TOP SAFARI TIPS...

Chosen by...

1. Even though you are likely to get very close to the animals, a pair of binoculars is essential. It allows you to better see in detail; from the eyelashes on a giraffe to the colours on a particular bird.

Katherine Terry, Sales Consultant

Safaris in Africa Few experiences are more thrilling and rewarding than encountering wild animals in their natural environment. From witnessing the Great Migration pass through the Mara, giraffe and zebra roaming freely amongst the Big Five or huge herds of elephant frolicking in the Selinda Spillway, here is my selection of some of the best places to experience the different slices of Africa that stir the senses and the soul.

2. It is not a safari myth that bush pilots have been known to leave the luggage of over-packed guests at the side of the airstrip. Pack carefully and remember that most lodges do your laundry. 3. On open vehicles I find the seats immediately behind the ranger are the best. You can hear what the guide is saying more easily and it makes for a much better safari experience.

SOUTH AFRICA Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sand Game Reserve A firm favourite for novices and old hands alike, this is one of the best game-viewing areas in South Africa – you may not even have to leave your bed to get an incredible sight of its namesake animal. With only eight beautifully-appointed glass-fronted suites perched atop a rocky outcrop, thoughtful and attentive touches such as African poetry, weather notes and animal reference guides are placed in your room. Those with a passion for wildlife photography will be able to get various tips from their personal rangers who are all keen photographers themselves – it is not unusual to see all of the Big Five in a single game drive here. WHY GO? Arguably the best place to spot leopards in South Africa.

Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge, Madikwe Game Reserve On a practical level, South Africa can make real sense for families – there is no jet lag, the cuisine is of exceptional standard, English is widely spoken and malaria-free game viewing is available. The two-bedroom Little Madikwe private villa with personal butler, child-minder and private game ranger is ideal. Located in the middle of the reserve, guests have a huge advantage here over other lodges situated on the borders. Territorial leopard and cheetah guard the surroundings, whilst your ranger will go to every effort to help you spot the elusive wild dog. Animal tracking as part of the Junior Rangers programme will leave little ones enlightened about the bush. WHY GO? Look out for cheetah and wild dog here as they are easier to see than in Sabi Sand Game Reserve or Kruger National Park.

Clockwise from left:

Madikwe Hills, Zarafa Camp, Leopard Hills, Mahali Mzuri

TANZANIA One to watch: Roving Bushtops Bushtops is going mobile with the launch of this exclusive camp, due to open in January 2015 at the heart of the Serengeti. It promises to combine the glamour of its fixed sister properties with the excitement of game viewing on the move. Set on wheels, the true glory is that if the best game moves on, the camp can follow; tents can also be set up together for families and small groups. WHY GO? The migration is at its most powerful between April-June, with dramatic river crossings as the herds head north in search of new grasses.

KENYA Mahali Mzuri, Masai Mara A year on since its opening and taking a safari in Kenya to the next level, Sir Richard Branson’s first East African camp does not disappoint. Stretching the boundaries of what a tent and camp can be, the spacious suites are perched on raised platforms on the side of a lush valley providing sensational views over the rolling plains. Restricting the number of visitors allowed into the area at any one time and leaving as minimal a footprint as possible

08 / Call our specialists on 0161 826 2580 or visit www.carrier.co.uk/magazine

on the land, Mahali Mzuri provides guests with a natural and authentic safari experience. Appointing the best guides in the area – the majority of the team here are Masai and hail from local communities; Branson himself was made an honorary Masai Elder for his efforts to preserve the land and the Masai culture. WHY GO? The open landscapes – it looks and feels like the Africa you see in the movies.

BOTSWANA Recently opened: Zarafa Dhow Suites Within the Selinda Reserve, the much anticipated Zarafa Dhow Suites opened in May. One of the largest tents ever built in Africa, constructed entirely under canvas, it is set apart from neighbouring Zarafa Camp and comes with its own staff, ranger and vehicle, offering the utmost privacy. Take the opportunity to refine your photography skills alongside award-winning wildlife filmmakers Derek and Beverly Joubert, who live on-site. Each tent comes complete with a Canon professional camera and zoom lenses. WHY GO? The dry game viewing is on a par with that of the nearby Okavango Delta.

“MY COLLEAGUES TEASE THAT I MUST HAVE THE MAJORITY OF GENERAL MANAGERS ON SPEED DIAL – AND I DO!”

MORE ABOUT KATHERINE, OUR AFRICAN TRAVEL EXPERT… You could say I am not your average travel consultant. For over six years I lived, worked, ate and slept in the bush before the bright lights of Cape Town called my name. During that time, I was lucky enough to go on so many game drives that I have lost count and ended my time in the bush as the General Manager of a camp. Following that, I worked for 13 years for tour operators of various sizes before flexing my entrepreneurial muscles and setting up my own safari company. Of course, this experience has also led to me having great relationships with numerous contacts across the industry. My colleagues tease that I must have the majority of camp General Managers on speed dial – and I do! I am often asked why choose a safari. Aside from the obvious answer which centres on the fact that it is quite possibly one of the most emotive of holiday experiences you can have, they really can be tailored for all to enjoy. For those looking for a digital detox, nature in the raw is best experienced from authentic wilderness camps – stylish, distinctive, often family-run lodges await those seeking luxury accommodation and personal, thoughtful service. These include a family’s own butler, a dedicated ranger, personally tailored kids’ programmes and of course, gourmet alfresco dining including the finest wines. There are numerous consultants out there who can put together a safari trip, but I think my familiarity with this fascinating continent helps me to understand the requirements of my clients and create unique experiences. Whether you are planning your first safari, or your fifth, I love nothing more than personalising each trip, helping you to engage with something new each time and come home wanting to return again and again.

