Aquatics

Located in the heart of the Schwartz/Reisman Centre and as a centrepiece of the Sharp Family Atrium, the two-storey, glassed-in Randy Mark Stupp Aquatic Centre features the 25-metre Lillian Evelyn Dawson Stupp Pool and the Jacob’s Ladder Therapeutic Pool. The Aquatic Centre plays host to thousands of happy families and children of all ages and abilities for recreational, instructional, and restorative swim programs. The Brown/Lederman Outdoor Saltwater Pool provides lane swimming, gradual entry for young children, and recreational swims for the entire family.

Bronze Medallion

This Lifesaving Society’s three-level program provides enriched training for those who want to develop swim strokes and skills while having fun. Swim Patrol develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on Water Smart® behaviour. Skill drills enhance capability in the water, good physical conditioning, and lifesaving judgment.

Teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries and defense methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 metre timed swim. Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star certification (need not be current).

This course teaches the fundamentals of water safety instructional skills, including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision, and feedback. Candidates are required to complete a series of written and practical teaching assignments under the supervision of a certified Water Safety Instructor.

This is a dual Red Cross and Lifesaving Society Instructor course that builds on the skills learned in the AWSI. The focus is on how to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross swim program and the Lifesaving Society’s lifesaving courses. Stroke correction, drills emergency instructional response and rescue skills will be covered. Prerequisites: 16 years. of age and AWSI plus 12 hours of teaching experience and current Bronze Cross.
