WELCOME

DEAR FRIENDS, Are you ready for inspiration, fellowship, connections, education and celebration? I am! Welcome to the 101st Annual Kiwanis International Convention. Welcome to the 100th Anniversary celebration of Kiwanis in Canada! Each year, Kiwanians from around the world get together to celebrate our successes and discuss ways to make this organization stronger. This year will be no different. We have intentionally created spaces, workshops, general sessions and celebrations that will help you connect with others to share ideas on service, philanthropy and club strengthening. I hope those connections will inspire you to return home and make your club even better. A stronger Kiwanis will make a bigger difference in every community, where kids need Kiwanis. In addition, I hope you will enjoy the energy and spirit the members of Circle K International will add to our convention. Their convention is running concurrently with ours. Aktion Club is holding their Training and Leadership Conference (TLC) right here in Toronto too! I have invited them to all of our events. Why don’t you plan time in your schedule to join them? We are all partners in service, and I hope you will make an effort to connect with them to strengthen the ties that bond our organizations. Thank you for your service to the Kiwanis family. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your president this year. But most importantly, thank you for serving the children of the world. #KidsNeedKiwanis In Kiwanis service,

Sue Petrisin 2015–16 president Kiwanis International

WELCOME TO TORONTO It has been more than 30 years since Toronto served as the host to the Kiwanis International convention in 1985. As you can imagine, much has changed! Welcome back to our beautiful city as we celebrate 100 years of Kiwanis in Canada. We are excited to have you join us to enjoy the sights, sounds, tastes and hospitality of Canada’s largest city. You will soon discover that you have landed in one of the most diverse and multi-cultural cities anywhere. We invite you to tour the world while you are here. Explore our ethnic and cultural neighbourhoods. While you are downtown, enjoy the many restaurants, theatres and concerts. You may choose to go further afield to visit the pandas at the Toronto Zoo, located in the eastern part of the city, or Niagara Falls, a short 75-minute drive to the west of the city. On your return don’t forget to have your photo taken in front of the new TORONTO sign at our iconic City Hall! There is so much to see and do when you are here. Let’s take some time to get to know each other, to learn from each other and to build Kiwanis together! Enjoy our convention—EH! EDUCATION SESSIONS

FORMAT

This year’s convention is full of special topics and positional education opportunities. And the schedule takes into account the feedback received from last year’s event. Lessons learned include: • You want to leave the convention with tools to help you be successful. For those in or about to be in a leadership position, that includes positional education. Thursday afternoon is dedicated to this. • You LOVED the Saturday format of members sharing their awesome projects and club activities, so we added an additional hour. Here’s an overview of the education format to help you plan your experience:

THURSDAY

SATURDAY

Morning - Half-hour talks to give you tools you and your fellow club members can use right away in five different areas that relate to the I-Plan, Kiwanis’ strategic plan:

An idea exchange where members will hear real success stories about service, fundraising, membership and branding. These six-minute talks will be brief, yet beneficial.

1. Inspiration-The Formula: Membership and engagement

A town hall discussion on inclusiveness picks up the conversation started in 2015. Join the discussion to learn and share about how inclusiveness opens the door wide for more enlightenment, more members and more service to children.

2. Impact: Meaningful service 3. Image: Our Kiwanis image 4. Investment: Financial viability 5. Service Leadership Programs Afternoon - Think about your current or upcoming leadership responsibilities, and choose the positional training course or meeting that would best prepare you.

First timers! Special session just for you on Wednesday at 3 p.m. or Thursday at 9 a.m.!

17

Don’t keep your love to yourself. Happiness is contagious. When you share the good things your club is doing for children in your local area, you’ll be amazed at the response you get. Visit The Formula Carnival booth in the World Showcase and share what you’re doing to win prizes.

PROGRAMS

President-designate’s remarks Jane M. Erickson

Is your club ready to go global? K Corps is Kiwanis International’s new exchange program for Kiwanis teens (15-18). Through the twoweek program, participants learn about their host country, live with volunteer host club families, and participate in club-designed service projects.

For Kiwanis-family teens, it’s a chance to do what Kiwanis members do best—in host communities half a world away. Check this program booklet for the K Corps workshop time and location, and find out if your club is ready to go global!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER WELCOME

CHRIS HADFIELD “Good morning, Earth!” That is how Colonel Chris Hadfield, writing on Twitter, woke up the world every day while living for five months aboard the International Space Station as its first Canadian commander. Through his 21 years as an astronaut, three spaceflights and 2,600 orbits of Earth, Colonel Hadfield has become a worldwide sensation, harnessing the power of social media to make outer space accessible to millions, and infusing a sense of wonder into our collective consciousness not felt since humanity first walked on the Moon. Called “the most famous astronaut since Neil Armstrong,” Colonel Hadfield continues to bring the marvels of science and space travel to everyone he encounters. Colonel Hadfield will address Kiwanians and guests during the convention’s Opening Session. He will receive the Humanitarian Award, which is presented by the Kiwanis International president to honor high-profile people making a difference in their community. 63

ENTERTAINERS WELCOME

JEWEL Jewel is an acclaimed singer, songwriter, actress, poet, painter and philanthropist. The four-time Grammy nominee, hailed by the New York Times as a “songwriter bursting with talents,” has enjoyed career longevity rare among her generation of artists. Already a legendary performer in the music industry, Jewel has been writing poetry and short stories since she was young. Now this talented artist opens the pages of her most intimate journals to give audiences a glimpse of her magical, turbulent life. Jewel will perform a private concert after the gala dinner on Saturday, June 25.

64

WELCOME TALLI OSBORNE Though Talli was born missing her arms and bones in her legs, she was raised with the belief that she could do anything she wanted, and this determined attitude is exactly how she lives her life. Though Talli’s interests are in helping and motivating others, one of her other loves is music. She’s recognizable in many punk scenes around the world, and for the past four years, she’s fronted her own melodic-punk band, performing in many landmark venues in Toronto. Talli feels that being an inspirational speaker was something she was born to do. She loves changing perceptions and attitudes and sharing her stories with others. As Talli says, she wants to spread inspiration, love and punk rock, across the globe, one talk at a time.

Talli will address Kiwanians and guests during the Fellowship Breakfast on Friday.

CHOIR!CHOIR!CHOIR! Choir!Choir!Choir! is an international singing phenomenon that exemplifies the best of creativity, collaboration and community-building. Founders Nobu Adilman and Daveed Goldman talk about these themes—and then make audiences feel them. Packed with humorous interplay, Choir!Choir!Choir! is a showstopper for the collaborative process: teamwork at its most harmonious.
Warm up your voices for the Closing Session! 65