KITE SURF AT ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST LOCATIONS

BeINSPIRED

The St. Regis Mauritius Resort

/ CARRIER: / CARRIER: Talking points Edits

The thing that makes this corner of Mauritius so good for kite surfing is a blend of reliable, consistent wind, world-class waves and flat water lagoons. Would-be kite surfers can give the sport a go with help from the Mistral Prestige Kite Surf Club, whilst expert riders can challenge themselves on the famous ‘One Eye’ wave. Naturally, there is windsurfing as well, and the snorkelling has to be experienced to be believed. Lying in the lee of Le Morne Brabant Mountain, those seeking adventure on terra firma can join the local naturalist on a guided mountain ascent that starts at sunrise in order to avoid the hottest part of the day, or take a trip to the Black River Gorge and its Chamarel waterfalls. Too strenuous? Board a catamaran cruise and sit back with a cocktail while the crew do the hard work. Of course, all this presupposes that you can tear yourself away from the resort itself, with its lavish accommodations in the style of a Victorian sugar-baron’s manor house; irresistible restaurants including a new menu at signature restaurant, Simply India, by Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar and beautifully designed swimming pools. Following a thrilling day on the waves, indulge in a customised Kite Surfers Respite Massage – a typically thoughtful touch from the hotel. Or for nights in, a private cinema lies next to a large, well-stocked library.

Maverick Helicopters

FLY THROUGH THE GRAND CANYON

One of the most common responses we receive from travellers who have experienced a flight with Maverick Helicopters from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon is that they felt like they owned the place, such is the feeling of being whisked in style and comfort to the remote West Rim canyon floor where chilled Champagne awaits – no other helicopter operator lands as far or as deep.

TAKE INSPIRATION AND HEAD FOR UNIQUE RESORTS, UNCHARTED TERRITORIES AND TIMELESSLY CLASSIC DESTINATIONS.

On the trip to the Canyon, visitors overfly such sights as Lake Las Vegas, old copper mine workings, Hoover Dam and of course, the Colorado River, glinting like a silver ribbon below. The pace is leisurely – there is no rushing from place to place, just plenty of time to experience the pleasures of soaring so closely over so many must-see locations. Upon touch down, passengers are free to roam around as they please, take pictures, nibble canapés and quench their thirst before being helicoptered up to the rim to walk the horseshoe-shaped, heart-stopping Skywalk. The attraction is managed by the Hualapai tribe, and the trip includes an introduction to the Hualapai Indian legends and culture with a visit to a typical homestead. A sky-cam video system means visitors can even commemorate their trip with a personal video complete with pilot commentary. Discover more online... Further trips are available with Maverick, including tours over the Las Vegas Strip and the Valley of Fire.

La Villa Des Orangers, Marrakech

DISCOVER SERENITY IN THE CITY

A short walk from Djemaa el Fna, the frontage of this riad is marked by an ornately carved wooden door on a bustling street within the medina. As you cross the threshold, one step takes you from a world of energy, joie de vivre and exuberance into a sanctuary of quiet, tranquillity and calm. Instantly greeted by the sweet orange scented courtyards, inside, this highly ornamented dwelling with rare artefacts, African-themed paintings and iron sculptures all complemented with Berber carpets, will give you the impression of living in someone’s finely-styled home. Restored by the best craftsmen and authentic artisans in the city, look out for the passage with incomplete tiles – a reminder of how the beautiful hand-carved archways have been painstakingly created. Most rooms have stairways leading up to their own private terrace; views of the graceful 12th Century minaret of Koutoubia mosque from the rooftop pool is the only clue of how close to the main square you actually are. One of only two Relais & Châteaux properties in Marrakech, gastronomy here is a joy with guests being left to decide where and when to dine – evade the midday sun with lunch under the shade of banana trees on the patio or opt for dinner by the pool, surrounded by olive trees decorated with lanterns, whilst musicians gently strum away in the central courtyard. A huge traditional hammam offers guests the relaxation ritual essential in Morocco.

Universal Studios Hollywood

ACCESS ALL AREAS

The 50th anniversary of Universal Studios Hollywood this summer coincided with the theme park’s impressive five-year transformation, bringing a host of new attractions to the park, including Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and Transformers: The Ride-3D. The lavish VIP Experience allows guests to disembark the famous trolley cars for an ‘all areas’ access tour taking in current TV and film sets and the cavernous 100 year old ‘Prop House’ where over a million costume pieces and props are held. From learning about dubbing in the Sound Department to front of the line access to the best rides and shows, this is an experience worthy of any Hollywood diva. The Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, provides a perfect base from which to explore.

Santa Marina Resort & Villas, Mykonos

SOAKING UP ISLAND LIFE

“The sun shines for up to 300 days a year in Mykonos. This is reason enough to visit but once I discover that local law requires every building to be painted white, I’m sold. One of the biggest draws is Santa Marina and its 150 metre private beach, a rare commodity on Mykonos; I soak up its buzzy, busy vibe, cocktail in hand, splashing straight from sunbed to sea when the temperature rises. From every spot in the 20 acre grounds, I’m blown away by the 180 degree view; it’s what the panoramic setting on my iPhone was designed for…” Discover more online... 6 HOTELS FOR...

ART INSPIRATION There is a definitive synergy between art and travel and increasingly, we are finding that hotels are embracing this superlative relationship. Challenging the norm, art is becoming the new hotel accessory, serving to accentuate the concept that people do not want culture in prescribed pockets. Whether it is offering the services of an Art Concierge, painting classes with an artist in residence or providing a forum for upcoming artists, these hotels are indisputably serving the creative cognoscenti.

In a breathtakingly unique location on the glamour-infused island of St Barths, sits Eden Rock, an ultra-chic boutique bolthole with a truly distinctive soul. This is underpinned by the exhibition series within its beachside art gallery; set up by one of the owners, Jane Spencer Matthews. The Eden Rock Gallery showcases established names from the world of art – such as Richard Prince and Will Cotton – in addition to providing a forum for emerging artists to show their work. Highly regarded in design circles, the hotel has a genuine dedication to the arts, providing guests with a truly unique visual experience with hangings tailored to the interior design of every room. Fully immerse yourself in all things creative during your holiday and partake in painting lessons with one of the artists in residence, part of a programme created in partnership with the New York Academy of Art.

2 A hotel as a work of art

Icehotel

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden Created afresh each year by international artists, entirely hewn from ice and snow, the Icehotel is as unique as it is transient. Every October, like a paradoxical phoenix from the flames, the structure rises again, sculpted with the frozen water from the Torne River. Hundreds of artists from all over the world apply to design a suite at the hotel, with only a select few being chosen to be part of the creation process. As the building takes shape, all 40 artists spend time in the midst of the structure – the atmosphere oozing with artistic creativity, all inspired by ice as a material. This is an art project that is totally unmatched. Standing 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, the location of this temporary landmark also provides the perfect vantage point for the spectacular light show that is the Northern Lights.

