August in Florida …. Are You Prepared ? Tips to Beat the Florida Heat 1.

Stay Hydrated — It may seem so simple, yet few of us actually do it. Make it a point to drink plenty of water and sports drinks that replenish the electrolytes lost in sweating. Keep a re-fillable water bottle with you wherever you go. Staying hydrated helps you feel more energetic. Drink until your urine is clear. (Due to the salt content in most sport drinks some folks prefer to mix 1/2 water and 1/2 sport drink). Eating fruits and vegetables high in water content is another alternative to help you stay hydrated.

2.

Time Your Outdoor Activities — Limit your physical activities to appropriate times of day. If you want to go for a leisurely stroll with your dog, work in the garden, or get an invigorating bike ride in, don’t do it during the heat of the day. Pre-dawn hours allow you to finish your exercise regimen by greeting a beautiful sunrise. If you know an area is well lit, trying riding your bike or running in the evening. Always use safety lights and reflective clothing when exercising outdoors in the early mornings or evenings.

3.

Always Wear Sunscreen — It’s a good idea to wear Sunscreen year round in Florida. It will help protect you from the rays that damage your skin as well as the ones that could cause skin cancer.

4.

Wear the Right Clothing — Choose light colors, breathable fabrics, flowing skirts and loose fits whenever possible. When exercising try to wear dry fit materials specifically manufactured to keep you cool. Also remember, hats help protect your head from sunburn and sunglasses help protect your eyes.

5.

Get Creative — Look for ways to beat the heat. If your running or biking and see a neighbor washing their car, ask them to spray you with the hose as you go by. If you are outside but not moving keep hand free fans or water spritzers close. Take umbrellas for instant shade. Seek out trees to shield out the sun or breezy areas for ventilation. There are also products you can leave in your freezer then tie to various parts of your body (neck, back, wrist and head) to keep cool. Nothing beats the occasional ice cream cone or dip in a pool to keep cool.

VISION 6. Eat Lightly — Avoid heavy meals. Enjoy cool summer salads, fruits and vegetables. To be respected as the We live in Florida, Take advantage of it! most responsive The sun is intense. But, with proper planning, you don’t have to wither. Don’t hide away in your AC, get out and responsible and enjoy our state! IN THE SPOTLIGHT… Shelli Farnsworth ~ Customer Service ~ Representative Where were you born & raised and went to school? I was born in Racine, Wisconsin on Lake Michigan. This is also where I grew up and lived until I got married. What was special about where you were from? Racine is set right on Lake Michigan in the southeast corner of the state below Milwaukee. We had the beauty of the water that made us feel like we lived ocean side. Tell us about your family, people (including pets!) in your life… I was the youngest of five kids so I grew up thinking I was a princess because my family spoiled me, not to mention it was one of the nicknames my father gave me. I got married young, at the age of 19 to my fabulous husband and partner in crime, Ron. We just celebrated 31 truly great years July 20th. We have three wonderful boys that still live in the great city by the great lake, Racine. Miles, who turned 30 on July 28th, and is an underground pipeline engineer, Tyler turned 27 on July 1st and is an IT Technician, and Josh, my youngest, will be 26 on September 9th. He is a line supervisor for Cree Lighting. Our lives are also entertained by three dogs that drive us a little crazy but we can’t live without - two yellow labs, Hogan and Lexi, and a Lhasa Apso, Riley. Hobbies? Favorite Activities? I like to do and/or try anything because if you don’t try it how do know if you don’t like it? I’m a huge football fan and love the game. The Green Bay Packers are my favorite team. Sometimes I think my blood runs green and gold. Who has been the most influential person in your life and why? My Grandma Mackey has been the most influential person in my life. She was the rock of our family and talented beyond belief. She was always there to help anyone in need and taught me at a very young age to do unto others as you want them to do unto you. She lived 98 years and was influential not only in my life but anyone that knew her. By the way, my mom is a clone of her also. I always said if I could be half the lady that my grandma or mom are, I’d consider my life a success. What’s the best advice you ever received? I’ve gotten such great advice from my grandma and my parents along the way that it’s hard to pick out the best. I just hope my actions in my life demonstrate that. What is the career & training path that led you to the District? My husband took a promotion through his job so that is what brings us to blazing hot Florida. I didn’t work the first seven months here and really missed the interactions with people. So I started looking for a job and here I am and loving it! Can you tell us about your day-to-day responsibilities? We do many things here in Customer Service, too many to list. I’d have to say my favorite is the interactions with the residents when they visit the office. We laugh, we cry and try to make their day. Usually it’s just the little things that put a smile on their face. What is your favorite aspect of working for the District? Working with the residents and helping them get the answers they are looking for. What is the most interesting thing you have ever seen? Living in another country. We were married on Saturday, opened our gifts on Sunday and we flew to Greece on Monday, where my husband was stationed with the Army. We got to see and learn their culture as well as learn the differences so we could get by day to day.

