INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE This Asbestos Awareness training program is the core of a two-hour course for those who may work around, and may even contact, asbestos materials, but are neither required nor expected to disturb them. The two-hour course also provides a foundation for additional training of individuals whose job does require them to disturb asbestos materials. The narrated program on this DVD consists of three parts: Part One - Introduction and health effects Part Two - Types, uses and locations of asbestos materials Part Three - Recognizing and avoiding damage to asbestos materials

The thing that makes this training program effective is your experience as a professional in the health and safety field. As a training provider or instructor, you bring these resources to the presentation of this Asbestos Awareness program. The examples in this program will bring to mind similar situations from your own experience, and you should not hesitate to enhance the program by discussing them. A previous version of this program used rattlesnakes and bears as an analogy to asbestos hazards, a theme that continues in this program. Showing the program takes about an hour, allowing for time to answer questions. What do you do for the remaining hour of the course? Here are some suggestions:

106 Capitola Drive Durham, NC 27713 (P) 919-544-6663 (F) 919-544-5800 Trainingnetwork.com

• Allow time to take care of the housekeeping duties that are a necessary part of any training course. This includes registration of attendees and any related administrative details. Also, you should anticipate and answer the following questions that invariably are asked: What time will we finish? I parked in ______. Is that OK? Where are the restrooms? Will we have a test? [Optional -- exam questions are provided] - Will I get a certificate?

-

• If you are providing attendance certificates (which I recommend), tell the class that everybody will get one. Remind them that PRINTING their name clearly on the registration form or sign-in sheet will ensure that it is spelled correctly on their attendance certificate. • Ask people to introduce themselves by giving their names, telling what they do and where they work. This puts the class at ease, and it helps to tell them who you are as well. • Conduct a field trip of locations in your facilities where asbestoscontaining materials are present, showing the class actual examples of what you showed them in the slides. If you do this, take precautions that no one touches unprotected friable materials or inadvertently damages the protective covering on any material. Be careful not to disrupt any facility operations, and make sure that safety rules are followed. Do not enter any ceiling plenums or spaces where someone could be exposed to detectable levels of airborne fibers. • Conduct a virtual field trip by taking pictures of asbestos-containing materials in your facilities and showing the audience where these materials are in their workplace. Make sure you don’t show damaged or deteriorated materials unless you have immediate plans to remove or repair them. 106 Capitola Drive Durham, NC 27713 (P) 919-544-6663 (F) 919-544-5800 Trainingnetwork.com

• Examinations are not required for awareness training, but if you are using this program as part of a course for accreditation or licensing (including refreshers), you might be giving an exam. A set of questions is provided from which you can copy the ones that apply to your course. I hope that you enjoy using this program and that your audience finds it worthwhile.