4 3 An Art Concierge at your service

Le Royal Monceau Raffles Paris France An Art Deco gem and a grand hotel since the 1920s, Le Royal Monceau Raffles has rediscovered its former élan with a Philippe Starck makeover and an infusion of contemporary art. In fact, so imbued with art is this hotel, that seemingly every opportunity to display works is taken; a monumental teapot by Joana Vasconcelos sits in the hotel’s garden, the impressive La Salle des Trophées – an installation of 15 life-size wooden elk and deer – by Russian artist Nikolay Polissky, inhabit the first landing. Considered to be the artistic and cultural hub of the hotel, the Art District Gallery features exhibits from the world of contemporary art and a unique service of an Art Concierge. Guests can enlist consultant and cultural mediator Julie Eugéne to provide customised visits of the hotel’s private collection, keep them informed of must-see exhibitions and devise tailor-made plans.

Immerse yourself in the creative world

The Quin New York

The creative class demands more from their travel experiences and The Quin is one hotel that is truly responding to this. In an attempt to rise above the luxury travel ‘noise’, the hotel has striven to bring guests a truly immersive experience. Taking inspiration from the spirited landscape of midtown Manhattan, the Quin Arts programme is a multi-media initiative presented in an ongoing series of events, exhibitions, lectures and more. In the lobby, a 15 foot abstract video art wall displays films specifically created for the hotel, whilst the hotel’s art collection will continue to grow with original works commissioned through the artist-in-residence programme. D.K. Johnston, the curator of Quin Arts, describes the art scene of New York City as “vibrant, authentic and infectious”, a description that perfectly melds into the ethos of The Quin.

5 One of the finest collections in South Africa

Ellerman House Cape Town

As if the captivating views over the Atlantic Ocean from this Cape Edwardian mansion were not awe-inspiring enough, Ellerman House’s private art collection is widely considered to be one of the finest in South Africa. Representing over 100 years of South African culture, the collection encompasses a fascinating cross-section of genres – all serving to highlight that this country has an essential nature and flavour of its own, distinguishing it from other places. In December 2009, Ellerman House Contemporary opened, offering guests access to the work of current artists, such as Wayne Barker, Angus Taylor and Louis Maghubela – all key protagonists in the outspoken and eclectic world of modern art. Fine art is truly interwoven into this hotel’s soul – look out for the wine gallery – it is much more than a functional space and is a work of art in itself, created by a dynamic and diverse team of architects, designers, sculptors and blacksmiths.

6 A fusion of traditional and contemporary

Royal Mansour Marrakech Morocco Art imitating life or life imitating art; the distinction blurs at this illustrious, almost palatial hotel. Over 1,500 Moroccan artisans were employed to craft the monumental work of art that is the Royal Mansour, with every detail painstakingly created using authentic and traditional methods. The zelij – the geometric mosaic tiling so typical of Marrakech’s important historic sites – is exquisite, the moucharabieh cedar fretwork so detailed and sublime, whilst lacy white metal latticework create a delicate and dreamlike environment in the spa. Marquetry, stained glass and beaten bronze details are further complemented by antiques and handcrafted furniture in the rooms. And if all of this does not tantalise your aesthetic sensibilities, the hotel goes one step further and hosts regular art exhibitions by world-renowned artists; the most recent being Invisible Light – a collection of 17 calligraphy-based panels and installations that play with words and light.

THE ULTIMATE BOUTIQUE ISLAND ENCLAVE out in the open; a rare spectacle as usually, once the streak have killed their prey, they drag it into the bush to eat. However, this was such a big kill that they weren’t able to move it and were devouring their meal right in front of our eyes. It really was quite an awe-inspiring scene, and it was only when I saw the reactions of our driver and guide, that I truly realised how special and rare a viewing this was. For dinner that night, we climb back into our jeeps and set off in the dark, driving deeper into the bush. As we arrive into a clearing, we can see that the trees have been adorned with twinkling fairy lights and tables and chairs are set up around an open fire. VICKI HOLDING, RESERVATIONS MANAGER, DESCRIBES THE SENSORY OVERLOAD OF HER FIRST VISIT TO INDIA “Never before has a cliché been so apt – an assault on the senses perfectly depicts how I feel as we are driven from the airport through the streets of Mumbai. The unofficial population of the city is 25 million and it felt as though every last person of this number were on the roads at the same time; frantic, frenetic and crazy, yet so incredibly India – exactly how I imagined it would be. Amidst the hum and constant buzz of the city sits the Taj Mahal Palace, an architectural marvel overlooking the ocean and the Gateway of India, which was to be our base for our stay in Mumbai, and perfectly placed for us to embark upon our much anticipated city tour. To walk around this city is an attack on the senses in the truest possible form; a seemingly discordant cacophony of sounds, sights and smells creates a vibrant and gritty symphony that is the essence of Mumbai. A visit to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus – the landmark

train station made so famous by Slumdog Millionaire – is the epitome of colourful chaos. Such a beautiful heritage building so alive with the thrum of Indian life – the rush and hiss of trains pulling into the platforms and people jumping from moving vehicles. This intensity continues at the market. Fruits, vegetables and spices are piled high and every colour of the rainbow accounted for, the atmosphere is intense as stall-holders and customers heckle and bargain for the best prices. Next stop is Dhobi Ghat – the open-air Laundromat where immense vats of water stand alongside row upon row of concrete wash pens. A trip to Mumbai would not be complete without witnessing the washer men – known locally as ‘Dhobis’. We continue our journey north east to Pench National Park and arrive at Baghvan – a small and intimate lodge located deep in the dense

Samba deer, spotted deer, kingfishers, sloth bears and even leopards – an impressive array of wildlife… but still no sightings of the elusive tigers.

their guests. We are handed freshly muddled mojitos as members of the local tribe come to dance for us as we eat. The food – both in taste and presentation – is sublime, laid-out across traditional, ornate cattle carts. It was a wonderful evening, almost ethereal and enchanted in quality, and I really couldn’t ask for a more fitting end to my experience of India – a country that has enthralled me, challenged me and left me dreaming of a return.”

