A Note from the Director I n June, the Appleton Common Council voted to not authorize the City of Appleton to make an offer to the owners of Fox Banquets & Rivertyme Catering and Trinity Lutheran Church, also known as the “bluff site”. It became clear last year, that talking about sites and concepts had more people paying attention to the mission and needs of the library than prior articles, television news stories, focus groups and meetings had done. Our work has been intentionally inclusive, and we won’t stop being inclusive with this decision. Not everyone agreed with the proposed site, and the reality is, there will not be a site or option presented that will have universal support. However, the foundation for moving forward is that everyone’s opinions need to be treated with respect. If we want people to participate, everyone should feel as valued as those who have come before them. This means the input we receive will be broad and diverse, and while the needs of the library haven’t changed, we need to move forward in a productive a manner. While we take time to gather feedback about the process, our staff continues to connect patrons to important resources. This newsletter is filled with examples. Please take note of the Reach Out and Read update, found on page six. This national evidence-based program is being implemented regionally through a grant from the United Way Fox Cities. At APL, we are honored to serve as the facilitator between local clinics, non-profits and area libraries ensuring that eventually all Fox Cities children will have a Reach Out and Read experience in their well-child visits, and families will be connected to the library whose resources are most convenient to them. Appleton has high expectations and at APL we continue to work to meet the needs of our community in ways that address our longstanding mission through important collaborations like Reach Out and Read and the dozens of other ways you will read about through our newsletters.

A few years ago Meredith was a volunteer with the Young Band Project, a collaborative program between the Lawrence Academy of Music and Appleton Area School District music teachers. The program enhanced music offerings and provided instruction to students at two schools receiving Title 1 funds. The students at these schools might not have otherwise had the opportunity to learn how to play instruments. Meredith was honored as Lawrence University’s Volunteer of the Year several years for her role in the project.

e’re excited to announce Meredith Schoenfeld as our 2015 Gilbert Family Volunteer of the Year. Since 2009, she has volunteered over 1,000 hours - that equates to 125 full work days! Meredith wears a number of hats at the library. Twice a week, she arrives at 7:15 am, no matter what the weather is like, and puts materials reserved by patrons, out into the holds section. She generally stays a while after and shelves other materials and is always willing to volunteer other shifts when needed. Meredith is also a regular volunteer for the Music at the Library series and assists with other children’s and adult programs at the library. She has also delivered books to home bound patrons through the Walking Books program.

“Delightful, kind-hearted and dependable” are just a few of the words that staff and volunteers at APL use to describe Meredith. Meredith’s care for her community shines through her dedicated service.

e have long been known in the region for our high quality local databases maintained by staff and filled with community information. In fact, the usage of our local databases is more than double that of those we subscribe to. To get started using our wonderful local resources, we have a page on our website dedicated just to them: www.apl.org/e/apl. Here you will find a list of our local content, as well as explanations of what you can expect to discover there. Fox Valley Memory is our local history collection. It has both digitized texts and images, as well as links to other local history resources from APL and the Outagamie County Historical Society. It’s a great resource to carry you back in time and explore the history of our community. The Obituary Index is an ongoing project at the library. We have a specific group of volunteers dedicated to indexing obituaries that appear in local papers. The index contains obituaries and death notices specific to Appleton and is invaluable for those doing local genealogy projects. Looking for something more modern? We also offer a Local Services Directory that will help you figure out what city department to contact for a specific issue. Other government agencies and community organizations are also included. Even better, if you want direct assistance, you can always call our Reference Desk at 832-6173 and ask for help. We understand that while online content is great, in-person help from a librarian will never be replaced. We are here to help!

Reach Out and Read

In January, we received a grant from United Way to further a national program known as Reach Out and Read. Keep reading to learn more about this unique iniative. Abbey Unruh Appleton Public Library Physician Liaison Continued Expansion in the Fox Cities Since January, we’ve been busy behind-the-scenes promoting the Reach Out and Read program throughout the Fox Cities. Reach Out and Read is a non-profit organization of medical providers who promote the use children’s books as a means of diagnosing developmental benchmarks, ensuring every family has books in their home by providing them with a book during each visit and connecting families to resources at their local library so that every child enters kindergarten with the pre-literacy skills they need to be ready to read. If you visit one of the clinics that have already implemented Reach Out and Read, you will notice a change outside the examination room. Clinics don’t just treat this program as a book giveaway, they develop a culture that promotes and celebrates literacy by creating literacy-rich environments in their waiting rooms as well. Parents listen and children benefit when physicians talk about the importance of literacy. Physicians using this program develop a rapport with families because the book helps break down an intimidation barrier and children look forward to the book they get on their next visit. New parents benefit from the opportunity to hear this information from someone they trust and respect – their pediatrician. Taking the lead from Affinity Medical GroupChildren’s Health Center and UW-Fox Valley Family Medicine, which have already implemented Reach Out and Read, we have been meeting with other local medical clinics, as well as local libraries to promote the expansion of this program throughout the Fox Cities. We are well on our way to reaching our goal of 100% of medical clinics in the Fox Cities participating in the Reach Out and Read program within three years!

A new literacy-rich environment in the Mosaic Family Health waiting room. Artwork created and donated by Lisa Gavronski. Community Celebration and Book Drive This summer, several Fox Cities’ libraries and medical clinics will be publicly celebrating and promoting Reach Out and Read. Fun activities, as well as a community book drive are planned at many locations with books going into the hands of children at each participating Reach Out and Read clinic. Community Support We have seen tremendous support from local businesses and would like to thank them for helping us promote the Reach Out and Read program in the Fox Cities. Thank you to the following businesses that are either participating in the book drive, making a financial contribution, or donating goods or services: Barnes and Noble, Half-Price Books, Fox West YMCA, Neenah-Menasha YMCA, Appleton YMCA, YMCA Child Learning Center at Thrivent, Building for Kids, Gunderson Cleaners and Goodwill of NCW.
