QB Kurt Warner passed for 361 yards and three TDs while compiling a perfect passer rating of 158.3. All three scoring passes went to WR Anquan Boldin who finished with six catches for 140 yards and his first career triple-TD day. Fellow WR Larry Fitzgerald caught six passes for 153 yards as the duo eclipsed the century mark in th nd the same game for the 6 time. Boldin’s 22 career 100-yard game tied him with Jackie Smith for the most in franchise history. In their home opener last Sunday, the Redskins improved to 1-1 with 29-24 come-from-behind win over the Saints. QB Jason Campbell threw for 321 yards and led Washington to a pair of touchdowns in the final 6:30, including a 67-yard TD pass to Santana Moss. The victory was the team’s first under head coach Jim Zorn. After Sunday’s game, the Cardinals will stay in the DC area to prepare for their week four contest at the New York Jets.

THE LAST TIME Redskins 21, CARDINALS 19 October 21, 2007 – Fed Ex Field – (85,640)

STATISTICS

The Cardinals dug themselves an early hole at DC but battled back in thrilling fashion. They scored 13 fourth quarter points to pull within two but were unsuccessful on both a 2-point try with 0:21 left that would have tied it and a 55-yard FG in the closing seconds that would have won it. Instead the team fell to 3-4 and out of first place. QB Kurt Warner turned in a gutsy performance for the Cards. Starting a week after tearing a ligament in his left elbow, he played the entire game with a heavily braced arm and was instrumental in leading Arizona’s comeback. He also showed tremendous resiliency in battling back from a pair of INTs that led to nd Washington’s 2 first-half TDs. On the Cards 2 drive, FS Sean Taylor returned a Warner INT 48 yards to nd the AZ25 setting up a 2-yard Clinton Portis run. Midway through the 2 quarter, MLB London Fletcher st th picked Warner off at the AZ27 and returned it for a TD. Late in the 1 half, the Cards went for it on 4 -n-2 at the WASH48 but came up short, turning it over on downs. The Arizona D then came up with one of its many huge plays on the next snap. DE Bertrand Berry sniffed out a screen and batted Jason Campbell’s pass into the arms of LB Calvin Pace who returned his first career INT 14 yards to the WASH23 with 1:46 to play. The Cards ultimately faced a 4th-n-goal at the 2 with 0:06 left when Warner hit WR Anquan Boldin for a TD that made it 14-6 after the PAT was blocked. The Redskins opened the second half scoring, moving 59 yards in 11 plays and took a 21-6 lead on Portis’ 1-yard TD run. Arizona then narrowed it to 21-13 early in the 4th thanks to a 10-yard Warner-toBoldin connection. The 12-play, 72-yard drive was aided by a pair of Redskin personal fouls (S LaRon Landry & Fletcher). Arizona’s next drive reached the WASH5 thanks to completions of 22 and 43 yards to TE Leonard Pope and WR Larry Fitzgerald, respectively. However, DE Andre Carter’s sack of Warner th forced a fumble that DE Phillip Daniels recovered at the WASH13 to kill the drive midway thru the 4 . Arizona’s D kept the comeback hoped alive by forcing 3-n-outs on the next two Washington drives and overall did not allow a first down in the entire 4th quarter. With 2:37 left, the Cards took over at their own 29. A 22-yard pass to WR Jerheme Urban was followed 2 plays later by a 29-yard catch-n-run to the WASH2 by RB J.J. Arrington. After 2 runs failed to reach the end zone, back-up QB Tim Rattay was inserted for a 3rd-n-goal play from the 1 with 0:26 left. On a play action pass, he found Pope for a TD. On the tying 2-point try, Boldin took a direct snap in shot-gun and tried a pass to Fitzgerald that was short. The Cards had life when Urban recovered the on-side kick at the AZ41 with 0:20 left and one timeout. Consecutive catches of 15 and 7 yards by WR Bryant Johnson set-up a game-winning FG try but Neil Rackers’ 55-yarder with 0:02 left was just wide.

LAST WEEK’S GAME Game 2 CARDINALS 31, Dolphins 10 September 14, 2008 – University of Phoenix Stadium (63,445)

STATISTICS

In their home opener, the Cardinals offense rolled up 445 total yards and 31 points on the Dolphins en route to a 21-point victory and their first 2-0 start since 1991. QB Kurt Warner passed for 361 yards and 3 TDs. All 3 went to WR Anquan Boldin who finished with 6 catches for 140 yards and his first career 3-TD day. Fellow WR Larry Fitzgerald and the duo eclipsed the century mark in the same game for the 6th time. was 6-153 nd Boldin’s 22 career 100-yard game tied him with Jackie Smith for the most in franchise history. Warner finished with a perfect passer rating of 158.3, becoming the first Cardinal QB with a perfect rating since Jim Hart on 11/23/75 vs. NYJ. It was Warner’s third career “perfect game” tying him with Peyton Manning for most in NFL history. Warner’s first pass of the day set the tone for a big day. After a delay penalty and another for illegal formation, the Cards’ 1 st down play saw Warner throw it deep down the middle for Boldin, who continued on for a career-long 79-yard score. On Arizona’s next drive, the QB connected with Fitzgerald on a 75-yard pass to the 4 and 3 plays later, Warner hit Boldin with a 3-yard TD toss. While Miami’s first 4 drives ended with punts, Arizona’s produced points as Neil Rackers put the Cards up 17-0 with a 45-yard FG midway thru the 2nd quarter. On the opening series of the 2nd half, Arizona was aided by 3 Miami penalties that kept the drive alive and rookie Tim Hightower capped it with a 1-yard TD run that put AZ up 24-0. Hightower became the first player in team history with TD runs in each of his first two games. The Dolphins got on the board with a 32-yard Dan Carpenter FG but the Cards answered right back. They moved 80 yards in 8 plays as Warner and Boldin connected again, this time on an 8-yard hook-up. Only a Ronnie Brown 1-yard run with 2:38 left made the final 31-10. Both squads pulled their starting QBs as Chad Henne replaced Chad Pennington with 9:42 to play and Matt Leinart came in for Warner for the final series. Edgerrin James reached a career milestone on the opening drive of the 3 rd quarter when he became just the 14th player in NFL history to eclipse 15,000 total yards from scrimmage.