OVERWATER YOGA Take part in the morning yoga sessions – the setting is spectacular on a pavilion out over the ocean; it is a challenge to not be distracted from your practice by the incredible marine life swimming in the waters below.

MARINE ENCOUNTERS Join the marine biologist, Jack, every evening to witness the stingrays being fed and then dash to the other side of the island to see the black tip sharks being served their ‘tuna tea’.

SWEET SENSATION Indulge in the signature dessert at Deep End – ‘performed’ by the pastry chef at your table, The Opera is a symphony of chocolates, sauces, meringues, macaroons, fruit and more, all created in front of you – it is quite an experience.

Next, we embark on a four and a half hour drive to Kanha National Park. Comprising two intimate riverine camps, Banjaar Tola is perfectly placed to provide unrivalled access to the excellent game, birdlife and tiger viewing of the park, and we weren’t disappointed. Climbing into our jeep for our afternoon game drive, the air was fizzing with anticipation, heightened by our driver’s enthusiastic and rather speedy driving. It soon became clear exactly why he had chosen a route slightly more off the beaten path than usual. A streak of tigers had killed a bison and were enjoying their feast

LAID-BACK CHIC, CALIFORNIA STYLE To the far west of Mexico, at the very tip of the beautiful Baja California peninsula, lies Cabo San Lucas, epitome of unhurried chic. With the Sea of Cortez to one side and the Pacific to the other, this remote destination entices those in search of aquatic adventure and secluded relaxation. Hollywood greats such as Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz and George Clooney are regulars in this sun-blessed part of the world, where understated opulence is the order of the day.

Mexico: East vs West A COUNTRY WITH A VIBRANT SOUL AND COLOURFUL CONTRASTS; MEXICO HAS MUCH TO OFFER – WHICHEVER COAST YOU CHOOSE. Whether it is the sun-soaked eastern coastline dripping with Mayan history or the laid-back-luxe vibe of the Baja California facing the Pacific Ocean; choosing between the two could be one of life’s sweetest travel dilemmas. The beaches of Mexico are plentiful – some dazzle with porcelain white sands lapped by cerulean seas, others enthral with the promise of dolphin-spotting, whale watching and other marine adventures. THE LURE OF THE RIVIERA MAYA On the Yucatan Peninsula, the sun-bleached shores of the Riviera Maya, often best enjoyed from October to May, lure the work-weary traveller in search of a beach-based break mixed with the opportunity to explore ancient Mexican culture. The magnificent Mayan ruins at sites such as Chichen Itza and Tulum evoke a legendary past, and have helped the region to become known as ‘the Egypt of the Americas’; and whilst Chichen

When the sound of the conch shell breaks the quietude at Las Ventanas al Paraiso, guests are alerted that one of nature’s wonders – the annual migration of whales – is passing right by the resort. Welcomed with the hand-on-heart gesture of the local Jalisco Otomi Indians, you are made to feel instantly at home at One&Only Palmilla. Rich Mexican accents in architecture and décor add to the ambience, whilst in the luxuriant gardens, palm trees and tropical blooms vie for attention with fountains and water features. If you can bear to tear yourself away from the two infinity-edge swimming pools and Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, there is much to be discovered. Coral reefs galore teem with dazzling fish, hammerhead sharks, moray eels and turtles, whilst sea kayakers will find an abundance of coves, inlets and water caves. The resort is set alongside one of the few swimmable beaches in the region. This is also one of the great sea fishing destinations, aptly known as ‘the marlin capital of the world’.

A FUSION OF BEACH AND CULTURE Amongst the hotels that are ideally placed to make the most of this meld of beach life and cultural exploration are the Viceroy Riviera Maya and Grand Velas. The Viceroy Riviera Maya nestles in tropical rainforest fringed by soft white sand and is a quintessential eco-conscious hideaway where unpretentious barefoot luxury prevails. Secluded palapa-roofed villas, each with a private heated plunge pool, boast beguiling ocean views and a winding path leading to the reception area, restaurant and spa. There are endless activities to enjoy, from sailing and swimming with dolphins to jungle tours, horseback riding and bird watching, and it is well worth joining some of the excursions to landmarks and attractions such as Xcaret, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres.

You may need to decide which end of the candle to burn before you visit the swashbuckling Swiss resort of Verbier. The skiing is magnificent, the nightlife scarcely less so. With myriad bars and clubs, Verbier doesn’t do early nights! There’s an inexhaustible amount of terrain to explore – so chances are you’ll be exhausted long before the skiing, even after an early night. Crans-Montana, Verbier’s Valais neighbour across the Rhône Valley, is more sedate, with somewhat less challenging nightlife and pistes – but still plenty of both to satisfy the discerning ski cogniscenti.

Megève was the first major resort in France and remains one of the most picturesque in the Alps. Courchevel – which has itself since gathered considerable cachet – stole a fair amount of Megève’s early glory. But luckily for French Alps aficionados, there’s plenty of room for both. Whistler is one of the finest resorts in North America. Many would say the finest. Aspen might disagree! For many, Aspen remains the place to ski and be seen. But it’s not all glitz and glamour – it’s a real town with genuinely friendly locals.

The Lodge

CRANS-MONTANA

Verbier. Adrenalin-fuelled skiing and inimitable après. Crans-Montana. Possibly Switzerland’s best-kept secret. Two incredible Swiss ski resorts.

