MISSION STATEMENT:

JUNE, 2013

“KNOW CHRIST… GROW IN CHRIST… AND GO AS CHRIST INTO THE WORLD”

MISSIONS/MISSIONARIES I am glad to report that we are moving ahead with support of missions in a variety of ways. The council has agree to support the NALC missionary Matthew Riak in his work in South Sudan. As a child, Matthew escaped persecution in Sudan as one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan.” He is now returning as an NALC missionary to establish St. Luke’s Theological College in South Sudan. While he is endorsed by the NALC, the World Mission Prayer League will be the mission agency that oversees his support. Our guest last May, Jake Gillard, informed us of their work and how they support missionaries throughout the world. These are important partnerships which I hope we can really get behind. The council also agreed to find ways to support a mission congregation of the NALC, Falls Community Church of Sioux Falls. They are a congregation primarily made of immigrants from South Sudan who left to escape religious persecution and violence. Finally, the local effort to create a new food pantry is moving forward with 19 of the necessary 20 members committed and the search for a director underway. Each of these initiatives gives us significant ways in which we can be obedient to the Lord in the care of his people. You’ll be hearing more of all these efforts in the months to come. Peace be with you all… Pastor Belleque

With June hopefully being our first month without snow, it’s time to say thanks to our this year’s snow busters crew. Thanks to:

Al Gangl Daryl Evenson Collin Hanson Linda Hanson Jason Hanson Norman Hanson Jim Johnson

Thanks to our Sunday School teachers and to Sally Dahl for leading the effort. Thanks! Janie Chepulis James Belleque Nikki Belleque Becca Dahl Sally Dahl Jason Hanson Lisa Johnson Stephanie Johnson LeNae Lee Lana Mitchell

FROM OUR PRESIDENT "So never lose an opportunity of urging a practical beginning, however small, for it is wonderful how often in such matters the mustard-seed germinates and roots itself". Florence Nightingale We are just finishing up with a pretty hectic month for the Johnson household, although not as busy as those trying to farm or preparing for a graduation. It never ceases to amaze me how we go from not much happening to having several conflicting commitments. We now look forward to the summer and the many opportunities ahead of us. Our big occasion in May was our daughter, Stephanie's, confirmation. We ended up with a house full of family and it turned into a pretty big event. As we went through the ceremony at church and the other activities that weekend I had to reflect back on the opportunities we took advantage of to help Stephanie grow as a "person of faith" and solidify her beliefs as she became a teenager. I would have to say that her attendance at summer Bible Camps probably had the most impact on her growth in the faith. Sunday School, Confirmation and Bible School were also important to her, but Bible Camp was the biggest influence. At our last meeting, the Church Council approved scholarship money to help pay for kids that want to attend Park River Bible Camp this summer. I strongly encourage parents to consider this and contact the Pastor if you have questions. I also encourage families who are looking for a Christian environment for a week or weekend this summer to take a look at what Mount Carmel Ministries in Alexandria, Minnesota has to offer. Lisa, the kids, and I went there for a music camp in 2008 and had a wonderful time. Take advantage of the opportunities you have. You won't be sorry you did. May God's peace and joy be with you! God Bless. President Clark Johnson

ATTENTION YOUTH Exciting news for the kids of the congregation. Since we’d like for the kids to have the chance to go to Bible camp, the council has agreed to pay basic registration fees for kids to go to Park River Bible Camp this summer. Their summer schedule is available on their web site or you can pick-up a brochure at church. This is a great opportunity to have a fun week in a faithful Christian environment. As a special treat for this year’s 1st and 2nd graders, we are taking a day trip to camp on Wednesday, June 26TH. We’re also looking for another chaperone for this trip. It’ll be a day full of fun, bring a friend! If you are interested, please contact Pastor Belleque by Friday, June 7th.

