Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, Inc. A Special Note from the Friends The purpose of the Annual Report is to list and thank all contributors to the Friends Membership Campaign and our three Endowment Funds. It is also an opportunity to recognize memorial contributions, gifts in honor of, and other gifts and donations made to the library throughout the year. The Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library appreciate your support of its mission, activities, programs, and general good works, and welcome your constructive comments. The 2013 Annual Report reflects donations from the 2012-2013 Membership Campaign, which began on November 1, 2012 and ended October 31, 2013. Donations for the current 2013-2014 Membership Campaign will appear in the 2014 Annual Report, which will be published at this time next year. The Book Endowment Fund, Technology Endowment Fund, Seto Memorial Fund, Summer Reading Program, Restoration Concert and Memorial Donations listed were made during the calendar year 2013. The Friends’ financial statement is provided at the Annual Meeting in January and is available upon request. This report is created by volunteers. Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library

Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to provide this 2013 Annual Report of the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, Inc. Your generosity and thoughtful support throughout 2013 helped to strengthen our library’s daily effort to meet the educational, informational, and cultural needs of the South Pasadena community and we are honored to include you in our wide circle of Friends. In 2013, the Friends Membership Campaign totaled 534 with a contribution of $30,175. Our Technology and Book Endowments added an additional 120 donations totaling $11,000 resulting in a total corpus of $85,000 and $280,000 respectively. And, our wonderful seven-day a week, all volunteer Friends Bookstore, our largest single source of revenue, raised more than $46,000. All told, the Friends were able to provide more than $73,000 in direct support to our Library in 2013. Just a few examples of items purchased and supported last year by the Friends for our Library include: Summer Reading Program -- Where 2,650 kids read more than 19,625 books. Tutor.com -- Live online homework assistance to nearly 1,000 students. OverDrive.com -- Enables patrons to download titles directly to their electronic devices. Author & Film Screening Nights – 3,074 patrons enjoyed 25 unique Author, Film & Living History Events. Books! -- Hundreds of new releases, bestsellers, teen collection & books for our Book Discussion Groups. CD/DVDs -- Nearly 100 new CDs & DVDs added to the Library’s growing collection. Library Student Interns -- Funding provided for two library interns. Newspaper Scanning & Archival Supplies -- Represents a 10-year Friends commitment to archiving. Community Events – Funding for co-sponsored events such as Eclectic Music Festival, Moon Festival, Van Dyke Parks Concert, and the South Pasadena Quasi-Centennial Celebration. Please invite your friends and neighbors to shop at our Bookstore! The Friends Bookstore has many great bargains and fresh new stock is regularly put on the shelves, so check it out next time you’re in the Library. If you are searching for more bookshelf space at home, we welcome your donation of used books to the Friends. You’ll get a nice tax deduction too. Be sure to visit our website at www.friendsofsopaslibrary.org. You can view announcements for upcoming events, such as our special Bookstore Sales, Silent Auction items, Restoration Concerts, Author Nights, and Children’s programs sponsored by the Friends. Endowment Funds Each of our three Endowment Funds is designed to perpetually support the needs of the Friends of the Library through a designated investment fund. These funds are invested to earn income each year, and as the value of the endowment grows, so does the income it generates. In 2013, these three funds provided more than $10,000 in direct support for technology, books of enduring value, and children’s titles.