My favorites… Movie: Purple Hearts, I always love a happy ending … Television Show: Big Bang Theory ... Sports Team: The Green Bay Packers … Vacation Spot: Anywhere family is … Restaurant…Corner House in Racine, Wisconsin … Food: Pizza and Beer, oh wait beer is not considered food, oops sorry. Cant’ have one without the other. … Dessert… Funnel cake with strawberries, mmm mmmm

Shamarco Forbes ~ Finance ~ Senior Accountant Where were you born & raised and went to school? I was born in Miami Beach. I lived and attended school in Miami until I was 18. I moved to Washington, D.C. to attend Howard University and I lived in the D.C. Metropolitan area for 15 years. I loved D.C. with a passion but hated the cold weather so I decided to return back to Florida in 2006. What was special about where you were from? Miami is a place of fun, sun and incredible beaches. While growing up, it was routine to visit the beach daily and to have weekend beach cookouts. Miami also has a very diverse culture with the Latin and Caribbean communities. Tell us about your family, people (including pets!) in your life… I am the second oldest of 4. I met my wife after moving to Inverness 3 years ago. We have been married for a year and have a two month old son. Hobbies? Favorite Activities? I love to travel. Some of the places that I have visited are Barcelona, Spain, Calgary, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, London, Trinidad and Tobago. I also frequent the Bahamas as often as I can. Who has been the most influential person in your life and why? My wife. Her endless support and motivation that keeps me going to achieve the best for our family. We have been married for exactly a year and each day she continually amazes me. What’s the best advice you ever received? Always strive for success. What is the career & training path that led you to the Districs? As I mentioned above I attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. Afterward I worked in non-profit organizations for 15 years and governmental entities for over 5 + years. The latest was the Village of Wellington. Can you tell us about your day-to-day responsibilities? My day to day responsibilities consist of wire transfers, reviewing purchase orders, journal entries and various duties involving The Village Center. What is your favorite aspect of working for the District? The uniqueness, there is nothing like it. I have an hour drive to work but once I enter The Villages I get excited about coming to work, driving alongside pristine landscape and decked out golf carts - it is an awesome way to start your day! What is the most interesting thing you have ever seen? The birth of my son. An experience and feeling that will always be with me.

My favorites: Movie: The Godfather… Television Show: The Big Bang Theory… Sports Team: The Miami Dolphins, The Miami Heat and The Miami Hurricanes … Vacation Spot: The Bahamas, with over 700 islands and cays to choose from... Restaurant: Columbia in Ibor City … Food: Caribbean Food … Dessert: Cheesecake 2

GOLF CART SAFETY In a community of 110,000 residents, golf cart safety is important both on the multimodal paths and on the roadways. To encourage golf cart safety, we have educational materials available to help inform both residents and guests about safety. Golf cart safety brochures are available in the Customer Service Center located at 984 Old Mill Run. You can also view a video addressing many of the concerns related to golf cart safety in The Villages by visiting www.DistrictGov.org.

It’s a “Ruff” Job...VPSD Has It Covered!

Benefits Open Enrollment Meetings

VPSD crews were recently called out to rescue a dog in distress. On Thursday, June 30th, at approximately 10:00 pm, “A” shift crews consisting of Battalion Chief Mike DiStefano, Lieutenant Jarrod Falck, Firefighter/EMT William Whitaker, Firefighter/PM Edward Bock, Firefighter/EMT Chris Roberts, Lieutenant Jeff Loder, Firefighter/ EMT Bobby Ramage, Firefighter/EMT Mason Guyette, Firefighter/ PM Danny McGoldrick and Firefighter/EMT Dudley Brearly, Jr. responded to a call that a dog had fallen down into a storm drainage pipe. When the crews arrived they were confronted with “Rusty”, the barking dog, looking up at them from approximately 7 feet down the pipe. They realized the first course of action was to supply oxygen to Rusty. They ran an oxygen line down to close proximity of Rusty’s face and also used a fan provided by the resident to circulate air movement.

Rusty was not wearing a collar so attaching any type of tool to pull him up was not an option. And, time started to become a factor, as Rusty’s barking diminished with time. VPSD crews also feared Rusty would slide further down the drainage pipe. VPSD crews then, with the permission of the resident, began the attack of breeching into the concrete slab and tunneling down to an approximate depth of Rusty. VPSD crews then cut the drainage pipe to extricate Rusty who by that time had slid further into the pipe. Within an hour of receiving the call Rusty was free of his circumstance. He was provided oxygen via an animal oxygen mask, given water and rinsed off. The resident was also encouraged to contact a veterinarian to be further evaluated. Rusty, the canine, can be thankful for the VPSD, that all lives do matter. - Deputy Chief J. Day Right - Lt. Jeff Loder sawing through the drainage pipe to rescue Rusty.

