ThinkNurse.com Edition 55

All of my life I have heard the expression “if I could live my life over knowing what I know now, things would be different.” In the past several years I have had the opportunity to be “mama” to three of my granddaughters and enroll them in first grade. My husband and I have helped with homework; assisted one of them on science fair projects, and contributed during school functions and activities. They have had a full agenda of after school activities including religion classes, dance classes; and this year we have added Pee Wee Cheerleading to the mix. What I have learned is that what you know only assists in your perspective and helps to calm you when things get rough. I have also found that I am more patient with them because I remember that children generally are okay if they know that you love them. Another opportunity I have received at this stage in life, has been serving as ARNA President for a second term. This in itself would not be considered a great achievement because most presidents serve for two consecutive terms, however, my Presidencies have been separated by 12 years. During my first presidency, workplace advocacy was the big issue of the day. Arkansas was in the middle of the discussions that lead to the workplace advocacy program established by the American Nurses Association. The big issue now is the establishment of the South Central Multi-State Division or MSD. Delegations from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma have been meeting to hammer out the guiding principles and business plan to meet the needs of each state as well as the MSD. Joanne DeJanovich, MSN, past

ARNA CEO agreed to stay on as part of the Arkansas delegation to the MSD. Her experience in association management has been an asset as we continue to develop the business plan for the MSD. The MSD will be discussed during an open forum during this year’s Membership Assembly. This is my last President’s Pen. When the convention and Membership Assembly is over you will have a new President and Secretary. The directorships of regions 1, 3, and 5 are open for re-election. Sue McLarry, PhD, RN, Nominating Committee Chair is working hard to present a full ballot to you, the electorate and is working to determine if elections can be executed electronically this year. Highlights of this presidency have been the Centennial Celebration of ARNA; and attending the historic ANA House of Delegates in 2012 where the structure of ANA was changed. However, the best thing about being President was working with you and for you. I found that this time around I was much more deliberate in my thinking and discussed issues with the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for a diversity of opinions and made sure that all aspects of issues were discussed before any decisions were made. This works well for the association as new leaders are developed and the best decisions are made. This past year there was not a CEO at the helm of ARNA. I want you to know that the Board of Directors worked diligently on all issues brought before it and came prepared for every board meeting with leadership manuals in hand. I would like to thank each of you for trusting me a second time to serve you.

ARKANSAS AR RKANS NURSES ASSOCIATION 100th ARNA CONVENTION INVITATION FROM THE ARNA PRESIDENT It is my privilege to invite all nurses to the 2013 Arkansas Nurses Association’s Convention and Membership Assembly meeting. The convention is ARNA’s major educational event that brings nurses together from across the state in a spirit of collegiality and scholarship. Nurses in various roles and practice settings made a commitment to their professional colleagues by submitting abstracts for presentations and posters. They will share their special expertise in discussing new and innovative practice roles, examining current nursing research studies, and providing clinical topics to meet the learning needs of participants, from the new practitioner to the seasoned veteran. We thank them for their willingness to advance the nursing profession as an evidencebased, caring profession. The convention also includes several special events which should not be missed. The ARNA Awards Luncheon will be held Thursday. This event honors nursing and individual nurses who have made significant contributions to ARNA and the nursing profession. We have a special treat for convention attendees on Thursday evening. We will be entertained by the Northwest Arkansas popular Ultra Suede Band. The Convention also includes the first Membership Assembly meeting to discuss issues and events that impact nursing and ARNA. There is an Open Forum tentatively set for Friday. Plan to visit the Joan Toddy Exhibit Hall where representatives from various companies and agencies display products that enhance nursing practice. Please support these friends of nursing as they help us become aware of new technologies and resources to improve and facilitate nursing practice. The ARNA Board of Directors looks forward to sharing and celebrating this special 100th Annual Convention with all of you. Jujuan English. Kay, RN Living into your best self comes down to a choice. It’s about knowing who you are and then putting it out there confidently. Often, I see health care professionals have very little insight into their own needs. However, taking the time to be self-aware has proven to bring more fulfillment and success for people both personally and professional. Did you know that 83% of high performers score high in self-awareness? What’s the correlation? Possibly the art of human connection that is often overlooked in the business of health care. Nancy will give you tools to improve your personal self-knowledge which will greatly enhance your team, patient outcome and your own fulfillment. CANDIDATES FOR ARNA’s ELECTION PRESIDENT Rhonda Finnie, DNP, AGACNPBC, APRN During the past decade since graduating nursing school, ARNA membership has provided personal and professional opportunities for my leadership and growth. One particular area has been the participation as a delegate to the American Nurses Association’s/Membership Assembly. The national discussion in those meetings during the past two years has been the relevance and responsiveness of our organizations in the current context of tremendous changes in our healthcare systems. We must ensure that our association is visible in our advocacy efforts for members and the nursing profession at large in order to benefit the patients and families we serve. We have committed members who have worked and are working tirelessly on this goal. As ARNA moves forward, we must have leaders who recognize the important mission before us, and who have the vision to lead when necessary, to collaborate when necessary, and to oppose when necessary. It is because I believe in the mission of ARNA that I have placed a decade of work before you and ask that you consider this as you cast your vote for the ARNA president SECRETARY Michelle Smith, MSN, APRN/CS, BC It has been my privilege to be on the team of professional volunteer leaders and staff members of ARNA during this year of transition. A year that has been both challenging and rewarding as we pursue the vision for the future of the organization. The nurse leaders are focused and committed to building programs that benefit a broad range of students and nurses. My goal for the upcoming 20