Ed Nesheim, Dave Egbert, Carolyn Hammond, Randi Anfinson, Norman Hanson, Lana Mitchell, Pastor Lyle and Judy Bennefeld. The meeting was opened with devotions by Pastor Belleque. Minutes of prior meeting on March 13, 2013 were read. A motion to approve the minutes was seconded, motion passed. Treasurer's Report submitted by Dave Egbert. He reported that the general giving for March was $13,372.00. Current balances are $11,134.17 for bldg/mortgage fund; $233.43 in missions and $28,684.43 in the operations fund for a total checking account balance of $40,052.03. Pastor's Report: I led Easter services at Heartland Care and Odd Fellows Nursing Homes. I have volunteered to join other local pastor's in leading Sunday services in these homes. We began a Bible Study of the book of Genesis the first week in April; it will be on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. I met with Karen Olson, the chair of the worship committee to discuss scheduling of ushers, readers and communion assistants, as well as oversight of altar guild functions. She will be looking to get people involved in these important ministries of the congregation. New microphones have been installed in the pulpit and lectern; have not received much feedback one way or the other on their performance. Membership changes: Member added through baptism: Josie Bracken, daughter of Shawn and Karla Bracken. Member transferring out: Gloria Bracken to her home in Montana. Cade Ritterman’s baptism is this coming weekend. Worship: Karen Olson is planning to separate the duties of ushers and readers so people can do either one, the other or both. Music: No performances planned until fall. We continue to look for people who would like to sing/perform during service. Education: A chairperson for Education is needed. April 28th is the last day of Sunday school, carnival plans are in progress. Bible school plans were discussed, possibly may share with Starkweather, will have two age groups, may include a sleep-over, fishing lessons, etc. Also considering VBS held in the evenings. Youth: The confirmands will hold a play during the Mother's Day service. Discussed scholarships for attending bible camps. Property: Building improvements needed should be brought to the attention of Norm Hanson. He will be lining up families that will assist in grass cutting, a riding lawn mower and gas will be provided. A motion to begin concrete work at the west-side entrance was seconded, motion passed. Benevolence: Ed Nesheim reported that $4,943.00 was donated for the water project and should be enough to buy an entire well. Fellowship and Caring: A chairperson is needed. The confirmation banquet will be held on May 15th. We have eight Confirmants. Old Business: Discussed options for a Peace Lutheran Church Directory, trying to keep it local and not so expensive. The Donations and Memorials Policy was further discussed. New Business: Spring cleaning will be held on May 11th. Wycliffe Bible Translators may visit our church. Next meeting will be held on May 8th. Clark then asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion to adjourn was made, the motion passed. The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Judy Bennefeld, Secretary

From time to time we receive anonymous prayer requests in the office. Please understand that those

requests will be included in the pastor's personal prayers, but will not be included in the published or public

prayers. If you would like someone included on the published list please include your name or speak to Pastor Belleque directly.

WOMEN OF PEACE The Women of Peace met May 7, 2013. No official meeting was held as the women assembled school kits and layette kits for Lutheran World Relief. We will be packing the kits up on May 13, 2013. The next meeting will be June 4, 2013 with Darlene Zimmerman, hostess and Sandy Maloney, devotions leader. Respectfully submitted, Jean Frykman

Over the next three months, Women of Peace are asking your help in collecting needed items for the Safe Alternatives for Abused Families- -SAAF House here in Devils Lake. Any help will be greatly appreciated. For the month of June: laundry detergent, dryer sheets, bleach, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, paper towels, trash bags, non-perishable food items SAAF cannot purchase, snack items such as fruit snacks, pop, chips, cookies and other kinds of snacks. Thank you!

If anyone is interested in sewing quilt tops, we have assembled kits with the rows marked so it is very simple. We also have a grab out of the bag quilt kit for those who would like a bit of a challenge! We have included how many squares in a row as well as how many rows the quilt should be. If you are interested, the kits will be in a marked box on the floor by the SAAF House tub in the narthex. Thanks!

A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE WOMEN OF PEACE – Quilts were displayed on Sunday, May 12th on all the pews plus baby care kits, personal care kits, school kits and fabric kits. In 2012, LWR distributed 412,712 mission quilts. Besides being used for bed coverings, these quilts might be a baby carrier tied around the mother’s neck, market display for selling their fruit, vegetables, whatever they are selling by spreading it on the ground, sunshade, sack for transporting goods to market or shawl. The quilts and kits are distributed where there is need and they were concentrated in Africa, Central America, India and surrounding countries by India.