WARNER WINS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CARDS HEADED ON A ROAD TRIP

Kurt Warner has been named this week’s “NFC Offensive Player of the Week” for his performance in last Sunday’s 31-10 victory vs. the Miami Dolphins.

The Cardinals will pack a little more gear than they normally would for a road trip this week as they head east for back-to-back games against the Washington Redskins and New York Jets in what is being combined into one 10-day road trip.

Warner finished the game having completed 19-of-24 passes for 361 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He finished the game with a perfect 158.3 passer rating, the third time he has accomplished that feat during his NFL career and the first time since 2000. This is the seventh time in his career Warner has earned Player of the Week honors and his third selection as a member of the Cardinals. He won the award in 2006 at the first game at University of Phoenix Stadium vs. San Francisco while also winning the award in 2005 in his return trip to play the St. Louis Rams. Warner becomes the first Cardinals offensive player to win the award three times since quarterback Neil Lomax was honored four times between 1984-1988. The Cardinals will fly to Washington on Friday. Following their game on Sunday, the team will continue on in Tyson’s Corner, VA for the week of practice leading up to the game against the Jets. The Cardinals will hold practices at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., which counts Cardinals President Michael Bidwill as an alum, having earned his law degree there in 1990. This week’s game against the Redskins will be the first of five games against East Coast teams in 2008, as the Cards play the Jets next week, Carolina (10/26), Philadelphia (11/27) and New England (12/21). The Cardinals made frequent back-to-back East Coast trips during their time in the NFC East (1970-2001) when they faced Washington, Philadelphia and Dallas twice a year. However, the trip this week will mark the first time the Cardinals have been on the road for an entire week of preparation for a game. The Cardinals will head back east three more times this season to face the Panthers, Eagles and Patriots.

WHISENHUNT CONTINUES SUCCESS

FOUR IN A ROW AGAINST THE AFC

In their second season under head coach Ken Whisenhunt, the Cardinals defeated the Miami Dolphins 31-10 in week two, giving them a 2-0 to start the season, the best start for the team since 1991 when the team also started 2-0. Since 1978, 232 teams have started the season 2-0 and 153 of those teams made the playoffs (66%).

The Cardinals played the first of four AFC East opponents last week when they faced the Dolphins and the team expanded on the success it had last year against the AFC, defeating Miami 31-10 at University of Phoenix Stadium. The team is now 3-0 at home against the AFC under Ken Whisenhunt.

The Cardinals are riding a four-game winning streak dating back to last season, the team’s longest since 1999. th

He finished his first season (1966) with a record of 8-5-1and after dropping the opening game of the 1967 season, won the next three games. With Whisenhunt at the helm, the Cardinals will be looking for their first 3-0 start to a season since the team started 7-0 in 1974 under head coach Don Coryell, the winningest coach in franchise history.

The Cardinals finished 3-1 against the AFC North last season, including a 2-0 record at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns. They won on the road in Cincinnati, their first AFC road win since 11/7/04 at Miami when the Cards beat the Dolphins 24-23, ending a 17-game road losing streak. THE STAFF REMAINS THE SAME PENDERGAST LEADS TOP 10 DEFENSE Defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast returned for his fifth season as the defensive signal caller for the Cardinals. Pendergast, one of two coaches (Rick Courtright, assistant defensive backs) retained by head coach Ken Whisenhunt when he took over in 2007, came into the season looking to return his defense its status as one of the best in the league and it has been through the first two games of the season. In the Cardinals 31-10 victory last week, the defense held the Dolphins to just 92 yards and five touchdowns in the first half. For the game, Miami had 236 yards of total offense, with 89 of those yards coming on a fourth quarter drive with the game already determined. Overall, the Cardinals defense is now ranked seventh overall th in the NFL. They are the 10 rated defense against the rush th and the 12 rated defense against the pass. Through the first two games, the defense has allowed just two touchdowns. The 23 combined points the defense has given up represent the lowest total in the first two games of a season for the Cardinals since giving up 20 points in 1977 (7 and 13). Between the second half of the week one victory in San Francisco and the first half of last week’s win, the Cardinals gave up just 176 yards of total offense, 10 first downs and six total points, while the Cardinals offense scored 30 points. th

The Cardinals will be tested this week against the 11 rated offense in the NFL as they face the Redskins. Last season, RB Clinton Portis ran for two touchdowns against the Cardinals as Washington emerged with a 21-19 victory.

Cardinals vs. Redskins

A key component for the Cardinals success in 2008 is continuity. With all 16 coaches returning to their jobs with the team, it marks the first time since 2001-2002 that the Cardinals have had the same coaching staff for two consecutive seasons. Whisenhunt feels like the trust built between the coaches and players and the understanding that grows between them pays dividends on the field. “It’s easy to think of coaches in schemes and in plays, and there is no question that helps,” Whisenhunt said. “But the underestimated part of it is the relationship you build with these players. When you have been through the battles (together), you don’t have a new guy to get up to speed and that helps with the overall team chemistry.”

