BISHOP BRADY HIGH SCHOOL SERVICE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS The goal of requiring a service component in the Theology Curriculum is to establish a habit of service and to experience a conversion of heart in giving of ourselves to others. A successful program allows the volunteer to connect with the people he or she serves and to understand the purpose and need for giving of ourselves. All service should be personal and should emphasize the preferential option for the poor and vulnerable. These principles are inherent to the Gospel: “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, "I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’… The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25: 35-36, 40 Guidelines for Student Volunteers  

   

Service must be direct, one-on-one with an individual or group experiencing economic poverty or are otherwise disadvantaged or marginalized. Service is meant to place the recipient above all else. The volunteer sacrifices his time and talent to benefit another person or group. The one who receives the service offered by a student volunteer is made better for the experience. The process and experience through the four years of service should be progressive. All students are required to submit 25 hours of service each year. At least 20 of the 25 hours must be completed at the approved location. Up to five hours may be dedicated to service at Bishop Brady or at approved Bishop Brady activities. Service hours are done outside of the regular school day (before or after school, on weekends, or during scheduled holidays). No time off from school will be granted to fulfill service hours

Students may choose one of the following Service Options: 

Option 1: Summer Service completed by Labor Day

Option 2: Short term immersion project (ex. El Salvador, Habitat for Humanity or other mission trip)

Option 3: Long term service in one approved location over the course of a year

Bishop Brady Volunteer Guidelines Three Basic Steps 1.

Preparation: o Review the list of organizations and volunteer links in this manual or research other organizations that may meet your volunteer interest. o Contact the organization to discuss the volunteer opportunities available. o Complete the service contract. o Arrange your volunteer hours with the approved organization.

2. Service: o o o o

Be a good volunteer. Arrive on time as scheduled, be respectful to your volunteer supervisor. Complete service hours. Keep track of hours on your service log. Have your supervisor sign your service log EVERY TIME YOU VOLUNTEER

3. Reflection: o How did the experience affect those you served?

Please Note: Bishop Brady expects the student volunteer to: o

Conduct themselves with dignity during their service experience, and adhere to the guidelines expressed in the discipline code.

o

Act in any manner that would not be construed as goofing off or playing around.

o

Report any problems to the supervisor as soon as possible, and then upon return to school, inform your teacher. 3

Where Can I Do A Project? 

Service projects sponsored by your local parish/church. Your church may also be able to suggest other volunteer opportunities.

Up to five hours serving the Bishop Brady community for approved events.

Network – Your family or friends may have volunteer ideas.

Talk to friends at Brady about projects they’re thinking of doing.

Surf the web to find out about possible placements.

See what friends at other schools have done for their service projects.

Check the Bishop Brady Directory of service opportunities.

Service through Bishop Brady Interact (no fundraising or meeting time)

Where Can’t I Do A Project? Although worthwhile, the following are NOT approved service options 

Fundraising

Meeting time for service planning

Sports related activities (ball runner, assistant coach, etc…)

Liturgical Ministries (music, lector, acolyte, etc…)

For family and friends

Bishop Brady Service Days

Service Advice: 

Make a commitment to a program that challenges you to grow.

Be an agent. Invite people (even outside of your group of friends)

Make it a routine with your sports team… Don’t make service an obstacle

When you use the word “them”… you do not personalize. “They” become inanimate.

Get to know the individuals whom you serve! Know their names

When you describe the homeless, the hungry… Don’t judge. We have no clue…

Stories that you tell should always be about the service and client
