Welcome to the AMRA WA Model Railway Exhibition The Western Australia Branch of the Australian Model Railway Association hopes you enjoy our 2016 Exhibition. There are layouts of different sizes and scales. Layouts modelling different continents and countries, and layouts showing many different modelling styles.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, meaning there is something here to amaze and entertain everyone. We are supported by retailers from across Australia and their stores are certain to have something to tempt you. Preservation Societies are also well represented with members keeping our rail history alive. Yarloop Workshop groups makes a poignant return to this years Model Railway Exhibition following the destruction of the workshops in January of this year. Tom’s Layout

The intention with these small operating/working N-Scale dioramas is to motorise different dioramas to simulate the real world, but also to keep it as small as possible. The display consists of four individual dioramas with sizes of less than 50cm x 50cm each. The farm diorama has moving tractors, trucks and harvesters. In the park next to the farm a person is cycling around, another one skateboarding and two people riding a seesaw. 

The construction site dioramas moving/working construction vehicles and a crane as well as a construction worker lifter.



The city centre diorama has two way streets between the buildings with moving vehicles and motorcycles



The underground train station diorama has a moving and stopping train, people cleaning windows, sweeping floors, going up and down from underground train station with an escalator and one watering the plants in the garden above the train station. It also has a two way street with moving cars and motorcycles and an excavator doing some digging on ground level.

Paintings of Trains

Trains have been a passion for Fred Rance since he was a small boy in the 1950s when he received a Hornby Clockwork Train Set for Christmas. He then followed a career in the railways, starting work at the East Perth locomotive depot on 7 December 1964, retiring 42 years later. His career has included driving electric suburban railcars, steam diesel and electric railcars. He also worked as a guard, signalman and salaried officer. He has now translated this lifetime of work and love for trains into paintings. 11

Thomas and Friends- The Early Years

The series Thomas the Tank Engine first appeared on British TV screens October 1984. Consisting of Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James and Percy, the series was a great success and went on to become very popular with many more characters. These original characters will be appearing on the layout with some later characters also appearing. You will see more characters from the series such as Bertie the bus, George the steam roller, Bulgy in his original guise as a double decker bus, who tried to steal the railway passengers and became unstuck. Information panels invite viewers to find certain objects, such as Postman Pat and Jess, his black and white cat but you have to look closely for him. Panels also explain what many items do such as telegraph poles, railway signals and a windmill. Each engine /train will pass by around three times in order to give the viewer time to identify them and read their information panel if you would like to see any particular engine you see on an information panel please let us know and we will send around that engine /train as soon as possible. 14

Castledare Miniature Railway

Take a ride in a steam train along the banks of Perth’s Swan River at Castledare Miniature Railway. Public train rides operate on the first Sunday of each month from Niana Station, Castledare Place, Wilson and on the third Sunday of each month from Wilson Park Station, 10

Kent Street Wilson (Kent Street Weir). Entry to the grounds is free at both locations with use of the facilities at Niana Station free and Kent Street as per council charges. Access to the trains is by the car parks, walkway and stations. All other access is restricted on running days. Remember enclosed footwear must be worn while riding all trains. 15

My train layout is set on a sunny Autumn day by an old railway on an South Western Australia hillside in the late 1970's. The 00 gauge railway tracks are shiny and well maintained which is essential for proper train operation. In the railway system there are 5 trains namely "Oliver Cromwell" circa 1974, "Little Connie", "GWR", "LNER" and "1658". The trains zoom through the country side like the powerful trains they are, with their wheels whirring over the tracks. A small group of hikers looking for gold in the hills while the gold rush is happening arrived by train. Can you find a little blonde girl wearing a red and white polka dot dress? She is happy and in no hurry to be found. 12

My interest in railways all started when my Godfather Chris gave me the Hornby Original Simple Loop Track Set with 2 single coal carriages and a passenger car. Now you can see before you a bustling shunting and coal yard with trains. I have extended my track and nailed it to MDF board. Using a saw and grinder on the different sized blocks, I carved the hills from Styrofoam and lay the green grass over it. To make the trees, I twisted wire branches for trees in to shape and glued clump foliage to stick on to the branches. From Dad's driveway, I collected rocks to use as coal to be transported by the train GWR. Using a water dropper I glued on the ballast between the sleepers. I placed the sheep contained in fences made from match sticks on the hills because they will get a good view from there. 17

Nightline Drive In

Watch some old school cartoons while checking out this display which takes a trip back to popular drive in theatres. This N scale model is a combination of three drive in theatres across Australia. Modelled on the Dale Line theatre in Armadale in the 1980s, it also takes elements from the Galaxy Drive In in Kingsley and the Blacktown Drive in in New South Wales. Recreations of elements from the 1970s and 1980s have been added to this display, including a selection of old school cartoons. Howitzdun