THE STREAK CONTINUES

PERFECT AGAIN—8 YEARS LATER

With the 31 points the Cardinals scored against Miami last week, the team has now scored 20+ points in 10 consecutive games, extending the longest active streak in the NFL. In that span, the Cardinals have scored 30+ points in a game six times.

At the age of 37, Kurt Warner had his third career game with a perfect passer rating of 158.3 last week against the Dolphins, completing 19-of-24 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns. It was the first time he has posted a perfect rating since 10/1/00 vs. San Diego (24-of-30, 390 yards, 4 TD) and he is the first Cardinals quarterback to post a perfect rating since Jim Hart on 11/23/75 in New York against the Jets.

New England’s streak ended in week one when they defeated the Chiefs 17-10 and Jacksonville’s streak ended in week one as well after they lost to the Titans 17-10. Arizona, New England and Jacksonville were the only three teams to score at least 20 points in each of the final eight games of the 2007 season.

Warner’s three career perfect games tie Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning for the NFL record (min. 20 attempts). Below is a list of Warner’s career perfect games:

It is the longest streak for the Cardinals since 1983-84 when the team scored 20+ points in a club record 11 consecutive games. The 1983 Cardinals scored 34 and 31 points in the final two games and then scored over 20 points in the first nine games of the 1984 season.

WARNER’S YARDS PER ATTEMPT STAT PUTS HIM IN RARIFIED AIR Another eye-popping statistic from Kurt Warner’s impressive outing last Sunday was a yards per attempt average of 15.04 on his 24 passes (19 completions). It was the highest single-game yards per attempt average of Warner’s career and his fourth over 14.0 (minimum 20 attempts). th

According to the Stats, Inc. it was only the 10 time in NFL history a QB averaged more than 15 yards per pass attempt (minimum 20 attempts). Warner’s effort was the only one of the 10 in which the quarterback completed better than 75% of his passes. Below is a list of the top 25 single-game performances in that category showing that Warner has three games in the top 13, with two of those games coming with a perfect passer rating. HALEY CALLING THE SHOTS

2008 ROAD WARRIORS

Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley was handed the play-calling duties in the offseason, taking over full-time the duties that he began to share during the 2007 season. Under Haley, the offense has become one of the most potent and high scoring offenses in the NFL.

The Cardinals will certainly earn their frequent flyer miles as they have five East Coast games during the 2008 season, including the trip this week which will see them on the East Coast for 10 days as they face the Redskins and Jets. Arizona is looking to improve their road record this year just like they did last season with their home record, going from 3-5 in 2006 to 6-2 in 2007. They started well in week one, winning in San Francisco, the first road victory to open the season since 1999.

Haley took over a portion of the play-calling duties during the 2007 season and the Cardinals offense has now scored 20+ points in 10 consecutive games, extending the longest active streak in the NFL. In that span, the Cardinals have scored 30+ points in a game six times. A candidate for the Dolphins head coaching position in the offseason, the Cardinals moved to lock up Haley, signing him to a new three-year contract and giving him the majority of the play-calling responsibility, something Haley relishes. Haley has helped lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 start in 2008, as the offense is averaging 27.0 points per game in the first two weeks. In fact, the 54 points scored by the Cardinals in the first two games combined is the highest total in the first two games of a season for the Cards since the team scored 68 in 1985 (27 and 41). The Cardinals currently possess the NFL’s seventh ranked offense and the fifth ranked passing game. Kurt Warner posted the third perfect passer rating of his career and first since 2000, when he faced the Dolphins last week while Anquan Boldin (140) and Larry Fitzgerald (153) each hit the 100-yard mark, the sixth time the duo has accomplished the feat.

As they head east, the Cards will have to adjust to the time change as three of the team’s trips will include a three hour difference and two just a two hour difference since the state of Arizona does not adjust their clocks during daylight saving time like the rest of the country. The Cardinals will again be one of the handful of NFL teams that will “travel around the world” in 2008. Arizona is among the seven teams that will travel at least 25,000 miles this season, the distance it takes to travel around the globe. Total 2008 NFL Miles Traveled 1. Seattle 34,766 2. Oakland 34,218 3. San Diego 33,403 4. San Francisco 31,530 5. New England 29,024 6. Arizona 26,073 The teams in the NFC West will fly the furthest distance of any division for the second consecutive season. They will fly 114,616 miles this season compared to 113,584 last year.