I’m being looked after hand and foot in a beautiful Swiss chalet. I can help myself to any drink I want from the bar. Even Champagne. There’s a sign up outside the kitchen saying: ‘Where the magic happens’. I glance at the visitors’ book. ‘The staff are angels’ someone has written. And here’s a more down-toearth entry: ‘I am aiming to become incredibly rich (work, lottery, bank robbery) so I can stay here all the time’. If you’re not skiing (but then what are you doing in Verbier?) you can easily just relax and unwind in the spacious, open-plan lounge, take a dip in the indoor pool or enjoy a spa treatment. ‘You are welcome to treat The Lodge like your own home’ says the small print, ‘and are welcome to help yourself to drinks you want at any time’. A light lunch is served for those guests not eating on the mountain. And there’s a 24-hour driver service within Verbier. Branson is ‘just Richard’ when he shows up. It’s said to be his ‘home from home’, and his master bedroom has a central fireplace and an open-plan bathroom. So what about the skiing? Well there can’t be many people who are not aware that Verbier has some of the finest in the world. And with something like 75 restaurants and dozens of bars, Verbier is equally proud of its après-ski. But a ‘comparatively’ early night isn’t a bad

LECRANS HOTEL & SPA

CRANS AMBASSADOR, LUXURY SPORT RESORT

Set high above the twin-towns, this exquisite property sits merely 100 metres from the slopes. With just 15 rooms and chalet-style suites, this is an intimate enclave – the ambience resembling an aristocratic private home, with antique pine-panelling and travel artefacts, each room boasting a private terrace and Jacuzzi. There’s an extensive wine cellar, but the water is special too – some of the supply comes from a fountain fed by nearby glaciers. Needless to say there’s a pool, and a spa – LeSpa Cinque Mondes where facilities include a hammam, heated pools and infinity Jacuzzi – not to mention outstanding scenery. Crans-Montana sits on a sunny shelf overlooking the Rhône Valley and the views from the balconies are truly exceptional. You can even bring your dog! A courtesy car with chauffeur is also on hand, and there’s babysitting too.

This ski-in, ski-out hotel in the Valais Alps re-opened last year following a complete refurbishment. Large picture windows offer scenic views of the mountain peaks – amongst them Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. There’s fine dining in the signature restaurant where the chef serves healthy and wholesome local fare and guests can take in the spectacular views of the surrounding Alpine summits from the floor-toceiling windows. A visit to the spa – the biggest in Crans-Montana – offers welcome pampering after a day on the slopes. A Lacroix shop offers in-house ski rental, so it couldn’t be simpler to grab a pair of state-of-the-art skis and start exploring Crans-Montana’s extensive, and historic, ski terrain. If you’re a strongish red-run skier or snowboarder, don’t miss the glacier itself, with slopes as high as 9,600 feet.

Perched high on a sun-drenched plateau and with a south facing aspect, Crans-Montana enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine each year. This, combined with a mountain resplendent with gastronomic eateries and spectacular panoramic views – courtesy of an unsurpassed 200 kilometre vista stretching from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc – means many skiers may find themselves whiling away an afternoon soaking up the sun on the restaurant terraces. The resort is also perfect for families with a delightful range of wide, open pistes, nursery areas designed for children and Snow Island – a superb family meeting place complete with snowtubing, button lifts and a magic carpet for both skiers and sledgers.

high tea? THE CHETZERON RESTAURANT This is a seriously memorable experience. Ski or walk to this old cable car station for lunch, or take the private snowcat after the lifts shut to dine and sleep high on the mountain at nearly 7,000 feet in one of the 16 rooms. The Chetzeron has a spa, an outside pool at 35° and an astonishingly varied wine list, especially considering all the bottles have to be ferried all the way up here! Breakfast at sunrise. Then head down the mountain nice and early making fresh tracks before re-joining the main pistes. WANT TO PRE-BOOK? Call the Carrier Concierge.

When traffic was re-routed through the road tunnel in 1980, it became the ski town the outside world forgot. After the Swiss army left the resort, an Egyptian millionaire, along with the Scandinavian SkiStar resort network company began to give Andermatt its dramatic facelift.

This crucially important but once untidy corner of Verbier certainly needed a facelift. Now dubbed the Place Blanche and home to one of the most striking hotels imaginable, the sleek W Verbier has “Wow” written all over it. And, as the only true ski-in five star hotel in the resort, it is also a major après-ski attraction for skiers and snowboarders as they come down the mountain at the end of a day exploring the magnificent slopes of Mont-Fort down to Tortin, Les Attelas and Les Ruinettes – to name just a few of the exhilarating slopes above the hotel.

MEGÈVE OR VAL D’ISÈRE FRANCE

scenery and some magnificent views across to Mont Blanc. There are three main ski sectors: Rochebrune, Mont d’Arbois and Jaillet. After a day on the slopes, the spa and wellness area at the Chalet offers a space dedicated entirely to calm and serenity; a sauna, hammam and indoor relaxation pool provide a tranquil environment to rest piste-weary limbs, and indulgent treatments using sumptuous brands such as Aesop and Aromatherapy Associates nurture.

Megève is not only that rarity – a French ski resort conceived long before the development of unappealing purpose-built resorts in the 1960s – but one which is exceptionally attractive. It was designed in the 1920s to be a French alternative to St Moritz and it was actually purpose-built; one of the very first in the Alps. But it has a beautifully preserved pedestrianised medieval centre, with narrow cobbled streets, horse-drawn sleighs, a delightful old church, a weekly market and an extensive selection of footpaths.

But how does Megève compare with, say, Val d’Isère? Apart from both being French, you could hardly imagine more of a contrast. Val d’Isère began its skiing journey as early as the 1930s and was hugely improved for the, now rather long-ago, 1992 Albertville Olympics. But apart from its delightful old quarter, which has been well preserved, it does rather lack Megève’s intrinsic charm. However, it more than makes up for that with truly outstanding skiing, especially for those skiers who enjoy skiing off-piste with a guide. So how to choose between these two exceptional French resorts? For creature comforts, a charming, quaint village and feel-good ambience, Megève wins. For dynamic skiing and après ski, it has to be Val d’Isère!

All that’s sophisticated about Megève is personified by the Chalet Zannier, a boutique mountain hideaway above the cobbled streets and open-air ice-rink. Chalet Zannier comprises three Alpine chalets, two of which house spacious rooms and suites, most with a balcony or terrace and fireplaces. For families there’s a duplex apartment suite with interconnecting options. A separate ski chalet is available where guests can prepare for skiing, hire equipment and from where they can be chauffeured to and from the slopes and resort centre from 7am until midnight. The ski area is vast: much of it forested with beautiful

WHISTLER OR ASPEN NORTH AMERICA These are both magnificent ski centres, but whilst Whistler and its neighbouring peak Blackcomb are dominated by pistes for stronger skiers, Aspen has an entire beginners’ mountain, Buttermilk, at its disposal. Of course this does not mean for a moment that Whistler can’t be enjoyed by beginners, but Buttermilk, and a substantial part of Snowmass – Aspen’s fourth mountain – is a more natural

playground for novices, as well as intermediates and experts. True beginners may wish to save Aspen’s most celebrated peak, Ajax, until the end of their ski break – not because there’s no easy terrain, but because at the end of the day the runs back to base are rather daunting. It’s a close-run thing, but perhaps Whistler just edges it, with the advantage of its proximity to the wonderfully scenic city of Vancouver.

