the search for the aesthetics and the technological innovations such as the CAD/CAM, not disregarding the success key, for the buccal rehabilitations, which is the occlusion. And, in the third part, it points out the importance regarding the maintenance of the prostheses over implants in the sense of giving them longevity.

This new book, which has 20 chapters, analyzes medical emergencies in the odontological practice and it has important concepts regarding the prevention, the diagnosis and the treatment of the main medical emergencies that might occur during the dentistry procedures. For sure, this book will fill a big gap in the teaching of the odontological practice.

I have always believed in the technique and in the experiences shared among professionals; learning by mistakes and trying to avoid them in subsequent times, trying to find a way to work more easily, differently and with higher quality. In the present book, I bring techniques from my experiences, which were developed over several years, based on mistakes and successes, applicable to the daily activities; I try to present the information in a clear and detailed way to my best capacity.

The utilization of new techniques and technologies make those the twelve hours I spend daily at my practice increasingly more professionally pleasant due to the patients´ satisfaction, mainly regarding the celerity for the solution. With the present book, I am sure I can share experiences with my colleagues, collaborators, scientists and technicians from various fields of knowledge, who do basic research at the universities and research institutes.

The 20 chapters of this book give us a clear and necessary vision for the right and multidisciplinary planning in all of the cases, being unitary or multiple, of higher or lower complexity. While some chapters analyze the necessary care for atrophic jaws, others cover possible complications in those cases. The contribution of the biomaterials to help the regenerative processes is also reviewed, from the xenogenous bone to the use of BMP.

The power of the palm

Author: Vanina Starkoff Illustrator: Vanina Starkoff

Author: Anabella López Illustrator: Anabella López

In 1770, Esperança Garcia, a black slave who learned to read and write with the Jesuit priests, wrote one of the oldest letters, speaking out about the abuses suffered by slaves in Brazil. In fact, her letter is probably the first of such letters. Sonia Rosa’s prose and Luciana Justiniani Hees’s beautiful illustrations tell this tale of resistance and freedom. Youngsters can learn that no matter how bad a situation is, it is small when compared with the power of the words.

A lovely metaphor of life. Joys, friendships, loneliness or difficulties. For all that we will pass. The important thing is to go ahead and never stop sailing.

This book tells us a legend from Magreb about overcoming. Ben Sadok, an evil and jealous man, couldn’t stand the beauty of the world. The joy and love of others bothered him deeply. But the beautiful tree was able to work around the barriers imposed by the evil man and grow strong and beautiful. A simple and exciting tale.

OMBELA, the story of the rainfall

Water eyes

The beautiful darkness

Author: Conceição Evaristo

Author: Ondjaki Illustrator: António Jorge Gonçalves

In this story, Ondjaki invents a myth that explains the “origin of rainfall”. This is the story of a goddess named Ombela who learned how to make it rain using her tears. How her father taught her how to cry, how her tears would be salty or sweet, creating lakes and seas, feeding the earth with the water needed. At least that’s what the older ones tell us…

In Water eyes, with no idealization, the hard life conditions face by the afrodescendants in Brazil is recreated with talent and firmness. Conceição Evaristo is Master in Brazilian literature and Doctor in Comparative literature. This book was awarded with the Jabuti Prize in 2015 in short stories category.

This book is about the beauty of meetings. A young couple takes the time to talk about their lives during a blackout in the city and, so, they get to know each other better. A story written by the Angolan prize winner Ondjaki about the not-spoken things, but which leave the young hearts fearless of the darkness.

To answer these questions, Marcelo Duarte combined his passion for the Olympic Games and for curious facts in order to depict the data from the thirty editions of the worldwide competition in beautifully designed infographics.

The boat of dreams

Pê and the vast world

A spectacular evening

Visit to the whale

Author: Marcos Bagno

Author: Rogério Coelho

Author: Paulo Venturelli Illustrator: Fereshteh Najafi

Authors: AnnaLaura Cantone and Adriano Messias

Author: Paulo Venturelli Illustrator: Nelson Cruz

Nelson Cruz’s Visual haikus unites the beauty and simplicity of a haiku, the playfulness of a newspaper comic strip and the brevity found in both types of text. The book presents ten short, silent stories that invite us to a surprising journey in the company of René Magritte, the painter of dreams, King Kong, coming straight from the movie screen, and Alice, from Wonderland.

This book by Marcos Bagno is an ode to a deceased brother and recounts “stories” of a simple life dignified by his connection with nature. In this narrative, the tragedy of his death is perceived from a sensitive point of view. With no drama, as a learning and growth experience.

The boat of dreams is a charming narrative in which reality and dream are mixed. The beautiful images in this book reveal the magic that can arise from a blank sheet, at the hands of an old man or a young boy, thanks to the mysterious correspondence between both characters.