EDGE REACHES 15,000 CAREER YARDS Edgerrin James entered last week’s game needing just 33 yards to reach 15,000 scrimmage yards for his career, and with 55 th yards rushing against the Dolphins, James now has 15,022 scrimmage yards for his career. He became just the 14 player in NFL history to reach the milestone. The jersey he wore in the game and the ball used on the play he reached 15,000 yards on were sent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in honor of James’ accomplishment. Since entering the league in 1999, James has amassed 11,762 rushing yards and 3,260 receiving yards for his career. James th became the 12 running back to join the list. The only non-running backs on the list are wide receivers Jerry Rice and Tim Brown. James has the second-highest yards from scrimmage average among active rushers, averaging 115.6 yards every time takes the field, behind only LaDainian Tomlinson. James has averaged 90.5 yards rushing and 25.1yards receiving in each of his 130 career starts. STREAKING CARDINALS In defeating the Miami Dolphins 31-10 in last week’s home opener, the Cardinals now hold a 7-3 record in their last 10 games and have won four games in a row for the first time since 1999 when they won games 9-12. It is the fourth four-game winning streak for the Cardinals since the team moved to Arizona. Four-game winning streaks: 1988-2008 2007-current: Games 15-16 in 2007; Games 1-2 in 2008 1999: Games 9-12 1998-99: Games 14-16 in 1998; Game 1 in 1999 1988: Games 3-6 A win this week in Washington would give the Cardinals their first five-game winning streak since 1977 when they won six straight in games 5-10 and it would be the first time since 1974 that the team has started 3-0. Dating back to last season, the Cardinals have a 7-3 record in their last 10 games and have scored 20+ points in all 10 games, the longest current streak in the NFL and the second longest streak in team history. Below are a few stats from the Cardinals last 10 games, dating back to 2007: HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEK Record: 7-3 Home Record: 5-1 9 The team scored 31 points for the sixth time in 10 games Away Record: 2-2 9 Kurt Warner threw for 361 yards, his third 300-yard game in his last four outings 20+ Points in a Game: 10 30+ Points in a Game: 6 9 Anquan Boldin had 140 yards receiving and 3 TDs TDs Scored: 37 9 Larry Fitzgerald had 153 yards receiving Turnover Ratio: +7 100-Yard Rusher: 3 9 The team won its fourth consecutive home game 100-Yard Receiver: 6 300-Yard Passer: 5

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN WEEK 3

After not turning the ball over and posting a +5 turnover ratio in week one at San Francisco, the Cardinals again went without a turnover in yesterday’s win vs. Miami, the first time the team has gone without a turnover in consecutive weeks since 2001 (12/23 vs. Dallas; 12/30 @ Carolina). Since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger, the Cardinals have never opened the season with two consecutive turnover-free games.

x The Cardinals head to Washington this week looking for their first five-game winning streak since 1977 when they won six straight in games 5-10. It would also be the first time since 1974 that the team has started the season 3-0. That year, the Cardinals began the season 7-0.

The Cardinals have won or broke even in the turnover battle in each of the team’s 10 wins under head coach Ken Whisenhunt. The Cardinals finished last season with an 8-8 record and turnovers played a huge part in most of their wins and most of their losses. In each of the Cardinals 10 wins under Whisenhunt, the team has either broke even or won the turnover battle, with the team finishing 7-0 when they win the turnover battle. In contrast, the team is 0-6 when they lose the turnover battle. x Arizona is looking for its first win in Washington since defeating the Redskins 45-42 on 11/22/98. Washington has won the last six meetings between the two teams. x With 20 points in this week’s game the Cardinals will have scored 20+ points in 11 consecutive games dating back to 2007, extending the longest active streak in the NFL and tying the franchise record set in 1983-84. x The last time the Cardinals opened a season 2-0 on the road was 1991. x QB Kurt Warner had three touchdown passes last week, giving him 48 as a member of the Cardinals. He needs three more TD passes to tie Paul Christman (1945-49) for fifth place on the franchise list. x With 300 yards passing this week, Warner would have 13 300-yard games a member of the Cardinals, the third-most in franchise history. x WR Anquan Boldin needs 100 yards receiving to reach 23 100-yard games for his career, which would establish a new franchise record. x Boldin has faced the Redskins twice in his career and has 17 receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns in those games. x CB Ralph Brown will play in his 100 week.

NOTES FROM LAST WEEK

’08 DRAFT CLASS LOOKS LIKE A WINNER

x The Cardinals are one of 10 teams that will enter week 3 at 2-0 (Patriots, Bills, Steelers, Titans, Broncos, Giants, Cowboys, Packers, Panthers)

There are never any guarantees when it comes to choosing players in the NFL draft, especially when teams draft players from smaller and lesser known schools. The Cardinals used three draft picks to select players from schools outside Division I-A, the first time they have done so since the draft went to seven rounds in 1994.

x With 63,445 fans attending last week’s game, it marked rd the 23 consecutive sellout at University of Phoenix Stadium, including the preseason and regular season. x The Cardinals have now won their last three consecutive home openers, all three at University of Phoenix Stadium. x In the Cardinals last three homes games, they have outscored their opponents 109-56 and have averaged 36.3 points-per-game in that stretch. In their last two home games, the Cardinals defeated the St. Louis Rams 48-19 on 12/30/07 and Miami 31-10 last week, for an average margin of victory of 25.5 points. x After holding a 37:05 to 22:55 advantage in time of possession in week one in San Francisco, the Cardinals again won the battle vs. Miami last week, holding the ball 3:48 longer than the Dolphins. The Cardinals own a 17:53 advantage over their opponents in time of possession through the first two games of the season. x The Cardinals outgained the Dolphins 445 to 236 in Sunday’s game, including a 284 to 92 advantage in total yards in the first half. x Dating back to 2007, Larry Fitzgerald has now recovered the last three onside kick attempts by opposing teams. x The Cardinals have won the coin toss in each of its first two games and deferred to the second half in each game. x Dirk Johnson has punted six times on the season with four of those kicks landing inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Regardless of where they came from, the team has been very pleased with the 2008 draft class from top to bottom. “I have been very pleased with how they have performed on the field,” Whisenhunt said in the final week of the preseason. “Overall, this draft class has really been good for us from the standpoint of being able to show up on the field.” Rd. 1 2 3 4 5 7

Through the first two games, four draft picks—CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, DT Calais Campbell, DE Kenny Iwebema, and RB Tim Hightower—have all contributed. Hightower has TDs in each of his first two games, becoming the first Cardinal player to have two rushing TDs in his first two games, Rodgers-Cromartie has received playing time on both offense and defense and has collected two tackles and three passes defensed in substantial playing time as a corner and nickel back. Campbell has four tackles, including three last week, the most among defensive lineman. Iwebema recorded a tackle in the opener and received playing time the the d-line last week vs. Miami.