term is to serve as the Secretary and support efforts on Chapter formation and service to members as we progress down the path of implementing the new model. I appreciate your support for the opportunity to serve in this capacity as we work together for nursing. REGIONAL DIRECTOR REGION 1 NORTHWEST Kimberly Joy. L. Carney, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, CDE I have been a practicing clinician for the last 25 years with experience in the private, state, and federal sectors. My interest in serving ARNA, as Region 1 Director, stems from an on-going commitment to nursing and the provision of quality health care. Furthermore, I am interested in not only representing and supporting the nurses’ opinions of Region 1, but also in moving forward the legislative agenda specific to health care in Arkansas. In this ever-changing health care environment, it is essential for Arkansas nurses to keep abreast of newer knowledge, advances in technology, and current health care issues, including health policies impacting nursing practice. It is for these reasons that I am interested in the Region 1 Directorship of ARNA, and look forward to the opportunity to serve the Arkansas nursing profession Holly VanWinkle, MSN, RN-BC I am committed to the success of the nursing profession and to the health of our communities in Northwest Arkansas and across the nation. The future of nursing depends on collaborative relationships fostering excellence in nursing practice and education. As District I Regional Representative for the Arkansas Nurses Association, I plan to

EƵƌƐŝŶŐdžƉŽͻ^ĂƚƵƌĚĂLJ͕ĞĐĞŵďĞƌϳƚŚͲ^ĞĞĚĞƚĂŝůƐƉŐ͘ϱ

promote membership and advocate for academic and professional development opportunities desired by nurses through collaborativerelationships within our region and state. I currently serve as the program coordinator for the RN-BSN Online Program at the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. I am a current member of the Sigma Theta Tau International and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association of Northwest Arkansas. Your consideration is kindly appreciated. REGION 3 SOUTHWEST Barbara Landrum, PhD, RN, CNE I have been a member of the American Nurses Association since 1977 and an active member in multiple state associations, including Kansas, Minnesota, North Carolina, Montana, and South Dakota than relocating to Arkansas in 2006. Over my career, I have served in numerous capacities from district officer (treasurer, vice-president, president), state practice committees, delegates to ANA House of Delegates, and service on the ANA Practice Council. I feel my broad range of experiences with ANA/SNAs, administrative skills from my work as a hospital Chief Operations Officer and as a Nursing Department Chair, combined with my service on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Finance Committee have prepared me for the ARNA Regional Director position. I believe this is an important time in ARNA’s existence. If we are to be a viable, vibrant organization, we have to find ways to be meaningful to a diverse range of nurses. If elected, I will work to make ARNA a transparent and Arkansas Nursing News

inclusive organization which is truly representative of the nurses in this state. CENTRAL REGION 5 Sharon Stevenson, DNP, APRN, PNP-BC As Regional Director, I would work diligently to fulfill the functions and responsibilities of this role. Since the chapter for Pulaski County is established, I would foster a relationship with the coordinator(s) to maintain adherence to established guidelines, policies and procedures. My goal would also be to support the initiatives of the chapter, ARNA and the nursing community. As a member of the Health Policy Committee, the Regional Director position would bring an interesting, useful and insightful perspective to the role. If given the opportunity I will serve to the best of my ability. Please consider me as a candidate. Cheryl Schmidt, PhD, RN,CNE, ANEF, FAAN I am seeking the position of Region 5 Director on the Arkansas Nurses Association (ARNA) Board of Directors. I was honored to be appointed to the position last year as ARNA reorganized to match the new American Nurses Association (ANA) structure created by the 2012 ANA House of Delegates. I would now like to serve a full term to help ARNA continue to thrive under the new structure. I have been a member of ANA since 1970, and have served at local, state and national levels since that time. I would be honored to continue serving in this important leadership role. Thank you.

NOMINATION COMMITTEE Cathleen Hamel, MS, RN, NEABC, CNOR I Cathy Hamel am interested in fulfilling the nominating committee position to assist the ARNA officers in succession planning. I have previously served on committees for STTI, AONE and NYSNA. I am an active member of both ARNA and the ANA and believe I can fulfill the duties required for this role. Hillary G. Creech, RN, BSN I have been an ARNA member since shortly after my graduation in 2009, and I am a better nurse because of it. My fellow ARNA members have always been welcoming and enthusiastic. They have encouraged me and all other nurses to stay involved in issues important to the nursing profession, to advocate for

I have lived in AR for over 20 years, and have been a staff nurse, nurse educator, and I now have the privilege of serving our nations’ Veterans as a nurse researcher.
