GATHERING WE PREPARE: In the waters of the Jordan, Jesus is revealed as the beloved Son of God. Through this great epiphany, Jesus fulfills all righteousness and becomes the servant of God who will bring forth justice and be a light to the nations. In the waters of baptism we too are washed by the Word, anointed by the Spirit, and named God’s beloved children. Our baptismal mission is to proclaim good news to all who are oppressed or in need of God’s healing. PARISH NOTICES/ BELL CALL TO WORSHIP Open the Eyes of My Heart In the Spirit CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who stretches out the heavens, who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection

Loving God, we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen. Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have messed up, God puts us together. God’s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, for the sake of ☩ Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY O God our Father, at the baptism of Jesus you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized into Christ faithful to their calling to be your daughters and sons, and empower us all with your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

WORD FIRST READING Isaiah 42:1-9 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you;

5

I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. The Word of the Lord; Thanks be to God. PSALM 29 Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due God’s name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the LORD is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon; the LORD makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. The voice of the LORD bursts forth in lightning flashes. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the LORD all are crying, “Glory!” The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forevermore. O LORD, give strength to your people; give them, O LORD, the blessings of peace.

He Come From the Glory

In the Spirit

GOSPEL Luke 17:11–19 The gospel is found in Matthew chapter 3, verses 13-17. Before Jesus begins his ministry, he is baptized by John, touched by the Spirit, and identified publicly as God's child. And now The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 3rd chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.” Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ 6

INSTALLATION OF JULIA COULSON, DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION After prayerful deliberation, Trinity has appointed Julia Coulson to serve in the position of Director of Christian Education. Our Lord Jesus, who came among us as a servant, calls us to faith and a life of loving service to our neighbor. You stand among us as one called to render a particular service, a gift from God to inspire us to study, teach and learn from God’s Word. Reading from Romans 12:4-8… For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Julia, will you assume this ministry in the confidence that it comes from God? I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you carry out this ministry in accordance with the Holy Scriptures and with the Confessions of the Lutheran church? I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you be diligent in your study of the Holy Scriptures and faithful in your use of the means of grace and in prayer? I will, and I ask God to help me. Trusting in God’s care, will you seek to grow in love for those you serve, strive for excellence in your skills, and adorn the gospel of Jesus Christ with a godly life? I will, and I ask God to help me. Almighty God, who has given you the will to do these things, graciously give you the strength and compassion to perform them. Amen. Let us confess the faith we teach together: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Almighty and ever-living God, as you called apostles and evangelists, prophets and teachers to instruct, comfort, admonish, and care for us, so you have called Julia to fulfill guiding this congregation in our learning your Word. Fill her with wisdom and patience, with love and faithfulness to your Word, so that with gladness she would guide, lead and teach your people to grow in Christ. Lord, in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer. For God’s people, the church…Lord, in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer. …trusting in your mercy through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. 8

THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORD Let us pray. O God of justice and love, we give thanks to you that you illumine our way through life with the words of your Son. Give us the light we need, awaken us to the needs of others, and at the end bring all the world to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever. Amen. LORD’S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

SENDING BLESSING May the love of Jesus Christ, the light of the world, fill your hearts and illumine your path. Almighty God, Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen. SENDING SONG

DEVOTIONS For your household devotion times this week, gather around a bathtub or a basin. Quietly listen to the sound of it being filled with water. Read Matthew 3:16-17. Share ways in which you have experienced God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – during the day. Conclude by dipping your hands into the water as you say this prayer together: “Lord God, thank you for making us your children and blessing us with your love today. Wash us clean for new life with you. Amen.”

SERVICE Ask your pastor or church office for the names of those baptized in your church in the past year. Prepare bookmarks, cards or notes of encouragement to give to these people (or their households). Express your thankfulness for their membership in God’s family through holy baptism.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS Share in a ritual of baptismal remembrance when you gather for meals this week. Place a bowl of water in the center of your meal table. Have each person dip a finger in the water and sign the mark of the cross on another’s forehead. Say these words to one another in turn: “Remember and be thankful. You are a baptized child of God, marked with the cross of Christ forever.” © 2015 Milestones Ministry, LLC. All rights reserved.