This book enabled a fruitful meeting between Brazilian writer Paulo Venturelli and an illustrator from another corner of our vast world, Fereshteh Najafi, an Iranian artist. Together, they tell us the story of Pê, a small and curious boy who is surprised by the immensity of the universe. Pê accepts the challenge of delving into himself to find out the size and ways of his own being.

From the script by the writer Adriano Messias, the awarded Italian illustrator AnnaLaura Cantone created images for this fun and absorbing narrative in which several animals come together to live a very special evening.

Author of The Hoarse Angel and Brave new egg, Paulo Venturelli presents us with this delightful text in which desires and doubts come to light through the gaps of imagination. A boy had just finished his homework when his father stepped in, saying there was a whale downtown. The news soon caught everyone’s attention. How could this be possible as they were far away from the sea? It did not take long for them to head to the city center in order to see the whale with their own eyes. With a good dose of humor and great illustration by Nelson Cruz, Visit to the whale is a book you can’t stop reading until the very end.

Documentary photography has always been the main objective of my work. I photograph the stage where I present and tell fascinating stories of the Brazilian people, their culture, religion, belief and unbelief. Party, Folklore and Faith are my perspective, what I feel and what I think; the sum of what I experienced and lived since I was a child; a playful universe that adds to the expertise I have acquired throughout my professional life as a photographer and documentary filmmaker.

Suddenly, leafing through an old book, I experienced the same insane impression that young man bought a famous mascara, went on the eyelashes and said, “I feel someone else!” It seems facetious, but it denotes how a seemingly simple act can cause changes. On seeing myself with this “cosmetic” item used in early days, there is someone else I saw in the mirror lost in time.

As Mother, Educator, specialist in Braille and Pounds, I seek to present in this second book the importance of inclusion and relationship (family, school and community) to learn from our children. A human being with family, supportive, tolerant ties, autonomy with critical thinking and ethics training. So, I thank all the professionals who combined to produce this book and dedicated this work to all who support the inclusion, use and dissemination of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras).

The first time the girl went to the beach and saw the vastness of the sea, she realized that there were still a lot of different things in the world for her to see. Water, sand, colors, people…A sea of people, ideas, discoveries, which gradually reveals life’s surprises, keeping the flame of curiosity lit. What comes next?

You may think that a paper house is something frail — made out of cardboard and crêpe paper or perhaps a more creative combination like newspaper and cellophane, incapable of lasting through the years and exposed to the whims of time. It may be blown down in a second or turn to ashes if thrown into a fire. Is that so? Oh, don’t be fooled! A paper house is made of pure sentiment, from the warmest childhood memories, from the desire to live in that cozy little corner among words, the freedom to give wings to one’s imagination. Here’s your key. Come in, make yourself comfortable. This house is yours.

A beautiful narrative about childhood. A child dreams of flying a kite. It’s a lovely and clear day. Similar in structure to the popular tales of oral or written tradition, the pictures in this book tell a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end, where the character has to go through some challenges until once again reaching the same balance from the beginning, or not. Don’t be spooked, there’s a sequence suggesting a war scene, prompting the idea “it must be what it looks like”. But it is only imagination. It represents the crossing/cutting of kites, a facet particular to this recreational activity. Those who have tried it know what it is about. Let the kite of your imagination fly and have fun.

There was a time when all birds were white and the world was not as fun. Mrs. Owl then had an idea: she gathered paints to color some fabrics and clothing items, but ended up dying her own feathers. Other birds were delighted. They arrived in flocks and asked for colors too. But something unexpected happened, changing history — and nature — forever. In a poetic and inspiring narrative, Lúcia Hiratsuka invites the reader to let his imagination run free, take flight and meander through words and brush strokes.

Cláudio grew up hearing his father play the bassoon, practicing the songs of the great festivals at home. Music was always present in his life, and the sounds of the world colored his family’s everyday life. This was so with birds, the songs his mother chanted, the train’s pounding noise, and even the sounds of rain and wind. With a delicate and charming narrative combined with beautiful illustrations, Mandolin shows how the love of music may be passed down through generations, revealing similarities and differences, and above all enhancing the ties of affection.

A delicate and tender story about the birth of a puppy told in a way that leads the reader to believe it is actually the birth of a baby. “The boy has lived in the backyard house for nine years. I forgot to mention that Girl is the youngest in the family, and her mother moved there when she was little, although she’s still so tiny that it doesn’t look like she could have a daughter. When the three are together no one can tell the difference. They play hide and seek, make a lot of noise, run up and down stairs, tease the adults, the animals, the children and the entire neighborhood. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are always a party in the house with the backyard. During playtime Girl is the most awkward. With her short legs, all plump, she could only be the funniest. No need for the colorful hat and the red nose, Girl is a proper clown.