‘08 CARDS BUILT FOR SUCCESS By nearly all accounts, the 2008 Cardinals roster is the most talented and deepest in recent memory. That didn’t happen overnight but through a well-executed plan to build a quality football team that will be competitive for years to come. Under the direction of General Manager Rod Graves, the Cardinals have assembled that talent in a number of different ways. The most significant has been through the NFL Draft. “That’s really the lifeblood of any successful NFL team,” said Graves. “Our scouts and personnel department have done an outstanding job in identifying the types of players that will not only succeed at the NFL level but also excel in our particular system.” Recent drafts have not only produced Pro Bowlers in Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, Adrian Wilson, and Darnell Dockett but also scores of other full-time starters and contributors. It’s far too early to tell but based on early indications and preseason performances, the 2008 Cardinals draft is poised to produce the next wave of Cardinals stars; six of the seven ’08 draftees are on the opening day roster. Another area that has been instrumental in building the ’08 Cardinals is unrestricted free agency. “The big splash free agents get a lot of attention,” said Graves. “But I’m extremely proud of players that may have generated less fanfare when we signed them but have made significant contributions and filled important roles.” In that category a year ago were players like Mike Gandy, a full-time starter at left tackle, and cornerback Rod Hood, who not only started every game but counted two touchdowns among his career-high five interceptions. Arizona hopes defensive players like Travis LaBoy and Clark Haggans will have similar success this year. According to Graves, University of Phoenix Stadium is also a major factor in the team’s ability to build a championship-caliber team. “There’s no question that the stadium has delivered everything that the team had hoped for,” Graves said. “A year ago we were 6-2 at home and a big part of that success can be attributed to the home field advantage that’s been created by a sold out stadium and a large, passionate fan base. It’s also provided the revenue streams that we were lacking previously and give us the chance to compete aggressively with the other teams in the league.” Arizona’s 8-8 record a year ago is a good indication that the Cardinals plan. The next step is a successful ’08 campaign that extends into 2009.

TWO OF THE BEST TO MEET

JAMES LEADS ACTIVE RUSHERS

Two of the most accomplished running backs of this decade will meet this week as Arizona’s Edgerrin James takes the field opposite Washington’s Clinton Portis.

Edgerrin James is the only active rusher to surpass the 11,000-yard mark. The next closest active rusher, Fred Taylor, trails James by 980 yards. Warrick Dunn, LaDainian Tomlinson and Fred Taylor all joined the 10,000-yard club last season.

James is the NFL’s leading active rusher with 11,762 career rushing yards while Portis ranks eighth on that list with 7,895 career rushing yards. Career Rushing Edgerrin James Clinton Portis

The parallels between the two backs go much deeper than being two of the best rushers in the NFL over the last 10 seasons. Both James and Portis are Florida natives who were standout running backs at the University of Miami, where James finished his college career ranked second all-time on Miami’s career rushing list while Portis finished his career ranked third. James entered the league as the fourth-overall selection of the Indianapolis Colts in 1999 and after rushing for an NFLhigh 1,553 yards in his debut season, was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Portis was a second-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2002 and rushed for 1,508 yards in his first season, earning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Both are Pro Bowl running backs with James going to Hawaii in 1999, 2000, 2004 and 2005 and Portis being selected in 2003.

JAMES AIMS FOR TOP 10 th

Currently 13 on the NFL’s all-time rushing list, Edgerrin James is poised to enter the top 10 in 2008. With 11,762 yards on the ground after rushing for 155 yards in the first two games, James needs 482 yards to pass Marcus Allen, th who currently sits in 10 place. With another 1,000-yard season, James would move as high up as the number eight spot, currently held by the legendary Jim Brown. HIGHTOWER IS TWO-FOR-TWO With his one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter against Miami last week, (combined with his 2-yard TD run in week one at San Francisco) rookie RB Tim Hightower became the first Cardinals player in history with rushing TDs in his first two games. In his first NFL game, and fifth career rushing attempt, Hightower hit pay dirt with a two-yard TD run in the third quarter in San Francisco. In doing so, he became the first Cardinals running back to score a touchdown in his NFL debut since Ottis Anderson rushed for a 76-yard TD against Dallas on 9/2/79. Last week, Hightower rushed 10 times for 24 yards, mostly in short yardage situations, and now has 18 rushes for 37 yards and four receptions for 41 yards on the season, with two rushing touchdowns. Hightower, a product of the University of Richmond, earned his regular season playing time with his standout performance in the preseason, where he ran for 107 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns on 28 carries.

Anquan Boldin had 140 yards on six catches against nd Miami last week. It was his 22 career 100-yard game, tying Jackie Smith for the Cardinals all-time franchise record.

With everything that wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has accomplished in his NFL career, it is hard to believe he is in only his fifth NFL season and just turned 25 at the end of last month. Fitzgerald recorded 330 receptions for 4,544 yards and 34 touchdowns in his first four years. He has been to two Pro Bowls and last season led the NFC in both receptions and yards for a receiver.

