DATE August 2012 -- ISSUE No 359
Taupo Model Railway Club Hobby Exhibition. For those who want a weekend away this is one of the ones you should not miss. The exhibition is run by the Taupo Model Railway Club each year in a venue we would like to be able to afford here in Auckland. We loaded the trailer on Friday morning and as usual not everything that should have gone on board went on board. The three of us, Geoff, Bob and Ian, proceeded down state highway one to Huntley to pick up Graham and then on to Tirau for our morning tea. After that the next stop was Taupo. Our usual program on arrival is to inform Brent that the JAFA’S have arrived again! The pool is the first item of interest to be dealt with followed by the display stand. Once we had the pool filling up and the model arranged it was time to sit down for a bit of a break. At about this time it dawned on Ian that a couple of small but somewhat important items were missing, things like a water hose, a water pump and the cash float. Just little things ,understand? The cash was not really a problem, a visit to the local supermarket and that was sorted, but the pump took a bit longer. We hummed and harred and finally Monty and Bob went of to the local Fire Brigade surely they had pumps? Ah … No … not one that small. They came around and had a chat and a look thru the show and suggested the local Boat Shop could be a goer. So we decide to do just that. Well eventually Monty and Bob went of again for a look see. They got there only just in time. The guy was washing down his boat after coming back from a fishing trip on the lake and in half an hour would have locked up and gone who knows where. So we had a pump and hose and a battery. Incidentally Monty took $20 and brought some morning tea for the Fire Brigade and the Marine shop the next day as a thank you for their help. The show is open on Saturday and Sunday in the Events Centre. Start time on Saturday was 10am and off we all went to hurry up and wait for the customers to trickle in. Most of the time things run ok but the boats and their controller get a right hammering and break downs occur, which have to be repaired/ fixed re rigged etc., we did manage to get thru the weekend eventually. There is ample parking and a café run by the ladies of the Taupo Cosmopolitan Marches sells a great variety of food and drinks to exhibitors and public a like. This year we were represented by Monty Jones, Bob Kempster, Graham Annabell, Geoff Chowles, Ian Donald and Ian Verrall who had a table next to the pool with his lovely steam boats. Accommodation was provided by Monty. Again, dinner on Friday night was by the Taupo Cosmopolitan Marches, Saturday was Fish and Chips and Sunday was Chinese. The weather was to good!! When it rains they all head inside , when it is fine they are out side or up the mountain the weather was fine all weekend. 2-3 degree frost in the mornings and sunny days. Geoff and graham went home on Sunday Night as Geoff has to run a business. Bob and Ian wandered home on Monday. The radio warned of ice in the forests but the roads were all clean and dry. We had a good trip back. Unloaded the trailer at the clubrooms and Bob then took it back to Geoff.

CLUB NIGHT Wednesday the 11TH of July 2012 Meeting chaired by President Bob Kempster MEMBERS PRESENT. 21 APPOLIGIES. Brian Senn, Brian King, Dennis Lake VISITORS. There were no visitors NEW MEMBERS Stephen Warner from Whakatane joined SMM when we were at the Taupo Model Railway Show. NOTICES and ANNOUNCEMENTS. The Static Competition has been moved from August to November. The Visit to Waihi has been set for the first Sunday in October. Members who have working 29 frequency radios and would like to get rid of them please contact the Secretary. The club is on the lookout for these to replace the ones on the public boats. GENERAL BUSSINESS. Bob Kempster reported on the Taupo Model Railway Show. (full report on page 1) SAILING COMMITTEE The August Sail day is on the 15th and is Mercantile Steering and Tug Towing. GUEST SPEAKER No Guest Speaker this month FROM THE BOAT TABLE. Bob Kempster ran the table this month. Brian King was recovering from an operation on his back. Geoff Chowles is right into ships and things in bottles. The latest is four wood screws through a piece of wood in a small bottle. Marine Modeller International has a plan of a submarine called Unseen. This is a fairly basic model that requires a bit of dexterity to get all the necessary electrical bits inside. Model is free diving and runs on one prop. Malcolm Thomas has a new speed boat. It is Pacific Queen from Robbie. This one was seriously quick the first time in the water. So quick that Malcolm has changed the motor in order to slow the boat down as it was a bit to fast for the confines of our pool. Monty Jones has refurbished a model built by a mate some thirty years ago. It is the Titan, a small tug for the mates six year old grandson. The first motor was probly to small as it has burnt out already. Bob Kempster is building a Stewart 34. The plans are scaled down from the full size ones, and also blown up from a magazine. The hull is plank on frame. The scale is 1,1/8th inch to the foot. Meeting closed at 8.45pm.

Whilst helping to sort Nobby’s bits and pieces I came across a pile of back issues of the Mailship. Among the many items was this article from the November 97 issue.
“TEAM WORK” This is the story about Four people named EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY,ANYBODY and NOBODY. There was an important job to be done and EVERYBODY was sure That SOMEBODY would do it. ANYBODY could have done it, But NOBODY did it. SOMEBODY got Angry about that, because it was EVERYBODY’S job. EVERYBODY thought ANYBODY could do it, but NOBODY Realized that EVERYBODY wouldn't do it. It ended up that EVERYBODY Blamed SOMEBODY when NOBODY did What ANYBODY could have done!! Cheers (I think)