The emotions and experiences which books may offer are limitless. Literature throws open doors and windows onto a fascinating mix of wisdom, curiosity and knowledge, supplying the reader with different ways to approach the world, thus preparing them to deal with diversity. Author and Illustrator: Joaquim de Almeida

A lap is always so nice - to sleep, to eat, to receive comfort.... It is nice for pets, for people, it doesn’t matter where. A plural portrait of how people and animals carry and comfort their little ones in different parts of the world, with an emphasis on warmth, protection, care and affection.

One of the largest continents on Earth, Africa is famous for its rich and diverse wildlife. It is home to the cheetah, the feline faster than a gust of rain, and the mandrel, a primate whose face resembles a Carnival mask. These and other fascinating species are paid tribute in fun poems and beautiful illustrations, highlighting the importance of preserving the environment and its fauna and flora.

Pablo loves animals and is enchanted with a female duck at the country farm hotel where he is traveling with his parents. The problem is that the duck could care less about him. However, friendships sometimes are formed in the most unusual ways. All the boy had to do was sink his feet into the mud to find a unique and very fun way to relate to the bird.

Maria is small, restless and loves to give kisses. She likes the ocean and maps. She talks to herself, swears she has the sun in her belly and she flies... Maria is in love with the world and wants it all for herself. A delicate book written in poetic prose about the way a child perceives space, objects and people, and about how he or she relates to them.

About a father and daughter who frequently visit the park. They hang from bars, slide and run together. They fall and laugh. They find themselves surprised. And they journey far, very far with their imaginations. This is how they fill their pockets with life and overstuff the drawers of the world with happiness. A poetic and vibrant story about a father’s love for his daughter.

Olofi created the world of all things, including Lie and Truth. The first gave beauty power, while the other did the opposite. Everything was going smoothly, until Lie finds Envy, who convinces her that she is at a disadvantage with regards to Truth, creating a irremediable conflict. Adaptation into HQ language of the African tale about the creation of the world.

In this new book, Rita Lobo presents sixty recipes, recommendations, cooking techniques and home economics tricks from the “Basics” season of the program Cozinha Prática (Practical Kitchen), on GNT TV channel. A cooking course in thirteen chapters very well explained and illustrated. Do you know someone who still runs away from the kitchen? Are you this person? This book can change your life. #Desgourmetiza, bem! (#Gourmetdown, darling!)

Considering the Atlantic Forest as a background and based on the certainty that the preservation of the Brazilian forests is essential to the survival of all living species, this book approaches the history of cocoa in south of Bahia and the production of chocolate that the authors manufacture. Historical documents, photos, paintings and collages form the language found to tell these facts with a beautiful graphic project.

Chico Bento also has his culinary preferences. A simple character, portraying the countryman, lover of the country guitar and wearing a straw hat, Chico Bento shows us the typical rustic food. With his simplicity, he presents part of a rich gastronomical culture and its dishes of substance. Through his stories, we get to know this rural universe, in which the natural still reigns over the industrialized food world.

Guava, cajá, umbu, peach, strawberry and tamarind jams; citron and papaya soft sweets; pine seed, heart of palm, pear and pequi pickles; sardela and alicella… Recovering all this flavor and color from north to south of the country, Brazilian Pickles comprises more than fifty recipes you can make in your own kitchen.

COMMUNICATING WITH COLORS A scientific approach through visual perception

Authors: Leandro Poloni Dantas and Ricardo Arroio

Author: Paula Csillag

Introduction to Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies. In order to provide multidisciplinary education to their students of all levels, our institutions have implemented the “Programa SESI SENAI de Educação em Nanociência e Nanotecnologia” (a program devised by SESI SENAI on education in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology). Publishing this book is one of the actions undertaken by this program. Conceived by internationally recognized Scientists, this writing enables the access to a knowledge generated by Nanoscience and Nanotechnology by presenting theoretical texts and exercises focused on the fields of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Digital Electronics - Digital techniques and programmable logic devices. As it is divided into ten chapters, the reader is gradually lead to a deep understanding of Digital Electronics. It discusses principles and foundations such as: basic circuits, techniques for creation and development of digital circuit designs, technologies used in the manufacture of digital devices and more. For a better content comprehension, it brings a series of exercises at the end of each chapter.

Communicating with Color. By transiting the fields of Design, Art, Psychology and Neurology, Paula Csillag consolidated an original analysis methodology, helping us to increase the use of colors. This model – created by the author and result of a research supported by the Centro de Altos Estudos da ESPM (ESPM University higher studies center) – has been presented in an international conference in the United States in 2007, with its article being awarded and voted as the best in the Book of Selected Readings. From such perspective, and based on scientific studies, Csillag describes principles that guide the application of color in visual communication from more conscious choices, which do not rely solely on intuition or on the talent of artists.