Ski instructors are now using 'Coach’s Eye'. Instead of videoing with a camera, they use iPhones with this app allowing them to slow down a student’s run, put it into split screen with the instructor making the same turns, and then draw on it with markers to show what changes need to be made.

DONALD TRUMP

One of the most recognised businessmen in the world, Donald Trump hardly needs any introduction. Carrier caught up with him at the Trump International in New York, the flagship property of his Hotel Collection.

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS: I would rather not do that, my actions speak for themselves. DESCRIBE TRUMP INTERNATIONAL HOTEL & TOWER, NEW YORK, IN THREE WORDS: Extraordinary, fantastic, beautiful. AS THE FLAGSHIP PROPERTY OF THE TRUMP HOTEL COLLECTION, WHAT DOES THE HOTEL MEAN TO YOU? It is significant in setting the standard for our Hotel Collection. It was first and to equal its excellence is a challenge we have met. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ELEMENT OF THE HOTEL? It’s a magnificent, gleaming tower in an absolutely ideal location. IF YOU WERE TO HOST A DINNER PARTY AT TRUMP INTERNATIONAL HOTEL & TOWER, NEW YORK, WHO WOULD YOUR IDEAL GUESTS BE (DEAD OR ALIVE) AND WHY? I’d have my parents, my wife, my children, and my siblings.

TELL US A SECRET ABOUT TRUMP INTERNATIONAL HOTEL & TOWER. Before I renovated and rebuilt it, the structure would sway so much that people who worked there would get ‘seasick’. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP? I loved construction because I’d visit sites with my father. I liked riding the tractors and watching what was going on. So I wanted to be a builder from early on. I would build skyscrapers with my building blocks. WHERE IN THE WORLD DO YOU FEEL HAPPIEST AND WHY? I feel happiest with Melania and our son, Barron. It doesn’t matter where we are. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO ON HOLIDAY? I like to visit my golf courses and golf – I am going to Ireland and Scotland soon to visit my three courses there and when I’m at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, which is a second home to me, I can also golf at Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach.

A resort as dazzling as the Great Barrier Reef it stands on... The mix of outstanding natural beauty, unadulterated indulgence, restorative calm and the potential for adventure is simply unmatched. Set on the northernmost of the Whitsunday Islands off the coast of Queensland, the resort shimmers against the backdrop of the Coral Sea, its expansive pools inviting you to take the plunge, its exceptionally stylish accommodation bestowing breathtaking views over the island and ocean and – the real pièce de résistance, and possibly the ultimate lure of this property – the Great Barrier Reef encompassing the whole area. World Heritage wonders One of the seven wonders of the natural world, almost the entire ecosystem of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef was awarded World Heritage status in 1981. Home to the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, thousands of species of fish, dugong sea cows, turtles and rare sea horses, the Reef stretches over 3,000 kilometres along the Queensland coast, providing a spectacular playground for visitors with a love of the wild and wonderful. There is an unrivalled array of activities and reef adventures, from watching migrating whales to simply splashing in the surf. Adventure ad infinitum When it comes to adventure and exploration, One&Only Hayman Island is packed full with opportunities to really make the most of its uniquely exceptional location. The 15 minute trip to the inner reef between June and September offers the chance to spot migrating humpback whales, or dive with resort professionals in Blue Pearl Bay. Priscilla, the giant maori wrasse, resides here alongside schools of small barracuda, parrot fish and incredible coral formations. The property has a private mooring on the outer reef, offering the chance to catch glimpses of reef sharks. Fishing, too, is a favourite pastime here, with opportunities to catch everything from

mackerel and black kingfish to the occasional tuna and marlin in excess of 500 kilograms. To really get away from it all, sleek ocean cruisers are available for private charter, whilst seaplane and helicopter tours provide a whole new perspective of life on the Great Barrier Reef. The luminescent white sand of Whitehaven Beach has to be seen to be believed, matched by heart-stopping aerial views of sights such as Heart Reef (pictured), Hardy Lagoon, Bait and innumerable kaleidoscopic fringing reefs. Designer penthouse and culinary delights Away from the reef and on island, superbly appointed rooms and suites are complemented by plush villas and penthouses. The latter are located on the top floor of the Hayman Wing on the tranquil eastern side of the resort and feature individually created living spaces such as the Diane von Fürstenburg-designed penthouse with its bold prints and striking furnishings. The restaurants, too, are full of character. Fire showcases haute cuisine with a distinct Antipodean accent, whilst a king crab-to-caviar feast awaits at Pacific and Amici delights Italian tastes with wood-fired oven pizzas. Enjoy secluded gourmet picnics around the island or dining under the stars – arranged with the impeccable One&Only service.

“Even though the resort was still under construction when I visited in May this year, the exceptional beauty of One&Only Hayman Island was clear. Of the rooms that were ready to go, the Beach Villas were my favourite. With direct access onto the beach and awe-inspiring views over the ocean and the Whitsundays, you get an incredible sense of place. I cannot wait to return now that the resort is open in its full glory.” LINDSAY INGHAM, SALES CONSULTANT

The BodyHoliday, St Lucia It is an odd thing, but our spinning groups can often start to feel like a family, such is the camaraderie that exists between those of us who treasure that high-intensity burn and euphoric sense of achievement. The BodyHoliday in St Lucia – one of the most established and renowned names in the industry – understands that socialising and exercising are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they know that each can be immeasurably improved by the other. Their treetop spinning studio is an impressive sight and one entirely unique in the world of wellbeing hotels. Tucked away in thick greenery, you are immersed in a jungle landscape, the leaves of lansan and palm trees tickling the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows. Such a location means you are ever cycling towards the vast Caribbean ocean just beyond the treetops. But before you are transfixed by the view, world-class instructors bring you back to earth, leading your stationary peloton with encouraging words and expert advice to perfect your technique.