Larry Fitzgerald also hit the 100-yard mark in the game th last week, catching six passes for 153 yards, his 14 career 100-yard game, putting him in a tie with Bobby Joe Conrad, Pat Tilley and Sonny Randle 100-Yd Games 22 21 18 17 16 14

153 + 140 = 6 Both Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin went over 100 yards receiving last week, the sixth time the duo has accomplished the feat since they began playing together in 2004. Boldin hauled in six receptions for 140 yards and Fitzgerald also caught six passes, going for 153 yards. It marked the first time they have both eclipsed 100 yards receiving in the same game since 11/26/06 at Minnesota. Date 9/14/08

TRIPLE-TD GAME A FIRST Anquan Boldin’s three touchdown receptions in last week’s 31-10 win over Miami established a career single-game high for the sixth-year receiver and marked the first time a Cardinal receiver caught three touchdown passes since Rob Moore vs. Washington, 12/7/97. Boldin is finding the endzone more and more in the last couple of seasons. In 2007, Boldin caught two touchdown passes in three separate games on his way to setting a new single-season high with nine touchdown receptions. Before last season, Boldin had two touchdown receptions in a game twice in his first four seasons, both coming in his rookie year of 2003.

The Cardinals have had two or more receivers go over 100 yards in the same game 29 times, but none as frequently as Boldin and Fitzgerald. Through the first two games of the 2008 season, Boldin and Fitzgerald have now combined for 23 receptions, 406 receiving yards and four touchdowns. In 2005, Boldin and Fitzgerald had four games in which they both reached 100 yards receiving, a franhcise record for a single year. The same year, the duo combined to become just the second tandem in NFL history to finish a season with 100+ catches and 1,400+ yards, other other being Herman Moore and Brett Perriman in 1995.

WARNER IN SEPTEMBER

Warner’s remarkable eight game stretch of multi-TD games to finish the 2007 season ended in week one in San Francisco but with his three TDs vs. Miami, no NFL QB has thrown more TD passes than Warner since the midway point of 2007. In the final 8 games of 2007 and first 2 of ’08 Warner has thrown 25 TDs, four more than the next closest player (Tony Romo, 21).

The opening month of the NFL season has been a good one for Kurt Warner throughout his career. In 27 career starts in the month of September, Warner has completed 593-of-880 attempts (67.4%) for 7,492 yards, 40 TDs, 27 INTs and a 93.9 QB rating. His 67.4 completion percentage in the month of September is the best in NFL history. His 7,492 yards passing are more than in any other month.

Over the last 10 games, Warner has thrown for 300+ yards five times and is averaging 292.0 yards per game, with his 2,920 passing yards the best since the midway point of 2007. BREAKING DOWN WARNER

LEINART IN YEAR THREE

AT HOME Won the first 15 home games he started. For his career he is 27-13 as a starter at home.

Matt Leinart returns from a 2007 season that saw him land on injured reserve with a broken collarbone he suffered in the fifth game of the year.

ON THE ROAD Won 15 of his first 21 road games as a starter. For his career he is 22-24 as a starter on the road.

After his injury, backup Kurt Warner filled in and had a strong run as the Cardinals quarterback. Warner was named the starter after the final preseason game and a closely contested competition with Leinart, who head coach Ken Whisenhunt says is making significant improvements as he continues to grow in the system.

“He has started 16 games in this league,” Whisenhunt said of his young QB. “That is not a lot of games for a young quarterback. I am very excited about the progress he has made and his future with the organization.” In his rookie season, Leinart showed the promise that th made him the 10 overall selection in 2006. After taking over as the starter in place of Kurt Warner in the sixth week of the season, he threw for 2,547 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. As a rookie starter, Leinart: x Completed 60 percent or more of his passes in five of his last six games. x Became the first rookie in NFL history to throw for over 400 yards in a game. x Became the first Cardinals quarterback since Jake Plummer in 2001 to have three games in a season with a 100+ quarterback rating. x Broke Plummer’s rookie record of 2,203 passing yards, throwing for 2,547 yards on the season.

JOHNSON PINS THEM DEEP

MUCH DEEPER IN 2008

Cardinals punter Dirk Johnson has an impressive line on the stat sheet following his first two games as a Cardinal. Six punts for 257 yards with four punts landing inside the opponent’s 20yard line. Maybe the most important stats that Johnson has posted through the first three games are his identical punting average and net average—42.8 yards. Opponents have yet to return any of Johnson’s punts. Johnson’s best kick of the season came at a crucial time in the game in San Francisco in week one. Up 7-3 heading into the second quarter, Johnson’s 35-yard punt was downed by Clark Haggans at the San Francisco 1-yard line. After a three-n-out by the 49ers, the Cardinals used the short field resulting from the ensuing 49er punt to stage a six-play 58-yard touchdown drive that gave them a 10-7 lead. Johnson’s 45.0 net average in the opener was the second-best in the NFL in week one, trailing only Baltimore’s Sam Koch, who had a 46.0 net average. Johnson, in his seventh NFL season, was signed by the Cardinals on 3/5/08 and was the team’s only punter used throughout the offseason and preseason. The Colorado native has experienced his share of ups-and-downs in his NFL career. He was the punter for the Eagles from 2003-05, including an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIX vs. New England but has also supported held down a variety of jobs in between NFL gigs such as working in a liquor store, as a handyman, mowing football fields, and his own least favorite, a carpet cleaner.