Cool Dog Treats — Fill ice cube trays with peanut butter( without xylitol, which is toxic to pets), water and half a mashed banana. Freeze them overnight for your own “Pupsicles”. Cool Cat Treats — Mix wet cat food with water and freeze to create a lickable treat that will hydrate your cat for hours.

Splash and Play! - If boating, kayaking or other water fun is in your plans, make sure your pet wears a flotation device. If you own a pool, be sure to teach your pet to find the shallow end of the pool or the stairs so they can exit safely in the event they may fall in.

DEPARTMENTS IN THE NEWS! The Savannah Center Special thanks from a co-worker for the extra effort extended by Recreation Facility Specialist Dave Gleim. “On July 15, we had a wedding reception for a very special couple who had overcome many hardships recently. The Couple’s modest reception did not include hired music. One of the guests asked if music could be piped into the room so the couple could have a first dance. The radio at the time was broken, but Dave pulled out a stack of CD’s and listened to a few tracks from several until he found an appropriate song. Then Dave worked away at setting up a CD player in the room and projecting the sound. The couple danced their first dance on their wedding day to “When I Fall In Love”! The guests applauded and everyone was so happy the reception was capped off in such a memorable way.

Thanks to the Fire Department A resident sent a letter of thanks for the fire department’s professionalism and quick response to a lightning strike on July 18, close to his house in The Villages of Summerhill. The lightning struck a neighbor’s tree about 20 feet from his house, and there was a strong smell of gas. “Although there was no apparent damage to our home, a fire fighter asked if we wanted him to check our house, which he did by using a gas detector and an infrared detector. He found nothing amiss. We appreciated their efforts.”

The Villages Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, In Service Training Program sent Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Day and Fire Marshal Dan Hickey a letter stating, “The two of you gave such an informative and entertaining presentation to our group, it almost seemed as though you had rehearsed your performance! ...It was a surprise to learn of your numerous and widespread responsibilities. We owe you and your department a significant amount of appreciation and respect.” I plan to have more of your department come and educate more members of the community.” Great Weather + Great Morning = a S P L A S H I N G success!!

Gate Attendant Lawrence Hladun was working the Sunset Point Gate on July 2nd when he saw a golf cart driving on Buena Vista Blvd. The man driving the cart was lost and asking for directions. As Larry spoke with the man he could tell he was more than just lost, he was highly confused. Larry called dispatch and requested SCSO and Fire/EMS to his gate. Larry stayed with the man until EMS was on the scene and transported him to the hospital. Then kept the golf cart keys to give to the man’s wife after SCSO called her. If not for Larry’s actions, this incident could have led to a bad outcome.

Fire Chief Cain commended Lt. Chris Gruber, PM/FF Jason McInturf, PM/FF Max Cantor, and EMT/FF Tyler Whitaker of VPSD Station 40, after receiving a letter of high praise in their regard. “On June 17th a friend told me I would be well taken care of at Station 40, so I went in to get help removing a ring from my finger. I suffer from swelling and discomfort from lymphedema after lymph node removal and radiation treatments for breast cancer. You should be very proud of your men for their professionalism and ingenuity in being able to remove my ring after about 45 minutes. Many folks would think this is something minor, it isn’t when you have something like lymphedema and could actually strangulate the finger and lose it because of lack of circulation. Please thank them again. Be Safe, and thanks for being there for all of us!”

Recreation Goes for CAPRA ReRe-Accreditation ! The Recreation Department previously received its Accreditation from the National Recreation and Parks Association in 2011. The NRPA reports that out of the 3,000 departments that are members only 104 are accredited, our department being one of them! The District, has been the only community development district recreation department in the United States to earn the Commission’s accreditation. In Florida, only 21 municipal or county recreation departments have earned the designation. The accreditation process requires an organization to meet various standards and host a team sent by NRPA to review process, procedures and our documentation to assure the standards are met. With our 5 year accreditation up for review, the re-accreditation process was no different. After spending several days with District staff, and staying in The Villages, the Accreditation Team was impressed with both our hometown and our staff during their visit. “Our department is proud to be associated with these elite recreation departments in the state and nation. It’s such an important recognition, because it ties into the high standards that the residents expect...This project was a testament that shows we all can and will accomplish anything we put our minds to and work as a team. ..It was a moving experience to watch it come together for the betterment of each other and our community,” said John Rohan, Director of Recreation. We feel confident from the Team’s comments and our ability to meet compliance requirements, that our accreditation will be renewed.

The Accreditation team with Recreation Staff - Chairperson Linda Smith, CPRP from North Carolina; Leslie Clark, CPRP Mesa Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities in Arizona and Debbie Harvey, CPRP Logan City Parks and Recreation in Utah during their June visit for the reaccreditation process.
