From the Property Committee—If you have not noticed, the decorative finials above the center doors of St. Michael Church have returned to their place of prominence after two years. You may recall the original elements had to be removed due to their deteriorated condition and found to be unstable for restoration. A decision was made to have replicas made. Jeff Johnson, a local professional conservator, was commissioned to replicate two new finials using a mold from one of the original finials. Jeff did a remarkable job in producing exact copies, both in color and texture. Because Jeff Johnson took such an extraordinarily long time to complete the project, he has advised St. Michael that he will not bill for his services rendered. As a result, a large portion of the funds that SM members donated for the project ($2,600, less the $300 cost of renting a lift for reinstalling the finials) will be appropriated to help fund the restroom project. We are very pleased to have our church entrance restored to it's historic appearance.

Welcome to St. Michael Church PRAYERS BEFORE WORSHIP O God, whose name is holy of itself, we pray that it may be hallowed also by us. To this end help us, O Blessed Father in heaven, that your Word may be taught in truth and purity, and that we, as your children, may lead holy lives in accordance with it; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen (Martin Luther) O God, everlasting Father, whose kingdom comes of itself, we pray that it may come also unto us. To this end give us your Holy Spirit, so that by his grace we may believe your holy Word, and live godly lives here on earth and in heaven forever. Amen (Martin Luther)

WORSHIP NOTES On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ—the good news—that makes us free! We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord’s table.

Persons with impairments - St. Michael offers to anyone with a hearing difficulty a small, remote personal speaker. We invite our guests who may need this to ask an usher for one. We welcome any comments concerning St. Michael's efforts to accommodate persons with impairments or disabilities. An enlarged copy of the bulletin is available. Please see an usher if you would like to use one.

PORK AND SAUERKRAUT DINNER—Please join us today in the Fellowship Hall after service for our annual Pork and Sauerkraut Dinner. There will be roasted pork, homemade sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, apple sauce and desserts. There will be a free will offering for the pastoral care fund. SOUL FOOD—Part Two of our four-part discussion of racism will be today after worship. We will have our traditional Pork and Sauerkraut meal (Thank you Lindsay Mills!) followed by our discussion of “Christians and Racial Justice, Part 2.” Our study guide can be downloaded here: https:// sojo.net/sites/default/files/wysiwyg/DG_racialjustice.pdf. Limited copies are available in the narthex. ALL SAINTS DAY—We will celebrate the Festival of All Saints Sunday, November 6. A display is set up in the upper narthex remembering all those persons who have lived and died in the faith. You are welcome to share your photos of those who have blessed your life. Also, the Book of the Names of the Dead is available for you to list the names of loved ones. These names will be lifted up during the Intercessory Prayers for the Festival of All Saints’ Day. THANKSGIVING FOOD COLLECTION FOR LOAVES OF LOVE— The Thanksgiving holiday will be here before you know it. In past years our congregation generously provided the Loaves of Love Ministry with cranberry sauce and Stove Top Stuffing, items not provided by the PA Food Bank. This year LOL has again requested Stove Top Stuffing for Turkey but for a change, instead of cranberry sauce, Ramen Noodles. Ramen Noodles are a favorite of the clients and also and item not provided by the Food Bank. Loaves of Love is very appreciative of our ongoing support and generosity. Let's see if this Thanksgiving we can supply them with 70 boxes of stuffing and 70 packs of Ramen Noodles. The last day for collection will be Sunday, November 6th with distribution being on Wednesday, November 9th. GENERAL ELECTION DAY SOUP AND BAKE SALE—November 8 is Election day and St. Michael is the polling location for the 4th ward in Harrisburg. We will be selling homemade soup and baked items from 7am to 7pm. There will be approximately 500 people voting in this Presidential election at St. Michael so we will need lots of soup and baked goods. If you can provide baked goods or soup, we will happily package them for you. Donated items can be dropped at the church on Sunday, November 6, through Election day the following Tuesday. You can contact Lindsay (3157075) to let him know what you will be donating, to let him know if you will be able to work on the day of the sale, and to place an order for sale items. This can be a great fundraiser if everyone contributes. And remember that twenty percent of the proceeds go to Downtown Daily Bread.

The readings for Sunday, November 6, are Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18, Psalm 149, Ephesians 1:11-23, and Luke 6:20-31. We remember the following members and friends of St. Michael in prayer this week: William Buckner, Kevin Sheets, Clarence and Barbara Hawkins, Roy Smith, Art Cover, Jay, and Diana Pate.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the only Sovereign, who dwells in light; Christ Jesus, who came to save sinners; the Holy Spirit, who lives within us. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. God of overflowing grace, we come to you with repentant hearts. Forgive us for shallow thankfulness. Forgive us for passing by the ones in need. Forgive us for setting our hopes on fleeting treasures. Forgive us our neglect and thoughtlessness. Bring us home from the wilderness of sin, and strengthen us to serve you in all that we do and say; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

By water and the spirit we are baptized into the body of Christ and made members of his church We remember and rejoice with those who celebrate their baptismal anniversaries this week: Elizabeth Benion and Christopher Mladenoff, November 1, and Gregory Darr, November 3.

There is joy in heaven over every sinner who repents. By the grace of God in ☩ Christ Jesus, who gave himself up for us all, your sins are forgiven and you are made free. Rejoice with the angels and with one another! We are home in God’s mercy, now and forever. Amen.

COMMUNION HYMN

Soli Deo Gloria

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM

Psalm 46

The refrain is sung by the cantor, repeated by the assembly. The psalm is sung antiphonally by the cantor and assembly, beginning with the cantor. The assembly sings the refrain where marked.

God is our ref- | uge and strength, a very present | help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the | earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in the depths | of the sea; though its waters | rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble | with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad the cit- | y of God, the holy habitation of | the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall | not be shaken; God shall help it at the | break of day. The nations rage, and the | kingdoms shake; God speaks, and the earth | melts away. R The Lord of | hosts is with us; the God of Jacob | is our stronghold. Come now, regard the works | of the Lord, what desolations God has brought up- | on the earth; behold the one who makes war to cease in | all the world; who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the | shields with fire. “Be still, then, and know that | I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted | in the earth.” The Lord of | hosts is with us; the God of Jacob | is our stronghold. R SECOND READING

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his life given for us and his rising from the grave, we await his coming again to share with us the everlasting feast. By your Spirit nurture and sustain us with this meal: strengthen us to serve all in hunger and want, and by this bread and cup make of us the body of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Romans 3:19-28

Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For “no human being will be justified in his sight” by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God 6

COMMUNION Communion is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ's love. To receive communion the assembly approaches the altar rail by the center aisle in two rows. The pastor will place the host (bread) in your hand, an assisting minister will have the wine. You may receive the wine either by common cup, or from the

through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

John 8:31-36

The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy God, our Bread of life, our Table, and our Food, you created a world in which all might be satisfied by your abundance. You dined with Abraham and Sarah, promising them life, and fed your people Israel with manna from heaven. You sent your Son to eat with sinners and to become food for the world. 10

31

Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not have a permanent place in the house7

hold; the son has a place there forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”

CHOIR ANTHEM

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