Cardinals vs. Redskins

The Cardinals not only returned with the entire coaching staff intact, but almost all the starters on both sides of the ball from a team that nearly made the playoffs in 2007. A few players, through both free agency and the draft, were added for competition and depth but the offense returns 10 starters while the defense also returns 10. Adding to the foundation the team has established are free agents LB Clark Haggans, DE Travis LaBoy, DT Bryan Robinson and draft picks CB Dominique RodgersCromartie and RB Tim Hightower, who will all push the existing starters for playing time and provide depth. The 2007 starters still on the team are: Offense WR Larry Fitzgerald LT Mike Gandy LG Reggie Wells RG Deuce Lutui RT Levi Brown TE Leonard Pope WR Anquan Boldin QB Kurt Warner RB Edgerrin James FB Terrelle Smith

Defense DE Antonio Smith NT Gabe Watson DT Darnell Dockett DE Bertrand Berry LB Chike Okleafor MLB Gerald Hayes WLB Karlos Dansby CB Rod Hood CB Eric Green SS Adrian Wilson

Center and free safety were the only spots that didn’t have a regular starter returning coming into the season and both spots were taken by players who contributed significantly in 2007, C Lyle Sendlein and FS Antrel Rolle.

CARDINALS-REDSKINS CONNECTIONS

GRIMM GOES BACK TO D.C.

In 1990 Cardinals President Michael Bidwill earned a law degree from Catholic University in Washington D.C.

Cardinals assistant head coach/offensive line Russ Grimm heads back to the place where his days in the NFL started. An All-American out of Pitt, Grimm was selected by the th Redskins in the third round (69 overall) of the 1981 NFL Draft and he went on to spend the next 19 years with the organization as a player and coach.

Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt played tight end and hback for the Washington Redskins from 1989-90. He played in two games for the Redskins in 1990. Redskins offensive quality control Bill Khayat spent 2004-06 serving in the same capacity for the Cardinals. Redskins assistant head coach/running backs Stump Mitchell played for the Cardinals from 1981-1989, ranking as one of the team’s all time great running backs and kick returners. He is the Cardinals’ all-time leader in combined yardage with 11,988 yards and ranks second with 4,649 yards rushing on 986 attempts and 32 touchdowns. After his playing days, Mitchell coached Casa Grande H.S. (AZ) where he led the team to a playoff berth in his second year. Whisenhunt coached special teams/tight ends at Vanderbilt and quarterbacks coach Jeff Rutledge was the quarterbacks coach there with Redskins tight ends coach Rennie Simmons in 1995. Cardinals defensive backs coach Teryl Austin (2003-06) served in the same capacity in Seattle and coached Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs (1997-2003). Austin was joined on the staff by Redskins head coach Jim Zorn (2001-07) who served as quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach/running backs Stump Mitchell (1998-2007) who coached running backs. During that time Cardinals defensive end Chike Okeafor (2003-04), wide receiver Jerheme Urban (2003-05) and safety Oliver Celestin (2006) played for the Seahawks. Redskins Director of Player Development John ‘JJ’ Jefferson (1974-77) graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelors degree in history. Jefferson was an All America selection and registered 175 receptions for 19 touchdowns during four seasons as a Sun Devil. Redskins guard Pete Kendall played for the Arizona Cardinals from 2001-03, starting 36 of the 37 games played.

He had a remarkable career with the Redskins as a member of the famed “Hogs” offensive line starting 11 seasons at guard (1981-91), earning four consecutive Pro Bowl selections (1983-86) and was a first-team selection to the 1980s all-decade team. He also helped lead the team to four Super Bowl appearances and three victories. After his playing days, Grimm began his coaching career as the tight ends coach for Washington, holding that position from 1992-96 before moving to coach the Redskins offensive line for four seasons (1997-2000). As the o-line coach, Grimm is credited with the development of Washington tackles Jon Jansen and five-time Pro Bowler Chris Samuels, who each earned starting spots as rookies on the Redskins’ offensive line. During his playing days in Washington, Grimm was a teammate of Ken Whisenhunt (1989-90) and Cardinals quarterbacks coach Jeff Rutledge (1990-91). As a quarterback, Rutledge engineered the greatest comeback in Redskins history in 1990 when he replaced Stan Humphries in the third quarter with the Redskins trailing Detroit 35-14. Rutledge led the Skins back to a 4138 overtime victory by completing 30 of 42 passes for 363 yards, earning the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award.

Redskins cornerback Justin Tryon played at Arizona State from 2004-07. He earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors in 2007. From 1998-2001, Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner (1998-2001) played with Redskins linebacker London Fletcher (1998-2001) for the St. Louis Rams. During that time Warner won NFL and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player while helping the Rams win their first Super Bowl since 1951. Cardinals running back Edgerrin James (1996-98) was teammates with Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss (1997-2000) at the University of Miami. Cardinals cornerback Antrel Rolle (2001-04) played with Redskins running back Clinton Portis (1999-2001) and linebacker Rocky McIntosh (2001-05) at the University of Miami, helping the Hurricanes win the 2001 National Championship. From 2002-03 Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry was teammates with Portis in Denver. Cardinals running back Tim Hightower played at the University of Richmond in Virginia from 2004-07. Hightower grew up approximately 25 miles south of FedEx Field in Waldorf, Maryland where he earned all-State honors in both his junior and senior years at Episcopal (VA) High School. Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett is from Burtonsville, Maryland which is around 20 miles north of FedEx Field. He was regarded by many as the top defensive end in the nation while at Paint Branch High School. Cardinals tackle Levi Brown was a standout two-way lineman at Grandy High School in his hometown of Norfolk, Virginia, which is roughly 200 miles from FedEx Field. Cardinals guard/tackle Elton Brown grew up 191 miles south of FedEx Field in Hampton, Virginia. Before going on to be an AllAmerican and All-ACC selection at the University of Virginia (200104) Brown earned all-district, all-region and all-Daily Press honors in 2000 as he led Hampton High School to a 10-2 record.