This N scale layout began life in 2005 as a way to show how a layout was built as three separate modules that could be joined together as one layout that replaces an existing bookshelf. I found that I didn’t look at books too much but a layout had more interest where I could actually play trains in a restricted space which 14

The Perth Electric Tramway

For the first half of the twentieth century, people travelled around Australian cities by electric tram or trolley-bus. What was it like? Find out at The Perth Electric Tramway at Whiteman Park. The Perth Electric Tramway are the operators of the only genuine Electric Tramway in Western Australia, with 32 trams in their collection. The trams we operate are Melbourne W class trams, Fremantle No. 29 and Perth E class No. 66. We operate in Whiteman Park four days a week, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays and all days during the school holidays 20

The Albany Model Railway Association Inc

The scenes depicted in the Albany Model Railway Association Inc HO scale modular layout are mostly based on farming country in Australia. Some specific details typically from South Australia are included but are generic enough to represent many rural areas. Standard modules are 1200mm X 600 mm with the top of baseboard height of 1140 mm and a back scene height of 245 mm. The main storage /fiddle yard and the corner modules are owned by the club but all other modules are owned by members. We are a club based in Perth with an interest in 1/14th scale remote control model trucks trailers and the buildings, construction machinery and other associated equipment to go with them. Plus an avid interest in anything RC. Postal address: 27 Tollington Park Road, Kelmscott WA 6111 22 Pixieville - a whimsical model by Carol, Amy and Kelvin Davis (in 24 square feet) Pixieville is an enchanted place where imaginative folk can see fairies and wee folk enjoying the benefits of train travel. Pixieville makes use of gnarled bush timber and driftwood to create an entangled fairy habitat. Some affluent folk dwell in miniature mansions around the square or along the waterways. Others remain true to their natural heritage and dwell in nut houses or treetop apartments overlooking waterfalls or the forest floor. Beneath the log twinkling fairy lights warm the darkness with a hue of colours and tinkling water flows in the decorative pond. This N scale layout uses flexible Peco track and covers under 24 square feet. Locomotives run on 12 volt DC. Signals are triggered by sensors mounted between the rails that operate relays. An optic fibre lamp and submersible pump provide other features on layout. For transportation, Pixieville breaks into a number of segments. 16

Siegfried Line – a layout in 24 spare feet by Kelvin Davis

A HO scale railway model set in Germany in autumn of 1944 after the early light snow falls of that year. The layout is set around a hypothetical extension of the branchline that ran from Saarbrucken to Von der Heydt/Burbach AV. The extension is from the actual railway at Von der Heydt to the actual railway at Walpeshofen. This extension, if built, would have serviced the portion of the Siegfried Line that ran through the hills in this area. It would also have provided an alternative route to Dilsburg and inner Germany from the coal mines at Von der Heydt and the railway maintenance workshop at Burbach AV. The layout depicts a siding could have been built to service the Siegfried Line. There is significant military activity due to the build up to the Battle of the Bulge and the Allies having advanced close to the French border across the Saar River at Saarbrucken. The appropriate military hardware has been painted in the livery the Germany army adopted for the battle of the bulge and the soldiers (over 100 in number) in the relevant uniform of that period of the war. 23

WA Miniatures

24 The Harts Landing and Rockford Railroad (HL&RRR) – US Model Railroad Club of WA. The HL&R connects the small rural community of Rockford with the bustling river port of Harts Landing, and the traffic on the line can get quite busy. Built in 1.8 metre x 0.6 metre sections the expandable nine metre long layout, which features Digital Command Control and finescale track, serves as a branch line on the US Model Railroad Club's 140 square metre club layout. Look for realistic scenes and prototypical running speeds. For more information about the club chat to one of our friendly members.

Rickmansworth - In N Gauge

This recreation shows the Rickmansworth main line station of London in the 1950 -1950 period of British Rail. Created to not only highlight the intricacies of the railline, it also captures everyday details to make the station look as real as possible. Some of the rolling stock is new but most is second hand. Buildings were new Metcalf Card Kits and the scenery was constructed from a range of materials either new or used. Numerous items were built from scratch. It is built on an 1800mm by 900mm board and is an N gauge Graham Farish representation. 26

Gee Cee Railway

This big home layout has no theme as such but offers up to three operators a wide range of realistic working situations. The layout consists of 66.8 meters (219 feet) of track and 51 points the three controls allow the two main lines to be operating while trains are

being marshalled in the yard. The 24 locomotives and 139 wagons have 96 liveries and provide consists of mixed or seven road-name configuration. There are 20 different models of locomotive and 20 manufacturers over all the rolling stock. The scenery represented is very mixed with elements of typically Australian from the 30s and 70s and present: 

The oil depot is from Meekatharra in the 30s (Vacuum Oil is now Mobil).