Candomblé in Bahia

Author: José de Jesus Barreto

A patchwork quilt of Bahian life. Perhaps that is the best summary of this romance. Zulmira is the face of what it means to be from the state of Bahia. People from Bahia transcend the simple way of living just to live; they pass through the rocks and thorns of life without scratching themselves; they radiate human warmth and charm, despite all of life’s everyday traps. Zulmira is all charm and magic, wisdom and joy, overflowing, overcoming and transforming love.

This dance company embodies Bahia’s cultural heritage. Throughout the years, the Folkloric Ballet of Bahia has rescued, maintained and presented several popular cultural expressions through dance. The Folkloric Ballet of Bahia has recovered the legacy of people’s symbolic imagery through scenic spectacles inspired by sacred rites, commemorative celebrations and daily work practices. This is then articulated in various forms of dances, songs, rhythms, dramatizations.

The intention of this book by José de Jesus Barreto is only a starting point, to light a flame, erase the fear and, with the permission and the blessings of the Orishas, to open a door, to perceive, without prejudice, a different, magical and real world, one that is rich and little known, even though it is a part of everyday life: religion and the worship of Orishas in Candomblé temples of Bahia.

Others’ Women: Christian Travelers in Oriental Countries (XIIIth to XVth centuries)

Author: Susani Silveira Lemos França

This collection of contributions, organized by Marta Arretche, discusses one of the most important Brazilian issues: inequality. The 14 essays try to go beyond the realm of mere speculation to describe a dense and complex panorama of trajectories of inequality ranging from 1960 to 2010. In order to do so, the authors strictly follow the statistical data of the Demographic Census produced by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics on the period. The resulting picture is both accurate and dramatic.

North Korea is often portrayed as a caricature in the West, disseminating the image of a closed regime, on the brink of debacle, with an irrational elite which oppresses the people, subjected to famine, while fortunes are invested on a megalomaniac nuclear project. Beyond such a perspective, this book delves into issues such as the current stature of the North Korean regime and the complexities which characterized the entire revolutionary process and turmoil in Southeast Asia. This title is part of the Coleção Revoluções do Século 20, organized by the historian Emília Viotti da Costa.

The financial crisis that erupted in 2007 in the United States has created doubts about the global economic system in which the crisis depicts predictable happenings instead of contingencies. With analytical precision, Luiz Alfonso Simoens da Silva investigates the innards of this contemporary dilemma, avoiding shortcuts, examining possible alternatives for countries such as Brazil, where the effects of permanent financial instability tend to be more dramatic.

In this edition, Reginaldo C. Moraes rejects usual analysis and commonplaces to present a rigorous analysis of the historical development of American top-level education system, from the years 1800. With vast statistical documentation and bibliographical references, the author’s goal is to unravel the formation of a complex structure which has faced challenges: rearing of elites, incorporation of immigrants and their Americanization, provision of a qualified workforce, creation and innovation.

This book depicts an unusual perspective on women’s studies in history. The main intent is not only to revisit the documents produced by Christian travelers throughout the East, between the XIII and XV centuries, to reveal gender oppression or inequality of relations between the sexes, but the nuances of the point of view of Christian men about women observed from afar, sometimes with indifference. The reports analyzed encompass a broad geographical – from China to North Africa, for example – and temporal spectrum, and unveil basic elements of the fundamental item which grounds them: the Christian faith and Christian postulates on gender.

“You´ve entered in my life and everything has changed. Now, I declare my eternal love in words and pictures”. A book to celebrate the love in all its faces.

Childhood is a part of the life that is full of stories. Unusual tales that kids believe as if they were real. However, it is time to say STOP! The reader now has in its hands a selection of texts that will unmask the great lies. Be ready parents, uncle, teachers and other adults full of small talk. Your day as liars are about to finish. With valuable information (or not), The book of lies is a definitive guide. Fun facts for everyone.

With fine words and beautiful drawings, this book pays homage to the lies knotting mother and daughter. A delicate statement that speaks of the highest love that exists: the one that a mother feels.

The delicious recipes of one of the world´s most renowned restaurants. Located in Jose Ignacio, a small coastal town 30 Km from Puntal del Este, La Huella has turned mandatory reference for tourists and cuisine lovers. With photos of Eric Wolfinger

How to grow out of the dark? There are many types of fear: large and small, real and imaginary. They scare us all the same. With drawings and texts that delicately translate those feelings, The book of fear was created by the acclaimed Argentinean author Rachel Cané. A book for children to discover how to lose the fear of fear, the fear of reading, the fear of art and the emotions that it evokes.

One day, a girl decides to challenge the urban traffic. With her bike, she stops in front of cars and motorcycles, blocking circulation. A necessary pause to think about the uses of spaces in big cities. A modern cumulative rhyme.