Cardinals vs. Redskins

MATER DEI ‘MATES Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart and Redskins quarterback Colt Brennan prepped together at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA. As a junior, Brennan backed up the then senior Leinart, who completed 192 of 309 passes (62.1%) for 2,870 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while leading Mater Dei to a 9-3 record. The following year Brennan led the team to a 9-5 record completing 68% of his passes with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. Leinart went on to become one of the most decorated QBs in NCAA history at USC and won the Heisman Trophy in 2004. Brennan broke 31 NCAA records at the University of Hawaii and holds the NCAA record with 131 TD passes. He finished third in the Heisman voting following his senior year in 2007.

BUGEL FACES FORMER TEAM AND FORMER PUPIL Washington offensive line coach Joe Bugel served as the head coach of the Cardinals from 1990-93 after coming over from the Oakland Raiders following the 1989 season. th

Now in his 30 NFL season, Bugel developed the Redskins famed “Hogs” offensive line during his last coaching stint with Washington from 1981-89. During that time, Bugel had a significant influence over current Cardinals assistant head coach/offensive line Russ Grimm, who was part of the infamous offensive line that appeared in four Super Bowls between 1982 and 1991.

NEW ROLE SUITS HIM WELL

DEFENSIVE FACTS FROM ‘08

The Cardinals newest free safety is not a recently signed free agent or a 2008 draft pick but converted cornerback Antrel Rolle. The fourth-year pro out of the University of Miami tackles a new position this season after having a breakout season last year as the nickel back in pass coverage.

9 The Cardinals have forced five turnovers on the season (four by the defense; one on special teams) and their +5 turnover ratio is the best in the NFL this season.

Rolle motivated coaches to make the move with his outstanding play as a nickel back last season. Playing as the extra defensive back, Rolle swiped five interceptions, returning an NFL-high three of them for touchdowns with an additional one errantly called back due to a penalty. In returning those interceptions, Rolle amassed an NFL-high 283 return yards, averaging 56.6 yards per return.

9 The Cardinals outgained the Dolphins 445 to 236 in yesterday’s game, including a 284 to 92 advantage in total yards in the first half.

After suffering a left ankle sprain during the first preseason game that kept him out of action for a large part of training camp, Rolle returned to a steep learning curve. He has navigated the curve well in his first two regular season games at his new position. He has finished second on the team in tackles in each game and Rolle has 13 tackles on the season. Last week vs. Miami, Rolle collected a team-high two passes defensed in a secondary that collected six on the day.

9 The 23 points given up in the first two games combined is the lowest total in the first two games of a season since giving up 20 points in 1977 (7 and 13).

9 After posting four sacks in the season opener, the Cardinals had two more sacks and five QB hits last week vs. Miami. 9 Of the defense’s six sacks, four have come from the right defensive end position, manned by Bertrand Berry and Travis LaBoy, who each have two sacks on the season.

BERRY ATTACKING AGAIN After DE/LB Travis LaBoy came to the Cardinals in free agency and won the starting job in training camp, Bertrand Berry has been playing in a reserve role in the first two games of 2008.

Since being drafted in 2005, Rolle has started 29 of the 38 games he has appeared in at corner, nickel back and now safety. He has collected 164 tackles, seven interceptions and 20 passes defensed, three times collecting 11 tackles in a game.

There can’t be too many reserves around the NFL playing like Berry has to start the NFL season. He now has a sack in each of his first two games of the season after taking down Dolphins QB Chad Pennington last week. He will be looking for three in a row this week in Washington, which would be a first for Berry.

DOCKETT ANCHORS D-LINE

A Pro Bowler in his first season with the Cards in 2004, Berry has notched 14.5 sacks in the last three campaigns combined—all cut short due to injury. He missed the final eight contests of 2005 (pectoral), the last six of 2006 (triceps) and the last seven of 2007 (triceps).

Fifth year defensive tackle Darnell Dockett returns in 2008 after becoming the first Cardinals defensive tackle to make the Pro Bowl since Eric Swann in 1996. The 2004 thirdround draft pick, who set career-highs with nine sacks, 75 tackles and two forced fumbles last season, doesn’t appear to be slowed by his trip to Hawaii. In week one in San Francisco, Dockett led all defensive linemen with five tackles and his fierce hit on 49ers FB Zak Keasey forced a fumble, the first of five turnovers forced by the Cardinals in the game. Durability has made Dockett an integral part of the Cardinals defense. He has started 65 of 66 games in his first four-plus seasons in the NFL and he has started every game the last three-plus years, with his 51 consecutive starts ranking as the team’s longest current streak. Previously seen as one of the team’s most promising young players, Dockett fulfilled that promise in 2007. Entering last season, he had collected a total of six sacks in his career and had never accumulated a multi-sack game in his first three seasons. Last season, Dockett collected nine sacks included three multi-sack performances. He led all Cardinals defensive linemen with 75 tackles, 22 more than his previous single season high of 53 His sack total in 2007 led all NFL interior defensive linemen and it also tied Mark Smith (1998) for the second-highest total in franchise history by an interior lineman (David Galloway, 12, 1983).