Maylands, Bassendean, Subiaco stations and Leighton Yardmasters office as they were in the 70s.



The length runners shed is typical of the 50s. Wokalup siding goods shed is on the Bokal platform.



Mt Lawley and Warwick are modeled on the current stations.



The quarry, grain silo, chemical factory, industrial units, dairy siding, locomotive shed with store, goods shed, farm house and stock yard are generic.



All scenery is scratch built except the overpass at Bassendean.

Started in 1974, hibernated in 1984, restarted in 2012. After the 28 years in hibernation this layout has now become a work in progress of repair and expansion. 25

NDMES – 31 years of continual development

The mix of model engineering and the operation of a miniature railway has catapulted the Northern Districts Model Engineering Society to No. 1 in WA in terms of paid-up membership. From small beginnings 31 year ago, the society now has 68 members, with a surge in membership in recent years. The society caters for those who want to build their own locomotives and steam traction engines from the ground up and members who just love playing trains. 19

The growth of the society in recent years has been reflected in the increasing number of visitors to its monthly public runs at Vasto Place in Balcatta, with the attendance at the April public run the biggest yet. Now work has started on another phase of its operation – a garden railway, catering for gauge 1 locos and rolling stock. The society’s involvement with AMRA started in the late 1980s and for the first few years the society operated its portable track outside the exhibition building, before moving inside. 28

Haskell Models

Haskell Models produce models of Australian and Taiwan outline trains in several scales and gauges as well as a range of backdrops for Australian outline layouts. Haskell Models first attended the Perth Model Railway Exhibition last year where the HO scale L class diesel model ,which was the first volume production model of the WAGR/Westrail engine released by any company, was shown for the first time. A budget Westrail wagon will be available at this show. Some of the other offerings include 0n30 Victorian Puffing Billy range, Queensland outline HO/Hon3.5 models in conjunction with Wuiske models, backdrops, Taiwan HO models and 0 scale brass. Haskell Models is one of the very few companies to attend the exhibition that travels to it from outside of WA. 29

Train World Pty Ltd - an abridged short history.

The business of Train World goes back over 40 years ago. I was walking from the Gardenvale railway station with Peter Nielsen one day, when the idea came up to start a train shop in East Brighton. Why we had this idea is lost in the mists of time. But it seemed a very good idea. From small beginnings a business was started. Peter had to move away so eventually I was the sole owner. The small shop became overcrowded. There had to be a bigger shop. It just so happened that there was a big hardware shop in the strip. When it came up for lease I jumped at the chance to have a bigger shop. And it was bigger. Much bigger. Over the years we filled the shop, moved through to the rear and occupied the whole block with a train shop.

A bigger shop was required. I was in an antique shop when the lady who ran the business told me she was closing. When I ascertained the rental paid. But it was a big shop. A good sized shop that would be ideal for a train shop. My wife thought it a great site as did the rest of the family.

A fresh start in a new location. And they meant it. The job of planning, fitting it out and moving the stock took over four months and need help from staff, family and friends. We have been in the new premises just over four years and it just seems yesterday that we moved shops. 31

Wawasee Steel

Wawasee Steel represents a small iron works and steel rolling mill possibly situated in the mid-west of the USA. It is built in HO (1-87scale, 35mm=1foot) and highlights the coke ovens, blast furnace and rolling mill operations in steel making. The continuous track around the perimeter represents the main line rail network which brings raw materials (iron ore, coal, limestone, and scrap metal) to the works and removes finished rolled steel sections. The layout was created by Raoul Chevalier and Peter Cameron. The pair wish to thank those Sierra Pacific Modelers whose efforts have made this display possible.

6A Chester Midland Engine Shed

Can you spot all the trainspotters or the dog attacking the postman? What about the two boys fighting or the one about the run over? See if you can spot all the elements in this display which recreates the 6A Chester Midland Engine Shed from Chester General Station in England. The display is inspired by Barry Bryant’s childhood in the 1960s where he spent many summer Saturdays at Chester General Station visiting the 6A – Chester Midland Engine Shed. The buildings are reasonably accurate scratch built representations of those buildings, with some modellers license used for the track and end area. Steam and diesel trains run on the layout representing those which ran in the 1960s. The layout has been designed for up to four operators and the N Gauge Society – Western Australian Area Group members will be assisting in operating the layout during the exhibition. Large Scale Model Trains – Garden G Scale

Some of the largest model trains will be running at the Australian Model Railways Association’s large scale display. It will feature models in various scales, ranging from 1:15 to 1:32, operated on both 32mm and 45mm gauge track.