Barbados’ Platinum Coast has long been revered and renowned, yet a quiet section of the shoreline has been slowly growing in acclaim and gaining kudos. For years, the pulse of the west of Barbados has been settled around Holetown, but now the wealthy heartbeat of the island is moving north to the shabbily delightful beachfront enclave of Speightstown with its historic buildings and untouched charm. Leading the charge is Saint Peter’s Bay Luxury Resort & Residences. A short beach stroll south of Speightstown, these exquisite residences offer guests the chance to experience luxurious island living in the comfort of their own Caribbean home. With butlers, a concierge and the option of your own private chef to see to your every need, a stay at this resort is the essence of simple yet cossetted sophistication – which perfectly underpins the distinct sense of laid-back-luxe that epitomises this sublime stretch of coastline. A complimentary water taxi service means that guests are never far away from the superb range of high-end restaurants on offer along the illustrious seashore; one of the closest being the

idyllically quaint Fish Pot restaurant – where we would highly recommend the grilled fish of the day served with Bajan delights. However, should you really wish to immerse yourself in the rustic simplicity of island life, the quirkily named Moontown is not far up the road. To sample the customary weekend fish fry from one of the traditional shack-like cafés is to sample a true taste of Barbados. Some may call it an antidote to the opulence of the west coast, we think of it more as yin and yang – opposites existing in perfect harmony; to fully appreciate one you must fully value the other. It is this juxtaposition that sets Saint Peter’s Bay apart. Guests are able to enjoy a ‘best of all worlds’ situation. Whilst they relax in exquisite surroundings with every conceivable luxury close at hand, near to some of the best bars and restaurants the island has to offer, it is still possible to eat grilled barracuda out of tin foil containers or enjoy a cold Banks Beer at a simple chattel house bar watching the sun dissolve into the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea.

“We had been looking for more familyfriendly options with a beachfront location that didn’t compromise on the quality of accommodation, so we were delighted when we visited Saint Peter’s Bay. The standard of the furnishings in the suites is exceptional and, with three en suite bedrooms, they can comfortably accommodate both families and groups – parents can relax without any concerns about their children staying in separate rooms. We particularly liked the ‘bikini lifts’ which allow you to pop back to your suite from the pool or the

beach without having to cover up and pass through any public areas; children will love the large pool and there is direct access to the beach.”

BEACHES

Massachusetts

From sand spits fringed with pine forest to dune-backed shores and tranquil estuaries, Cape Cod boasts nearly 560 miles of coastline, over 40 miles of which lie within the protected Cape Cod National Seashore. The region is also home to one of North America’s Top 10 Beaches. Here are a few of our favourite beach havens.

Wooden clam shacks on stilts, white-sand dunes and swaying sea grasses give way to cranberry bogs, sun-dappled lanes and rose-covered white clapboard houses; Massachusetts’ easy going charm seduces even the most careworn traveller.

TRUE NORTH Humpbacked whales are often spotted from Race Point Beach near Provincetown. On Cape Cod’s unprotected northern tip, beachgoers also witness the power of the Atlantic as it thunders against the shoreline.

BALI

Steeped in Hindu religion, the Balinese intrinsically connect their arts with worship. The island’s beating cultural heart of Ubud is not to be missed, nor is the famous temple at Uluwatu and its evening kecak performances. A common sight to see is streets and buildings adorned with penjor – decorated bamboo poles that curl at the tips, representing the sacred mother mountain, Gunung Agung. Spanish artist Don Antonio Maria Blanco’s home, now The Blanco Museum and the Bali Museum in Denpasar are also places of interest. The Legian remains one of Bali’s most sought-after resorts and bases from which to explore. Across the road, The Club at The Legian boasts a selection of private villas, each with its own pool and the added services of a butler. There is a seductive spa where exotic Balinese therapies and rituals are a speciality; yoga classes are also popular.

Steeped in pilgrim and presidential history, Massachusetts offers an enticing blend of nature and heritage. Buffeted by Atlantic breakers, Cape Cod’s dramatic shoreline inspired tales of whale hunting immortalised in Moby Dick, whilst the serene squares of leafy Boston were once a hotbed of revolutionary intrigue. Well-heeled Nantucket Island boasts neoclassical mansions built by wealthy whale oil traders and 18th Century windmills. Martha’s Vineyard is characterised by stately beach houses, gingerbread cottages and lone lighthouses. It is Massachusetts’ relaxed charm that keeps visitors returning year after year. Cape Cod’s unspoiled coastline offers the perfect backdrop for lazy summer days – whether it is going in search of humpbacked and

pilot whales from Provincetown, following a sand swept biking trail from Falmouth’s yacht-filled harbour or enjoying fresh salty breezes kayaking on Martha’s Vineyard. In spring and autumn, cultural enthusiasts could follow one of many art trails, whilst golfers can choose between nearly 30 public courses across Cape Cod. Gastronomy plays a strong role in any stay here regardless of the season. From award-winning restaurants to laid-back seafood stores selling lobster rolls and bay scallops, Nantucket especially is a must for gourmands. In addition to regular foodie weeks and an internationally recognised wine festival, the cranberry harvest – when the bogs are flooded with fresh crimson-coloured fruit in mid-October – is an unmissable event.

IN THE MONTH OF...

Gourmands and epicureans will go where their taste buds lead; lovers of fine food know no bounds, scouring the world for fresh and innovative culinary experiences, and hotels are increasingly aligning themselves with this rise in gastronomic tourism. “I have stayed at many luxury hotels, but can honestly say that this one is special. Everything about Lazy Lizard is just jaw-dropping. The size of the estate is that of a small boutique hotel and the individual villas are perfect for hosting a family gathering or celebration.”

