Functional Programming Goal of Functional Programming: To produce a document that determines and validates the need for additional space. Provides a list of spaces, areas, and relationships required to meet a proven need. The program is the basis for conceptual budgets, master planning, feasibility studies and schematic design.

Functional Programming ¾ ¾ ¾
^k=fab^p=_^pba=mo^`qf`b
Functional – “Pertaining to the act or performance of a duty or activity” Program – “Descriptive notice of a series of events” or “ a definite plan of” A Functional Program - a verbal description of desirable current and future activities and operations plus a detailed description of spaces required to support the activities and programs

Functional Programming What Does it Mean? ¾ ¾ ¾
¾
^k=fab^p=_^pba=mo^`qf`b
User Groups: Description of Desirable Activities Operators: Activities in response to User Group needs Authorities: Approval point for commencement of project and dedication of funds. Designers: Provides space requirements, functional adjacencies, and qualitative and quantitative information. Parks and Recreation Ontario
Functional Programming Why is Programming a difficult task? ¾ Program provides a method of communication between designers and clients ¾ Language of designers and clients foreign to each other ¾ ‘Ceiling Tile’ Programming ¾ “Tell us what you want’ Architecture ¾ Specialist experience essential to get the building you need!
^k=fab^p=_^pba=mo^`qf`b
Parks and Recreation Ontario
Functional Programming Why Bother? ¾ ¾
¾
^k=fab^p=_^pba=mo^`qf`b
Programming is time-consuming Design is a visual process – urge to create ‘pictures’ for marketing and fund raising To create a building that functions as envisioned and desired ….and avoid ‘Christmas morning’ design!
Parks and Recreation Ontario
Functional Programming How does a Client/Owner participate? ¾
Operational Modeling ¾ ¾ ¾
¾
‘Wants’ versus ‘Needs’ ¾ ¾
¾
Demand for programs assessed What are activities to be staged? When are they held? Needs – based on current and committed programs Wants – based on anticipated or desired programs
Difference between them is $$$$$

Functional Programming Assessing Utilization Patterns ¾ ¾ ¾
Historical usage data and projected utilization Demographics and enrollment and participation rates Modeling and analysis of time-ofday patterns of use
^k=fab^p=_^pba=mo^`qf`b

Functional Programming Listening and Problem Solving ¾
Stakeholder preferences, habits and patterns
¾
Understanding peak-period demand and ability to shift demand
¾
Managing expectations and achieving balanced solutions

Functional Programming Program as a Business ¾ Quantifying need ¾ Explaining critical functional relationships (including stacking), circulation and control ¾ Modeling and testing scenarios and developing operational strategies ¾ Revenues and operating expenditures

Collaboration Tools and Techniques ¾Individual stakeholder meetings and interviews ‐ ensuring everyone gets heard ¾Focus groups, workshops, charettes ¾Open Houses as opposed to town‐ hall type assemblies ¾Surveys and on‐line surveys
AN IDEAS BASED PRACTICE
Parks and Recreation Ontario
Building Consensus Objective (Big Picture) vs. Subjective (Individual Wants) ¾Understanding functions, roles and staff responsibilities without getting into what that one person wants ¾Getting user groups to understand other groups needs ¾Exploring opportunities for sharing of spaces for efficiency and to avoid duplication
AN IDEAS BASED PRACTICE
Parks and Recreation Ontario
Building Consensus Getting Stakeholder Buy-In ¾Communication should be two‐way – stakeholders entitled to information ¾Telling the story as it unfolds: why choices and compromises are made ¾Quelling misinformation and disinformation ¾Building stewardship and stakeholder ‘ownership’ in the project
AN IDEAS BASED PRACTICE
Parks and Recreation Ontario
Building Consensus Building Trust ¾Not appearing to take sides ¾Explaining all the variables (budget, priorities) ¾Being a good listener ¾Our clients are our partners ¾Guiding the client to the best decisions but not being prescriptive or a ‘know it all’