The display will feature freight and passenger trains from the UK, the USA and Australia, hauled by electrically powered modern diesel locomotives and real steam powered models. To see your favourite locomotive running, check the timetable at the display for anticipated operating times. 44

Trans Australian Trains

The country town of Rourkelup, the coastal location of Port Hughes and Gray’s Gas Exploration camp site are named after three of the founding members of the Arid Australia group as a tribute to them and in recognition of their more than 20 years of modelling the railway that lines the west and east costs of Australia. Though smaller than is usual for the group, this year’s layout again showcases the many and varied inter and intra state trains that have run on the standard gauge line from Kalgoorlie to Perth since its completion 50 years ago. 25

If you watch long enough, you may see intra state wheat and iron ore trains as well as interstate container and general freight trains and not forgetting the famous Indian Pacific 23 passenger train and the long white snake that is the SCT freight train. Any 1:87 scale rail fans that are lurking trackside with their camera may also be lucky enough to see the odd vintage steam or diesel locomotive pass by at the head of a tourist passenger train or heritage freight train. 45

Bricktober

Home of Western Town and Monster Land. The two displays, created by West Coast LUG members, recreate two iconic themes with Lego. Monster Land is a classic land of all things dead, undead and scary including a Haunted House and Dracula’s Castle. The Ghost Train runs on L gauge rails and Its engine borrows the running gear from The Constitution engine.

The Western Town started life as a homage to the Lone Ranger film but quickly morphed into a reference to many Western films and TV shows. The train and consist is called The Constitution and runs on a L gauge track using the Lego power functions system. 47

Sandalwood light railway On30 / O16.5 By Scott Parker

This layout is a fictious English location of a freelance light narrow gauge railway using diesel/petrol and steam locomotives using small mining skips to move minerals, log wagons to move cut down timber and small goods wagons for general supplies moved about the railway. 47

Freightlink—The Marklin Group

KLEINHOF is a small N-gauge layout. Its complexity is not in its track network but in the schedules assigned to its trains. The single loop of track plus a branch line accommodate three passenger and one freight train, all running under computer control. railway twice, stopping at the working boom gates. A lot to see in 5 square feet of space. MICRO-Z is only 1½ sq. ft. in size and fits in a drawer. It has a station, a bridge, goods shed and freight yard. Its two trains run under fullyoperational overhead catenary wires. FREIGHTLINK has everything. Working signals, overhead catenary wires and computer-controlled shunting. A railbus brings the workers to work. Six trains take containers to the harbour, and bring coal to the power station while beer wagons are shunted to their owners. Little Faller cars chase each other around the roadway. 48

Tammin

The Tammin Wheat Silos have been recreated in this layout using 3D programs and a 3D printer. Tammin is located 184km east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway on the way to Merredin. This town is one of the major stops for grain to be shipped. CBH locos can be seen loading grain for the trip to Perth. The main line to Perth for the eastern states trains can be seen in the front of the layout. Thanks to CBH for the information to do this layout. See if 27

51 Maddington HO Layout by the Fremantle & Districts Model Railway Association The HO scale layout with German style buildings was originally created by a retired train enthusiast in a home garage in Maddington. The Fremantle and Districts Model Railway Association acquired the layout in 2015 and have since spent time making it suitable for displaying at AMRA, to show off a manually controlled layout. From the central control panel, operators have two controllers, point motor buttons and indicators for running the layout. The layouts design means it is possible to run several short trains or one long train on each main line and park other trains in sidings. The layout is now for sale. The Valentine Run

Model railroading is fun! We want to share our enjoyment of the hobby with you. Most likely we’re running in show mode (three separate loops and a branch line) but if we get bored, we’ll chase each other’s trains in a three loop spiral. Our layout represents the railroad between Valentine (Arizona) and Needles (California) on the transcontinental line from Chicago to Los Angeles. Our group’s interests vary from US (running on Saturday and Monday) to Australian (running on Sunday) trains, steam to diesel eras, pristine to weathered models - each will be on display. Yarloop Workshops

On 7 January 2016 a devastating bushfire over ran and destroyed the Town of Yarloop. Located in the Town was the Yarloop Workshops, a heritage precinct, which was ravaged by the fire. Despite the loss of their precinct the Yarloop Workshops group is in the process of recovering and appears at this years exhibition as part of their recovery process. AMRA is supporting Yarloop Workshops by providing them with the proceeds of the funds raised from use of the U Drives and Railway Puzzles. Your enjoyment will help . Please view the display.