ARABIAN AVANT-GARDE IN AN URBAN OASIS Desert Palm, Dubai, presents a new, creative and exclusive restaurant concept next month – introducing the talents of Chef Ray Taylor as he opens a pop-up at Rare restaurant. In recent years, Dubai has undergone a culinary transformation as world-class hotels have vied to attract chefs of top international repute. One such is famed Canadian-based Taylor who, for four days from 8th October 2014, will be bringing his playful spin on modern cuisine to this sensual Per AQUUM retreat, where Arabian heritage interweaves with avant-garde flair.

JENNY BASHAM RESERVATIONS MANAGER

Guests will be able to immerse themselves in a fantasy land of flavours, as Chef Taylor presents subtle theatrical delights based on an understanding of molecular influences and adventurous taste combinations. Comprising five courses of whimsy prepared with modern expertise – it will be a uniquely organised culinary excursion designed to engage, Per AQUUM show kitchen-style, in Rare restaurant. JUMBY BAY, A ROSEWOOD RESORT //

PRIVATE ISLAND FOR THE FORTUNATE FEW This lush dot of an island, two miles off the coast of Antigua, offers a holistic approach to the concept of luxurious resort living, in the most private of settings. Jumby Bay is the alternative bolthole from the flashier hot spots in this part of the world like chichi St Barths and ultra-fashionable Mustique. Style abounds in Jumby Bay, to be sure, but it is a style that exudes sophistication and appreciation for the finer things in life – it is really not the kind of place to come looking for manicured golf courses and non-stop nightlife. Instead, here you will find ideal spots for stargazing on the powder soft white sand away from the lights of Antigua and one of the world’s best nesting sites for hawksbill turtles. Head inland to discover the roaming herd of Persian black head sheep that have inhabited the island for more than 400 years or rare birds at the wild fowl sanctuary.

The island’s coastline is only four miles all round and, in theory, all of the beaches are public, but with many accessed only via the dotted palatial homes, they feel very private. Boasting a confection of architectural styles from neo-colonial to ultra-contemporary Caribbean, villas and homes open up onto the bay without the need for high walls. For the ultimate privacy, worthy of special mention is the Lazy Lizard estate – an exclusive retreat with six deluxe pavilions, carrying a Balinese theme throughout and set around a huge swimming pool that is bigger than some hotel pools in the Caribbean. Incredibly sleek and stylish, it is one of the team’s favourite villas in the Caribbean, having stayed in June this year. Picture story:

The Maldives One perception is that the Maldives is purely about over-water or beach villas. Whilst the accommodation may appear similar, dig a little deeper and they are very different in style. Some resorts are contemporary, others more rustic; you can choose a big island resort with plenty of activity or a small, intimate atoll for a total retreat. Editor of Condé Nast Traveller, Melinda Stevens and Carrier Product Manager, Vanessa Dean share their discoveries…

Product Manager, Vanessa Dean, was joined by Sales Consultants Laura Lamb and Alexandra Murray-Harvey on an extensive trip to the atolls in June.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT MALDIVES AT LANDAA GIRAAVARU

THE SMART OPTION

“Some islands in the Maldives go for a low-key wild beach shack vibe, and others for a blow-out party luxe, but Four Seasons charts its path as a grown-up sophisticated refuge for people who want options. The island itself feels larger and grander than others; it has space, it has toys, it has range, it has incredibly helpful people who want to make sure you have the best time ever. The spa here is sincerely world-class; ayurvedic, incredibly focused and with serious slimming and post-operative programmes (which doesn’t mean you can’t just have a blooming great massage). You have the fresh, crisp glory of the Riviera-like restaurant Blu with its absurd lick of beach like a blinding white strike of lightening, and almost my favourite restaurant on all the islands, Al Barakat, built out over the water with cushions and hookah pipes and outrageous baba ganoush. But it’s also a very family affair. Tennis courts get booked by keen repeat guests a year in advance; endless cuddly dolphins and chocolate chip cookies appear at opportune times and the proper marine centre is full of little fishes for pointing at and starfish for stroking. Don’t miss out on the boat! Just to see the string of islands in this remote atoll is to see the Maldives as it should be seen; the riot of blue water, the diving, the dolphins, the wind in your hair and a jolly good cocktail in your hand.” Melinda Stevens, Editor, Condé Nast Traveller

JUMEIRAH VITTAVELI

FOR FAMILIES A short 20 minute boat ride away, this is an ideal option for families who do not want to travel too far away from Malé. Amongst the most spacious rooms in the archipelago, the villas feature some of the largest private swimming pools I saw during my time in the Maldives, whilst the beach suites offer a rare second storey for larger groups. A hub of activity, the Kuda Koli Kids Club and Teen Lounge here are fantastic, and children are spoilt for thrills with innovative and thought out activities around the resort. Honey facials and coconut massages – using ingredients hand-harvested by local communities – are just some of the junior treatments to calm active children at the Talise Spa. TAKE A DIVE AND EXPLORE Underwater discovery takes priority here with two centres devoted to diving and exploring the sea. Snorkelling in the Maldives is wonderful throughout the islands but nowhere matches the convenience I found at Baros. A spectacular house reef is just a few strokes from the beach so should you feel like snorkelling at 6am, you can swim out straight from the beach – no need to wait for a boat to take you out to a reef. Baros is where we spotted our first turtle; we also watched baby sharks swim into the lagoon. Out on the water with Shuga from the Marine team, we witnessed a school of dolphins glide through the ocean in the distance. WHAT’S NEW? This summer, the overwater Lime Restaurant was extended and now includes a brand new infinity swimming pool that curves out over the lagoon.

SHANGRI-LA’S VILLINGILI RESORT AND SPA

GLIMPSE MALDIVIAN LIFE, PAST AND PRESENT… Unlike some Maldivian island retreats where luxurious seclusion comes at the price of cultural isolation, here we were able to get a charming insight into the region’s heritage. We were taken out by boat to a local island to explore the village mosques, coral stone houses, fish markets and local schools by bicycle. Discovering the uninhabited ‘Port T’, an old British naval base from the second world war, was unexpected and fascinating. At the most southerly point of the Maldives, it is definitely worth the extra flight to get to the atoll. INSIDER TIP… A truly unique experience, don’t miss the chance to have a private seafood banquet arranged for you on the golf course surrounded by torches – the only one of its kind in the Maldives, it is an intimate and beautiful setting.
